When white light irradiation inhibits shoot growth in derooted pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) cuttings, it decreases tissue tension, a driving force for shoot growth, by making the cell wall of the inner tissues mechanically rigid. To elucidate the mechanism by which light affects the mechanical properties of the cell wall in the inner tissues, its effect on the chemical properties of the cell walls was studied by analyzing qualitatively and quantitatively cell wall polysaccharides in the epdidermis and inner tissue of pea epicotyls grown in both dark and light. The amount of polysaccharides per subhook in the cell walls of both tissues increased during a 4-h dark incubation. Light suppressed the increase in hemicellulosic (HC)-II and cellulosic polysaccharides in the inner tissues, while it did not affect the increase in other wall fractions in either the epidermal or subepidermal tissues. No light effect was observed on the neutral sugar compositions of pectin, HC-I or HC-II fractions in either of the tissues. Light increased the mass-average molecular mass of xyloglucan and rhamnoarabinogalactan in HC-II fractions in the inner tissues, while such an effect was not observed in the epidermis. These facts suggest that the light-induced decrease in the tissue tension in pea epicotyls is caused by an increase in the molecular size of xyloglucan, rhamnoarabinogalactan in the HC-II fraction and/or the suppression of the synthesis of HC-II and cellulosic polysaccharides in the inner tissues. 相似文献

Neutral processes and species sorting in benthic microalgal community assembly: effects of tidal resuspension 下载免费PDF全文
Benthic microalgae (BMA) provide vital food resources for heterotrophs and stabilize sediments with their extracellular secretions. A central goal in ecology is to understand how processes such as species interactions and dispersal, contribute to observed patterns of species abundance and distribution. Our objectives were to assess the effects of sediment resuspension on microalgal community structure. We tested whether taxa‐abundance distributions could be predicted using neutral community models (NCMs) and also specific hypotheses about passive migration: (i) As migration decreases in sediment patches, BMA α‐diversity will decrease, and (ii) As migration decreases, BMA community dissimilarity (β‐diversity) will increase. Co‐occurrence indices (checkerboard score and variance ratio) were also computed to test for deterministic factors, such as competition and niche differentiation, in shaping communities. Two intertidal sites (mudflat and sand bar) differing in resuspension regime were sampled throughout the tidal cycle. Fluorometry and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis were utilized to investigate diatom community structure. Observed taxa‐abundances fit those predicted from NCMs reasonably well (R2 of 0.68–0.93), although comparisons of observed local communities to artificial randomly assembled communities rejected the null hypothesis that diatom communities were assembled solely by stochastic processes. No co‐occurrence tests indicated a significant role for competitive exclusion or niche partitioning in microalgal community assembly. In general, predictions about relationships between migration and species diversity were supported for local community dynamics. BMA at low tide (lowest migration) exhibited reduced α‐diversity as compared to periods of immersion at both mudflat and sand bar sites. β‐diversity was higher during low tide emersion on the mudflat, but did not differ temporally at the sand bar site. In between‐site metacommunity comparisons, low‐ and high‐resuspension sites exhibited distinct community compositions while the low‐energy mudflats contained higher microalgal biomass and greater α‐diversity. To our knowledge this is the first study to test the relevance of neutral processes in structuring marine microalgal communities. Our results demonstrate a prominent role for stochastic factors in structuring local BMA community assembly, although unidentified nonrandom processes also appear to play some role. High passive migration, in particular, appears to help maintain species diversity and structure communities in both sand and muddy habitats. 相似文献

The Northeast Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) has been extending its summer feeding distribution north and west, including around Iceland, since around 2006. The objective of this study is to quantify the weight gain and total food consumption of mackerel and to evaluate the food competition between mackerel and herring (Clupea harengus) feeding in the marine ecosystem around Iceland during the summers 2009–2011. Mackerel feeding in Icelandic waters gained around 43% on average in weight during these summers. Based on swept-area abundance estimates of mackerel from an international survey in 2011 and available estimates of food conversion efficiency in mackerel, the weight gain in Icelandic waters in 2011 corresponded to a total consumption of around 3.4 (2.4?4.5) million tonnes. Overall, 98% of 2314 mackerel, 91% of 398 Icelandic summer-spawning herring and 96% of 424 Norwegian spring-spawning herring stomachs, collected over the summers 2009?2011, contained food. The mean weight of the stomach content of mackerel was higher than for herring in all the years. While the stomach content weight of mackerel was generally highest in southeastern and southwestern areas, it was highest for herring in western, eastern and northern areas. Analysis of stomach contents showed that Copepoda were the most important food of mackerel in most areas, while Copepoda and Euphausiacea were the most important food items for herring. Response to osmotic stress can be used for biotechnological production of this compound. Summary In most eukaryotic organisms that have cell walls, cell separation or cytokinesis is a degradative enzymatic process. In the fission yeastSchizosaccharomyces pombe, it is a post-M-phase event that includes the degradation of part of the cell wall and the primary septum. Ten qualitative traits were observed in two isolated human populations in Bosnia for prewar and postwar periods. Due to recent
war in Bosnia and Herzegovina two million citizens was forced to migrate. Dramatic migration effects occurred in the investigated
populations. Population characteristics found were geographic isolation, high levels of marital distance “zero”, patrilocality
and propagation isolation. Relative recessive allele frequencies of ten qualitative traits were calculated. Average heterozigosity,
genetic differentiation, total heterozigosity, within populations heterozigosity, genetic distance and relative measures based
on results of genetic distance analysis were observed. The total number of observed individuals was 1875. We have observed
1209 individuals in prewar period (Bijela population 731 and Memici population 478) and 666 individuals in the postwar period
(Bijela population 248 and Memici population 478). Results ofFst andGst analysis showed changed degree of genetic differentiation across observed loci. Significant changes in differentiation were
recorded for crooked little finger and PTC tasting. Modest changes of gene differentiation were recorded for ear lobe type
and thumb proximal extensibility. Genetic distance analisis between Bijela and Memici has lower value after then before the
war, but genetic distance between Bijela-prewar and Bijela-postwar has higher value, as well as Memici-prewar and Memici-postwar
genetic distance. Genetic distance between Bijela-prewar and Memiciprewar, as well as Bijela-postwar and Memici-postwar showed
similarity. Constructed dendrogram based on results of genetic distance analyses indicated two clusters groups (1. Bijela-prewar,
Memici-prewar; 2. Bijela-postwar, Memici-postwar). Changed genetic differentiation and results of genetic distance analyses

An insertion in the promoter of the Arabidopsis thaliana QUA1 gene (qua1-1 allele) leads to a dwarf plant phenotype and a reduction in cell adhesion, particularly between epidermal cells in seedlings
and young leaves. This coincides with a reduction in the level of homogalacturonan epitopes and the amount of GalA in isolated
cell walls (Bouton et al., Plant Cell 14: 2577 2002). The present study was undertaken in order to investigate further the link between QUA1 and cell wall biosynthesis. We have used rapidly elongating inflorescence stems to compare cell wall biosynthesis in wild
type and qua1-1 mutant tissue. Relative to the wild type, homogalacturonan α-1-4-D-galacturonosyltransferase activity was consistently reduced in qua1-1 stems (by about 23% in microsomal and 33% in detergent-solubilized membrane preparations). Activities of β-1-4-D-xylan synthase, β-1-4-D-galactan synthase and β-glucan synthase II activities were also measured in microsomal membranes. Of these, only β-1-4-D-xylan synthase was affected, and was reduced by about 40% in qua1-1 stems relative to wild type. The mutant phenotype was apparent in inflorescence stems, and was investigated in detail using
microscopy and cell wall composition analyses. Using in situ PCR techniques, QUA1 mRNA was localized to discrete cells of the vascular tissue and subepidermal layers. In mutant stems, the organization of
these tissues was disrupted and there was a modest reduction in homogalacturonan (JIM5) epitopes. This study demonstrates
a specific role for QUA1 in the development of vascular tissue in rapidly elongating inflorescence stems and supports a role
of QUA1 in pectin and hemicellulose cell wall synthesis through affects on α-1,4-D-galacturonosyltransferase and β-1,4-D-xylan synthase activities. 相似文献
