Palm oil industry is one of the leading agricultural industries in Malaysia with average crude palm oil production of more than 13 million tonne per year. However, production of such huge amount of crude palm oil has consequently resulted to even larger amount of palm oil mill effluent (POME). POME is a highly polluting wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in which can caused severe pollution to the environment, typically pollution to water resources. On the other hand, POME was identified as a potential source to generate renewable bioenergies such as biomethane and biohydrogen through anaerobic digestion. In other words, a combination of wastewater treatment and renewable bioenergies production would be an added advantage to the palm oil industry. In line with the world's focus on sustainability concept, such strategy should be implemented immediately to ensure palm oil is produced in an environmental friendly and sustainable manner. This review aims to discuss various technologies to convert POME to biomethane and biohydrogen in a commercial scale. Furthermore, discussion on using POME to culture microalgae for biodiesel and bioethanol production was included in the present paper as a new remedy to utilize POME with a greater beneficial return.  相似文献

When Chlorella biomass was hydrolyzed in the presence of 2% HCl and 2.5% MgCl2, a sugar concentration of nearly 12%, and a sugar recovery of about 83% was obtained. Fermentation experiments demonstrated that glucose in the Chlorella biomass hydrolysates was converted into ethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae with a yield of 0.47 g g−1, which is 91% of the theoretical yield. This chemical hydrolysis approach is thus a novel route for the hydrolysis of biomass to generate fermentable sugars.  相似文献

The potential of a fungal pretreatment combined with a mild alkali treatment to replace or complement current physico-chemical methods for ethanol production from wheat straw has been investigated. Changes in substrate composition, secretion of ligninolytic enzymes, enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency and ethanol yield after 7, 14 and 21 days of solid-state fermentation were evaluated. Most fungi degraded lignin with variable selectivity degrees, although only eight of them improved sugar recovery compared to untreated samples. Glucose yield after 21 days of pretreatment with Poria subvermispora and Irpex lacteus reached 69% and 66% of cellulose available in the wheat straw, respectively, with an ethanol yield of 62% in both cases. Conversions from glucose to ethanol reached around 90%, showing that no inhibitors were generated during this pretreatment. No close correlations were found between ligninolytic enzymes production and sugar yields.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to research a bioprocess for bioethanol production from raw sweet potato by Saccharomyces cerevisiae at laboratory, pilot and industrial scales. The fermentation mode, inoculum size and pressure from different gases were determined in laboratory. The maximum ethanol concentration, average ethanol productivity rate and yield of ethanol after fermentation in laboratory scale (128.51 g/L, 4.76 g/L/h and 91.4%) were satisfactory with small decrease at pilot scale (109.06 g/L, 4.89 g/L/h and 91.24%) and industrial scale (97.94 g/L, 4.19 g/L/h and 91.27%). When scaled up, the viscosity caused resistance to fermentation parameters, 1.56 AUG/g (sweet potato mash) of xylanase decreased the viscosity from approximately 30000 to 500 cp. Overall, sweet potato is a attractive feedstock for be bioethanol production from both the economic standpoints and environmentally friendly.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of whole stillage from a dry-grind corn-based ethanol plant was evaluated by batch and continuous-flow digesters under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions. At whole corn stillage concentrations of 6348 to 50,786 mg total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD)/L, at standard temperature (0 °C) and pressure (1 atm), preliminary biochemical methane potential assays produced 88 ± 8 L (49 ± 5 L CH4) and 96 ± 19 L (65 ± 14 L CH4) biogas per L stillage from mesophilic and thermophilic digesters, respectively. Continuous-flow studies for the full-strength stillage (TCOD = 254 g/L) at organic loadings of 4.25, 6.30 and 9.05 g TCOD/L days indicated unstable performance for the thermophilic digester. Among the sludge retention times (SRTs) of 60, 45 and 30 days tested, the mesophilic digestion was successful only at 60 days-SRT which does not represent a practical operation time for a large scale bioethanol plant. Future laboratory studies will focus on different reactor configurations to reduce the SRT needed in the digesters.  相似文献

Bioethanol is one of the alternatives of the conventional fossil fuel. In present study, effect of different carbon sources on the production of cellulolytic enzyme (CMCase) from Trichoderma reesei at different temperatures, duration and pH were investigated and conditions were optimized. Acid treated Kans grass (Saccharum sponteneum) was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis to produce fermentable sugars which was then fermented to bioethanol using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The maximum CMCase production was found to be 1.46 U mL−1 at optimum condition (28 °C, pH 5 and cellulose as carbon source). The cellulases and xylanase activity were found to be 1.12 FPU g−1 and 6.63 U mL−1, respectively. Maximum total sugar was found to be 69.08 mg/g dry biomass with 20 FPU g−1 dry biomass of enzyme dosage under optimum condition. Similar results were obtained when it was treated with pure enzyme. Upon fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysate, the yield of ethanol was calculated to be 0.46 g g−1.  相似文献

Solid phase microbial fuel cells (SMFC; graphite electrodes; open-air cathode) were designed to evaluate the potential of bioelectricity production by stabilizing composite canteen based food waste. The performance was evaluated with three variable electrode-membrane assemblies. Experimental data depicted feasibility of bioelectricity generation from solid state fermentation of food waste. Distance between the electrodes and presence of proton exchange membrane (PEM) showed significant influence on the power yields. SMFC-B (anode placed 5 cm from cathode-PEM) depicted good power output (463 mV; 170.81 mW/m2) followed by SMFC-C (anode placed 5 cm from cathode; without PEM; 398 mV; 53.41 mW/m2). SMFC-A (PEM sandwiched between electrodes) recorded lowest performance (258 mV; 41.8 mW/m2). Sodium carbonate amendment documented marked improvement in power yields due to improvement in the system buffering capacity. SMFCs operation also documented good substrate degradation (COD, 76%) along with bio-ethanol production. The operation of SMFC mimicked solid-sate fermentation which might lead to sustainable solid waste management practices.  相似文献

A simple process (the direct-saccharification-of-culms (DiSC) process) to produce ethanol from rice straw culms, accumulating significant amounts of soft carbohydrates (SCs: glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch and β-1,3-1,4-glucan) was developed. This study focused on fully mature culms of cv. Leafstar, containing 69.2% (w/w of dried culms) hexoses from SCs and cellulose. Commercially-available wind-separation equipment successfully prepared a culm-rich fraction with a SC recovery of 83.1% (w/w) from rice straw flakes (54.1% of total weight of rice straw). The fraction was suspended in water (20%, w/w) for starch liquefaction, and the suspension was subjected to a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation with yeast, yielding 5.6% (w/v) ethanol (86% of the theoretical yield from whole hexoses in the fraction) after 24 h fermentation. Thus, the DiSC process produced highly-concentrated ethanol from rice straw in a one vat process without any harsh thermo-chemical pretreatments.  相似文献

A thermotolerant Kluyveromyces marxianus mutant was developed by exposing yeast cultures repeatedly to 48 °C incubation temperature, and the strain was characterized with a significantly increased trehalose content. Unexpectedly, the strain was sensitive to alcohol, osmotic and oxidative stress, which correlated with the increases in the trehalose concentrations. Intracellular glutathione levels declined in both wild-type and mutant cells when exposed to elevating incubation temperatures. Finally, we reached the surprising conclusion that neither trehalose nor glutathione metabolisms should be aimed at in future strain development programs with K. marxianus.  相似文献
