Three co-existing pollination mechanisms are found inUrginea maritima: insect-, wind-, and self-pollination. The flowers exhibit a typical insect-pollination syndrome; they offer abundant exposed nectar as well as pollen. Out of the many different visitors only a few could be regarded as pollinators:Apis mellifera, Polistes gallicus, andVespa orientalis. Late Epigravettian postcranial human remains from the Arene Candide cave (Finale Ligure, Savona, Italy) were compared with
the Neolithic sample found in the upper levels of the same site. Data on length, diaphyseal circumference and diameter of
clavicle, humerus, radius, femur and tibia were collected from male specimens having all these bones. The Epigravettian sample
is characterized by significantly greater tibial length, robustness and platycnemia, significantly lower circumferences in
the upper limb bones and the clavicle, and a high degree of asymmetry. Variations observed in lower limb bones are those expected
on the basis of the different functional requirements of a hunting and gathering economy compared to a more sedentary, food
producing economy. Differences in the upper limb bones and the clavicle are less explicable. However, considering that in
spite of a more slender structure, the Epigravettian bones show evidence of vigorous use, variation in upper limb could result

The effect of phosphate feeding on the influence of low (2%) oxygen on photosynthetic carbon assimilation has been investigated in leaf discs of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) at 12°C. The following observations were made. First, after the transition from 20% O2 to 2% O2, the rate of CO2 uptake was inhibited at CO2 concentrations between about 250 and about 800 l CO2·l-1. Second, phosphate feeding stimulated the rate of CO2 uptake in 20% O2 at higher concentrations of CO2 (500–900 l·l-1). Third, phosphate feeding stimulated the rate of CO2 uptake in 2% O2 at all but the highest (900 l·l-1) and lowest 74 (l·l-1) concentrations of CO2 employed. Phosphate thereby restored the stimulation of photosynthesis by 2% O2 and it did so over a wide range of lower temperatures. Fourth, oscillatory behaviour, however generated, was dampened by phosphate feeding, even at very low concentrations of CO2. Contents of leaf metabolites were measured during the transition to 2% O2 in control and phosphate-fed leaf discs. During this period the ratio glycerate-3-phosphate/triose phosphate rose steeply, but fell again only in the phosphate-treated leaf discs. These data, taken together with measured ATP/ADP ratios, showed that assimilatory power, the ratio [ATP]·[NAD(P)H]/[ADP]·[Pi]·[NAD(P)], decreased when leaves were exposed to 2% O2, but that this decrease was minimised by previous feeding of phosphate. Long bone growth is analyzed for 180 children from a Medieval population at Kulubnarti in Sudanese Nubia (550–1450 A.D.). A regional interpopulation comparison is made with growth data from Wadi Halfa in Lower Nubia, and an intrapopulation analysis is undertaken to assess diachronic changes in growth at Kulubnarti. Changes in growth patterns are interpreted in the context of mortality and morbidity profiles and relationships between the three variables are discussed. It is suggested that changes in the sociopolitical environment may have been responsible in part for altering levels of biological stress and impacting growth. 相似文献

Summary The membrane of mechanically prepared vesicles ofChara corallina has been investigated by patch-clamp techniques. This membrane consists of tonoplast as demonstrated by the measurement of ATP-driven currents directed into the vesicles as well as by the ATP-dependent accumulation of neutral red. Addition of 1mm ATP to the bath medium induced a membrane current of about 3.2 mA·m–2 creating a voltage across the tonoplast of about –7 mV (cytoplasmic side negative). On excised tonoplast patches, currents through single K+-selective channels have been investigated under various ionic conditions. The open-channel currents saturate at large voltage displacements from the equilibrium voltage for K+ with limiting currents of about +15 and –30 pA, respectively, as measured in symmetric 250mm KCl solutions. The channel is virtually impermeable to Na+ and Cl–. However, addition of Na+ decreases the K+ currents. TheI–V relationships of the open channel as measured at various K+ concentrations with or without Na+ added are described by a 6-state model, the 12 parameters of which are determined to fit the experimental data. 相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 26 different species of the generaPiper, Peperomia andPothomorphe (Piperaceae) are reported. The basic chromosome numbers are 2n = 26, x = 13 (Piper, Pothomorphe) and 2n = 22, x = 11 (Peperomia), polyploid series are characteristic forPiper andPeperomia. Piper has the smallest chromosomes and prochromosomal interphase nuclei,Peperomia the largest ones and mostly reticulate to euchromatic nuclei.Pothomorphe is intermediate in both characters. The karyomorphological differences betweenPothomorphe andPiper underline their generic separation. Interspecific size variation of chromosomes occurs inPiper andPeperomia. Multivariate statistical analysis has been applied to time series measurements of aerosol elemental composition from PIXE
analysis of filter samples, and principal components have been resolved that represent distinct particle types in an external
mixture in the atmosphere. In this study, it is argued that a combination of chemical and statistical analyses of the data
may be more powerful in determining chemical species in atmospheric aerosols than studies that employ mainly direct chemical
analysis of chemical species in unresolved mixtures of aerosol particle samples. Sulfur is generally associated with mineral
dust elements. It is reasoned that the association may represent sulfuric acid coatings on particles that can lead to mineral
dissolution and solubilization of significant amounts of aluminum, iron, and other metals.
Upon wet or dry deposition to the surface, the fluxes of these metals in biologically-available form may be sufficient to
affect primary productivity in the world ocean and cause ecological damage in lakes. As a consequence, the fluxes of biogenic
trace gases to the atmosphere may be changed, possibly leading to changes in the tropospheric concentration of ozone. The
inputs to lakes of soluble aluminum, which is toxic to fish, may be partly by deposition directly from the atmosphere, thus
not limited to leaching of soils by acid deposition. Human inhalation of soluble aluminum and other solulilized mineral metals
may account, in part, for the observed geographic pattern of deaths attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
that show high rates in cities of the Western US and the southeast region, but low in most of the midwest and northeast. 相似文献
