We examined the genetic variation of 12 isozyme loci in 14 populations of Matthiola (Brassicaceae) representing the geographic distribution of the species M. incana, M. fruticulosa ssp. fruticulosa and M. tricuspidata in the Sicilian insular system and the adjacent mainland areas to estimate the levels and apportionment of genetic variation in the insular populations and to understand their population dynamics. The disparity in the distribution of polymorphism in populations of M. incana ssp. incana (low within populations but with high values of FST and GST) contrasts with the homogeneity in the inter-population distribution of the high genetic variation detected in M. tricuspidata and M. fruticulosa ssp. fruticulosa. While the low polymorphism found in M. incana ssp. incana is consistent with its origin through cultivation and the associated lack of gene flow, the Sicilian populations of the other two taxa probably derived from multiple founder events from nearby continental areas and, according to our estimates, have maintained high interpopulational gene flow. Unlike M. incana, the Sicilian populations of M. tricuspidata and M. fruticulosa ssp. fruticulosa could have survived the glaciations in refugia. This higher antiquity, together with the maintenance of abundant gene flow, largely explains their high values of genetic variation. In contrast, M. incana ssp. pulchella and M. incana ssp. rupestris have low indices of polymorphism and they are probably neo-endemics, as their distribution areas were severely affected by the Plio-Pleistocene glaciations.  相似文献

Megaspore ornamentation is one of the few morphological characters used in the taxonomy of the genus Isoëtes. In the present work, we test the application of this character for distinguishing some Isoëtes species occurring in the Mediterranean: Isoëtes sicula, which according to some authors should be included as a variety in I. histrix, and the recently described I. todaroana, whose affinity with other taxa is currently unknown. Two additional species (I. duriei, I. velata) were also included in the analysis. The megaspores were studied using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and chemical treatment. In all species, the megaspore surface is covered by a siliceous coating; removal of this coating reveals an underlying three-dimensional network of fused rodlets. A unique pattern of this network occurs in I. sicula, supporting its separation from I. histrix. Comparison between the patterns observed in the examined Mediterranean species shows that I. todaroana is most similar to I. histrix.  相似文献

Abstract

Phytoplankton distribution in a brackish area of North-Eastern Sicily -The abundance and taxonomic composition of the phytoplankton have been studied in relation to temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen in the brackish pools of Oliveri-Tindari, a very restricted area on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily (Italy). The phytoplankton distribution in these pools has been subject to relatively few investigations. Although this area is not influenced by sewage and industrial effluents, some pools showed episodical high densities of phytoplankton, due to the influence of organic inputs (streams and water-bearings), and anoxic conditions.

The microalgal communities were generally characterized by chlorophyceans, although sometimes other taxa prevailed.  相似文献

Abstract

Five populations belonging to three subspecies of Dianthus rupicola Biv. (D. rupicola subsp. rupicola, D. rupicola subsp. aeolicus, and D. rupicola subsp. lopadusanus) and growing in different geographical areas of Sicily were tested for seed germination at various temperatures. All populations showed high germination rates with an optimum temperature between 15°C and 25°C. Efficient seed germination might contribute significantly to the preservation of these subspecies which are currently exposed to several environmental threats.  相似文献

We examined specimens of the macrostigma trout Salmo macrostigma, which refers to big black spots on the flanks, to assess whether it is an example of taxonomic inflation within the brown trout Salmo trutta complex. Using new specimens, publicly available data and a mitogenomic protocol to amplify the control and cytochrome b regions of the mitochondrial genome from degraded museum samples, including one syntype specimen, the present study shows that the macrostigma trout is not a valid species. Our results suggest the occurrence of a distinct evolutionary lineage of S. trutta in North Africa and Sicily. The name of the North African lineage is proposed for this lineage, which was found to be sister to the Atlantic lineage of brown trout, S. trutta.  相似文献

Aim This paper uses null model analysis to explore the pattern of species co‐occurrence of terrestrial vertebrate fauna in fire‐prone, mixed evergreen oak woodlands. Location The Erico–Quercion ilicis of the Mediterranean belt (50–800 m a.s.l.) in the Madonie mountain range, a regional park in northern Sicily (37°50′ N, 14°05′ E), Italy. Methods The stratified sampling of vertebrates in a secondary succession of recent burned areas (BA, 1–2 years old), intermediate burned areas (INT, 4–10 years old) and ancient burned areas (CNB, > 50 years old), plus forest fragments left within burned areas (FF, 1–2 years old) permitted the comparison of patterns of species co‐occurrence using a set of separate presence/absence matrices. First, the breeding avifauna derived from standardized point counts was analysed using Stone & Roberts’C‐score, and by a null model algorithm (fixed/equiprobable). Secondly, the analysis was repeated using all vertebrate species recorded in the succession. Results Sixty‐five species were recorded in the 2‐year study period in the four sample treatments. Birds were found to make up the largest component (63%) of the recorded assemblage. The BA treatment had the lowest species richness, followed in order by the small, medium and large FFs, and then by the CNBs. For both analyses (birds and total vertebrates), the C‐scores were quite small and not significantly different from those that could be expected by chance in the BA and INT burned areas; this indicates a random co‐occurrence among vertebrates of those assemblages. Contrariwise, for both analyses in the CNBs, the C‐scores were large and significantly different from the simulated indices, thereby indicating a non‐random co‐occurrence pattern (segregation) of vertebrates in the undisturbed woodlands. In addition, C‐score values for the surviving FFs show a significant aggregation of species. Main conclusions The null model analyses highlighted a new aspect of fire disturbance in Mediterranean woodland ecosystems: the disruption in patterns of co‐occurrence in the terrestrial vertebrate community. Wildfire alters community organization, inducing, for at least 10 years, a random aggregate of species. Communities re‐assemble themselves, showing the occurrence of species segregation at least 50 years after fire.  相似文献

During the 2012 and 2013 growing seasons, a disease was detected on potted laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) plants in two nurseries located in the Catania province (eastern Sicily, Italy). ‘Cylindrocarpon’‐like species were consistently recovered from crown rot and stem rot tissues. Based on morphological characteristics, DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of β‐tubulin (TUB), histone H3 (HIS3) and translation elongation factor‐1α (TEF‐1 α) gene sequences, the fungi associated with symptomatic tissues were identified as ‘Cylindrocarponpauciseptatum, Ilyonectria novozelandica and I. torresensis. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by pathogenicity tests carried out on potted V. tinus cuttings. To our knowledge, this is the first report worldwide of ‘C.’ pauciseptatum, Inovozelandica and Itorresensis causing disease on V. tinus.  相似文献

Summary Mesozoic and Paleogene clastic carbonates in deep-water successions outcropping in the Sicani mountains (central southern Sicily) represent debris-flow and turbidite deposits accumulated in slope/base-of-slope sectors of the Sicanian Basin, a Permian to Miocene deep-water sedimentary domain of Sicily. Reef-derived carbonates of late Triassic age are frequently found among the clastic elements of these deposits, in association with other shallow and deep-water Mesozoic carbonates. The provide us with new data on the stratigraphic setting of a platform paleomargin now buried beneath the Sicilian thrust and fold belt. This paleomargin bounded the wide middle and upper Triassic carbonate platform which is now known in the subsurface of the Southern Sicilian thrust and fold belt. This paleomargin bounded the wide middle and upper Triassic carbonate platform which is now known in the subsurface of the Southern Sicilian mainland and offshore in the Pelagian Platform, from the Malta escarpment to the Sciacca and Trapani areas through the Hyblean Plateau. The hinge zones between this platform domain and the Sicanian basin were particularly affected by the paleostresses related to the Mesozoic and Paleogene evolution of the Southwestern Tethys. The sedimentary successions of these areas recorded repeated episodes of progradation, aggradation, backstepping, uplift and erosion of the platform-basin system, under eustatic and tectonic forcing.  相似文献

Summary Sedimentological, paleontological and sequence analyses of Cenomanian limestones in Sicily reveal the facies architecture and dynamics of a Mid Cretaceous rudistdominated platform margin from Western Tethys. The studied deposits outcrop near Palermo, as part of a large structural unit of the Sicilian Maghrebids. They belong to the Panormide carbonate platform, a Mesocenozoic paleogeographic domain of the African margin. The lateral continuity of the beds along three nearly parallel E-W outcrop sections allowed the recording of cm/dm thick lithological and faunal variations. Nine main lithofacies associations have been recognised along about 200 m of subvertical strata. Their vertical and lateral organisation points to a transition from highenergy shelf-margin rudist patches and shoals to more internal lagoonal-tidal environments over a short distance. The lithofacies evolution and stacking pattern along the three sections made it possible to define elementary cycles, composite cycles and larger-scale sequences with a dominant shallowing-upward trend. Their hierarchical organisation implies that sea-level fluctuations were an important factor in their formation. The cycles are characterised by a great variation in facies as a result of transgressive-regressive events in different sectors of the inferred Cenomanian shelf. Subtidal cycles typical of the shelf margin (4–10 m-thick) are particularly well identifiable. They are made of large Caprinidae and Sauvagesiac rudstone-to-floatstone (about 2/3 of the total thickness), capped by rudist-conglomerates, often organised into 3–5 fining-upward amalgamated beds and showing, in places, effects of surface-related diagenesis. In more internal shelf areas the cycles consist of Caprinidae-Radiolitidae floastone grading up into amalgamated beds of angular bioclastic rudstone/grainstone. Alternations of foraminifer/ostracod mudstone/wackestone and bioclastic grainstone/fine-rudstone, capped by loferites and/or by other emersion-related overprintings, characterise the cycles formed in the peritidal zones. these cycles are stacked into three incomplete depositional sequences. The sequence boundaries have been identified by the abrupt interposition of peritidal cycles in subtidal rudist-rich cycles, with evidence of brief subaerial exposure.  相似文献
