Carbon isotope composition,water-use efficiency and biomass productivity of Eucalyptus microtheca populations under different water supplies 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Variation in carbon isotope composition (δ13C), water-use efficiency (WUE) and biomass productivity were compared among three populations of Eucalyptus microtheca F.
Muell. in a greenhouse. Seedlings were maintained under one well-watered (Control, keeping the soil at field capacity) and
two different water deficit conditions (Drought stress I, keeping the same soil water content; Drought stress II, keeping
the same soil water supply). In each treatment, significant population differences in δ13C, WUE, and dry matter accumulation and allocation were detected. A negative correlation between WUE and biomass productivity
was detected under control and drought stress I, but a positive correlation under drought stress II. The results suggested
that there were different water-use strategies among the populations, the southeastern population with lower WUE may employ
a prodigal water-use strategy, whereas the northwestern and central populations with higher WUE may employ a conservative
water-use strategy. This knowledge may be useful as criteria for genotype selection within a breeding program for this species.

Archaeoglobus fulgidus is an extremely thermophilic archaebacterium that can grow at the expense of lactate oxidation with sulfate to CO2 and H2S. The organism contains coenzyme F420, tetrahydromethanopterin, and methanofuran which are coenzymes previously thought to be unique for methanogenic bacteria. We report here that the bacterium contains methylenetetrahydromethanopterin: F420 oxidoreductase (20 U/mg), methenyltetrahydromethanopterin cyclohydrolase (0.9 U/mg), formyltetrahydromethanopterin: methanofuran formyltransferase (4.4 U/mg), and formylmethanofuran: benzyl viologen oxidoreductase (35 mU/mg). Besides these enzymes carbon monoxide: methyl viologen oxidoreductase (5 U/mg), pyruvate: methyl viologen oxidoreductase (0.7 U/mg), and membranebound lactate: dimethylnaphthoquinone oxidoreductase (0.1 U/mg) were found. 2-Oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, which is a key enzyme of the citric acid cycle, was not detectable. From the enzyme outfit it is concluded that in A. fulgidus lactate is oxidized to CO2 via a modified acetyl-CoA/carbon monoxide dehydrogenase pathway involving C1-intermediates otherwise only used by methanogenic bacteria.Non-standard abbreviations APS

Cells of obligate methylotrophic Gram-negative bacterium Methylobacillus flagellatum KT which can only grow on methanol and methylamine media possess three different carriers mediating uptake of methylamin depending on growth conditions. All three uptake systems are energy-dependent, the methylamine uptake was inhibited by oxidative phosphorylation uncoupler and respiratory inhibitors. The first active transport system for methanol in the cells of obligate methylotroph was also demonstrated. Net carbon flux from agriculture: Carbon emissions, carbon sequestration, crop yield, and land-use change 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
There is a potential to sequester carbon in soil by changing agricultural management practices. These changes in agricultural management can also result in changes in fossil-fuel use, agricultural inputs, and the carbon emissions associated with fossil fuels and other inputs. Management practices that alter crop yields and land productivity can affect the amount of land used for crop production with further significant implications for both emissions and sequestration potential. Data from a 20-year agricultural experiment were used to analyze carbon sequestration, carbon emissions, crop yield, and land-use change and to estimate the impact that carbon sequestration strategies might have on the net flux of carbon to the atmosphere. Results indicate that if changes in management result in decreased crop yields, the net carbon flux can be greater under the new system, assuming that crop demand remains the same and additional lands are brought into production. Conversely, if increasing crop yields lead to land abandonment, the overall carbon savings from changes in management will be greater than when soil carbon sequestration alone is considered. 相似文献

在内蒙古冷蒿小禾草草原1989年围封禁牧地,研究了天然羊尿尿斑土壤化学特性的变化规律,结果表明,土壤pH值于施尿后第2天达到最大值,以后呈下降趋势,58天后pH值基本稳定在6.5左右且低于对照区水平,施尿区土壤可溶性有机碳含量的变化趋势与pH值的变化基本一致,两者存在显著的正相关关系(P<0.01).施尿后土壤总可溶性磷含量显著提高(P<0.05),第2天达到最大值(35.1mg·L^-1)。总可溶性磷各组分钼酸反应磷、可溶性有机磷和可溶性缩合磷百分比均存在两个明显的变化阶段,钼酸反应磷和可溶性有机磷与可溶性缩合磷存在显著的负相关关系(P<0.05).施尿区土壤NH4^+-N在第2天达到最大值。以后呈下降趋势;NO3-N含量14天后开始显著增加,并于第21天达到最大值,其变化呈现明显的“双峰型”特征,并较NH4^+-N存在显著的时滞现象;施尿后土壤可溶性有机氮含量显著增加,并表现为“双峰型”变化特征。 相似文献

Microbial community dynamics alleviate stoichiometric constraints during litter decay 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Under the current paradigm, organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling rates are a function of the imbalance between substrate and microbial biomass stoichiometry. Challenging this view, we demonstrate that in an individual‐based model, microbial community dynamics alter relative C and N limitation during litter decomposition, leading to a system behaviour not predictable from stoichiometric theory alone. Rather, the dynamics of interacting functional groups lead to an adaptation at the community level, which accelerates nitrogen recycling in litter with high initial C : N ratios and thus alleviates microbial N limitation. This mechanism allows microbial decomposers to overcome large imbalances between resource and biomass stoichiometry without the need to decrease carbon use efficiency (CUE), which is in contrast to predictions of traditional stoichiometric mass balance equations. We conclude that identifying and implementing microbial community‐driven mechanisms in biogeochemical models are necessary for accurately predicting terrestrial C fluxes in response to changing environmental conditions. 相似文献

The impacts of various nitrogen sources, i.e. NO−
3, NH4
+ or NH4NO3 in combination with gaseous NH3, on nitrogen-, carbon- and water-use efficiency and 13C discrimination (δ13C) by plants of the C3 species Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) and the C4 species Zea mays L. (maize) were studied. Triticum aestivum and Z. mays were hydroponically grown with 2 mol · m−3 of N supplied as NO−
3, NH4
+ or NH4NO3 for 21 and 18 d, respectively, and thereafter exposed to gaseous NH3 at 320 μg · m−3 or to ambient air for 7 d. In T. aestivum and Z. mays over a 7-d growth period, nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) values were influenced by N-sources in the decreasing order NH4NO3-N > NO−
3-N > NH4
+-N and NO−
3-N > NH4NO3-N > NH4
+-N, respectively. Fumigation with NH3 decreased the NUE values of plants grown with any of the N-forms. During 28- and 7-d growth periods, N-sources affected water-use
efficiency (WUE) values in the decreasing order of NH4
+-N > NO−
3-N≈NH4NO3-N in non-fumigated T. aestivum, while fumigation with NH3 increased the WUE of NO−
3-grown plants. There were insignificant effects of N-sources on WUE values of Z. mays over 25- and 7-d growth periods. Furthermore, δ13C values in plant tissues (leaves, stubble and roots) were higher (less negative) in NH4
+-grown plants of T. aestivum and Z. mays than in those supplied with NH4NO3 or NO−
3. Regardless of the N-form supplied to the roots of the plant species, exposure to NH3 caused more-positive δ13C values in the plant tissues. These results indicate that the variations in N-source were associated with small but significant
variations in δ13C values in plants of T. aestivum and Z. mays. These differences in δ13C values are in the direction expected from differences in WUE values over long or short growth periods and with differences
in the extent of non-Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase, EC 4.1.1.39) carboxylate contribution to net
C acquisition, as a function of N-source.

Abstract. We describe an approach for developing a Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM) that accounts for transient changes in vegetation distribution over a decadal time scale. The DGVM structure is based on a linkage between an equilibrium global vegetation model and smaller scale ecosystem dynamics modules that simulate the rate of vegetation change. Vegetation change is classified into four basic types, based largely on the projected change in above-ground biomass of the vegetation. These four types of change are: (1) dieback of forest, shrubland or grassland; (2) successional replacement within forest, shrubland or grassland; (3) invasion of forest, shrubland or grassland; (4) change in tree/grass ratio. We then propose an approach in which the appropriate ecosystem dynamics module for each type of change is applied and the grid cells of the global model updated accordingly. An approach for accounting for fire, as an example of a disturbance which may strongly influence the rate and spatial pattern of forest dieback, is incorporated. We also discuss data needs for the development, calibration and validation of the model. 相似文献

Nutrient concentration in shape Sphagna at increased N-deposition rates and raised atmospheric CO2 concentrations 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sphagnum fuscum, S. magellanicum, S. angustifolium and S. warnstorfii were treated with N deposition rates (0, 10, 30 and 100 kg ha-1 a-1) and with four atmospheric CO2 concentrations (350, 700, 1000 and 2000 ppm) in greenhouse for 71–120 days. Thereafter, concentrations of total N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the capitulae of the Sphagna were determined. The response of each species to N deposition was related to ecological differences. With increasing N deposition treatments, moss N concentrations increased and higher N:P-ratios were found, the increase being especially clear at the highest N load. Sphagnum fuscum, which occupies ombrotrophic habitats, was the most affected by the increased nitrogen load and as a consequence the other elements were decreased. Oligotrophic S. magellanicum, wide nutrient status tolerant S. angustifolium and meso-eutrophic S. warnstorfii tolerated better increased N deposition, though there were increased concentrations of Ca and Mg in S. warnstorfii and Mg in S. magellanicum. Nitrogen and P concentrations decreased with raised CO2 concentrations, except for S. magellanicum. This seems to be the first time this kind of response in nutrient concentrations to enhanced CO2 concentration has been shown to exist in bryophytes. The concentration of K clearly decreased in S. fuscum as did the concentration of Mg in the other Sphagna with increasing CO2. We present the results of a 5-year examination of variation in the stable carbon isotope composition () of three C3 graminoid species from a Sandhills prairie: Agropyron smithii, Carex heliophila and Stipa comata. Although consistent species-specific patterns for mean were seen, there was also significant and substantial among-year and within-season variation in . A smaller contribution to variation in came from topographic variation among sampling sites. Effects of species, year, season and topography contribute to variation in in an additive manner. An association between climate and exists that is consistent with previous work suggesting that reflects the interplay between photosynthetic gas exchange and plant water relations. Within the growing season, the time over which integrates plant response to the environment ranges from days to months. 相似文献
