The analysis of archaeological charcoal is used to reconstruct the wood resources in north-west Portugal from the late Bronze
Age to the Roman period. In this paper, the results obtained from 12 sites are considered, and their implications for interpreting
historical human behaviour towards the natural environment and vegetation are discussed. The results indicate a similar kind
of exploitation of the vegetation by different populations which used a similar range of wood resources. Fifty-one taxa are
identified and three main natural biotopes are distinguished, including mixed oak forest, wasteland vegetation and riparian
forest. The large number of taxa identified seems to testify to the existence of a good sampling of the woody vegetation growing
in the proximity of the settlements. Both dry and fresh wood were used, and the value and possible uses are suggested for

Food and water resources used by the Madagascan hissing-cockroach mite,Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi
We determined the food source and water balance properties of the hissing-cockroach mite, Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi. The food source for mites was identified using Evans blue dye by direct injection into a fasting host cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa, or by incorporation into cockroach food. No coloration was observed in mites on dye-injected cockroaches, but coloration was present in mites when only the food for the cockroaches had been stained. Thus, the mites are scavengers of cockroach food, and are not parasitic as previously thought. Our results demonstrate that the mites can absorb water from the air anywhere between 0.84 and 0.93 a

(%RH/100), and wax-block experiments revealed that the mouth is the site of uptake. The mites are normally clumped together on the host, typically in between the cockroach's legs and around the spiracles. Water loss rates for mites in groups (0.16% h-1) were far lower than for isolated mites (0.30% h-1), suggesting a group effect with regard to water balance. Above the transition temperature of 30°C rate of water loss was rapid. The sites occupied by mites on the cockroach's body seem to be highly specific for feeding and absorption of water vapour. 相似文献

Today, the search for new energy sources continues unabated throughout the North. At the same time, scientists are increasingly concerned over the degradation of the Arctic and sub-Arctic environment stemming from fossil fuel and other large-scale energy projects already underway. Similar apprehensions are expressed by indigenous peoples who have often suffered from the impact of such development. While the most dramatic evidence of environmental devastation and social disruption is found in the Russian North, serious problems are by no means confined to that area alone. Nor are these negative effects necessarily limited to the borders of the country in which they originated. Indeed, the deleterious environmental impact of our global industrial economy has become sufficiently profound that social analysts are beginning to ask whether development strategies that cause such harm to the Arctic and sub-Arctic region should continue; and if not, what should replace them. Satellite RNA of bamboo mosaic potexvirus (satBaMV) is a linear RNA molecule which encodes a 20-kDa nonstructural protein.
Sequences of seven different satBaMV isolates from bamboo hosts in three genera showed 0.7% to 7.5% base variation which spanned
the whole RNA molecule. However, the putative 20-kDa open reading frame was all preserved in these isolates. The phylogenetic
relationship based on the nucleotide sequence did not show particular grouping of satBaMV from the host in one genus; neither
was the grouping of satBaMV evident by location of sampling. Putative secondary structures of the 3′ untranslated regions
showed a basic pattern with conserved hexanucleotides (ACCUAA) and polyadenylation signal (AAUAAA) located in the loop regions.
Although the satBaMV-encoded 20-kDa protein is a nonstructural protein, its predicted secondary structure contains eight-stranded
β-sheets which may form ``jelly-roll' structure similar to that found in capsid protein encoded by satellite virus of panicum
mosaic virus.

Multielement analysis was performed on bone samples extracted from the femora of 39 adults from three mortuary sites (Johns Mound, Santa Catalina de Guale, and Santa Catalina de Guale de Santa Meria) and time periods (late preagricultural, early contact, and late contact) in the Georgia Bight. This study was used to investigate whether elemental analysis would support or contradict other lines of data regarding diets and dietary change previously generated for the region. The data are in agreement with an earlier interpretation, based on stable isotopes, that dietary maize increases through time but fails to support the idea that marine resources decreased in importance. Rather, it appears that the wild plant food component of the diets decreases as maize increases in importance; throughout the sequence, marine resources comprise a significant portion of the diets. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Synopsis
Raja erinacea and R. ocellata are sibling species which are positively correlated with each other by occurrence and numerical abundance. In sympatry the species undergo interactive segregation; R. erinacea feeds on a higher percentage of epifauna and R. ocellata feeds on a higher percentage of infauna.An isolated allopatric population of R. ocellata occurs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence which is phenotypically intermediate between the sympatric populations of R. erinacea and R. ocellata in characters related to feeding e.g. size, number of tooth rows in the upper jaw, and shape of the upper jaw. It appears probable that the allopatric population represents the morphological state of R. ocellata before it became sympatric with R. erinacea; divergence in size, number of tooth rows, and shape of the upper jaw between the two species developed after establishment of sympatry. These divergences in character traits, related to feeding, reduced competition between the two sympatric species and permitted the present wide overlap in their ranges.Character displacement is evidently rare in demersal fishes inhabiting the flat and soft bottoms of the northwestern Atlantic because the three other pairs of sibling species that occur there are parapatrically distributed and thus would not compete for resources. Raja erinacea and R. ocellata may have been restrained from establishing parapatry by another species pair of skates (R. senta and R. radiata) which have a complementary distribution and similar feeding habits of R. erinacea and R. ocellata but which occur in deeper water. 相似文献
