The denitrification potential and density of denitrifying bacteria were determined in suboxidized sediments of Matupi Harbor (Papua New Guinea). The sediments were characterized by low denitrification potentials, not exceeding 0.8 nM/(g h). The maximum density of denitrifying bacteria was recorded in the upper sediment horizons and was 104 cells/g of wet ground.  相似文献

A weathered medium crude oil was applied to experimental plots of Scirpus pungens (Three-square Bulrush) in a freshwater wetland to determine the efficacy of strategies for shoreline oil spill bioremediation based on nutrient enrichment (bioremediation) and plant growth (phytoremediation). Plots were unoiled, oiled with no added nutrients, or oiled with repeated applications of phosphate and nitrate fertilizers. Following initial treatments, the experimental plots were raked to simulate the activity of wave action on oil penetration, and plants in one fertilized plot were cut repeatedly. The sediments were sampled at regular intervals for 15 months after oiling, and the loss of oil was assessed by 4-day laboratory tests of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioaccumulation by trout, as demonstrated by increases in activity of liver cytochrome P450 (CYP1A) enzymes. Oil alone, oil mixed with sediments in the lab, and oiled sediments from treated plots all induced CYP1A activity relative to untreated controls, indicating the presence and bioavailability of PAH. Induction did not vary with nutrient treatments, but declined by 80% within 15 months of oiling, and chemical analyses indicated equivalent losses of hydrocarbons in sediment. These results demonstrate that bioavailable PAHs persisted in measurable quantities for at least 1.25 years following oiling, and that stimulation of plant growth did not affect the rate of oil disappearance. The controlling factors were likely weathering and sediment movement.  相似文献

The current recognition that chemical measurements are uncertain indicators of biological consequences of pollution has shifted the emphasis away from assessing environmental chemistry alone toward the inclusion of measurements of the health of organisms. Effects of pollutants begin with the individual, have subsequent repercussions on population level processes, and ramifications for community structure and functions. Pollutants act at a molecular level and the biochemical lesions is the first step in the manifestation of effects. Technologies that operate at the cellular level assist in elucidating toxicity. Higher levels of integration include an organism's capacity for growth. Laboratory bioassays andin situ research can monitor physiological incapacities and assist in predicting population level effects. The horse mussel Atrina zelandica (Gray) is a large, suspension feeding pinnid bivalve, common in coastal and estuarine areas of northern New Zealand. As a suspension feeder, Atrina is likely to be influenced by suspended sediment loads. We conducted a laboratory experiment to determine the effect of short-term elevations in turbidity levels, such as those commonly recorded during storms, on the physiological condition and clearance rates of Atrina. We also conducted a field survey and a 3-month transplant experiment at multiple sites along a gradient of increasing suspended sediment load in a New Zealand estuary. Laboratory clearance rates of Atrina declined above a threshold suspended sediment concentration, and Atrina physiological condition at the end of this experiment was lower in high cf. low turbidity treatments. Decreases in Atrina condition were detected after exposure to elevated levels for only 3 days. The field survey and transplant experiment provided empirical evidence of a strong, negative effect of increasing suspended sediment flux on the physiological condition of Atrina. We suggest that relationships between the physiological condition of suspension feeders and sediment settling flux could provide a link between sediment inputs, which commonly occur as a result of catchment runoff during rainfall events, and the ecological health of estuarine and shallow coastal areas. Our study also demonstrated that Atrina have a natural distribution limit controlled by suspended sediment load. Thus, there is potential for larger-scale functional and structural effects on benthic communities in estuarine and coastal areas with high rates of sedimentation.  相似文献

【背景】洞穴环境中蕴含丰富而独特的细菌资源,对洞穴环境中细菌的分离培养有助于了解洞穴细菌多样性及细菌资源的挖掘和利用。【目的】利用不同培养基分离细菌,探究钟乳石表面可培养细菌的多样性及其种间互作关系。【方法】通过11种培养基对织金洞内钟乳石沉积物表面的细菌进行分离纯化,并利用16S rRNA基因序列分析初步确定分离菌株的分类地位。在R软件下,通过Bipartite包分析可培养细菌属间的相互作用。【结果】从钟乳石沉积物表面共分离出206株细菌,它们隶属于4门25属45种,香农(Shannon)指数为4.78,辛普森(Simpson)指数为0.95。变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus)分别为样品中可培养细菌的优势门(47.09%)和优势属(29.61%)。无机寡营养培养基有助于洞穴钟乳石沉积物细菌的分离。属水平-采样点网络分析表明,可培养细菌分布具有非随机、显著的嵌套性。芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus)、德沃斯氏菌属(Devosia)、产碱杆菌属(Alcaligenes)、节杆菌属(Arthrobacter)和短杆菌属(Brevibacterium)在细菌群落中存在较多的有效合作值(Effective Partners)和亲密度(Closeness),被其他细菌所依赖程度(Species Strength)较高,是该群落中的重要组成类群。【结论】织金洞内钟乳石沉积物表面存在丰富的细菌资源,分析细菌类群在群落中的作用应结合细菌相对丰度和网络分析。  相似文献

Oxygen concentration profiles have been measured, by means of with microelectrodes in sediments of Lake Baikal and Lake Malawi, along transects allowing to give a survey of two major ancient Rift lakes: Lake Baikal (Eastern Siberia) and Lake Malawi (East Africa), along depth transects in the constitutive basins of the lakes and/or of relevant depths with regard to oxygen (including including the deepest point, 1680 m, in Lake Baikal). Sediment oxygen penetration depths (SOPs) display very different patterns, depending on the lake in the two lakes. In Lake Baikal, SOPs are variable, show no significant relationship with bathymetric depth and are surprisingly deep on Akademichesky ridge (> 50.0 mm), emphasizing the distinctive feature of this region in the lake. While the Selenga river is an important source of eutrophication, the similarity of SOP-values in the Selenga shallow with those of most other sites suggests either a dilution of organic material by allochthonous matter, or a strong south-to-north transport of particles. In Lake Malawi, available oxygen is restricted to a maximum of three millimetres of the sediment, and there is a negative relationship with bathymetric depth, as a result of a steady decline of oxygen concentration with depth through the water column. Amongst the few parameters known to affect SOPs, the oxygen consumption by the sediment seems the most significant in both lakes. SOP-values furthermore confirm differences in the trophic status of Baikal and Malawi, respectively. The importance of oxygen as a factor likely to create ecological segregation for benthic organisms is discussed. Lake Malawi offers possibilities of bathymetric segregation but no vertical segregation in the sediment. In contrast, no bathymetric segregation related to oxygen is possible in Lake Baikal, but vertical segregation in the sediment is very likely. Roseobacter clade bacteria (RCB) are abundant in marine bacterioplankton worldwide and central to pelagic sulfur cycling. Very little is known about their abundance and function in marine sediments. We investigated the abundance, diversity and sulfur oxidation potential of RCB in surface sediments of two tidal flats. Here, RCB accounted for up to 9.6% of all cells and exceeded abundances commonly known for pelagic RCB by 1000-fold as revealed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA and sulfate thiohydrolase (SoxB) genes indicated diverse, possibly sulfur-oxidizing RCB related to sequences known from bacterioplankton and marine biofilms. To investigate the sulfur oxidation potential of RCB in sediments in more detail, we analyzed a metagenomic fragment from a RCB. This fragment encoded the reverse dissimilatory sulfite reductase (rDSR) pathway, which was not yet found in RCB, a novel type of sulfite dehydrogenase (SoeABC) and the Sox multi-enzyme complex including the SoxCD subunits. This was unexpected as soxCD and dsr genes were presumed to be mutually exclusive in sulfur-oxidizing prokaryotes. This unique gene arrangement would allow a metabolic flexibility beyond known sulfur-oxidizing pathways. We confirmed the presence of dsrA by geneFISH in closely related RCB from an enrichment culture. Our results show that RCB are an integral part of the microbial community in marine sediments, where they possibly oxidize inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in oxic and suboxic sediment layers.  相似文献

作为浅水湖泊的重要特性之一,由风浪等动力作用引起的沉积物再悬浮对浮游藻类的初级生产力、群落结构具有重要意义。本研究通过生长季节(5-6月)在太湖梅梁湾湖岸的中宇宙模拟实验,比较在同样的外源负荷下浮游藻类对不同的沉积物再悬浮程度的影响特征,以及其主要的影响因子。实验在约250L的大桶中进行,通过位于沉积物-水界面的水泵的动力作用,模拟了三个不同程度沉积物再悬浮:无再悬浮即对照、弱悬浮和强悬浮程度。实验结果显示:(1)对照、弱悬浮和强悬浮之间悬浮物浓度呈显著性梯度变化,平均值分别为5、30、40 mg·L-1,水下20cm光密度分别为表面光密度的80%、35%和25%。TN和TP在悬浮处理组显著高于对照组,但是弱悬浮和强悬浮之间差异不显著。生物可利用的各种溶解性营养盐形式对再悬浮的响应特征不明显。(2)浮游藻类生物量和群落结构对再悬浮的响应显著。对照组的Chla在整个实验阶段都很低,强悬浮组和弱悬浮组的平均Chla分别5倍和2倍于对照组。实验初始浮游藻类群落种类多样性低,优势种群主要为隐藻(隐藻属Cryptomonas spp.和蓝隐藻Chroomonas acuta)。再悬浮处理显著促进了隐藻的生长,但弱悬浮和强悬浮之间差异不显著。对照组优势种群演替为微小型种类蓝隐藻和绿藻门的纤维藻属(Ankistrodesmus sp.)。(3)以相对丰度为统计数据,浮游动物群落结构对再悬浮的响应显著,弱悬浮和强悬浮之间差异不显著。对照组的枝角类大型种类溞属(Daphnia spp.)丰度显著高于再悬浮处理组,枝角类小型种类象鼻溞属(Bosmina spp.)和网纹溞属(Ceriodaphnia spp.)、轮虫丰度则呈相反趋势。可见,再悬浮促进了沉积物营养盐的释放和水下光照的衰减,还影响了浮游动物的群落结构,使其向摄食藻类能力较差的种类演替,从而在上行(bottom-up)和下行(top-down)两个方面影响了浮游藻类的现存量和群落结构。  相似文献

The areal distribution of organic C contents, 13C values, total N and P and biogenic Si contents in surficial sediments were used to study the distribution, origin and diagenetic transformations of sedimented biogenic debris in the eutrophic subalpine Lake Bled (Slovenia), which for most of the yearhas an anoxic hypolimnion. The influence of an allochthonous input, restricted to the western basin, was clearly traced by higher organic C and total N and P contents, higher 13C values, and higher sedimentation rate in comparison to the eastern basin. The low 13C values of sedimentary organic matter in the major part of the lake, lower than the 13C values of different types of organic matter, suggest that this sedimentary organic matter is most probably the product of a microbial community and not a residue of primary production.The temporal variation of benthic diffusive fluxes of NH4, Si and PO4, derived from modelling the pore water profiles, was related to sedimentation of phytoplanktonic blooms, while the PO4 fluxes were also dependent on changing redox conditions at the sediment-water interface in the period of the winter-spring overtum. The removal of PO4 in pore waters is probably due to the adsorption of phosphate and precipitation of apatite and vivianite. The budget of C, N and P at the sediment-water interface revealed a high recycling efficiency (>70%), also confirmed by the rather uniform (or only slightly decreasing) vertical profiles of organic C, total N and P in sediment cores and C/N and C/P ratios. The percentage of biogenic Si recycling is low (<10%), suggesting its removal in sediments.  相似文献

采砂是一项具有巨大生态影响的经济活动.利用多源遥感影像描述鄱阳湖中部的采砂分布,分析其对悬浮泥沙浓度的影响.2011年7月28日的Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)5用于采砂相关船只的识别,2009-2011年7-8月的Terra卫星中分辨率成像光谱仪(MODIS)影像用于悬浮泥沙浓度的反演,(Before-after-control-impact,BACI)方法用于采砂影响评价.Landsat TM 5影像解译结果发现鄱阳湖中部的两个采砂区和90余艘船只,MODIS Terra反演结果显示在采砂区及其下游区域悬浮泥沙浓度剧增,BACI评价结果揭示采砂是导致此区域悬浮泥沙浓度增加的主要因素.平衡经济发展与生态保护之间的关系,将因采砂而造成的负面影响降到最低,使鄱阳湖的各种生态功能全面发挥是紧要的.  相似文献
