According to the green wave hypothesis, herbivores follow the flush of spring growth of forage plants during their spring migration to northern breeding grounds. In this study we compared two green wave indices for predicting the timing of the spring migration of avian herbivores: the satellite-derived green wave index (GWI), and an index of the rate of acceleration in temperature (GDDjerk). The GWI was calculated from MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) satellite imagery and GDDjerk from gridded temperature data using products from the global land data assimilation system (GLDAS). To predict the timing of arrival at stopover and breeding sites, we used four years (2008–2011) of tracking data from 12 GPS-tagged barnacle geese, a long-distance herbivorous migrant, wintering in the Netherlands, breeding in the Russian Arctic. The stopover and breeding sites for these birds were identified and the relations between date of arrival with the date of 50% GWI and date of peak GDDjerk at each site were analyzed using mixed effect linear regression. A cross-validation method was used to compare the predictive accuracy of the GWI and GDDjerk indices. Significant relationships were found between the arrival dates at the stopover and breeding sites for the dates of 50% GWI as well as the peak GDDjerk (p < 0.01). The goose arrival dates at both stopover and breeding sites were predicted more accurately using GWI (R2cv = 0.68, RMSDcv = 5.9 and  R2cv= 0.71, RMSDcv = 3.9 for stopover and breeding sites, respectively) than GDDjerk. The GDDjerk returned a lower accuracy for prediction of goose arrival dates at stopover ( R2cv = 0.45, RMSDcv = 7.79) and breeding sites (R2cv = 0.55, RMSDcv = 4.93). The positive correlation between the absolute residual values of the GDDjerk model and distance to the breeding sites showed that this index is highly sensitive to latitude. This study demonstrates that the satellite-derived green wave index (GWI) can accurately predict the timing of goose migration, irrespective of latitude and therefore is suggested as a reliable green wave index for predicting the timing of avian herbivores spring migration.  相似文献

In vertebrates, the endocrine system translates environmental changes into physiological responses on which natural selection can act to regulate individual fitness and, ultimately, population dynamics. Corticosterone (CORT) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) are important regulators of the avian endocrine system but relatively few studies have investigated their downstream effects on key morphological fitness‐related traits in free‐living populations. This study quantified endocrine–morphology relationships in free‐living Greenland Barnacle Geese Branta leucopsis that breed in the high Arctic. CORT and DHEA were extracted from feather and blood samples and tested for relationships with three morphological traits associated with survival and reproduction: bodyweight, body size and facial plumage coloration. We expected CORT concentration to be higher in birds with less favourable morphological traits (i.e. lighter, smaller and less attractive) and DHEA to be higher in birds with more favourable traits (i.e. heavier, bigger and more attractive). As expected, individuals with higher CORT during the post‐breeding moult (July/August) had significantly lower bodyweight during the following winter (November–April). In contrast, we found no robust DHEA–morphology relationships and no statistically significant relationship between CORT and body size or facial plumage. Overall, this study provides evidence of a negative relationship between CORT and bodyweight extending across different seasons of the annual cycle in a long‐distance migrant. This is of particular interest because bodyweight fluctuates rapidly in response to environmental resources and is closely linked to both survival and reproductive success in this species. Understanding the relationship between CORT and key morphological traits is important because endocrine‐disrupting contaminants in the Arctic increasingly interfere with CORT function in birds, including Barnacle Geese, and based on the results of this study may have consequences for bodyweight regulation.  相似文献

Hooded Vultures Necrosyrtes monachus are critically endangered but little is known of their year-round use of nests or whether other species usurp Hooded Vulture nest sites. We investigated visitation rates by Hooded Vultures and other species (including potential nest predators and usurpers) to examine their effect on Hooded Vulture breeding success. We present observations of 33 species recorded by camera traps at 12 Hooded Vulture nests over a total of 93 nest-months (2 095 nest-days). Several pairs of Hooded Vultures visited their nests regularly during the non-breeding season, some adding nesting material, highlighting that pairs visited their nest(s) year round. Egyptian Geese Alopochen aegyptiaca, potential usurpers of raptor nests, were present at occupied and unoccupied Hooded Vulture nests, but we recorded no usurpation of nests by Egyptian Geese and they had no impact on vulture breeding success. Hooded Vulture breeding failure was linked to two species only: camera-trap imagery recorded one case of predation of a vulture egg by a Chacma Baboon Papio ursinus, and one case of a Martial Eagle Polemaetus bellicosus predating a vulture nestling. We recommend expanding the Hooded Vulture nest monitoring programme to include more pairs.  相似文献

Many species of waterfowl undergo a post‐breeding simultaneous flight feather moult (wing moult) which renders them flightless and vulnerable to predation for up to 4 weeks. Here we present an analysis of the correlations between individual time‐budgets and body mass states in 13 captive Barnacle Geese Branta leucopsis throughout an entire wing moult. The daily percentage of time spent resting was positively correlated with initial body mass at the start of wing moult. Behaviour of individual birds during wing moult is dependent on initial physiological state, which may in turn be dependent on foraging ability; the storage of energy before the start of wing moult will help birds to reduce exposure to the dangers of predation.  相似文献

Sequence alignment is not directly applicable to whole genome phylogeny since several events such as rearrangements make full length alignments impossible. Here, a novel alignment-free method derived from the standpoint of information theory is proposed and used to construct the whole-genome phylogeny for a population of viruses from 13 viral families comprising 218 dsDNA viruses. The method is based on information correlation (IC) and partial information correlation (PIC). We observe that (i) the IC-PIC tree segregates the population into clades, the membership of each is remarkably consistent with biologist's systematics only with little exceptions; (ii) the IC-PIC tree reveals potential evolutionary relationships among some viral families; and (iii) the IC-PIC tree predicts the taxonomic positions of certain “unclassified” viruses. Our approach provides a new way for recovering the phylogeny of viruses, and has practical applications in developing alignment-free methods for sequence classification.  相似文献

Nauplii batch cultures of Balanus amphitrite were reared with four different diatoms (Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Chaetoceros gracilis, silicate-limited C. gracilis) at three different cells concentrations: 1×105, 5×105, and 1×106 cells ml−1. The cyprid energy reserves were quantified as the ratio of triacylglycerols (TAG) to DNA. Energy reserves of larvae fed on different diatoms at a concentration of 1×106 cells ml−1 were ranked in the order: silicate-limited C. gracilis>C. gracilis>T. pseudonana>S. costatum. There was a significant linear relationship between the TAG content of the diet and cyprid energy reserves. The effect of cyprid energy reserves on metamorphosis to polystyrene surface in the presence and the absence of conspecific settlement factor (SF) was studied after 12, 24, and 48 h of incubation. A strong positive correlation between energy reserves and percent metamorphosis was observed in the absence of SF (r12 h=0.88, r24 h=0.82, r48 h=0.68, P<0.05). A weak positive correlation was observed in the presence of SF (r12 h=0.43, r24 h=0.48, r48 h=0.50, P<0.05). In both treatments, more than 80% of the cyprids with high energy reserves metamorphosed within 24 h. In contrast, a high proportion of cyprids with low energy reserves metamorphosed in response to SF in 24 h. Our results indicate that discriminatory metamorphic behavior of cyprids is closely linked to their TAG/DNA ratio, a proxy for energy reserve.  相似文献

In order to understand the interaction between extrinsic and intrinsic factors on the metamorphic success of Balanus amphitrite cyprids, we investigated the effect of cyprids energy reserves and physiological age (physiological condition of cyprids) on the metamorphic success under five different combinations of water temperature and salinity mimicking different seasons in subtropical Hong Kong: 18 °C/30‰ (winter), 22 °C/34‰ (spring), 28 °C/30‰ (summer), 28 °C/20‰ (rainy season), and 25 °C/32‰ (autumn). The energy reserves of the cyprids were quantified by the ratio of triacylglycerols (TAG) to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The metamorphic success of cyprids was distinctly influenced by their physiological condition and laboratory-mimicked seasons. There was a significant interaction between these factors. In clear contrast to young cyprids with low-TAG/DNA ratio, there was no difference in the metamorphic success of aged cyprids with high-TAG/DNA ratio among seasons. Our results suggest that the physiological condition of cyprids and seasonal variation in water temperature and salinity may jointly determine the metamorphic success of cyprids, and consequently, modulate the population dynamics of B. amphitrite in subtropical waters.  相似文献

To arctic breeding geese, the salt marshes of the International Wadden Sea are important spring staging areas. Many of these marshes have always been grazed with livestock (mainly cattle and sheep). To evaluate the influence of livestock grazing on composition and structure of salt-marsh communities and its consequences for habitat use by geese, a total of 17 pairs of grazed and ungrazed marshes were visited both in April and May 1999, and the accumulated grazing pressure by geese was estimated using dropping counts. Observed grazing pressure was related to management status and to relevant vegetation parameters.The intensity of livestock grazing influences the vegetation on the marsh. Salt marshes that are not grazed by livestock are characterised by stands with a taller canopy, a lower cover of grasses preferred by geese, and a higher cover of plants that are not preferred.Overall goose-dropping densities are significantly lower in ungrazed marshes compared to marshes grazed by livestock. Some ungrazed marshes had comparatively high goose grazing pressure, and these were all natural marshes on a sandy soil, or artificial mainland marshes with a recent history of intensive livestock grazing. Goose grazing is associated with a short canopy. The plant communities with short canopy, dominated by Agrostis stolonifera, Festuca rubra and Puccinellia maritima, together account for 85% of all goose droppings in our data.The sites that were not visited by geese differed very little from those that were visited, in the parameters we measured. This might indicate that there was no shortage of available habitat for spring staging geese in the Wadden Sea, in the study period.  相似文献

In order to use recreational hunting as a socially acceptable management tool, the practice of this activity should adhere strictly to the ethical standards of animal welfare and the conservation guidelines on sustainable harvest. A key measure in this regard is monitoring the negative side effects of hunting associated with crippling of wild animals. This study introduces “crippling ratio” (the number of individuals crippled for each successfully bagged) as a novel approach to evaluate hunter performance in a way that accounts for differences in population size and harvest pressure, and which therefore can be used to evaluate initiatives launched to reduce wounding of wild game. We demonstrate that crippling ratios of Svalbard-breeding Pink-footed Geese Anser brachyrhynchus has been declining steadily over the last 25 years despite an increasing harvest rate. Hence, for juvenile birds that have not previously experienced a hunting season, and therefore can be used as a direct measure of annual variation in the crippling ratio, the number of geese crippled for each goose bagged dropped from 1.00 in 1992–0.11 in 2016. This corresponds to an 89% reduction in crippling frequency. Among adult birds the ratio dropped from 9.75 in 1992–1.99 in 2016, corresponding to a reduction of 80%. This positive development might be ascribed to effective awareness campaigns, training of hunters and adjustment of hunting techniques in both Denmark and, recently, Norway. It exemplifies that monitoring the outcome of management programmes is an important element in ensuring that measures introduced to manage wildlife are socially defensible.  相似文献
