Abstract. Vegetation succession in three back‐barrier salt marshes in the Wadden Sea was studied using a data set comprising 25 years of vegetation development recorded at permanent quadrats. The effect of livestock grazing on succession was assessed by comparing quadrats where grazing was experimentally prevented or imposed. We studied changes at the species level as well as at the level of the plant community. Special attention is given to effects on plant species richness and community characteristics that are relevant for lagomorphs (hares and rabbits) and geese. Inundation frequency and grazing were most important in explaining the variation in species abundance data. The three marshes studied overlap in the occurrence of different plant communities and the observed patterns were consistent between them. Clear differences in frequency and abundance of plant species were observed related to grazing. Most plant species had a greater incidence in grazed treatments. Species richness increased with elevation, and was 1.5 to 2 × higher in the grazed salt marsh. Grazing negatively influenced Atriplex portulacoides and Elymus athericus, whereas Puccinellia maritima and Festuca rubra showed a positive response. The communities dominated by Elymus athericus, Artemisia maritima and Atriplex portulacoides were restricted to the ungrazed marsh. Communities dominated by Puccinellia maritima, Juncus gerardi and Festuca rubra predominantly occurred at grazed sites. As small vertebrate herbivores prefer these plants and communities for foraging, livestock grazing thus facilitates for them.  相似文献

Fundamental to effective management of migratory waterbird populations is an understanding of their flyway delineation. Taiga Bean Geese Anser fabalis fabalis wintering in NW Denmark, Scotland and England are considered to originate from northern and central Sweden, southern and central Norway (‘Western flyway’), those wintering in southern Sweden, NE and southern Denmark are considered to originate from northern Fennoscandia and western Russia (‘Central flyway’), and those wintering in eastern Germany and Poland (which show far less favourable conservation status) are thought to come from western Siberia (‘Eastern 1 flyway’), although evidence to demonstrate this has largely been lacking. Evidence for different natal and moult origins of Taiga Bean Geese was investigated using stable isotope analyses of feathers of four elements (δ2H, δ13C, δ15N and δ34S). There were significant differences in isotopic composition of feathers from Swedish (Central) and German (Eastern 1) wintering populations and those moulting in Sweden in late summer (Western), which validated the three proposed major management flyway units above. The strong continental gradient in the stable hydrogen isotope ratios in precipitation (δ2Hp) across the region was used to assign wintering birds geospatially to natal and moulting origin, indicating separate natal and moulting areas for German (= 37, from western Siberia) and Swedish (= 20, Fennoscandia and more western Russia) wintering birds. These results confirm the largely discrete nature of these three flyways and contribute significantly to our ability to deliver effective targeted and appropriate research, monitoring and management actions throughout the ranges of these flyways.  相似文献

We have examined the indirect effects of UV-A and UV-B on cypris attachment of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin through their effects on microbial films. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that both UV-A and UV-B radiation can indirectly affect the larval attachment of barnacles by altering the microbial film bioactivity. Microbial films were developed from mid-intertidal region (∼1 m above Mean Low Water Level) for 6 days and subjected to ambient levels of ultraviolet radiation. Response of cyprids to untreated and UV-treated microbial films was investigated using double-dish still water choice bioassay. Results showed that both UV-A and UV-B caused a decrease in the percentage of respiring bacterial cells in microbial films and this effect increased with UV energy. With the same UV energy, UV-B caused a greater decrease in respiring bacterial cells than UV-A. However, despite strong UV radiation, the bioactivities of microbial films (i.e., stimulation of cypris attachment) remain unchanged. Results of this study suggest that increased UV radiation, which might occur due to ozone depletion, may not significantly affect the barnacle recruitment by means of affecting the inductive larval attachment cues of microbial films.  相似文献

Due to the regulations and bans regarding the use of traditional toxic chemicals against marine fouling organisms and the practical impediments to the commercialization of natural product antifoulants, there is an urgent need for compounds that are antifouling-active, environmentally friendly, and have a potential for commercial application. In this study, a series of common, commercially available pyrethroid products, which are generally used as environmentally safe insecticides, was evaluated for antifouling activity in the laboratory using an anti-settlement test with cyprids of the barnacle Balanus albicostatus and also in a field experiment. Laboratory assay showed that all eleven pyrethroids (namely, rich d-trans-allethrin, Es-biothrin, rich d-prallethrin, S-prallethrin, tetramethrin, rich d-tetramethrin, phenothrin, cyphenothrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, and high active cypermethrin) were able to inhibit barnacle settlement (EC50 range of 0.0316 to 87.00 μg/ml) without significant toxicity. Analysis of structure–activity relationships suggested that the cyano group at the α-carbon position had a significant influence on the expression of antifouling activity in pyrethroids. In the field, the antifouling activity of pyrethroids was further confirmed, with the most potent pyrethroids being cypermethrin and high active cypermethrin, which displayed efficiency comparable with that of tributyltin. In summary, our investigation indicated that these pyrethroids have a great and practical commercial potential as antifouling agents.  相似文献

Indirect interactions in food webs can strongly influence the net effect of global change on ecological communities yet they are rarely quantified and hence remain poorly understood. Using a 22-year time series, we investigated climate-induced and predator-mediated indirect effects on grazing intensity in the tundra food web of Bylot Island, which experienced a warming trend over the last two decades. We evaluated the relative effects of environmental parameters on the proportion of plant biomass grazed by geese in wetlands and examined the temporal changes in the strength of these cascading effects. Migrating geese are the dominant herbivores on Bylot Island and can consume up to 60% of the annual production of wetland graminoids. Spring North Atlantic Oscillation, mid-summer temperatures and summer abundance of lemmings (prey sharing predators with geese) best-explained annual variation in grazing intensity. Goose grazing impact increased in years with high temperatures and high lemming abundance. However, the strength of these indirect effects on plants changed over time. Grazing intensity was weakly explained by environmental factors in recent years, which were marked by a sharp increase in plant primary production and steady decrease in grazing pressure. Indirect effects do not seem to be reversing the direct positive effect of warming on wetland plants. We suggest that cascading effects on plants may lag considerably behind direct effects in vertebrate dominated arctic communities, especially where key herbivore populations are strongly affected by factors outside of the Arctic [Current Zoology 60 (2): 189-202, 2014].  相似文献

以鹅细小病毒(Gooseparvovirus,GPV)HG5/82株基因组作为PCR反应模板,扩增vp基因3’端长864bp的基因片段,将其克隆到pMD18-TSimple克隆载体后转化入大肠杆菌TG1。筛选阳性质粒,并通过BamHⅠ和HindⅢ将外源基因定向克隆到原核表达载体pET-30a,阳性重组质粒经确证性序列测定,证明外源片断插入到pET-30a的预期位置。将其转入大肠杆菌BL21,经终浓度为0.6mmol/L的IPTG诱导,SDS-PAGE表明外源基因获得表达,融合蛋白分子量约为34kDa。将诱导后的工程菌用6mol/L盐酸胍裂解,经超声处理后离心,利用镍离子亲和树脂对裂解产物的上清进行纯化。用纯化的融合蛋白免疫新西兰白兔制备兔抗该融合蛋白的抗血清。Westernblotting结果表明制备的兔抗血清与该融合蛋白及亲本病毒的结构蛋白都具有反应性。结合前期工作进展对GPVVP蛋白的B细胞线性抗原表位进行定位。  相似文献

Abstract.— The precise dependence of barnacle leg form on flow suggests the wave-swept environment imposes strong selection on suspension feeding limbs. I conducted three experiments to determine the mechanism, age dependence, and response time of cirrus variation in the acorn barnacle Balanus glandula . (1) To test whether cirrus variation arises via genetic or environmental mechanisms, I transplanted juvenile barnacles from one wave-exposed and one protected population into high and low flow conditions. Both populations exhibited similar abilities to modify cirri in response to experimental velocities: transplanted barnacles grew legs up to 84% longer in low flow. A small (up to 24%), but significant difference between source populations suggested slight genetic divergence in leg form. (2) Because flow is heterogeneous over space and time, I tested whether cirrus plasticity was limited to juveniles by transplanting both juveniles and adults from exposed and protected shores into quiet water. Remarkably, both juveniles and adults from the wave-exposed population produced legs over 100% longer than the original population, whereas protected barnacles remained unchanged. (3) A third transplant of adults into quiet water demonstrated that wave-exposed B. glandula modified cirrus form very quickly-within 18 days, or one to two molts. Results from these experiments suggest that variation in cirrus form is largely environmentally induced, but genetic differences may account for some variation observed among field populations; spatial and temporal flow heterogeneity appear to have selected for extreme flexibility of feeding form throughout a barnacle's life; and flow heterogeneity in the wave-swept environment appears to have selected for rapid ecophenotypic responses in the form of feeding structures.  相似文献

In this study we accumulate evidence that brown hare competes with brent goose for food resources in a temperate salt marsh. We show that both species overlap in habitat use and share food plants. The two herbivores mainly used the common habitat at different times of the day, with hares active in the dark and geese during the daylight. During the morning and evening, however, the habitat was exploited simultaneously. Food availability was manipulated by excluding brent geese on both small-scale (30 m2) and large-scale (0.96 ha) plots, while hares had free access everywhere. Exclusion of brent geese enhanced the level of utilisation by hares in both Festuca and Puccinellia dominated marshes, which are among the most intensively grazed parts of the salt marsh. The increase in hare grazing pressure following goose exclusion was stronger, when the adjacent control plots had attracted more goose visitation. When geese were excluded, the decrease in Festuca consumption by geese was completely matched by increased hare grazing, while for Puccinellia only part of the `surplus' was harvested. Enhanced levels of hare utilisation were not due to geese interfering directly with hare, nor due to hares avoiding goose droppings. Considering the interaction from the other perspective, hares were observed to disturb geese effectively in every spring. This might have reduced exploitation by geese of the shared resources. On the basis of our experimental results, we conclude that in this salt- marsh system competition for food with brent geese plays a role in the habitat use of hares, and that hares can reduce goose exploitation of shared habitats. Heritabilities, genetic variances and covariances for body size traits, i.e. tarsus length, head length and body mass, were estimated under different environmental conditions in a Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) population. Under poor growth conditions, that is, when average body size of fully grown offspring in a given cohort was small, the offspring-parent regressions and full-sib analyses yielded heritability estimates not significantly different from zero. By contrast, when growth conditions were normal or good the heritability estimates were generally significantly positive. Comparisons of genetic covariance estimates indicated that they also differed across the analysed environmental conditions. This result, together with similar results obtained in studies of passerine birds, suggests that genotype-environment interactions might be frequent within the range of environments normally encountered by birds in natural populations. If general, such results might question the validity of assuming approximate constancy of additive genetic variances and covariances over time and environments in evolutionary models.  相似文献
