The incorporation of 15NH4+ as a function of time and concentration was used to estimate ammonium uptake by Caulerpa cupressoides (West) C. Agardh, taken from its habitat on the sediments of Tague Bay lagoon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. 15N-based uptake rates followed Michaelis-Menten type saturation kinetics; the maximum uptake rate was 8.7 ± 3.0 μmol N/g dry wt·h at 26° C and the half-saturation constant was 48 ± 10 μM (X?± SE). The high half-saturatiaon constant reflects the dependence of Caulerpa on sediment pore waters as a nitrogen source. Calculations of uptake from isotope time course data were compared to estimates made from ammonium depletion. More ammonium disappeared than could be accounted for by the incorporation of 15N in Caulerpa, and isotope dilution of the ammonium pool is shown not to be responsible for underestimates of uptake, primarily because large 15N additions (40–300 μM) were used. It is suggested that either (1) a secondary ammonium sink such as wall sorption or bacterial uptake significantly influenced ammonium concentrations, or (2) 15N was lost as labelled dissolved organic nitrogen or volatilized during 15N sample preparation.  相似文献

Using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) and fluorescence microscopy, the respective relationships between the arrangement of the gamete cell‐fusion site and the inheritance pattern of chloroplast DNA (cp‐DNA) were studied for Caulerpa brachypus Harvey, C. okamurae Weber‐van Bosse, C. racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh var. laete‐virens (Montagne) Weber‐van Bosse, and C. serrulata (Forsskål) J. Agardh var. serrulata f. lata (Weber‐van Bosse) Tseng. The eyespot of the biflagellate gamete was visualized using FE‐SEM. The female gamete, but not the male, has one eyespot on the cell body posterior. In most mating pairs, the female gamete is fused at the anterior left side of the eyespot and the male gamete at a cell surface that is perpendicular to the plane of the flagellar beat when both gametes are mixed. Then, the inheritance pattern of cp‐DNA was observed using fluorescence microscopy after staining with 4′6‐diamidino‐2‐phenylindole. Male and female gametes have one cell nucleus and one chloroplast each. Chloroplasts of the female gamete usually contain 1–11 spherical or rod‐shaped nucleoids. In contrast, nucleoids are not usually detected in the male gamete’s chloroplast. After mixing male and female gametes, the male gamete without nucleoids and female gametes with nucleoids are always associated at the lateral side and become planozygotes. Such a correlation between the arrangement of the cell fusion site and the inheritance pattern of cp‐DNA was found in another member of Caulerpales, Bryopsis maxima Okamura. These results suggest the possibility that the arrangement of the cell fusion site in the gamete is not determined randomly regardless of sex, but is rather correlated with specific mating types. The relation of these results to those for Chlamydomonas is discussed.  相似文献

Two reciprocal experiments testing for the effects of nutrient addition in the sediment and competitive interactions between the native seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson and the introduced alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh were performed. This study was conducted for 13 months (August 1995 until September 1996) in a bay on the south coast of Elba Island (Italy). Each experiment consisted of the manipulation of the level of nutrients (addition vs. control) and the manipulation of the neighbours (presence vs. removal). Response variables were blade density and size for one experiment and shoot density and leaf length of seagrass in the other. Results indicated that the presence of Caulerpa taxifolia did not affect significantly Cymodocea nodosa shoot density and the increased nutrient availability in the sediment did not alter this pattern. Neither the removal of the canopy of the seagrass nor the fertilization of the sediment has influenced significantly the density of the alga. Both species, where co-occurring, show larger size than where the neighbour is removed. Hence, results of this study suggest that the two species on the long term are likely to coexist and that the high nutrient supply of the sediment would not enhance the probability of success neither of the seagrass nor of the alga. Predictions made on the basis of short-term results, that high nutrient loads of the substratum would have represented an even more suitable condition for C. taxifolia to colonize C. nodosa beds and that on the long-term the alga has a high probability of success, did not occur.  相似文献

On the basis of morphological and genetic studies (rDNA ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2, and a 18S rDNA intron), we confirm here that Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea (Sonder) Verlaque, Huisman et Boudouresque, a southwestern Australian taxon recently introduced into the Mediterranean Sea also occurs in the Canary Islands. This is the first report of C. racemosa var. cylindracea in the Atlantic. It was observed for the first time in the Canary Archipelago in 1997–1998. The speed and regional scale of expansion (north Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea) of this invasive species appear to be among the most dramatic ever recorded. The possible outcome of this introduction in the Atlantic is discussed.  相似文献

Since the introduction of the invasive tropical alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean Sea. a new, uniformly green habitat has been available to local fish assemblages. Underwater visual censuses of three species, Symphodus ocellatus, Symphodus roissali and Coris julis , revealed a higher proportion of green morphs in the C. taxifolia meadows compared to those inhabiting their usual indigenous habitats. In a fourth species, Symphodus rostratus , the distribution of the different colour morphs did not differ between the two habitats investigated. Experiments in aquaria proved that S. ocellatus and S. roissali were homochromic species able to adapt their colouration to the environment. In contrast, no colour change was observed in S. rostratus during the experiments.  相似文献

Comparisons of chloroplast DNA restriction fragments in four species of Caulerpa revealed that patterns between the species were different, with few and possibly no homologous bands. Two forms of Caulerpa sertularioides also revealed different patterns, and it is possible that the forms are separate species. The chloroplast genome in Caulerpa sertularioides f sertularioides (S. G. Gmelin) Howe is 131.4 kb in size and lacks large repeat units. The discovery of another green-algal chloroplast genome that lacks an inverted repeat indicates that this feature is either not ancestral to the Chlorophyceae or has been lost several times. Several gene clusters commonly found in chloroplast DNAs were found to occur in Caulerpa chloroplast DNA, for example, psbD/C, atpF/H, and psaA/B. The 16S and 23s rRNA, which are typically adjacent, contained in an inverted repeat, and cotranscribed, are over 40 kb apart. Genes rps12 and tufA, members of the str operon in eubacteria, are over 50 kb in distance from each other in Caulerpa. The gene order in Caulerpa is unlike any other chloroplast genome characterized to date.  相似文献

Morphological and molecular evidence is provided to further document the status of the enigmatic taxon known as Caulerpa floridana W.R. Taylor from White Shoal, Dry Tortugas, Florida. DNA sequencing of three historical herbarium specimens (WRT329, WRT345 and WRT349) housed at the University of Michigan Herbarium (MICH) demonstrated the molecular separation of this species based on the reconstruction of 931 nucleotides of the chloroplast gene tufA. Caulerpa floridana is sister to the western Atlantic endemic C. ashmeadii Harvey and an unknown Caulerpa taxon from the Florida Middle Grounds. Caulerpa floridana most reliably differs from C. ashmeadii by the presence of a sharp, unequivocal apiculus at the tip of each pinnule. A morphological review of southwestern Atlantic records of C. floridana from Brazil excludes these reports as representative of the species.  相似文献

We investigated the local environmental controls on daily fluctuations of cumulative radial increment and cambial hydration of three dominant, evergreen tree species from montane, Coastal rainforests of Chiloé Island, Chile (42° 22′ S). During 2 years (1997–1998 and 1998–1999) we recorded hourly cumulative radial increments using electronic band dendrometers in the long‐lived conifer Fitzroya cupressoides (Cupressaceae), the evergreen broad‐leaved Nothofagus nitida (Nothofagaceae), and the narrow‐leaved conifer Podocarpus nubigena (Podocarpaceae). We also measured soil and cambial tissue hydration using capacitance sensors, together with air and soil temperature and rainfall during the period of the study. In addition, we collected cores of these tree species to evaluate how dendrometer measurements reflect annual tree ring width. One‐year long daily time series of cumulative radial increments suggests that radial growth of Fitzroya cupressoides was initiated slowly in early spring, with a maximum in early summer. Multiple regressions showed positive relations between daily precipitation and radial index (i.e. the difference in cumulative radial increment of two consecutive days) in the three species. According to path analysis there was a significant direct effect of changes in tree hydration on radial index of the three focal species. In emergent, pioneer species such as Nothofagus and Fitzroya, radial index was negatively affected by changes in maximum air temperature and photosynthetically active radiation, probably because of high evapotranspiration demand on warm sunny days. The shade‐tolerant species Podocarpus nubigena was positively affected by photosynthetically active radiation. Our diel scale findings support the use of tree ring widths for reconstructing past climate in these southern temperate forests and provide evidence that rainforest trees may be highly sensitive to future declines in rainfall and temperature increases during summer.  相似文献

The photosynthetic oxygen evolution of Caulerpa serrulata was determined with oxygen electrodes. The effects of light and temperature on the growth and regeneration of fragmented C. serrulata thalli were analyzed. The regenerating rate and establishment of different sizes and portions of C. serrulata were studied. The results showed that the light saturation point of C. serrulata was 200 μmol photons/m2 per s and the optimum growth temperature was 25-30℃. Under these conditions, the maximum photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate was 15.1:±0.29 mg O2/mg Chl a/h, the growth rate and elongation rate reached the highest values, 4.67±0.09 mg FW/d and 0.78±0.01 mm/d, respectively. The fragmented C. serrulata thalli was regenerated at 20-35℃ and survived at 15℃ and 200 μmnol photons/m2 per s. A different survival rate was detected according to fragment size. All of these results indicated that C. serrulata was a candidate to become an invasive species if introduced into a new place. Therefore, we should pay more attention to C. serrulata for its potential threat to marine ecosystem when it is sold for aquarium use.  相似文献

Although invasive species are a major threat to survivorship of native species, we know little about their sublethal effects. In soft-sediment marine systems, mat-forming invasive species often have positive effects, facilitating recruitment and enhancing the diversity and abundance of native invertebrates. However, because mat-forming invasive species change the habitat in which they invade, and benthic invertebrates are sensitive to environmental disturbance, important sublethal effects on native species may exist. Using a model marine system we show that the widespread mat-forming invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh has strong negative effects on the reproductive traits of a native bivalve Anadara trapezia (Deshayes, 1840) (e.g. timing of reproductive development and spawning, and follicle and gamete production) even though the invader has positive effects on recruitment. Moreover, gender specific responses occurred and indicated that females were more susceptible to invasion than males. Our results indicate that sublethal effects of an invasive species on reproductive traits will have severe consequences for fitness of the native species.  相似文献
