Summary Genetic improvement in growth of poultry has traditionally proceeded via selection for body weight at a fixed age. Due to increased maintenance costs and reproductive problems of adult broiler breeders, the potential for genetic manipulation of the growth curve has been receiving increased interest. Research of both male and female progeny of a three-way diallel cross was used to investigate the inheritance of growth curve parameters. The Laird form of the Gompertz equation was used to determine growth curve parameters, and was suited to the juvenile growth data frequently collected from meat-type chickens. Growth rate exhibited significant heterosis due to both autosomes and the sex chromosomes. Age at inflection point also exhibited significant average heterosis, though only among females. Growth rate was also influenced by average line effects, as was age at inflection point. Maternal effects had no influence on growth curve parameters, while additive sex linkage was observed for growth rate. Phenotypic and genetic correlations were calculated among the growth curve parameters and suggest that specific breeding programs could alter the growth trajectory of the contemporary broiler chicken. Moderate heritabilities were observed for the growth curve parameters and support the hypothesis that the growth curve could be altered via genetic manipulation of early postnatal growth, especially during the first 14 days post-hatch.  相似文献

1.  Physiological adaptation to hypothermia were studied in newly hatched great snipe chicks (Gallinago media) by measuring oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (RF), and body temperature (Tb) at different ambient temperatures (Ta).
2.  Tb of 1-day-old chicks at Ta of 35°C stabilized at about 40°C. At Ta between 20 and 30°C the chicks maintained a Tb about 8°C above Ta. Hatchlings maintained a higher gradient when active than when resting. Below 20°C they were unable to maintain a stable Tb.
3.  In resting hatchlings VO2 was similar at Ta between 35 and 20°C (Tb 40–30°C), VO2 range 1.7–2.5 ml·g-1·h-1. Below 20°C, VO2 declined with time.
4.  The HR of 1-day-old chicks fell linearly with Tb during cooling. The Q10 of the HR was 1.7 at Tb 38°C and increased to 3.0 at 29°C. The RF showed a slight tendency to decrease with decreasing Tb.
5.  It is concluded that the ability to maintain normal dexterity at low Tb is an important aspect of snipe survival strategy. Maintaining a temperature gradient rather than a constant high Tb presumably saves energy. It is suggested that the mechanisms whereby VO2 is maintained at a low Tb may involve isoenzymes and adaptations of the nervous system. However, such adaptations would not seem to affect the pacemaker mechanism as evidenced by the high Q10 of the HR.

This paper reports the physical growth and body composition from the first year of longitudinal study of 519 Guatemalan children, and their families, from a disadvantaged urban community consisting largely of refugees of the 1976 earthquake. Four cohorts are described, composed of children of 1,3,5, and 7 years at examination. The children are smaller, weigh less, and have reduced fat stores compared either to NCHS reference data or to upper SES Guatemalan children. Stature (or length) and head circumference deviate more from reference data than do triceps or upper arm muscle circumference. Greater deviations are found in the linear dimensions of males than of females. These children are the smallest yet described from Guatemala City, though they are slightly larger than available rural samples. This suggests a continuum of environmental effects acting upon the growth of children of differing socioeconomic levels.  相似文献

Predator-mediated habitat use: some consequences for species interactions   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Synopsis Behavioral responses to predators can have a major impact on a fishes' diet and habitat choice. Studies with the bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, demonstrate that bluegills undergo pronounced shifts in diet and habitat use as they grow in response to changes in their vulnerability to predators. Other species of fish exhibit similar habitat shifts with body size, presumably also in response to changing predation risks and/or foraging gains. An important but little appreciated consequence of this type of predator-mediated habitat use is that predation risk, by structuring size and/or age-specific resource use, may also indirectly affect species interactions. This paper discusses some of the ways in which behavioral responses to predators may affect intra- and interspecific competition in fish. Observational and experimental studies with sunfish (Centrarchidae) provide most of the examples. These studies suggest that the nonlethal effects of predators may be as important as the actual killing of prey.  相似文献

Replidated experiments indicate an association between thermal tolerance of juvenile bluegill sunfish and adaptive pigmentation to background color. Bluegills exposed to black backgrounds were able to survive higher temperatures longer than those exposed to blond backgrounds, when water temperatures were raised at a rate of 0.1°C/h from 24 to 36°C. Plausible explanations are considered which involve heat radiation effectiveness (by the fish) related to the black body concept, and stress associated with adaptive pigmentation.  相似文献

  1. In order to get the knowledge on the age composition of “isaza” population in Lake Biwa and the effect of population density on growth, monthly distribution of mean body length and mean body weight has been analyzed on the basis of monthly haul by “isazabiki” trawl during 1949 to 1953 and also 1960 to 1965.
  2. There is no apparent sex difference in the growth in the first and second years of life.
  3. “Isaza” population is composed of two age groups, age 0 and 1 groups (1+fish), the latter occupying by far the greater part in commercial catch.
  4. During the growth season fishes of both ages feed mainly on zooplankton, though in winter frequently take chironomid larvae, gammaridae and others in volume.
  5. The growth season falls in the period from April to October in both age groups.
  6. A considerable yearly variation occurring in growth is in close connection with the fluctuation of population density of all ages.
  7. The influence affected by the density of age 1 group is larger than that by age 0 group.

Feeding of an "obligate" plant-parasitic nematode (nonfungal feeder), Pratylenchus scribneri, in the absence of plant tissue was demonstrated in an artificial system consisting of liquid media and indicator dyes including amaranth and various nontoxic food colors. Among the compounds tested, sucrose, dextrose, Gamborg''s B5 medium, and DL-methionine stimulated a small percentage of feeding (12-36%). A high percentage of feeding (90-100%) occurred in a filtrate from excised corn roots cultured in Gamborg''s B5 medium. This feeding system has the potential to develop an artificial medium for plant-parasitic nematodes and to screen novel nematicides that are stomach poisons.  相似文献

The energetic adaptations of non-breeding Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus) to temperature and fasting were studied during the birds' autumnal irruptions in western Finland. Allometric analysis (including literature data and two larger owl species measured in this study) indicates that the basal metabolic rate of owls is below the mean level of non-passerine birds. However, the basal metabolic rate of the 130-g Tengmalm's owl (1.13 W) is higher than in other owls of similar size. This is probably related to its northern distribution and nomadic life history. Relative to its size, Tengmalm's owl has excellent cold resistance due to effective insulation (lower critical temperature +10°C, minimum conductance 0.19 mW·cm-2·°C-1). Radiotelemetric measurements of body temperature showed that the level of body temperature is lower than for birds in general (39.4°C at zero activity) and that the amplitude of the diurnal cycle is also low (0.2–0.6°C). In contrast to many other small birds, Tengmalm's owls do not enter hypothermia during a 5-day fast at thermoneutrality or in cold. Moreover, while the metabolic rate per bird shows the expected mass-dependent decrease, the mass-specific rate decreases only slightly during the fast. In line with this, there was no decrease in the plasma triiodothyronine concentration during the fast in the owl, whereas a dramtic drop was observed in the pigeon and Japanese quail that were used as a reference. Despite this, the owl has an excellent capacity for fasting because of its ability to accumulate extensive fat depots and its low overall metabolic rate. Fasting reduced evaporative water loss to 50% of that in the fed state. Calculations show that the oxygen consumption observed in fasting birds would involve a production of metabolic water barely sufficient to compensate for evaporative water loss. The threat of dehydration may thus set a limit to the decrease in metabolic rate in fasting owls (owls rely totally on water either ingested with food or produced metabolically). We conclude that the metabolic strategy in Tengmalm's owl is largely dictated by an evolutionary pressure for fasting endurance. With the restrictions set by small body size and water economy, this bird has apparently taken these adaptations to an extreme. The constraints that preclude hypothermia, which could increase the capacity for fasting even more, remain unknown.Abbreviations BM body mass - BMR basal metabolic rate - EWL vaporative water loss - MR metabolic rate - T3 triiodothyronine - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - VO2 oxygen consumption  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise plus voluntary food restriction on the body composition, resting metabolic rate (RMR) and aerobic fitness of mildly obese middle-aged women. The subjects were randomly assigned to exercise/diet (n = 17) or control (n = 15) groups. The exercise/diet group participated in an aerobic training programme, 45–60 min · day –1 at 50%–60% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), 3–4 days · week–1, and also adopted a self-regulated energy deficit relative to predicted energy requirements (–1.05 MJ · day –1 to –1.14 MJ · day –1 ). After the regimen had been followed for 12 weeks, the body mass of the subjects had decreased by an average of 4.5 kg, due mainly to fat loss, with little change of fat free mass (m ff). The absolute RMR did not change, but the experimental group showed significant increases in the RMR per unit of body mass (10%) and the RMR per unit of m ff (4%). The increase in RMR/m ff was not correlated with any increase in VO2max/m ff. The resting heat production per unit of essential body mass increased by an average of 21%, but the resting heat production rate per unit of fat tissue mass remained unchanged. We concluded that aerobic exercise enhances the effect of moderate dietary restriction by augmenting the metabolic activity of lean tissue.  相似文献
