The maturation of tick (Acari: Ixodoidea) spermatozoa, after their transfer to the female, is induced by secretions of the male accessory gland which are added to the prospermia during ejaculation. Analysis of the secretions from male Ornithodoros moubata (Argasidae) and Dermacentor variabilis (Ixodidae) indicates that the factor responsible for inducing maturation is a polypeptide with a molecular weight of about 12,500. Although the polypeptides from the two species are similar in most respects, each will not activate the prospermia of the other species. The mode of action of the factor is hormone-like, inasmuch as a few minutes of exposure of the sperm to the factor are sufficient to trigger the entire maturation sequence, which takes 12–24 h in vitro.  相似文献

Ageing can reduce the probability that individuals reproduce. The present study investigates whether ageing influences the mating frequency of mass‐reared fertile and sterile Mexican fruit flies Anastrepha ludens (Loew). The ability of males of different ages to inhibit female remating is also determined, and the growth of male reproductive organs is measured as they age. Young males (6 days old) have a lower mating frequency than older males, and also have a lower capacity to inhibit female remating than older males. However, 7‐day‐old males are as likely to inhibit female remating as older males. Young males also have smaller reproductive organs than middle‐aged (21‐day‐old) or senescent males (57‐day‐old). These results have implications for the sterile insect technique because sterilized males of A. ludens are released in the field 6 days after emergence. The highest mating frequency, the lowest mating latency and the largest size of testes are observed at 21 days of age. Older males (57 days old) have more sperm in their seminal vesicles than young males (6 and 9 days old). Accessory glands take longer to grow to their complete size compared with testes, and mating frequency is more closely associated with accessory gland size than testes size. Furthermore, there are more sperm in the seminal vesicles during the afternoon period of peak sexual activity than during the morning when sexual activity is absent. These results indicate that, even at the onset of reproductive senescence, mass‐reared males of A. ludens are still capable of mating, as well as inhibiting remating in females.  相似文献

Secretions from the preacetabular glands of cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni were collected over skin surface lipid on a warmed glass surface in a system providing a temperature gradient. Proteolytic activity of these secretions was linear with respect to the numbers of cercariae secreting. The enzyme was relatively storage stable in water or glycine-NaOH buffer. It was highly sensitive to the buffer system, glycine-NaOH buffer providing the highest proteolytic activity against Azocoll and gelatin substrates. In the glycine buffer, the pH optimum for the enzyme was 8.5–8.8; the temperature optimum was 51 C with the Q10 for Azocoll hydrolysis in the range of 30–50 C approximately 2.2. Of the activity 0.4% was lost at 5 C, 1.7% at 35 C, and 100% at 60 C within 10–15 min. Two Sephadex column chromatography fractions showed proteolytic activity against Azocoll. The fraction with greatest activity was not associated with either of the two peaks of high absorbancy at 280 nm, but the lower proteolytic peak coincided with the lower absorbancy peak in the area of peptides below 10,000 MW. Calibration of the Sephadex column with proteins of known molecular weight showed the MW of the main proteolytic fraction of the secretion to be approximately 25,000–27,000.  相似文献

Preliminary results obtained from histological analyses of the male reproductive organs, supplemented with field and behavioural data, indicate that Sufflogobius bibarbatus, a small, slow growing gobiid exhibiting low fecundity, which plays an important role in the food web off Namibia, where large areas of the shelf are hypoxic, spawns demersally. Large males defend benthic nests, possibly at the edge of the hypoxic shelf. Male reproductive strategy appears to be flexible, and tentative evidence to suggest that polygyny and sneaking may also occur is presented.  相似文献

Removal of the accessory reproductive glands in female Schistocerca gregaria does not prevent the formation of eggplugs as expected. The egg pods formed are incomplete, with froth in the egg plug partially lacking. The extent of collapse is dependent on the time of removal of the glands. These results suggest that the genital ducts (egg calyces and lateral oviducts) play a significant role in the production of egg pod material, and the accessory glands probably participate in the process. Ligation of the glands has the same effect on egg pod structure; secretion accumulates in the glands indicating that, although the contribution made to the egg pod by the glands is small, they are not vestigial and are not acting simply as reservoirs for secretions produced distally. Cautery of the Comstock-Kellogg glands produces no visible change in egg pod structure or in method of formation, and thus their function remains undetermined. In the absence of the ventral median pouch egg masses are laid without the plug. A thin layer of nonvacuolated material is smeared over the walls of the oviposition hole, suggesting that the secretions produced in the upper regions of the genital ducts are added to or modified by an additional secretion from this gland, before being released to the exterior.  相似文献

罹患头颈部肿瘤的患者在接受放射治疗时往往会发生放射性唾液腺损伤。射线的照射使患者唾液腺结构破坏、功能减退,患者的生活质量严重下降。对于放射性唾液腺损伤,临床上尚无有效的治疗方式。骨髓来源细胞(bone marrow-derived cells,BMDCs)最早用于治疗血液系统疾病。随着对BMDCs认识的逐渐深入,BMDCs的应用领域日益广泛。近些年来,一些动物实验的研究结果表明,利用BMDCs治疗放射性唾液腺损伤能够有效地保护腺体内各种实质细胞,促进腺组织再生,恢复唾液腺功能。本文主要对利用BMDCs治疗放射性唾液腺损伤的治疗方式、治疗效果及其主要的治疗机制进行综述,并对该领域今后的研究方向进行了展望。  相似文献

Notostigmophora (Scutigeromorpha) exhibit a special tracheal system compared to other Chilopoda. The unpaired spiracles are localized medially on the long tergites and open into a wide atrium from which hundreds of tracheal tubules originate and extend into the pericardial sinus. Previous investigators reported that the tracheal tubules float freely in the hemolymph. However, here we show for the first time that the tracheal tubules are anchored to a part of the pericardial septum. Another novel finding is this part of the pericardial septum is structured as an aggregated gland on the basis of its specialized epithelium being formed by hundreds of oligocellular glands. It remains unclear whether the pericardial septum has a differently structure in areas that lack a connection with tracheal tubules. The tracheal tubules come into direct contact with the canal cells of the glands that presumably secrete mucous substances covering the entire luminal cuticle of the tracheal tubules. Connections between tracheae and glands have not been observed in any other arthropods.  相似文献

It has been recently reported that telocytes, a stromal (interstitial) cell subset involved in the control of local tissue homeostasis, are hampered in the target organs of inflammatory/autoimmune disorders. Since no data concerning telocytes in minor salivary glands (MSGs) are currently available, aim of the study was to evaluate telocyte distribution in MSGs with normal architecture, non‐specific chronic sialadenitis (NSCS) and primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS)‐focal lymphocytic sialadenitis. Twelve patients with pSS and 16 sicca non‐pSS subjects were enrolled in the study. MSGs were evaluated by haematoxylin and eosin staining and immunofluorescence for CD3/CD20 and CD21 to assess focus score, Tarpley biopsy score, T/B cell segregation and germinal center (GC)‐like structures. Telocytes were identified by immunoperoxidase‐based immunohistochemistry for CD34 and CD34/platelet‐derived growth factor receptor α double immunofluorescence. Telocytes were numerous in the stromal compartment of normal MSGs, where their long cytoplasmic processes surrounded vessels and encircled both the excretory ducts and the secretory units. In NSCS, despite the presence of a certain degree of inflammation, telocytes were normally represented. Conversely, telocytes were markedly reduced in MSGs from pSS patients compared to normal and NSCS MSGs. Such a decrease was associated with both worsening of glandular inflammation and progression of ectopic lymphoid neogenesis, periductal telocytes being reduced in the presence of smaller inflammatory foci and completely absent in the presence of GC‐like structures. Our findings suggest that a loss of MSG telocytes might have important pathophysiological implications in pSS. The specific pro‐inflammatory cytokine milieu of pSS MSGs might be one of the causes of telocyte loss.  相似文献

The only well established function of the prothoracic glands (PGs) of insects is the production of ecdysteroids. In gregarious locusts, like in most insect species, the PGs degenerate soon after the adult molt. In this way they resemble the thymus of mammals, a gland with an important role in the build up of the immune system in young animals. In adult solitarious locusts the PGs persist much longer, however without producing substantial amounts of ecdysteroids. In the literature the existence of a well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex system has been repeatedly reported, suggesting an active role in peptide or/and protein synthesis and release. The nature of the secreted products remained unknown. Our pepdidomic analysis of an acidified methanolic extract of PGs of last instar gregarious nymphs did not yield any indication for the presence of known locust or other peptides. The peptide release assay was also negative. For our proteomic analysis, we developed an EST-based identification strategy. We successfully identified 50 protein spots on a two dimensional map. In addition to typical protein synthesis-related proteins, a number of proteins with a role in detoxification processes were found, suggesting some role of the PGs in the defense system.  相似文献
