(±)-Abscisic acid (ABA) at 10-5 M was added to the transpiration stream of leaves of 16 species (C3 and C4, monocotyledons and dicotyledons). Stomatal responses followed one of three patterns: i) stomata that were wide and insensitive to CO2 initially, closed partially and became sensitive to CO2; ii) for stomata that were sensitive to CO2 before the application of ABA, the range of highest sensitivity to CO2 shifted from high to low intercellular partial pressures of CO2, for instance in leaves of Zea mays from 170–350 to 70–140 bar; iii) when stomata responded strongly to ABA, their conductance was reduced to a small fraction of the initial conductance, and sensitivity to CO2 was lost. The photosynthetic apparatus was affected by applications of ABA to various degrees, from no response at all (in agreement with several previous reports on the absence of effects of ABA on photosynthesis) through a temporary decrease of its activity to a lasting reduction. Saturation curves of photosynthesis with respect to the partial pressure of CO2 in the intercellular spaces indicated that application of ABA could produce three phenomena: i) a reduction of the initial slope of the saturation curve (which indicates a diminished carboxylation efficiency); ii) a reduction of the level of the CO2-saturated rate of assimilation (which indicates a reduction of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration capacity); and iii) an increase of the CO2 compensation point. Photosynthesis of isolated mesophyll cells was not affected by ABA treatments. Responses of the stomatal and photosynthetic apparatus were usually synchronous and often proportional to each other, with the result that the partial pressure of CO2 in the intercellular spaces frequently remained constant in spite of large changes in conductance and assimilation rate. Guard cells and the photosynthetic apparatus were able to recover from effects of ABA applications while the ABA supply continued. Recovery was usually partial, in the case of the photosynthetic apparatus occasionally complete. Abscisic acid did not cause stomatal closure or decreases in the rate of photosynthesis when it was applied during a phase of stomatal opening and induction of photosynthesis that followed a transition from darkness to light.Abbreviations and symbols A rate of CO2 assimilation - ABA (±)-abscisic acid - c a partial pressure of CO2 in the ambient air or in the gas supplied to the leaf chambers - c i partial pressure of CO2 in the intercellular spaces of a leaf - e a partial pressure of H2O in the air - g conductance for water vapor - J quantum flux - T 1 leaf temperature  相似文献

In green leaves and a number of algae, photosynthetically derived carbon is ultimately converted into two carbohydrate end-products, sucrose and starch. Drainage of carbon from the Calvin cycle proceeds via triose phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate and glycollate. Gluconeogenesis in photosynthetic cells is controlled by light, inorganic phosphate and phosphorylated sugars. Light stimulates the production of dihydroxyacetone phosphate, the initial substrate for sucrose and starch synthesis, and inhibits the degradative pathways in the chloroplast. Phosphate inactivates reactions of synthesis and activates reactions of degradation. Among the phosphorylated sugars a special role is allocated to fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, which is present in the cytoplasm at very low concentrations and inhibits sucrose synthesis directly by inactivating pyrophosphatedependent phosphofructokinase. The synthesis of sucrose plays a central role in the partitioning of photosynthetic carbon. The cytoplasmic enzymes, fructose bisphosphate phosphatase and sucrose phosphate synthase are likely key points of regulation. The regulation is carried out by several effector metabolites. Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is likely to be the main coordinator of the rate of sucrose synthesis, hence of photosynthetic carbon partitioning between sucrose and starch.Paper presented at the FESP meeting (Strasbourg, 1984)  相似文献

Leaf photosynthesis rate of the C4 species Paspalum plicatulum Michx was virtually CO2-saturated at normal atmospheric CO2 concentration but transpiration decreased as CO2 was increased above normal concentrations thereby increasing transpiration efficiency. To test whether this leaf response led growth to be CO2-sensitive when water supply was restricted, plants were grown in sealed pots of soil as miniature swards. Water was supplied either daily to maintain a constant water table, or at three growth restricting levels on a 5-day drying cycle. Plants were either in a cabinet with normal air (340 mol (CO2) mol-1 (air)) or with 250 mol mol-1 enrichment. Harvesting was by several cycles of defoliation. With abundant water supply high CO2 concentration did not cause increased growth, but it did not cause an increase in growth over a wide range of growth-limiting water supplies either. Only when water supply was less than 30–50% of the amount used by the stand with a water-table was there evidence that dry weight growth was enhanced by high CO2. In addition, with successive regrowth, the enhancing effect under a regime of minimal water allocations, became attenuated. Examination of leaf gas exchange, growth and water use data showed that in the long term stomatal conductance responses were of little significance in matching plant water use to low water allocation; regulation of leaf area was the mechanism through which consumption matched supply. Since high CO2 effects operate principally via stomatal conductance in C4 species, we postulate that for this species higher CO2 concentrations expected globally in future will not have much effect on long term growth.  相似文献

Summary The early appearance of catecholaminergic neurons, as revealed by fluorescence histochemistry, has been determined in the central nervous system of quail, pheasant, and pigeon embryos. The first neuronal assemblies displaying specific fluorescence are the locus coeruleus and the nucleus subcoeruleus ventralis. Taking into account the differences in the length of the prehatching period of these three avian species, the first catecholamine-containing neurons appear earlier in the precocial quail and pheasant than in the altricial pigeon.Investigation supported by grants from the Italian National Research Council (CNR) No 83.02058.04 (R.G.) and No 83.00492.04 (G.C.P.).  相似文献

The influence of a number of environmental parameters on the fermentation of glucose, and on the energetics of growth of Clostridium butyricum in chemostat culture, have been studied. With cultures that were continuously sparged with nitrogen gas, glucose was fermented primarily to acetate and butyrate with a fixed stoichiometry. Thus, irrespective of the growth rate, input glucose concentration specific nutrient limitation and, within limits, the culture pH value, the acetate/butyrate molar ratio in the culture extracellular fluids was uniformly 0.74±0.07. Thus, the efficiency with which ATP was generated from glucose catabolism also was constant at 3.27±0.02 mol ATP/mol glucose fermented. However, the rate of glucose fermentation at a fixed growth rate, and hence the rate of ATP generation, varied markedly under some conditions leading to changes in the Y glucose and Y ATP values. In general, glucose-sufficient cultures expressed lower yield values than a correponding glucose-limited culture, and this was particularly marked with a potassium-limited culture. However, with a glucose-limited culture increasing the input glucose concentration above 40g glucose·l-1 also led to a significant decrease in the yield values that could be partially reversed by increasing the sparging rate of the nitrogen gas. Finally glucose-limited cultures immediately expressed an increased rate of glucose fermentation when relieved of their growth limitation. Since the rate of cell synthesis did not increase instantaneously, again the yield values with respect to glucose consumed and ATP generated transiently decreased. Two conditions were found to effect a change in the fermentation pattern with a lowering of the acetate/butyrate molar ratio. First, a significant decrease in this ratio was observed when a glucose-limited culture was not sparged with nitrogen gas; and second, a substantial (and progressive) decrease was observed to follow addition of increasing amounts of mannitol to a glucose-limited culture. In both cases, however, there was no apparent change in the Y ATP value. These results are discussed with respect to two imponder-ables, namely the mechanism(s) by which C. butyricum might partially or totally dissociate catabolism from anabolism, and how it might dispose of the excess reductant [as NAD(P)H] that attends both the formation of acetate from glucose and the fermentation of mannitol. With regards to the latter, evidence is presented that supports the conclusion that the ferredoxin-mediated oxidation of NAD(P)H, generating H2, is neither coupled to, nor driven by, an energy-yielding reaction.  相似文献

Abstract The quantitative approach used here is based on a model comprising a well-stirred medium, an unstirred layer, and a CO2 absorbing leaf. The unstirred layer is divided up by planes into a number of sub-layers. Within each plane the concentration of each solute is everywhere the same as is the electric potential. These variables constitute the basic data. Thus the planes were characterized by their pH value. An equation is derived which enables the calculation of the basic data of a plane from the known data of another plane. In this way it is possible to calculate the basic data for all planes. From these data the rate of assimilation, the thickness of the unstirred layer and its sub-layers, the fluxes across the sub-layers and the conversions among the carbon components can be estimated. The CO2 flux decreases, and the HCO?3 flux increases towards the leaf. There are negative fluxes of OH& and CO2–3. H+ fluxes are of minor importance and can be ignored if the pH of the medium is higher than 8.0, provided no non-inorganic C buffers with appropriate pKa are present. The significance of the carbon diffusion facilitating effect of an inorganic carbon system is expressed in various ways. The values obtained represent maxima, as the assumption is made that the equilibrium reactions are very fast. It is argued that even better effects are possible if the back-diffusion of CO2–3 could be prevented by lowering the pH of the unstirred layer.  相似文献

Three qualities of sound—the directional, the temporal and the spectral—are important for intraspecific communication in Orthoptera. The neural mechanisms employed by identified interneurones for encoding these sound qualities are illustrated by examples of physiological processes found at different levels of the CNS. Discussed are: (1) the creation of directional information by local interneurones in the thorax, and the use of time-intensity trading in sound location; (2) mechanisms for encoding the temporal parameters of sound by interneurones ascending to the brain; (3) frequency-dependent neural filtering of auditory information by local interneurones.  相似文献

Summary We have traced the central projections of the receptor neurons associated with each of the eleven largest taste hairs on the labellum of the blowfly, Phormia regina (Meigen), by staining them with cobaltous lysine. The eleven hairs fall into three groups which reflect their peripheral locations and their branching patterns in the subesophageal ganglion. Group 1, consisting of the anterior hairs (numbers 1 and 2) and Group 3, consisting of the posterior hairs (numbers 9–11) project bilaterally, while Group 2, consisting of the middle hairs (numbers 3–8) projects primarily ipsilaterally. The central projections of the hairs within a single group are similar. Each hair houses four chemoreceptors, which have differing chemical sensitivities and behavioral roles, and one mechanoreceptor. In some cases, there were indications that the different cells within a single hair have different central branching patterns. For some hairs, however, it was clear that a single central branching region and pattern was shared by more than one receptor cell. We failed to find either a continuous somatotopic representation of a hair's position on the periphery, or an anatomical segregation of receptors coding for different modalities. Behavioral experiments indicate that the fly is informed both of the identity of the hair stimulated and of the chemical nature of the stimulus. Our results suggest that this information is not represented on a gross anatomical level.  相似文献
