Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are of great importance in plant metabolism. However, uncontrolled activation of ROS might have deleterious effects in cells. Eleven Mediterranean countries are still under threat of an introduced taxon of Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea. In the present study, it has been aimed to compare the antioxidant status of this highly invasive alga with some Mediterranean macrophytes collected in the same habitat. For this purpose, such antioxidant enzyme activities as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) as well, levels have been determined in C. racemosa, Cystoseira barbata C. Agardh, Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy and Enteromorpha sp. The highest SOD, CAT, GSH-Px enzyme activities and the lowest LPO level have been measured in the invasive C. racemosa. In conclusion, C. racemosa var. cylindracea seems more tolerant in warring with ROS than the Mediterranean species tested do. These results could partly explain the amazing success of C. racemosa var. cylindracea introduced in the Mediterranean.  相似文献

Morphological and photosynthetic performance were analyzed in species of the genus Caulerpa from an exposed coral reef and a sheltered reef lagoon. Morphological characters, such as distance between modules, number of modules, stolon branches and rhizoid clusters per centimeter of stolon, indicated a uniformity among species within a specific habitat. "Guerilla," or diffusive, growth forms were characteristic for lagoon species and "phalanx," or compact, growth forms for reef species. Differences in photosynthesis were found between Caulerpa species. Sun-tolerant species were found on the reef, and both sun- and shade-tolerant species were present in the lagoon. In the lagoon, shade-tolerant species, such as C. lanuginosa J. Agardh, were found growing in the understory, and sun-tolerant species, such as C. paspaloides (Bory) Greville, formed the canopy. C. cupressoides (West in Vahl) C. Agardh was the only species found in both environments; it showed higher photosynthetic rates and a compressed morphology when growing on the reef and lower photosynthetic rates and expanded morphology for lagoonal ramets. These results suggest that C. cupressoides possesses a broad phenotypic ability to acclimate to lagoonal and reef settings in comparison to other Caulerpa species, enhancing its ecological success in this particular system.  相似文献

We conducted a survey of 63 public aquariums in Japan by means of a questionnaire asking if a green seaweed, Caulerpa taxifolia, was cultured or exhibited in aquariums under the network of the public aquarium association of Japan in 1997. Of 51 aquariums, 16 cultured or exhibited C. taxifolia. Most of the public aquariums possessing C. taxifolia purchased them from aquarium shops or received them from another public aquarium as a donation. Notojima aquarium reported temporal establishment of C. taxifolia in the Sea of Japan between the summer and autumn of 1992 and 1993. C. taxifolia was released into the sea from a 1 m3 cage that was submerged in an open pool. Two colonies with diameters less than 2 m were found near the mouth of a water outflow pipe in both years. Molecular analysis of the ITS rDNA gene of the aquarium strain of Notojima clarified that the seaweed is the same as the aquarium-Mediterranean and Californian invasive strain. Unsuccessful establishment of the invasive strain of C. taxifolia in the Sea of Japan is probably due to water temperatures in winter that are lethal for C. taxifolia. C. taxifolia remains present in many public and private aquariums. If C. taxifoliawere to be released in more temperate waters of Japan, there would be a high risk of establishment and, thus, impact on the marine ecosystem. This suggests that the trade, culture and exhibition of C. taxifolia should be strongly avoided to reduce the chances of accidental release of this harmful species.  相似文献

The rhizoid section of the green alga Caulerpa prolifera (Cp) is active in attaching the developing plant to the substratum. A model system for the study of the adhesion of Cp rhizoids has been developed and identification of two putative adhesive polypeptides of Caulerpa (Vn-Cp) was revealed by immunodetection. A method for fast induction of new rhizoids was established using blade-base cutting followed by a few days of incubation. The new rhizoids were gently enclosed between two cover glasses and incubated until firm attachment developed. While analyzing protein extracts, two ∼60–70 kDa polypeptides (Vn-Cp I and Vn-Cp II) were identified by immunodetection with monoclonal antibodies to human vitronectin (Vn). The relative concentration values of the Vn-Cp proteins increased significantly in the ‘cell-wall’ fraction of the attached rhizoids during the incubation period. However, Vn-Cp proteins were not detected in non-attached rhizoids. Furthermore, the Vn-Cp proteins were also detectable on glass substratum subsequent to attached rhizoid removal. The induction and accumulation of Vn-Cp proteins on the ‘cell-wall’ of Caulerpa rhizoids and the firm attachment of the rhizoids to the glass substratum during the incubation period suggest that Vn-Cp proteins play a significant role in adhesion, which may be similar to the function of vitronectin in other adhesion systems. Furthermore, the high accumulation of Vn-Cp proteins on the glass substratum during attachment of new rhizoids suggests that the Vn-Cp proteins are secreted to the extracellular matrix and directly connect rhizoids to the glass substratum as an intermediate compound. These unique properties of Cp make it an excellent model system for the establishment of high amounts of adhesive material for future research. The distribution of radioactivity into storage and intermediary metabolites during photosynthesis over periods of up to three hours was followed in the siphonous green alga Caulerpa simpliciuscula C. Ag. After the first hour, almost all the carbon assimilated was recovered as insoluble 1,4-α-glucan. There was rapid movement of carbon into insoluble 1,3-β-glucans during the first 20 min of photosynthesis, but little additional carbon moved into these compounds after that time. This contrasted with the movement of carbon into the soluble 1,3-β-glucan fraction, which continued for 2 h. Sucrose accumulated very little 14C during the entire period of photosynthesis. There was a very slow transfer of 14C into lipid throughout the period but the rate was linear. Protein labelling showed a lag of 2 h before it reached the same rate of 14C accumulation as shown by the lipid initially. It is suggested that the distribution of radioactivity can be explained in part by proposing that the tissue is in the latter stages of recovery from the wounding which look place at the time of dividing the thallus into sections.  相似文献

Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh (Ulvophyceae, Caulerpales) is an alga of tropical origin that was accidentally introduced into the Mediterranean sea in 1984, where this species can reach an abundance that has never been described in tropical endemic regions. It is known that caulerpacean algae can develop an efficient strategy against grazers consisting of the synthesis of repulsive of toxic secondary metabolites: we report here the first study of the toxicity of purified secondary metabolites and raw extracts fromC. taxifolia from the Mediterranean.Toxicity was evaluated on three models: mice (lethality), mammalian cells in culture (cytotoxicity) and sea urchin eggs (disturbance of cell proliferation). Aqueous extracts are only active on fibroblasts and mice. In the three toxicity models a seasonal variation of toxicity is observed for the crude methanol extract as well as a decrease of this activity whenC. taxifolia from the Mediterranean is kept in aquaria. Pure compounds exhibit different toxicity depending on the assay. 10,11-epoxycaulerpenyne is the most active substance on mice and fibroblasts whereas taxifolial A and D are inactive or only weakly toxic. Among the four tested compounds caulerpenyne, the major metabolite ofC. taxifolia, is the most active on sea urchin eggs. Caulerpenyne may therefore represent an ecological risk for microorganisms and the eggs of multicellular animals living close to this alga. The ecological impact of this toxicity on marine organisms and the interaction of this alga with the herbivorous fauna are discussed.  相似文献

Chemical investigations of two new species of Udotea, reinvestigation of Tydemania expeditionis and Chlorodesmis fastigiata from Guam and Saipan, Marianas Islands, as well as studies of Caulerpa brownii from Southern Australia, have led to the isolation of four new related diterpenoids and several previously described metabolites. These metabolites possess antimicrobial activities and inhibit cell division in the fertilized sea urchin egg bioassay.  相似文献

为了揭示南海长茎葡萄蕨藻Caulerpa lentillifera共附生真菌的群落结构,并分析自来水清洗对真菌群落多样性的影响,本研究以收集于深圳南海各月份长茎葡萄蕨藻为材料,利用Illumina MiSeq 2500测序平台进行真菌ITS1扩增子测序,分析自来水清洗前后真菌类群组成和多样性的差异。研究发现,从所有18个样品中总共获得914个OTUs,检测出真菌3门12纲32目50科74属106种,其中优势属为曲霉属Aspergillus、单胞瓶霉属Phialemonium、枝孢属Cladosporium、链座菌属Catenulostroma和茎点霉属Phoma;不同月份真菌Alpha多样性指数显示南海长茎葡萄蕨藻共附生真菌丰度和多样性均随着温度降低而降低;自来水清洗前后南海长茎葡萄蕨藻共附生真菌的多样性及群落结构存在一定差异,清洗后真菌OTUs和Alpha多样性指数均有所降低,其中Chao1和Ace指数为显著性下降,表明自来水清洗对真菌群落组成丰度及多样性影响显著,这对长茎葡萄蕨藻的食品安全具有积极意义。  相似文献

The accidental introduction of Caulerpa taxifolia into the Mediterranean is no longer under dispute. What has eluded researchers until now, is definitive evidence for the original, biogeographical source population. Here we present two independent lines of evidence that support an Australian origin for the Mediterranean populations of C. taxifolia. First, we reanalysed algal rDNA-internal transcribed spacer (rDNA-ITS) sequences, combining previously published sequences from different studies with 22 new sequences. The ITS sequence comparison showed that the Australian sample is the sister group of the Mediterranean-aquarium clade. Second, cloned bacterial 16S rDNA gene sequences were analysed from the associated microflora of C. taxifolia collected from Australia, Tahiti, the Philippines and the Mediterranean. Five bacterial lineages were identified, of which three were dominant. Alpha Proteobacteria were the most abundant and were found in all samples. In contrast, members of the beta Proteobacterial line and Cytophaga-Flexibacter-Bacteroides line (CFB) were mainly associated with Mediterranean and Australian samples. Frequency distributions of the five bacterial lineages were significantly different among biogeographical locations. Phylogenetic analyses of the 54 bacterial sequences derived from the four C. taxifolia individuals resulted in a well-resolved tree with high bootstrap support. The topologies of the beta Proteobacteria and CFB mirror the geographical sources of their algal hosts. Bacterial-algal associations provide an identification tool that may have wide application for the detection of marine invasions.  相似文献
