A model for population regulation with density- and frequency-dependent selection

The life-cycle of a species with separate generations is divided into a reproduction phase and a growing-up phase. In the reproduction phase we assume random mating and selection due to genotype differences in fecundity of the parents and viability of the offspring. During the growing-up phase we assume a (deterministic) death process in continuous time with death rates for the genotypes which increase linearly with the genotype population sizes.In the absence of genotype differences the model gives logistic population regulation. With genotype differences the model generalizes the usual separate generations selection patterns. In addition to these we exhibit cases with three polymorphic equilibria or with a stable cycle.     

The amino acid sequence of the peptide moiety of the pseudomurein from Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum

The amino acid sequence of the peptide subunits of the peptide moiety of the sacculus polymer (pseudomurein) of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was elucidated by analysing overlapping peptides obtained from partial acid hydrolysates of isolated sacculi. It is suggested that the peptide subunits are attached to glycan strands via one of their glutamyl residues. Another glutamyl residue may crosslink two adjacent peptide subunits to form a dimer. The calculated molar ratios of the amino acids and the percentages of the N-or C-terminal amino acid residues of the supposed dimers are compatible with those actually found in the sacculus polymer.     

Characterization of the cytoplasmic fibrils of Treponema refringens (Nichols)

The cytoplasmic fibrils of Treponema refringens were studied in situ by electron microscopy of thin sectioned and negatively stained cells. From 5 to 21 parallel fibrils ran through the cell in a band adjacent to the inner side of the cytoplasmic membrane, on the inner sides of the curves of the spirochete. The nuclear areas of cells were adjacent to the fibrils. Cross sections of fibrils isolated from cells which had been lysed were polygonal and not uniformly electron dense. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of partially purified fibril preparations indicated their main component to be a protein with a molecular weight of 97,000. Fibrils were solubilized by 1% trypsin, 1% pronase, 6 M urea, 1 N HCl, 0.005 N NaOH or 1.3% sodium dodecyl sulfate. Parameter identification of the calvin photosynthesis cycle

Summary This article is concerned with the determination of kinetic parameters of the Calvin photosynthesis cycle which is described by seventeen nonlinear ordinary differential equations. It is shown that the task requires dynamic data for several sets of initial conditions. The numerical technique is based upon an algorithm for non-linear optimization and Gear's numerical integration scheme for stiff systems of differential equations. The sensitivity of the parameters to noise in the data is tested with a method adapted from Rosenbrook and Storey. A preliminary set of parameters has been obtained from a preliminary set of experimental data. The numerical methods are then tested with synthetic data derived from these parameters. The mathematical model and the results obtained in the simulation are used as an aid in designing new experiments.     

Effect of temperature on isotonic twitch of white muscle and predicted maximum swimming speeds of skipjack tuna,Katsuwonus pelamis

Synopsis Latent period, rise time, contraction time, and half relaxation time from isotonic contractions of isolated white muscle samples from skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, were determined at 20°, 27°, and 34° C. These parameters were found to be inversely proportional to temperature (Q₁₀ = 1.47, 1.67, 1.62, and 1.72, respectively). The data show that contraction time and the effect of temperature on contraction time of skipjack tuna white muscle are not unique when compared to other equal-sized teleosts. Based on contraction time, maximum swimming speeds at each muscle temperature were calculated and found not significantly to exceed the maximum speeds of other equal-sized teleosts, when comparisons are made at the same white muscle temperatures     

The genusPicris (Asteraceae,Lactuceae) in Tropical Africa

Three species of the genusPicris L. are native in Tropical Africa:P. abyssinica Sch. Bip. (Ethiopia),P. xylopoda Lack, spec. nova (Nigeria, Ethiopia) andP. humilis DC. (Senegal, Mali). There are indications that the two perennial species,P. abyssinica andP. xylopoda, are related to and have evolved from a primitive Central Asiatic stock in a manner parallel to many African species ofCrepis L.P. humilis, on the other hand, is a small annual plant with a high number of derived characters. The introduced species of European origin growing south of the Sahara are briefly mentioned.     

Induction of multiple embryos with NaHCO3 or calcium free sea water in the horseshoe crab

Summary When horseshoe crab embryos were treated with NaHCO₃ at the developmental stage when the germ disc appears, multiple embryos were formed. NaHCO₃ may effect the formation of multiple embryos by binding Ca²⁺ ions of the embryo since multiple embryos were also formed by treatment with Ca²⁺ free sea water.The treatment caused the blastoderm layer to tear. When the embryos were returned to normal sea water after the treatment, the blastoderm recovered. Some cell masses, probably derived from the germ disc or its prospective cells, formed during the process of the recovery.
