The direct comparison between microcharcoal and pollen data from the Holocene sediment core of Lago di Pergusa (central Sicily, Italy) led us to investigate the linkages between fire, vegetation, and climate in the Mediterranean Basin. The role of human populations in shaping the environment of the last millennia was closely examined as well. Pollen and charcoal were extracted using a standard pollen methodology and both identified from the same pollen slides. At Lago di Pergusa the importance of fire in maintaining and favouring a Mediterranean vegetation, a basic concept in ecology, seems to be inconsistent, as important fires took place in the open environments with xeric vegetation at the beginning of the Holocene well before the expansion of evergreen vegetation. On the contrary some big fires seem to have happened in the period (around 8000 years BP) in which the greatest wetness, the thickest forest canopy, and the most important expansion of submontane vegetation of the record are found. A probable explanation of this phenomenon can be found in the precipitation regime, in the increased available biomass and in the resulting increase in combustible material, indicating also that the highest humidity achieved in central Sicily during the Holocene was not strong enough to prevent fires. During this period drops in arboreal pollen concentration match in minima in the charcoal curves. Fires were practically absent during the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods and not responsible for the general trend towards aridification identified in the pollen record, at times in which prehistoric populations are generally believed to have caused forest clearance by burning. Important and frequent burnings are documented for the Bronze and Iron Ages and probably not all of them were fires of living trees, but burning of wood for producing metals, cooking or heating. The occurrence of a fire around 3700 years BP temporarily caused a minor decrease of arboreal pollen concentration. In the open landscapes of the two last millennia an almost continuous sign of regional burnings is recognized, confirming the historical evidence of an intense land use in central Sicily at least since Roman times. 相似文献

The vulnerability to drought and freeze stress was measured in young plants of Quercus ilex L. growing in the field in two natural sites within the Italian distribution area of this species, i.e. Sicily (Southern Mediterranean Basin) and Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy), respectively. In particular, the resistance strategies adopted by Q. ilex to withstand the two stresses were estimated in terms of seasonal and/or diurnal changes in leaf conductance to water vapour (gL), water potential (L) and relative water content (RWC) as well as of xylem embolism in the stem and root hydraulic conductance (KRL). Sicilian (SI) plants showed to reduce water loss by stomatal closure (gL decreased) in summer, thus maintaining average RWCs at 88–90%. Moreover, SI plants showed considerable resistance to xylem cavitation in the stem (the loss of hydraulic conductance, PLC, was less than 12% throughout the year) and to maintain the hydraulic conductance of their roots (KRL), constantly high even in summer. Plants growing in Venezia Giulia (VG plants), on the contrary, underwent leaf dehydration in the winter due to freeze stress so that RWC measured in April was still 78% on a diurnal basis. This was apparently due to consistent xylem embolism in the stem. In fact, PLC was as high as 40% between November and March. Only in the summer was PLC similar to that recorded in SI plants. Moreover, KRL of VG plants decreased in November from about 1.5 to 0.8×10–4 kg s–1 m–2 MPa–1, i.e. about 50%, and in February KRL dropped further to 0.4×10–4 kg s–1 m–2 MPa–1. On the basis of the above, we conclude that: (a) Q. ilex was more sensitive to freeze than to drought stress so that freeze stress can be considered as a factor limiting the distribution area of this species; (b) drought and freeze stress were faced by Q. ilex adopting two different resistance strategies, i.e. drought avoidance based on water saving in Sicily and freeze tolerance in Venezia Giulia. 相似文献

The glacial–interglacial cycles have caused severe range modifications of species' distributions. In Europe, thermophilic species had to retreat into geographically distinct southern refugia during glaciations. This process produced strong genetic imprints, which are still detectable by the present pattern of genetic differentiation and the distribution of regional diversity. To reveal the biogeographical imprints in the western Mediterranean, we analysed 26 populations of the butterfly Maniola jurtina spread over large areas of its European and North African distribution range. The samples were analysed using allozyme electrophoresis. We detected three genetic groups, divided into Western Europe, Central/Eastern Europe, and Italy with the Maghreb. The North African samples randomly cluster within the Italian samples. Even the population sampled in Morocco is genetically closely related to these samples and not to the geographically neighbouring Iberian ones. Parameters of genetic diversity showed similar values over the whole study area. The observed genetic pattern reflects possible glacial refugia in Europe located in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans. For North Africa and Italy, our data reveal a colonization of Africa originating from Italy. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 693–703. 相似文献

Fifty-six samples of wild fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) have been collected in different localities of Sicily and analysed for their content in seed essential oils. The GC-FID-MS analyses allowed identifying 78 compounds, representing more than 98% of the oils. Phenylpropanoids are the most highly represented components – 55 samples show estragole as the main compound ranging between 34 and 89%, while (E)-anethole is the other phenylpropanoid ranging between 0.1 and 36%, although it only reaches appreciable values in a few samples, largely being present below 1%. The oxygenated monoterpene, fenchone, a typical fennel oil component, has been found in all samples, in the 2–27% range; α-pinene (1–21%), limonene (1–17%) and γ-terpinene (<1–4%) were the monoterpene hydrocarbons found in all samples. Only one sample showed piperitenone oxide and limonene as main components, with 42 and 34%, respectively, and with the lack of any phenylpropanoid. Sesquiterpenes and others compounds class had only negligible values or were not detected in all samples. Statistical analyses allowed to single out five groups, reflecting the compositional differences of the essential oil profiles of the wild Sicilian fennel. 相似文献

Thirty samples of wild thyme collected from as many Sicilian locations have been analysed for their qualitative and quantitative essential oil profiles. The oils, obtained by hydrodistillation, have been analysed by a combination of GC-FID-MS; in all, 46 components, representing more than 98% of the oils, were fully characterized. Monoterpenes, both hydrocarbons and oxygenated, were the most highly represented components: the former with a range of 8–61% and the latter with a range of 31–86%. Carvacrol was the main compound in 29 samples, ranging between 49 and 83%, suggesting that Thymus capitatus Hoff. et Link. [syn. Coridothymus capitatus (L.) Rchb.f., Satureja capitata L., Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav.] is the most widespread wild species in the Sicilian area. Only one sample, identified as Thymus longicaulis C. Presl., collected from the North-East of Sicily showed a different composition, p-cymene and thymol being the main compounds with 40 and 16%, respectively. Statistical analyses allowed establishing a single broad group, confirming the substantial compositional uniformity of the essential oil profiles of the wild Sicilian thyme. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A new species of the genus Polysiphonia from the Mediterranean Sea is described. It is an ecorticate species, with 4 pericentral cells, showing prostrate axes from which erect axes arise. Rhizoids are formed by pericentral cells in a median position remaining in open connection with them. Erect axes are straight, simple throughout or pseudodichotomous at the base then simple or with one (rarely two-three) orders of branching; trichoblasts and scar cells not observed. Only tetrasporangial plants were found. They show ellipsoid tetrasporangia borne in short straight series, often interrupted by sterile segments. The new species is also characterized by a peculiar habit consisting of prostrate axes, adhering to lower faces of Peyssonnelia spp. by means of rhizoids growing upward, from which erect upright axes perforating thalli of the supporting species arise. A comparison with the related species of Polysiphonia was also carried out. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The genetic diversity of isolated populations of Cytisus villosus has been studied by means of enzyme polymorphism analysis. Two types of isolated populations were studied: “terrestrial islands” in Sicily, and “true islands” in the Aeolian archipelago. In the populations of “true islands” the number of alleles and the heterozygosity are lower than in “terrestrial islands”. Isolation amongst Sicilian populations seems to be more recent than isolation of the Aeolian populations, and may be attributed to climatic changes which occurred during the Holocene and/or to human activities. The disjunction of the Aeolian populations seems much more recent than the origin of the isles themselves; the colonization of the archipelago is attributed to a single, recent dispersal event not followed by local evolution. In view of the biological structure of the Aeolian populations, C. villosus must be regarded as a locally endangered species. 相似文献

Scrapie is a fatal degenerative disease of the central nervous system of sheep and goats. Adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (c-AMP) plays a key role in many biological processes, membrane permeability, lipogenesis, metabolism, neuronal activity, muscular contraction, cellular differentiation, hormonal and enzymatic activities, proteins synthesis, etc. and in inflammation, immune processes, cellular growth regulation and carcinogenesis. In this work the c-AMP plasmatic levels in Scrapie infected sheep and goats were studied. The study was carried out on 31 sheep of Comisana breed and 35 autochthonous goats belonging to two farms from Sicily. The evaluation of c-AMP levels in blood samples, taken from the jugular vein, was carried out by radioimmunoassay (RIANEN” c-AMP 125 - Dupont NEN Diagnostic). The results obtained show significantly higher c-AMP levels in animals with Scrapie (40.88 ± 2.08 pmol/L in sheeps; 43.54 ± 1.62 pmol/L in goats) than healthy animals used as controls (26.45 ± 0.76 pmol/L in sheeps; 28.17 ± 1.58 pmol/L in goats). The increase in c-AMP plasmatic levels could be correlated to alterations of central nervous system functioning and variations of neurotransmitters (NA, Ach, GABA, etc.) responsible for behavioural and neurological changes in Scrapie infected sheep and goats. 相似文献

Ostracod association from the Upper Triassic (Tropites dilleri zone of the Carnian stage) of the sedimentary succession (Mufara Formation) exposed along the east side of Monte Scalpello (Catenanuova, central eastern Sicily) has been studied for the first time. The specimens, silicified, are rare but well preserved and often consist of complete carapaces. They belong to eight families: Healdiidae, Cavellinidae, Bairdiidae, Acratiidae, Bythocyprididae, Pontocyprididae, Judahellidae, Glorianellidae. Twenty-three taxa have been listed; the family Bairdiidae is the most represented among all the others with fifteen species. Four species are new: Bairdia scaliae n. sp., Acratia maugerii n. sp., “Anchistrocheles” gemmellaroi n. sp. and Judahella? montanarii n. sp. Other species are left in open nomenclature because of the lack of specimens. 相似文献
