When varanid lizards, Varanus niloticus, were allowed to select their preferred body temperature (c. 34°C) they exhibited swifter growth, larger food intake and superior efficiency of conversion when compared with animals restricted to a maximum body temperature of 24°C. At the higher temperature the animals also exhibited a higher metabolic rate and increased thyroid activity, while those at the lower temperature lostproportionately more energy via respiration. Synopsis Oxygen uptake (Vo2) was measured in carp of approximately 40 cm length swimming at controlled variable oxygen tensions (Po2). At Po2> 120 mm Hg Vo2 increased with an increase in swimming speed from 5.6 to 11.3 cm · sec–1. Extrapolation of Vo2 to zero activity at Po2 = 140 mm Hg revealed a standard O2 uptake of 36.7 ml O2 · kg–1 · h–1 at 20° C. At the lowest swimming speed (5.6 cm · s–1) the oxygen uptake increased when the water Po2 was reduced. A near doubling in Vo2 was seen at Po2 = 70 mm Hg compared to 140 mm Hg. At higher swimming speeds in hypoxic water Vo2 decreased relative to the values at low swimming speeds. As a result the slope of the lines expressing log Vo2 as a function of swimming speed decreased from positive to negative values with decreasing Po2 of the water. pH of blood from the caudal vein drawn before and at termination of swimming at Po2 = 70 mm Hg and 100 mm Hg did not show any decrease in relation to rest values at Po2 = 140 mm Hg. In the Markham Valley of Papua New Guinea, multivariate graphical displays of serological, anthropometric, and dermatoglyphic population structures are compared pursuant to the hypothesis that fingerprints have a slower velocity of evolutionary change and, therefore, are preferable biological markers for prehistorical reconstructions. Samples from nine villages, which represent three geographical and linguistic populations, are plotted in two dimensions using appropriate multivariate techniques for maximally portraying between sample variability. Both the serological and morphometric displays are found lacking in close clusters, which demonstrates a lack of congruence with the shared languages and, presumably, the ethnohistorical origins of the three populations. These discrepancies between biology and prehistory appear to reflect recent environmental and stochastic perturbations. On the other hand, fingerprint displays conform closely to language affiliations, relatively undisturbed by environmental variation and genetic drift. The relative congruence between ethnohistorical affiliation and fingerprint diversity is further corroborated by comparing the three measures of population structure with geographical distances, using partial rank correlations. In terms of explained variance, the level of association with fingerprints is more than twice than with anthropometry, and 13 times greater than with serology. Whereas metric and serological data provide distorted portrayals of known biohistorical relationships among the study populations, fingerprint data mirror these relationships. The theoretical foundations and consequences of this observation are discussed with respect to the broader question of polygenic versus monogenic biological markers. 相似文献
The apparent penetration activity of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae was quantified by means of an in vitro assay with a radioactively labeled Type I collagen gel. Both live cercariae and cercarial preacetabular gland secretions degraded the collagen. The addition of skin lipid or linoleic acid to the gel surface enhanced the degradation by live cercariae. 相似文献
Proteins of erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium falciparum were biosynthetically labeled at different times during the first cycle of in vitro synchronous cultivation after collection from patients in the Madang region of Papua New Guinea. Proteins were immunoprecipitated with a pool of hyperimmune serum collected in the region then analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis. Antigens were recognized in all life cycle stages but the majority of antigens, particularly those of high molecular weight, were present in the mature forms of the parasite. 相似文献
Immediate hypersensitivity reactions in schistosoma japonicum infections were examined in both man and experimental animals. In man higher reaction to soluble egg antigen than to adult worm antigen was detected by the use of the radioallergosorbent test (RAST). Blood-collecting filter paper can be used in RAST for seroepidemiological study in place of a skin test. Reaginic antibody formation against egg antigen was detected at the approximate time of egg deposition in strains of mice, Mongolian gerbils, cotton rats, and laboratory rats by the use of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis or Prausnitz-Küstner-type skin tests. At the same time circumoval precipitin tests were positive. Results with athymic nude mice suggest that these reactions are T-cell dependent. No detectable reagin synthesis against adult worm antigen was found in the animals so far examined, confirming stronger allergenic reaction to egg antigen than to that of adult worms in S. japonicum infections in man and animals. 相似文献
Summary The research presented here was designed to investigate the mode of inheritance of fat and lean tissue deposition, and the relationship between them and body weight in Japanese quail. Heterotic effects were found for weight, size, and number of adipocytes in the abdominal fat depots, weight of the sartorial fat depot and percentage carcass fat with means for the hybrids being lower than those for the parental lines. General inferences concerning the importance of nonadditive genetic variation for lean and body weight were precluded due to inconsistencies observed among mating combinations. Thus, although heterosis and recombination effects were general for characteristics associated with fat deposition, the situation for body weight and lean was unique to the populations involved. It may be hypothesized that heterosis in the efficiency of feed utilization is reflected by the heterosis for fat deposition which explains why hybrids utilize feed better than their parental lines. 相似文献
The activities of tyrosine hydroxylase, aromatic L-aminoacid decarboxylase, monoamine oxidase, and catechol-O-methyltransferase were measured in microvessel (capillaries and venules), parenchymal arterioles, and pial vessels from rat brains, and the decarboxylase activity was compared in brain microvessels from rabbit, cat, dog, pig, cow, baboon, and man. Cranial sympathectomy was performed to estimate the neuronal contribution to the enzyme activities. All vascular regions had substantial activities of the various enzymes studied. The activity of aromatic L-aminoacid decarboxylase in cerebral microvessels was high in rat, dog, pig, cow, and man; intermediate in rabbit and cat; and low in baboon. In addition to this enzyme, cerebral microvessels also contained tyrosine hydroxylase and monoamine oxidase. Aromatic aminoacid decarboxylase and monoamine oxidase serve an enzymatic barrier function at the microvascular level, whereas the main function of tyrosine hydroxylase is probably to synthesize monoamines within nerve terminals that remain in close association with microvessels under the conditions used for preparation of the microvascular fraction. In larger intracerebral and pial vessels monoamine oxidase was present both in the wall itself and in perivascular sympathetic nerves; the remaining two enzymes had a primarily neuronal localization.
