The purpose of this paper is to take an entirely geometrical path to determine the evolutionary properties of ecological systems subject to trade-offs. In particular we classify evolutionary singularities in a geometrical fashion. To achieve this, we study trade-off and invasion plots (TIPs) which show graphically the outcome of evolution from the relationship between three curves. The first invasion boundary (curve) has one strain as resident and the other strain as putative invader and the second has the roles of the strains reversed. The parameter values for one strain are used as the origin with those of the second strain varying. The third curve represents the trade-off. All three curves pass through the origin or tip of the TIP. We show that at this point the invasion boundaries are tangential. At a singular TIP, in which the origin is an evolutionary singularity, the invasion boundaries and trade-off curve are all tangential. The curvature of the trade-off curve determines the region in which it enters the singular TIP. Each of these regions has particular evolutionary properties (EUS, CS, SPR and MI). Thus we determine by direct geometric argument conditions for each of these properties in terms of the relative curvatures of the trade-off curve and invasion boundaries. We show that these conditions are equivalent to the standard partial derivative conditions of adaptive dynamics. The significance of our results is that we can determine whether the singular strategy is an attractor, branching point, repellor, etc. simply by observing in which region the trade-off curve enters the singular TIP. In particular we find that, if and only if the TIP has a region of mutual invadability, is it possible for the singular strategy to be a branching point. Following the expression of the behavioral sensitization by repeated administration of methamphetamine (METH) (1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.), once per day for five consecutive days), male ICR mice were treated with clorgyline (1 mg/kg, subcutaneous, once per day for five consecutive days), a monoamine oxidase-A inhibitor. Two hours after the final treatment with clorgyline, the mice were challenged with METH (1 mg/kg, i.p.) and locomotor activity was measured for 1 h. The mice treated with clorgyline showed a significant decrease in both vertical locomotion and horizontal rearing, compared with those treated with saline. Clorgyline treatment altered the effect of single METH challenges on apparent dopamine turnover in the cerebral cortex of the mice sensitized to METH. These results suggested a possible association of the inhibition by clorgyline of METH-induced behavioral sensitization with the alteration of dopamine turnover in the cerebral cortex of the mouse. 相似文献

We investigated how infection by the mermithid nematode Gasteromermis sp. affected predation on its nymphal mayfly host, Baetisbicaudatus, by two invertebrate predators – the stonefly nymphs of Kogotusmodestus and the caddisfly larvae of Rhyacophilahyalinata. Predation trials and behavioral observations were conducted in stream-side, flow-through experimental chambers. When parasitized
and unparasitized prey were offered in equal numbers, K. modestus consumed significantly more parasitized than unparasitized nymphs. R. hyalinata consumed equal numbers of both prey types. Behavioral observations of foraging K.␣modestus on parasitized and unparasitized prey suggested that the increased consumption of parasitized nymphs was due to differences
in the behavior of infected mayflies in response to the predator. Specifically, parasitized nymphs drifted less often to escape
an approaching predator (non-contact encounters) compared to unparasitized nymphs, which increased the number of contact encounters
and attacks that occurred between K.␣modestus and parasitized prey. Because all hosts are castrated, these behavioral alterations affect only the fitness of the parasite,
which is killed along with its host by invertebrate predation. We present a number of hypotheses to explain why the parasite
causes increased predation on its host. These include the large size of the parasite affecting the sensory abilities of the
host, the larger energetic costs of escape behavior for parasitized individuals, and natural selection from fish predation
against drifting behavior by parasitized individuals.

Leaf - feeding beetles , Altica carduorum, from a population in NW China have been identified as candidate agents for biocontrol of Canada thistle , Cirsium arvense. This paper assesses the potential of beetles from this population to establish on the Canadian prairies . A phenological model is applied to determine where sufficient heat accumulates to allow completion of at least one generation per year . The model was applied both with and without a submodel of adult thermoregulation . The model was driven using meteorological data from a grid covering the agricultural region of the Canadian prairies , i . e . ca . 670 000 km 2 , at a resolution of (50 50) km . In each grid square , the percentage of the years 1960 - 89 for which the model indicated that at least one generation could have been completed was calculated; these proportions were categorized (0 - 80%; 80 - 99% and 100%) and mapped . Maps of C. arvense density over the simulation region were also produced , and compared to the maps of predicted beetle distribution . The model suggests that A. carduorum could establish over much of the prairies . Without thermoregulation , the predicted range (i . e . the area in which one generation was completed in every year) is restricted to the warmer parts of the prairies , where C. arvense is generally sparse . Inclusion of thermoregulation almost doubled the predicted range to cover most of the range of C. arvense on the Canadian prairies , missing only the cooler peripheral areas . These results suggest that this strain of A. carduorum has potential to overlap the range of C. arvense on the Canadian prairies , and so has potential to control this weed . 相似文献

We have tested the effect of a known insect neuromodulator, octopamine, on flight initiation in the cockroach. Using minimally dissected animals, we found that octopamine lowered the threshold for windevoked initiation of flight when applied to either of two major synaptic sites in the flight circuitry: 1) the last abdominal ganglion, where wind-sensitive neurons from the cerci excite dorsal giant interneurons, or 2) the metathoracic ganglion, where the dorsal giant interneurons activate interneurons and motoneurons which are involved in producing the rhythmic flight motor pattern in the flight muscles (Fig. 2).Correlated with this change in flight initiation threshold, we found that octopamine applied to the last abdominal ganglion increased the number of action potentials produced by individual dorsal giant interneurons when recruiting the cereal wind-sensitive neurons with wind puffs (Figs. 3, 4, 5) or with extracellular stimulation of their axons (Fig. 6). Octopamine increases the excitability of the giant interneurons (Figs. 7, 8). Also, when we stimulated individual dorsal giant interneurons intracellularly, the number of action potentials needed to initiate flight was reduced when octopamine was applied to the metathoracic ganglion (Fig. 9).Abbreviations

Daily variation in the body temperature of the green iguana (Iguana iguana) was studied by telemetry in laboratory photo-thermal enclosures under a 12Light12Dark (LD) photoperiod. The lizards showed robust daily rhythms of thermoregulation maintaining their body temperatures (Tb) at higher levels during the day than during the night. Some animals maintained rhythmicity when kept in constant darkness. On lightdark cycles parietalectomy produced only a transient increase of median Tb in the first or second night following the operation. Pinealectomized lizards on the other hand maintained their body temperatures at significantly lower levels during the day and at significantly higher levels during the night than did sham-operated or intact lizards. This effect was apparently permanent, since one month after pinealectomy lizards still displayed the altered pattern. Plasma melatonin levels in intact animals were high during the night and low during the day and were unaffected by parietalectomy. Pinealectomized lizards showed low levels of plasma melatonin during both the day and the night. A daily intraperitoneal injection of melatonin in pinealectomized animals given a few minutes after the light to dark transition decreased the body temperatures selected by the lizards during the night and increased the body temperatures selected during the following day. Control injections of saline solution had no effect. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the role of the pineal complex and melatonin in the mediation of thermoregulatory behavior.Abbreviations

In the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), two sympatric strains have been recognized that have been termed corn strain (C) and rice strain (R), referring to their most common host plants. Both strains are reproductively isolated via a distinct prezygotic barrier as well as via an intriguing postzygotic phenomenon: when R females have mated with C males, the resulting RC hybrid females exhibit dramatically reduced fertility independent of their mating partner. Here, we demonstrate that the reduced fertility is caused by the fact that these females refrain from mating, that is, females are behaviorally sterile. We identified a Z‐chromosomally linked sterility locus that is most likely incompatible with yet to be identified autosomal (or cytoplasmic) factors, leading to the observed sexual abstinence. Within‐chromosome mapping revealed the sterility locus to be located in an area of strongly reduced interstrain recombination. 相似文献

An analysis of endemicity (NDM/VNDM) based on 6541 records from 791 species of arthropods was conducted aiming to delimitate areas of endemism (AEs) in the Atlantic Forest (Brazil). Nine analyses were run employing different analytical parameters of grid size and data extrapolation of species distribution, and their effects on the results were observed. The present study is the first to employ an analysis of sensitivity with UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmatic mean) as a metaconsensus criterion to compare and select AEs resulting from analyses of endemicity with different analytical parameters. In total, 724 AEs grouped into 313 consensus areas were identified. With the metaconsensus criterion, 29 groups of areas were defined, most of them coinciding with the areas obtained in other studies, which confirms that the metaconsus criterion is a clear and objective method for comparing and selecting AEs. The results of the present imply that species of arthorpods respond differently to events and, moreover, that the geographical/climate features usually employed to explain distributional patterns of other taxa do not uniformly affect all species included in the study. The AEs identified in the present study represent a major advance in the search for quantitative distribution patterns in the Atlantic Rainforest, contributing to studies of historical biogeography and other approaches related to the conservation. 相似文献

Statistical models support medical research by facilitating individualized outcome prognostication conditional on independent variables or by estimating effects of risk factors adjusted for covariates. Theory of statistical models is well‐established if the set of independent variables to consider is fixed and small. Hence, we can assume that effect estimates are unbiased and the usual methods for confidence interval estimation are valid. In routine work, however, it is not known a priori which covariates should be included in a model, and often we are confronted with the number of candidate variables in the range 10–30. This number is often too large to be considered in a statistical model. We provide an overview of various available variable selection methods that are based on significance or information criteria, penalized likelihood, the change‐in‐estimate criterion, background knowledge, or combinations thereof. These methods were usually developed in the context of a linear regression model and then transferred to more generalized linear models or models for censored survival data. Variable selection, in particular if used in explanatory modeling where effect estimates are of central interest, can compromise stability of a final model, unbiasedness of regression coefficients, and validity of p‐values or confidence intervals. Therefore, we give pragmatic recommendations for the practicing statistician on application of variable selection methods in general (low‐dimensional) modeling problems and on performing stability investigations and inference. We also propose some quantities based on resampling the entire variable selection process to be routinely reported by software packages offering automated variable selection algorithms. 相似文献

Abstract: Goldfish were trained for 4 h to swim with an attached polystyrene foam float and tested for retention 3 days later. Intracerebroventricular injection of anti-ependymin antisera was shown to prevent long-term memory formation of this vestibulomotor learning task, as reported previously. In further experiments, fish were killed 4–14 h after the start of training. The brains were dissected, incubated in an isoosmolar solution for collection of proteins of the brain extracellular fluid (ECF), homogenized, and fractionated by differential centrifugation. The ECF, a supernatant fraction enriched in cytoplasmic constituents (S3), and various par-ticulate subcellular fractions were analyzed for their epen-dymin contents by radioimmunoassay. No statistically significant changes that might be induced by the learning were revealed in any of the participate fractions. Steady-state concentrations of ependymins in the cytoplasm, however, increased temporarily by 39% in fish that had mastered the training task as compared with nonlearning animals (passive and active controls). In the ECF, the specific concentration of ependymins first decreased to 88% of control levels (4–5 h after the start of training), but later on, it increased to 138% (8–14 h). Apparently, ependymins present in the ECF are used during biochemical reactions of memory consolidation. The resulting decrease in extracellular epen-dymin concentrations might trigger their resynthesis in the cytoplasm and lead to an increased release of these glyco-proteins into the ECF. 相似文献
