Summary Root hairs have been shown to enhance P uptake by plants growing in low P soil. Little is known of the factors controlling root hair growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of soil moisture and P level on root hair growth of corn (Zea mays L.). The effect of volumetric soil moistures of 22% (M0), 27% (M1), and 32% (M2) and soil (Raub silt loam, Aquic Argiudoll) P levels of, 0.81 (P0), 12.1 (P1), 21.6 (P2), 48.7 (P3), and 203.3 (P4) mol P L–1 initially in the soil solution, on shoot and root growth, P uptake, and root hair growth of corn was studied in a series of pot experiments in a controlled climate chamber. Root hair growth was affected more by soil moisture than soil P. The percentage of total root length with root hairs and the density and length of root hairs on the root sections having root hairs all increased as soil moisture was reduced from M2 to M0. No relationship was found between root hair length and soil P. Density of root hairs, however, was found to decrease with an increase in soil P. No correlation was found between root hair growth parameters and plant P content, further suggesting P plays a secondary role to moisture in regulating root hair growth in soils. The increase in root hair growth appears to be a response by the plant to stress as yield and P uptake by corn grown at M0 were only 0.47 to 0.82, and 0.34 to 0.74, respectively, of that measured at M1 across the five soil P levels. The increase in root hair growth at M0, which represents an increase of 2.76 to 4.03 in root surface area, could offset, in part, the reduced rate of root growth, which was the primary reason for reduced P uptake under limited soil moisture conditions.Journal Paper No. 10,066 Purdue Univ. Summary Earlier students of the origin of Lotus corniculatus suggested that this tetraploid species arose as an autotetraploid of the closely related diploid species L. tenuis or L. alpinus. More recent studies suggested that L. alpinus and L. japonicus could be ancestral forms. The present study of tannin content, phenolic content, cyanide production, morphology, cytogenetics, Rhizobium specificity and self-incompatibility in the corniculatus group virtually excludes the possibility that L. corniculatus could have arisen through autopolyploidy of L. tenuis or L. alpinus, and suggests that L. corniculatus arose through hybridization of L. alpinus and/or L. tenuis (probably as female parent) with L. uliginosus (probably as male parent), followed by chromosome doubling in the hybrid.  相似文献

Summary Under controlled growth chamber conditions of 30 °C, seed set after selfing is possible in normally self-incompatible rye plants. Within selfed progenies produced by this method, plants homozygous at the peroxidase isozyme locus Prx 7 were crossed to heterozygous individuals. Segregation at the Prx 7 locus in progenies of these crosses provides clear evidence of a close linkage between Prx 7 and one of the two incompatibility loci in rye. A recombination fraction in the range of 0–2% was calculated from the segregation data. In rye, Prx 7 is linked with a phosphoglucoisomerase locus (Pgi). The similarity between the observations in Secale cereale and those made in Lolium perenne is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The relative efficiences of the biparental mating systems and selfing series in connection with phenotypic and geno-phenotypic selection procedures were evaluated for yield improvement in a cross HP1102 X CPAN 1681 of wheat. Two selection cycles having a 4 per cent selection intensity for grain yield were carried out following both selection procedures under the two mating systems. Following these selection procedures, a greater improvement for grain yield could be achieved with the biparental mating system than with the selfing series. During the first selection cycle, the geno-phenotypic selection procedure had an edge over phenotypic selection procedure. The realized response due to the second cycle of selection and the predicted response for the third selection cycle indicated that the phenotypic selection procedure is more efficient than the geno-phenotypic selection procedure. It is suggested that selection following intermating in early segregating generations is able to overcome several inherent limitations of the simple pedigree method as it is possible to increase genetic variation and to concentrate favourable genes and gene combinations for grain yield. An increase in grain yield was, in general, accompanied by an increase in plant height, peduncle length, 100 grain weight, tiller number and biological yield. Therefore, it is suggested that an index comprised of grain yield, plant height, tiller number, grain weight and biological yield could be used for selecting high yielding genotypes of suitable height.  相似文献

Summary Triploids (2n=3X=60) were obtained from genetic male-sterile (ms1 ms1) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] plants. Meiosis, pollen fertility, and chromosome number of their progeny were studied. Studies of meiosis in fertile and sterile triploids revealed no distinguishable differences in chromosome associations. Male-sterile plants formed coenocytic microspores characteristic of the ms1 mutant. Restitution of some dyad and tetrad nuclei were observed in male-sterile plants. Chromosomes of the triploids tended to occur in trivalents during diakinesis and metaphase I (MI), but multivalents, bivalents, and univalents also were observed. Average types and frequencies of chromosome associations per cell in diakinesis and MI from 542 pollen mother cells were 0.004 IX + 0.06 VI + 0.002 V + 0.005 IV + 16.99 III + 1.79 II + 5.03 I. Some secondary associations, nonhomologous pairing, and aberrant nucleolar distributions occasionally were observed. Such behavior support the hypothesis of duplicated genomes and the polyploid origin of soybean. Pollen fertility in male-fertile triploid plants (Ms1 ms1 ms1) varied from 57% to 82%, with an average of about 71%. Chromosome numbers of progenies obtained from these fertile triploids varied from 2n=40 to 2n=71, and exhibited a near-random distribution, with the majority (about 60%) being between 56 and 65. Summary The cultivated lentil L. culinaris and the wild lentil L. ervoides are reproductively isolated from one another due to their hybrid embryo breakdowns. Using embryo culture, vegetatively normal hybrids were obtained. One specific hybrid, heterozygous for a reciprocal translocation, had about 50% gamete viability and produced aborted and viable embryos in a 11 ratio. In the F2, vegetatively normal and highly fertile plants were selected. With the aid of embryo culture techniques, L. ervoides can be included in the wild gene pool of the cultivated lentil.  相似文献

The effect of light on the metabolism of ammonia was studied by subjecting detached maize leaves to 150 or 1350 mol m–2 s–1 PAR during incubation with the leaf base in 2 mM 15NH4Cl. After up to 60 min, leaves were extracted. Ammonia, glutamine, glycine, serine, alanine, and aspartate were separated by isothermal distillation and ion exchange chromatography. 15N enrichments were analyzed by emission spectroscopy. The uptake of ammonium chloride did not influence CO2 assimilation (8.3 and 17.4 mol m–1 s–1 at 150 and 1350 mol m–2 s–1 PAR, respectively). Leaves kept at high light intensity contained more serine and less alanine than leaves from low light treatments. Within 1 h of incubation the enrichment of ammonia extracted from leaves rose to approximately 20% 15N. In the high light regime the amino acids contained up to 15% 15N, whereas in low light 15N enrichments were small (up to 6%). The kinetics of 15N incorporation indicated that NH3 was firstly assimilated into glutamine and then into glutamate. After 15 min 15N was also found in glycine, serine and alanine. At high light intensity nearly half of the 15N was incorporated in glycine. On the other hand, at low light intensity alanine was the predominant 15N sink. It is concluded that light influences ammonia assimilation at the glutamine synthetase reaction.  相似文献

Although both ribavirin (1--ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3carboxamide) and adenine arabinoside inhibited the multiplication of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in mechanically inoculated leaf tissues, neither chemical inhibited virus multiplication in unorganized tobacco callus after in vitro inoculation. The adenine deaminase inhibitor, pentostatin, did not increase the activity of adenine arabinoside in cultured cells. Several different developmental conditions and media did not increase the ability of either chemical to eradicate the virus from tobacco tissue cultures. However, the virus was eradicated from TMV-infected callus when grown in the presence of combinations of ribavirin and adenine arabinoside in shoot inducing medium.  相似文献

Knowledge concerning in vitro growth and developmental responses of bell and chile peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) has been limited. Shoot and root organogenesis in cultures of seedling explants was restricted to primary cultures or those less than three months old under 12-and 16-h photoperiod at 25°C. Shoot organogenesis was extended to 5 months under continuous light at 25°C, and to 8 months under continuous light at 28.5°C. Murashige and Skoog basal media containing 0.05mg/l each of IAA and BA promoted shoot elongation and rooting of some explant sources, while 0.05-4 mg/l IAA with 10–50 mg/l BA promoted adventitious shoot bud formation. Glucose was superior to sucrose as the carbon source. Leaf discs collected from greenhouse-grown plants regenerated shoots for at least 2 months. Incubation environment, carbon source, explant source, growth regulator treatment and passage number were not independent variables as demonstrated by statistical analysis.
