Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been suggested as a useful indicator of elevation stress and, hence, distribution limits in
plants. However, no plant studies have been carried out to test (i) whether FA shows a gradual increase towards the alpine
distribution limit and (ii) whether FA responds to elevation stress independent of other stressors which is necessary for
FA to be a useful indicator in this context. To test these two hypotheses, this 2-year field study investigated the dose–response
relationship between elevation stress and FA in mountain birch (Betula pubescens) under contrasting levels of insect attack in northern Norway. The results showed that FA increased linearly from sea level
towards the tree line in both years independent of insect attack, which had no observable effect on FA, i.e. insect attack
did not appear to disturb the FA-elevation relation. Thus, in mountain birch, FA appeared to be a reliable indicator of elevation

The ambermarked birch leafminer, Profenusa thomsoni Konow (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), was first discovered in Alaska in 1991 but was not correctly identified until 1996 when it invaded Anchorage and became a widespread and damaging pest to forest and urban birches. In 2003, the parasitoid wasp, Lathrolestes thomsoni Reshchikov (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), was selected as a candidate for a classical biological control program against P. thomsoni. Parasitized leafminer larvae were collected from the Northwest Territories and Alberta, Canada, where it was previously introduced and causing injury to Betula spp., and transferred to Alaska in soil as pre-pupae for emergence. From 2004 to 2008, 3636 adult L. thomsoni adults were released in birch stands in Alaska. Parasitoids were later recovered at all six release sites in Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. While percent leaves mined declined by 30–40% at parasitoid release sites over the period of this study, a similar decline was also observed at paired, non-release long-term monitoring sites. Ascodichaena rugosa Butin is a corkinhabiting fungus, found frequently on the bark of Fagus sylvatica L. The hyphae of the fungus are distributed solely in the phellem cells, stopping their growth in the last-formed cork cell layer. The cell to cell invasion is effected by penetration hyphae, causing no extensive dissolution of the cork wall. Electron microscopical observations revealed fine structural details of the fruit bodies and of the intracellular hyphae. Of special interest were the finger-like hyaline hyphae in the last-formed layer of cork cells, which are interpreted as haustoria on the basis of the fine structure both of hyphae and host cells. This situation is considered as reflecting a parasitic relationship of Ascodichaena to beech bark. The activity of the fungus led also to the increased production of cork cells, perhaps related to the nutrient supply of the fungus. 相似文献

We have shown earlier that Neem (Azadirachta indica) bark aqueous extract has potent antisecretory and antiulcer effects in animal models and has no significant adverse effect (Bandyopadhyay et al., Life Sciences, 71, 2845-2865, 2002). The objective of the present study was to investigate whether Neem bark extract had similar antisecretory and antiulcer effects in human subjects. For this purpose, a group of patients suffering from acid-related problems and gastroduodenal ulcers were orally treated with the aqueous extract of Neem bark. The lyophilised powder of the extract when administered for 10 days at the dose of 30 mg twice daily caused a significant (p < 0.002) decrease (77%) in gastric acid secretion. The volume of gastric secretion and its pepsin activity were also inhibited by 63% and 50%, respectively. Some important blood parameters for organ toxicity such as sugar, urea, creatinine, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, albumin, globulin, hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte sedimentation rate remained close to the control values. The bark extract when taken at the dose of 30-60 mg twice daily for 10 weeks almost completely healed the duodenal ulcers monitored by barium meal X-ray or by endoscopy. One case of esophageal ulcer (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and one case of gastric ulcer also healed completely when treated at the dose of 30 mg twice daily for 6 weeks. The levels of various blood parameters for organ toxicity after Neem treatment at the doses mentioned above remained more or less close to the normal values suggesting no significant adverse effects. Neem bark extract thus has therapeutic potential for controlling gastric hypersecretion and gastroesophageal and gastroduodenal ulcers. 相似文献
