Previous studies on Trinidadian guppies have shown an apparent association of genetic variability, expressed as mean heterozygosity (Ho) at allozyme loci, with river order: fish from lowland sites exhibit higher mean Ho than their upland counterparts. Detailed genetic and behavioural observations were undertaken in the present study by repeated sampling throughout two river courses to examine population heterogeneity. Results show that the predation regime mediated mating behaviour of upland and lowland populations in the wild is not as divergent as previous laboratory observations have suggested. Furthermore, genetic variation at the eight loci variable in Trinidadian populations (p100 =0·13–O·88, H0 =O·03–0·23) appears to bear little association with predation regime, but is related to sub-structuring of populations by habitat features and geographic isolation. We therefore conclude that the observed patterns of genetic variability arise primarily as a consequence of stochastic as opposed to deterministic factors. 相似文献

Survival, development and fecundity of cohorts of the mealybug Phenacoccus parvus Morrison were measured over one generation on seven plant species representing four plant families. Survival, development and fecundity were not significantly higher on the mealybug's principal field host, the weed Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae), than on other plant species including Lycopersicon esculentum Miller (tomato) and Solanum melongena L. (eggplant). The acceptability of the leaves of the seven plant species to P. parvus first instar crawlers was measured on hatching, after active walking and after food deprivation. Lantana camara was the highest ranked plant species for all treatments. The number of crawlers settling on lower ranked plant species increased with the level of food deprivation. 相似文献

A theoretical model has been developed in order to describe the organization of acyl chains in phospholipid bilayers. Since the model is intended to reproduce highly quantitative experimental results such as the deuterium magnetic resonance (NMR) data and to supplement the experimental information, all the rotameric degrees of freedom, the excluded volume interactions and the van der Waals interactions have been considered. The model is a direct extension of a generalized van der Waals theory of nematic liquid crystals to flexible molecules. In this picture, the anisotropy of the short-range repulsive forces which are treated by a hard core potential is introduced as the dominant factor governing intrinsic order among the chains. The anisotropy of the attractive forces, which are approximated by a molecular field, plays a somewhat secondary role. The dependence of the energy of interaction on the relative chain conformations is approximated by two order parameters reflecting respectively the ‘average shape’ of the molecules and the ‘average shape’ in a ‘mean orientation’. The influence of the interactions in the polar region on the lateral chain area is accounted for by an effective lateral pressure. In risk assessment and environmental monitoring studies, concentration measurements frequently fall below detection limits (DL) of measuring instruments, resulting in left-censored data. The principal approaches for handling censored data include the substitution-based method, maximum likelihood estimation, robust regression on order statistics, and Kaplan-Meier. In practice, censored data are substituted with an arbitrary value prior to use of traditional statistical methods. Although some studies have evaluated the substitution performance in estimating population characteristics, they have focused mainly on normally and lognormally distributed data that contain a single DL. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to assess the impact of substitution when estimating population parameters based on censored data containing multiple DLs. We also consider different distributional assumptions including lognormal, Weibull, and gamma. We show that the reliability of the estimates after substitution is highly sensitive to distributional characteristics such as mean, standard deviation, skewness, and also data characteristics such as censoring percentage. The results highlight that although the performance of the substitution-based method improves as the censoring percentage decreases, its performance still depends on the population's distributional characteristics. Practical implications that follow from our findings indicate that caution must be taken in using the substitution method when analyzing censored environmental data. 相似文献

The reasons for lipid diversity in membranes are not understood. Here we review evidence supporting the proposal that factors related to the polymorphic capabilities of lipids provide a rationale for lipid diversity. In particular, the ability of lipids to adopt different polymorphic phases appears to be related to a generalized shape property, where lipids with a cylindrical geometry preferentially adopt the bilayer phase whereas ‘cone’ shaped lipids adopt the hexagonal HII phase. Lipid diversity may then be considered to satisfy three demands. The first is obviously a need for bilayer forming lipids to provide the basic permeability barrier, whereas the second concerns a need for non-bilayer lipids and associated structures for fusion and related membrane contact phenomena to proceed. A third, and less obvious demand satisfied by non-bilayer lipids concerns the ability of lipids of different shapes to modulate the order in the hydrocarbon region when constrained to a bilayer organization.
