The use of a Monte–Carlo formalism in a centrifugal gas process separation simulation provides an efficient predictor of dew-pointing as a function of the imposed radial pressure gradient. Previously, this was done by simply calculating radial pressure and then resorting to a separate equation of state routine for evaluating whether condensation will occur or not. In our model, we incorporate the potential energy associated with rotation of a gas element into the simulation along with molecular interaction terms. This enables us to predict when sufficient nucleation has occurred that condensed material forms—an important limit for stable operation of a gas centrifuge.  相似文献

We investigated a carbon nanoribbon (CNR) using atomistic simulations based on Tersoff–Brenner potential function. The CNR was obtained from a compressed (5,5) carbon nanotube (CNT). The obtained CNR had a cross-sectional view as a binocular telescope structure composed of both sp2 and sp3 bonds. One carbon atom per ten carbon atoms had sp3 bond. For the optimized structures, the residual forces on the CNR were 3-order higher than that on the CNR and the lattice constant of the CNR was higher 0.0624?Å than that of the CNT along the tube axis. The Young's modulus of the CNR was the same as that of the CNT whereas the critical strain of the CNR was significantly lower than that of the CNT because the residual stresses on the CNR was very higher than those on the CNT. The tensile force curve vs. the strain of the CNT was slightly higher than that of the CNR.  相似文献

The Middle Palaeolithic site of Payre in southeastern France yields abundant archaeological material associated with fossil hominid remains. With its long sequence of Middle Pleistocene deposits, Payre is a key site to study the Middle Palaeolithic chronology of this region. This study is the first to investigate carbon and oxygen isotope contents of Neanderthal tooth enamel bioapatite, together with a wide range of herbivorous and carnivorous species. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of hunting behaviour, resource partitioning, diet and habitat use of animals and Neanderthals through a palaeoecological reconstruction.  相似文献

The electrical phenomena and morphing structures in the Venus flytrap have attracted researchers since the nineteenth century. We have observed that mechanical stimulation of trigger hairs on the lobes of the Venus flytrap induces electrotonic potentials in the lower leaf. Electrostimulation of electrical circuits in the Venus flytrap can induce electrotonic potentials propagating along the upper and lower leaves. The instantaneous increase or decrease in voltage of stimulating potential generates a nonlinear electrical response in plant tissues. Any electrostimulation that is not instantaneous, such as sinusoidal or triangular functions, results in linear responses in the form of small electrotonic potentials. The amplitude and sign of electrotonic potentials depend on the polarity and the amplitude of the applied voltage. Electrical stimulation of the lower leaf induces electrical signals, which resemble action potentials, in the trap between the lobes and the midrib. The trap closes if the stimulating voltage is above the threshold level of 4.4 V. Electrical responses in the Venus flytrap were analyzed and reproduced in the discrete electrical circuit. The information gained from this study can be used to elucidate the coupling of intracellular and intercellular communications in the form of electrical signals within plants.  相似文献

A multiple-bile-ion-sensing polyvinyl chloride-based membrane electrode capable of monitoring any of the three common bile ions in humans, namely, cholate, deoxycholate, and chenodeoxycholate, was developed and characterized. Compared to single-bile-ion-sensing electrodes, it showed a sub-Nernstian response. All other electrode properties were, however, similar, making this a successful replacement for three individual electrodes. With appropriate conditioning, this electrode could repeatedly change selectivity without losing membrane activity. It was reproducible, was stable for 5 months, had low response time, and could be used to measure critical micelle concentrations. The lower limit of detection was 10 nM. Selectivity coefficients for various anions with respect to bile ions more or less followed the Hoffmeister series. Plots of R ((Nernst equivalent of slope in the presence of primary ion and a fixed amount of interfering ion)/(slope in the presence of only the primary ion)) vs square root of ionic strength for an interfering ion were linear. One major application of this electrode is its use in kinetics. We have tested its ability to monitor continuously changing bile ion concentrations during their interactions with a biocompatible polymer, polyethylene glycol (6000), and determined rate constants.  相似文献

Ammonia emissions during composting result in the reduced value of agronomic production and can also pollute the air. To evaluate the influence of various carbon sources on ammonia emissions, six composting experiments were carried out with different amendments of carbon sources (glucose, sucrose and straw powder). The cumulative ammonia volatilizations were reduced from 3.11 g/kg (R6) to 2.46 g/kg (R1), 2.17 g/kg (R2), 2.23 g/kg (R4) and 1.93 g/kg (R5). Compared to the control, no significant difference of ammonia emissions and carbon degradation was observed for the mixture of R3 (3.15 g/kg), which was amended with straw powder alone. The co-addition of sucrose and straw powder led to the lowest ammonia emissions. According to these results, a higher C/N ratio did not necessarily indicate an effective solution for reducing ammonia emissions, and not all readily available carbon compounds were helpful in reducing ammonia emissions. The addition of sucrose promoted the decomposition of organic carbon during the intensive stage of ammonia emissions, and the combination of straw and sucrose prolonged this promotion. Thus, the co-addition of sucrose and straw powder made it possible to reduce ammonia emissions drastically by nitrogen immobilization.  相似文献

Abstract

The nature of H+ and Cu2+ binding by soil-derived humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acid was characterised using potentiometric titrations. The experimental data obtained showed that the derived proton balance equation was valid and capable of describing proton consumption by both polyelectrolytes. HA was found to be more acidic and more reactive as shown by its lower equivalent weight compared to FA. Acid consumption by HA during titrations was little affected at ionic strength (μ) up to 0.1 M although it was enhanced at higher μ. Displacement of protons by Cu2+ resulted in a nonlinear sigmoidal pattern suggesting the formation of different Cu-HA chelates, or existence of sites that differed in their affinities for Cu on the ligand. Different concentrations of added Cu appeared to favour one or both mechanisms, although the titration method could not differentiate which of the probable mechanisms was more dominant at a specific level of Cu added. Similar values were obtained for conditional stability constants using either the equation of Scatchard or Ruzic.  相似文献

Due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, our oceans have gradually become warmer and more acidic. To better understand the consequences of this, there is a need for long‐term (months) and multistressor experiments. Earlier research demonstrates that the effects of global climate change are specific to species and life stages. We exposed berried Norway lobsters (Nephrops norvegicus), during 4 months to the combination of six ecologically relevant temperatures (5–18°C) and reduced pH (by 0.4 units). Embryonic responses were investigated by quantifying proxies for development rate and fitness including: % yolk consumption, mean heart rate, rate of oxygen consumption, and oxidative stress. We found no interactions between temperature and pH, and reduced pH only affected the level of oxidative stress significantly, with a higher level of oxidative stress in the controls. Increased temperature and % yolk consumed had positive effects on all parameters except on oxidative stress, which did not change in response to temperature. There was a difference in development rate between the ranges of 5–10°C (Q10: 5.4) and 10–18°C (Q10: 2.9), implicating a thermal break point at 10°C or below. No thermal limit to a further increased development rate was found. The insensitivity of N. norvegicus embryos to low pH might be explained by adaptation to a pH‐reduced external habitat and/or internal hypercapnia during incubation. Our results thus indicate that this species would benefit from global warming and be able to withstand the predicted decrease in ocean pH in the next century during their earliest life stages. However, future studies need to combine low pH and elevated temperature treatments with hypoxia as hypoxic events are frequently and increasingly occurring in the habitat of benthic species.  相似文献

Stem cells are needed for an increasing number of scientific applications, including both fundamental research and clinical disease treatment. To meet this rising demand, improved expansion methods to generate high quantities of high quality stem cells must be developed. Unfortunately, the bicarbonate buffering system – which relies upon an elevated CO2 environment – typically used to maintain pH in stem cell cultures introduces several unnecessary limitations in bioreactor systems. In addition to artificially high dissolved CO2 levels negatively affecting cell growth, but more importantly, the need to sparge CO2 into the system complicates the ability to control culture parameters. This control is especially important for stem cells, whose behavior and phenotype is highly sensitive to changes in culture conditions such as dissolved oxygen and pH. As a first step, this study developed a buffer to support expansion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) under an atmospheric CO2 environment in static cultures. MSC expanded under atmospheric CO2 with this buffer achieved equivalent growth rates without adaptation compared to those grown in standard conditions and also maintained a stem cell phenotype, self‐renewal properties, and the ability to differentiate into multiple lineages after expansion. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Bioenergy makes up a significant portion of the global primary energy pie, and its production from modernized technology is foreseen to substantially increase. The climate neutrality of biogenic CO2 emissions from bioenergy grown from sustainably managed biomass resource pools has recently been questioned. The temporary change caused in atmospheric CO2 concentration from biogenic carbon fluxes was found to be largely dependent on the length of biomass rotation period. In this work, we also show the importance of accounting for the unutilized biomass that is left to decompose in the resource pool and how the characterization factor for the climate impact of biogenic CO2 emissions changes whether residues are removed for bioenergy or not. With the case of Norwegian Spruce biomass grown in Norway, we found that significantly more biogenic CO2 emissions should be accounted towards contributing to global warming potential when residues are left in the forest. For a 100‐year time horizon, the global warming potential bio factors suggest that between 44 and 62% of carbon‐flux, neutral biogenic CO2 emissions at the energy conversion plant should be attributed to causing equivalent climate change potential as fossil‐based CO2 emissions. For a given forest residue extraction scenario, the same factor should be applied to the combustion of any combination of stem and forest residues. Life cycle analysis practitioners should take these impacts into account and similar region/species specific factors should be developed.  相似文献
