We investigated whether metasternal gland (MG) products mediate male aggregation during mating in Rhodnius prolixus (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) Stål, 1859, through selective occlusion of female MGs. Pairs of insects presenting intact MGs mated and other males aggregated around them confirming conclusions from previous studies. However, when female MGs were occluded, males did not aggregate. Conversely, the occlusion of male MGs did not affect aggregation of males. The present experiments demonstrated that the products emitted by the MGs of a mating R. prolixus female induce other males to aggregate around the mating pair. Aggregation behaviour of males probably results from the eventual release of volatiles from the female's MGs. We reinforce the hypothesis suggesting that the compounds produced by the MGs of R. prolixus act as sexual communication signals for this species. 相似文献

Aquaporin-5 (AQP5), an apical plasma membrane (APM) water channel in salivary glands, lacrimal glands, and airway epithelium, has an important role in fluid secretion. The activation of M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) or α1-adrenoceptors on the salivary glands induces salivary fluid secretion. AQP5 localizes in lipid rafts and activation of the M3 mAChRs or α1-adrenoceptors induced its translocation together with the lipid rafts to the APM in the interlobular ducts of rat parotid glands. This review focuses on the mechanisms of AQP5 translocation together with lipid rafts to the APM in the interlobular duct cells of parotid glands of normal rats and the impairment of AQP5 translocation in diabetes and senescence. 相似文献

A tick B-cell inhibitory protein from salivary glands of the hard tick, Hyalomma asiaticum asiaticum

Some studies done to date suggest that B-cell inhibitory factor occurred in tick saliva. In this study, a novel protein having B-cell inhibitory activity was purified and characterized from the salivary glands of the hard tick, Hyalomma asiaticum asiaticum. This protein was named B-cell inhibitory factor (BIF). The cDNA encoding BIF was cloned by cDNA library screening. The predicted protein from the cDNA sequence is composed of 138 amino acids including the mature BIF. No similarity was found by Blast search. The lipopolysaccharide-induced B-cell proliferation was inhibited by BIF. This is the first report of the identification and characterization of B-cell inhibitory protein from tick. The current study facilitates the study of identifying the interaction among tick, Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, and host. 相似文献

Male German cockroaches possess secretory glands that secrete fluid into a pair of transverse depressions on the seventh and eighth abdominal tergites. We investigated the effects of altered juvenoid titer during the first part of the last instar on tergal gland secretory tissue development and the production of tergal gland secretion proteins. Male fifth (last) instar nymphs (1-3 days post-emergent) were topically treated with the JH analog pyriproxyfen. Light and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that treatment with pyriproxyfen produced a visible decrease in the amount of tergal gland tissue present, a deformation of the overall shape of the gland located on tergite seven, and a less orderly arrangement of the secretory cells in the tissue. The protein fraction of tergal gland secretion was examined in pyriproxyfen-treated and control insects 1, 5, and 15 days after the insects molted to the adult stage. Amounts of all tergal secretion proteins were reduced in treated insects. 相似文献

Grobya amherstiae flowers release a honey‐like scent produced by an osmophore, comprising a papillate epidermis. The scent attracts bee pollinators (Paratetrapedia fervida), which collect floral oils produced by elaiophores on the lip apex and column base. The secretory tissue of the elaiophore on the lip apex consists of both palisade‐like epidermal cells and conspicuously elongated unicellular trichomes. From an anatomical point of view, this elaiophore differs in structure from those known in angiosperms to date. The elaiophore on the column base is exclusively composed of short unicellular trichomes. In addition, there is an elaiophore comprising a papillate epidermis on the internal surface of the lip. The elaiophores produce a heterogeneous secretion, composed of fatty acids and mucilage. The elaiophore on the internal surface of the lip produces oil in non‐collectible amounts, but it is enough to maintain the interest of the bees, guiding them to the elaiophore on the column base, a necessary step in pollination. The former elaiophore is here identified as an oil guide and it plays an essential role in ensuring pollination. Age-related changes were examined in the distribution and severity of spontaneous lesions in the neuroepithelium and Bowman’s
glands in mouse olfactory mucosa. The olfactory mucosa of female ICR mice at postnatal ages from 10 days to 16 months were
investigated histologically by hematoxylin and eosin staining, high-iron diamine-Alcian blue (HID-AB) staining, and immunohistochemistry
for olfactory marker protein (OMP), βIII tubulin (βIIIT), and Ki67. The lesions in the neuroepithelium and Bowman’s glands
were quantitatively assessed by morphometric analyses of sections stained with anti-OMP antibody or HID-AB. The first appearance
of neuroepithelial abnormality was observed in the dorsomedial portion of the olfactory mucosa in 5-month-old mice. The distribution
and severity of lesions progressed with increasing age. In mildly affected epithelium in which OMP-positive olfactory receptor
neurons (ORNs) were present but in smaller amounts, the numbers of βIIIT-positive and Ki67-positive neuroepithelial cells
tended to be increased, indicating that neurogenesis was upregulated in these areas. In contrast, severely affected epithelium
in which OMP-positive ORNs were virtually absent showed high variability in the numbers of βIIIT- and Ki67-positive cells
among the areas examined, probably reflecting differences in the capacity of the basal cells remaining in the affected area
to generate new neuronal cells. Histological analysis with HID-AB revealed that spontaneous lesions in Bowman’s glands also
occurred in aged mouse olfactory mucosa. Lesions in the neuroepithelium and underlying Bowman’s glands tended to be spatially
co-localized, suggesting a close association between pathogeneses in these two structures. Moreover, lesions in Bowman’s glands
were associated with changes in the biochemical composition of mucus on the olfactory mucosa. This information should prove
useful in improving the understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying age-related changes in the peripheral olfactory
system.

Neuropeptides are crucial regulators of development and various physiological functions but little is known about their identity,
expression and function in vectors of pathogens causing serious diseases, such as ticks. Therefore, we have used antibodies
against multiple insect and crustacean neuropeptides to reveal the presence of these bioactive molecules in peptidergic neurons
and cells of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. These antibodies have detected 15 different immunoreactive compounds expressed in specific central and peripheral neurons
associated with the synganglion. Most central neurons arborize in distinct areas of the neuropile or the putative neurohaemal
periganglionic sheath of the synganglion. Several large identified neurons in the synganglion project multiple processes through
peripheral nerves to form elaborate axonal arborizations on the surface of salivary glands or to terminate in the lateral
segmental organs (LSO). Additional neuropeptide immunoreactivity has been observed in intrinsic secretory cells of the LSO.
We have also identified two novel clusters of peripheral neurons embedded in the cheliceral and paraspiracular nerves. These
neurons project branching axons into the synganglion and into the periphery. Our study has thus revealed a complex network
of central and peripheral peptidergic neurons, putative neurohaemal and neuromodulatory structures and endocrine cells in
the tick comparable with those found in insect and crustacean neuroendocrine systems. Strong specific staining with a large
variety of antibodies also indicates that the tick nervous system and adjacent secretory organs are rich sources of diverse
neuropeptides related to those identified in insects, crustaceans or even vertebrates.

Many lizards produce chemical secretions that may be used as pheromones in reproductive behavior, but only a few studies have identified chemical compounds in secretions. By using GC–MS, we found only 20 lipophilic compounds in femoral glands secretion of male lizards, Psammodromus hispanicus. Main compounds were six steroids (mainly cholesterol and campesterol) and seven n-C9 to n-C18 carboxylic acids (especially dodecanoic acid), and minor components were six alcohols between C16 and C29 and squalene. We compared these chemicals with those previously found in secretions of the closely related sister species Psammodromus algirus and other lizard species. 相似文献
