The rubber hand illusion (RHI) is a popular experimental paradigm. Participants view touch on an artificial rubber hand while the participants'' own hidden hand is touched. If the viewed and felt touches are given at the same time then this is sufficient to induce the compelling experience that the rubber hand is one''s own hand. The RHI can be used to investigate exactly how the brain constructs distinct body representations for one''s own body. Such representations are crucial for successful interactions with the external world. To obtain a subjective measure of the RHI, researchers typically ask participants to rate statements such as "I felt as if the rubber hand were my hand". Here we demonstrate how the crossmodal congruency task can be used to obtain an objective behavioral measure within this paradigm.The variant of the crossmodal congruency task we employ involves the presentation of tactile targets and visual distractors. Targets and distractors are spatially congruent (i.e. same finger) on some trials and incongruent (i.e. different finger) on others. The difference in performance between incongruent and congruent trials - the crossmodal congruency effect (CCE) - indexes multisensory interactions. Importantly, the CCE is modulated both by viewing a hand as well as the synchrony of viewed and felt touch which are both crucial factors for the RHI.The use of the crossmodal congruency task within the RHI paradigm has several advantages. It is a simple behavioral measure which can be repeated many times and which can be obtained during the illusion while participants view the artificial hand. Furthermore, this measure is not susceptible to observer and experimenter biases. The combination of the RHI paradigm with the crossmodal congruency task allows in particular for the investigation of multisensory processes which are critical for modulations of body representations as in the RHI. 相似文献

Phenotypic integration and plasticity are central to our understanding of how complex phenotypic traits evolve. Evolutionary change in complex quantitative traits can be predicted using the multivariate breeders’ equation, but such predictions are only accurate if the matrices involved are stable over evolutionary time. Recent study, however, suggests that these matrices are temporally plastic, spatially variable and themselves evolvable. The data available on phenotypic variance‐covariance matrix ( P ) stability are sparse, and largely focused on morphological traits. Here, we compared P for the structure of the complex sexual advertisement call of six divergent allopatric populations of the Australian black field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus. We measured a subset of calls from wild‐caught crickets from each of the populations and then a second subset after rearing crickets under common‐garden conditions for three generations. In a second experiment, crickets from each population were reared in the laboratory on high‐ and low‐nutrient diets and their calls recorded. In both experiments, we estimated P for call traits and used multiple methods to compare them statistically (Flury hierarchy, geometric subspace comparisons and random skewers). Despite considerable variation in means and variances of individual call traits, the structure of P was largely conserved among populations, across generations and between our rearing diets. Our finding that P remains largely stable, among populations and between environmental conditions, suggests that selection has preserved the structure of call traits in order that they can function as an integrated unit. 相似文献

为了研究人肺腺癌细胞A 5 49和正常细胞HBE的蛋白质组差异 ,用固相pH梯度双向凝胶电泳分离人肺腺癌细胞系A 5 49和正常细胞HBE的总蛋白质 ,银染显色 ,PDQuest 2 DE软件分析 ,对部分差异蛋白质点进行基质辅助激光解吸电离飞行时间质谱 (MALDI TOF MS)测定其胶内酶解后的肽质指纹图谱 ,用PeptIdent软件查询SWISS PROT数据库。结果获得了分辨率和重复性均较好的双向电泳银染图谱 ,图象分析探测到A 5 492 DE图谱的平均蛋白质点数为 (890± 38)个 ,HBE的平均蛋白质点数为 (75 7± 2 7)个 ,不同胶间蛋白质点的位置偏差在IEF方向为 (2 .85± 0 .48)mm ,在SDS PAGE方向为 (2 .6 9± 0 .37)mm。差异表达分析发现A 5 49和HBE图谱有5 35个蛋白质点相互匹配 ,其中A 5 49有 35 5个未被匹配 ,HBE中有 2 2 2个未被匹配 ;对A 5 49和HBE中的 18个差异蛋白质点分别进行肽质指纹分析 ,经数据库查询 ,初步鉴定为一些与物质代谢、细胞因子、信号转导有关的蛋白质。提示人肺腺癌细胞A 5 49和正常细胞HBE的蛋白质组具有差异 ,这种蛋白质组的差异分析有助于进一步研究肺腺癌的相关蛋白质及分子标记物 相似文献

Secondary structure-based profiles: use of structure-conserving scoring tables in searching protein sequence databases for structural similarities 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The profile method, for detecting distantly related proteins by sequence comparison, has been extended to incorporate secondary structure information from known X-ray structures. The sequence of a known structure is aligned to sequences of other members of a given folding class. From the known structure, the secondary structure (alpha-helix, beta-strand or "other") is assigned to each position of the aligned sequences. As in the standard profile method, a position-dependent scoring table, termed a profile, is calculated from the aligned sequences. However, rather than using the standard Dayhoff mutation table in calculating the profile, we use distinct amino acid mutation tables for residues in alpha-helices, beta-strands or other secondary structures to calculate the profile. In addition, we also distinguish between internal and external residues. With this new secondary structure-based profile method, we created a profile for eight-stranded, antiparallel beta barrels of the insecticyanin folding class. It is based on the sequences of retinol-binding protein, insecticyanin and beta-lactoglobulin. Scanning the sequence database with this profile, it was possible to detect the sequence of avidin. The structure of streptavidin is known, and it appears to be distantly related to the antiparallel beta barrels. Also detected is the sequence of complement component C8, which we therefore predict to be a member of this folding class. 相似文献

Synopsis Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine changes in behavior of red hake,Urophycis chuss, under decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO). Since the ecological requirements of this species change with age, responses were measured for three different groups: (1) age 0+, = 89 mm total length (TL); (2) age 1+, = 238 mm TL; and (3) age 2–3+, = 397 mm TL. As DO decreased from 8–10 mg l-1 to < 0.5 mg l-1, changes were evident in active time, water column activity, range of horizontal movement, food searching, and agonistic behavior. Age 0+ fish were most sensitive, moving up into the water column and swimming continuously as DO levels fell below 4.2 mg l-1. Age 2–3+ fish were the least responsive, remaining on the substrate and increasing only their range of movement at concentrations below 3 mg l-1. Responses of age 1 + fish were variable, possibly reflecting a transition stage between the younger and older fish. Striatal‐enriched protein tyrosine phosphatase (STEP) has been described as a regulator of multiple kinases and glutamate receptor subunits critical for synaptic plasticity. Published behavioral and biochemical characterization from the founder line of STEP knockout (KO) mice revealed superior cognitive performance, with enhanced phosphorylation of substrates such as ERK, Fyn and GluN2B; suggesting that inhibitors of STEP may have potential as therapeutic agents for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The objectives of this work aimed to replicate and extend the previously reported behavioral consequences of STEP knockout. Consistent with previous reported data, STEP KO mice demonstrated exploratory activity levels and similar motor coordination relative to WT littermate controls as well as intact memory in a Y‐maze spatial novelty test. Interestingly, KO mice demonstrated deficits in pre‐pulse inhibition as well as reduced seizure threshold relative to WT controls. Immunohistochemical staining of brains revealed the expected gene‐dependent reduction in STEP protein confirming knockout in the mice. The present data confirm expression and localization of STEP and the absence in KO mice, and describe functional downstream implications of reducing STEP levels in vivo. 相似文献

Chromium is an essential trace element and is associated with some biological pathways, especially with glucose tolerance.
For these reasons, we decided to determine the concentration of chromium in two sets of Brazilian medicinal plants. The first
group consisted of plants that are considered as antidiabetic, whereas the second included plants that do not have this therapeutic
property. The concentration of chromium was determined by flameless atomic absorption. All the plants analyzed contain chromium
in the normal range for this element, but the hypoglycemic plants contain more chromium than the others (1–4 μg/g compared
