Three years of pollen trapping data from Barro Colorado Island, Panama, are compared with local vegetation inventories. Two hypotheses relating pollen representation to ‘messy’ pollination and flower form are tested. Dioecious taxa were found to be over‐represented in pollen spectra compared with their occurrence in local forests. Similarly, anemophilous and ‘messy’ pollination types were found to be over‐represented. While anemophilous taxa were the best dispersed pollen types, zoophilous taxa were also well‐represented in dispersal classes of 20–40 m and > 40 m. Thus pollen arriving to lake sediments is most likely to be from anemophilous species or those zoophilous species exhibiting ‘messy’ pollination syndromes. Pollination mechanisms will predictably bias the fossil record against certain flower morphologies. These data are of significance to those using the fossil pollen record to reconstruct the timing and sequence of angiosperm evolution. These data help prioritize plants to be included in modern pollen reference collections and to focus the search for ‘unknown’ types on most‐likely candidate families.  相似文献

Previous work documented seasonal field response dynamics of Euschistus conspersus Uhler (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) to Euschistus spp. pheromone [methyl (2E,4Z)‐decadienoate]‐baited traps in California processing tomatoes, Lycopersicon esculentum (Miller) (Solanaceae). A laboratory phenology model has been reported for E. conspersus egg incubation to adult emergence. In the present work, reproductive and thoracic dissections were performed on female E. conspersus collected year‐round from seasonal habitats in California's Central Valley. We used these dissection data to establish relationships between the morphology of E. conspersus and time of year, habitat, sample recovery method, and female attraction to pheromone traps in commercial tomato fields. All ovariole categories, sexually immature through postreproductive, were recorded for females collected from tomatoes by plant‐beating sample throughout the growing season. Conversely, pheromone trap captures in tomatoes over the same period revealed that females entering the traps were exclusively reproductively active with matured eggs. We conclude that early season female‐biased E. conspersus pheromone trap catch can be used to establish a ‘biofix’ from which to accumulate degree days and forecast nymphal development in the field. Focusing control efforts on the more susceptible nymph stages may improve efficacy of reduced‐risk insecticides such as the neonicotinoids. Thoracic dissection results, with no significant difference in flight muscle size or color by ovariole condition, failed to support our hypothesis of a life history trade‐off between female reproductive activity and flight capability to explain a decline in female pheromone trap response during the mid‐summer tomato‐fruiting stages. The adaptive value of the observed retention of E. conspersus flight capability over the calendar year, and across reproductive stages, is discussed.  相似文献

Processing of the 3′ end of mRNA precursors depends on several proteins. The multisubunit cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF) is required for cleavage of the mRNA precursor as well as polyadenylation. CPSF interacts with the cleavage stimulatory factor complex (CstF), and this interaction increases the specificity of binding. Following cleavage downstream of the AAUAAA site, CPSF and poly(A) polymerase (PAP) are required for efficient polyadenylation. Recently, it has been shown that 160-kDa subunit of CPSF interacts directly with the 77-kDa subunit of CstF, which is homologous to the product encoded by the Drosophila gene su(f), and with PAP. Here we report the cloning and characterization of a Drosophila homologue of CPSF-160. The 1329-amino acid dCPSF protein exhibits about 45% and 20% sequence identity, respectively, to its mammalian and yeast counterparts over its entire length. We show that the CPSF homologue is expressed throughout development and that CPSF is essential for viability. Mutations in the cpsf gene did not alter the phenotype of homozygous su(f) mutations, suggesting that, for most genes, processing of 3′ termini is not sensitive to small changes in cpsf and su(f) dosage. The antiobiotics, diumycin, amphomycin, bacitracin, and showdomycin have been shown previously to block the synthesis of GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol and GlcNAc-GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol. In view of inconsistencies in the literature concerning the sites of inhibition, we have reinvestigated the influence of these drugs on the formation of these early intermediates of the dolichol pathway. Unexpectedly, when the individual products of the reactions were examined, instead of inhibition, showdomycin and bacitracin were found to stimulate the formation of GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol, and diumycin stimulated at low concentrations. Three derivatives of showdomycin were examined with similar results, showing stimulations of GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol formation of up to two-fold over controls. Amphomycin specifically inhibited GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol formation, an effect that was reversed by a high concentration of dolichyl phosphate. In contrast, with the exception of amphomycin, each compound directly inhibited the formation of GlcNAc-GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol. Using chemically synthesized GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol as substrate, the kinetics of inhibition of GlcNAc-GlcNAc-P-P-dolichol formation by showdomycin, bacitracin and diumycin was examined. The apparent Ki values calculated from these studies indicated that showdomycin was the most active inhibitor. These findings provide a new understanding of the action of these compounds on the GlcNAc-transferases of the dolichol pathway. © 1998 Rapid Science Ltd  相似文献

Fatty acid biosynthesis by isolated plastids has been examined in relation to chloroplast development and differentiation in leaves of maize plants grown in light for 7 days. Biosynthesis of fatty acids from acetate by proplastids prepared from the basal regions of the leaf was low and mainly palmitate was synthesized. The greatly increased utilization of acetate for fatty acid biosynthesis as the plastids increased in size was due to an increased synthesis of oleate. The maximum synthesis of total fatty acids and monoenoic fatty acids was obtained in chloroplasts prepared from leaf tissue 6–8 cm from the base of the plant where granal formation was most active. Fully-developed chloroplasts prepared from distal regions of the leaf were less active in fatty acid biosynthesis. Maize chloroplasts failed to synthesize fatty acids when isolated by methods commonly used to prepare active spinach chloroplasts. The method of isolation which included a density gradient gave a high proportion of Class I chloroplasts from maize leaves and incorporated up to about 10% of the acetate used. Biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, especially with chloroplasts prepared from the most mature tissue, was increased by the addition of both mitochondrial and microsomal fractions. Increases in polyunsaturated fatty acids were also obtained but the proportions in the newly-synthesized fatty acids were well below the endogenous levels. Monoenoic synthesis was greatly stimulated by increasing the pH in the range 7·0–8·0 and also the highest proportions of unsaturated fatty acids were obtained at short incubation times.  相似文献

Predicting species'' fates following the introduction of a novel pathogen is a significant and growing problem in conservation. Comparing disease dynamics between introduced and endemic regions can offer insight into which naive hosts will persist or go extinct, with disease acting as a filter on host communities. We examined four hypothesized mechanisms for host–pathogen persistence by comparing host infection patterns and environmental reservoirs for Pseudogymnoascus destructans (the causative agent of white-nose syndrome) in Asia, an endemic region, and North America, where the pathogen has recently invaded. Although colony sizes of bats and hibernacula temperatures were very similar, both infection prevalence and fungal loads were much lower on bats and in the environment in Asia than North America. These results indicate that transmission intensity and pathogen growth are lower in Asia, likely due to higher host resistance to pathogen growth in this endemic region, and not due to host tolerance, lower transmission due to smaller populations, or lower environmentally driven pathogen growth rate. Disease filtering also appears to be favouring initially resistant species in North America. More broadly, determining the mechanisms allowing species persistence in endemic regions can help identify species at greater risk of extinction in introduced regions, and determine the consequences for disease dynamics and host–pathogen coevolution.  相似文献

In this study, a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) that was isolated from a 9‐week‐old diseased pig on a farm in Japan with a high mortality rate during 2007–2008 was characterized. This unique isolate, designated as Jpn5‐37, did not have a high nucleotide identity in open reading frame 5 against any Japanese isolates. Among all available type 2 PRRSV complete genome sequences, Jpn5‐37 shared the highest nucleotide identity (93.6%) with virulent strain MN184A. The genomic characteristics of Jpn5‐37 were highly conserved with respect to the virulent MN184A, including a continuous eight amino acid deletion in the nonstructural protein 2 region. Moreover, virus distribution, viremia and the gross and microscopic characteristics of lesions were investigated in pigs 10 days post‐inoculation to elucidate the pathogenicity of the isolate. Intranasal inoculation was found to rapidly result in viremia and dissemination of the Jpn5‐37 isolate to several tissues in a similar manner to EDRD1; however, the amounts of Jpn5‐37 RNA in serum were significantly greater. Similarly, the quantities of Jpn5‐37 viral RNA in all organs tested tended to be higher than with EDRD1 infection. Mean rectal temperatures were significantly higher in the Jpn5‐37‐inoculated than in the control group at 4 and 6 days post infection (dpi) and in the EDRD1‐inoculated group at 6 and 8 dpi. These results suggest that the Jpn5‐37 strain replicates and is more efficiently distributed to the organs than is EDRD1 under the same conditions.  相似文献
