In the Baltic Sea, herring (Clupea harengus membras) spawns in the littoral zone, where its eggs are attached to algae or vascular plants. Field studies indicate that egg mortality
can be very high (up to 100%) in eggs that are attached to red algae (Rajasilta et al., 1989, 1993). Because high mortality can be due to allelochemical effects of the algae, we studied the mortality of herring eggs on different
algal substrates experimentally. Four types of substrates were tested: fresh Cladophora and Furcellaria, and Furcellaria that had decomposed six days or 23 days. The incubation time in the experiments was 3 days and incubation temperature 12–13 oC (ca. 700–800 h-degrees). The results were in accordance with observations made in field studies and indicated significant
differences among the substrate types. In eggs attached to fresh Cladophora, mortality was significantly lower (mean=2.8%; n=20) than in those attached to Furcellaria, independently of the treatment of the algae. The highest values of mortality (mean=14.4%; n=20) were found in eggs attached to Furcellaria that had decomposed over a six days’ period. This suggested that Furcellaria contain some chemical substances, which can cause mortality in herring embryos and the effect seems to be dependent on the

66 pp.) indicate that those blooms are caused by two isomorphic species – Scrippsiella hangoei (Schiller) Larsen, and a new species, tentatively belonging to the genus Woloszynskia. Until now there has been no report on how widely distributed these phytoplankton species are in the Baltic Sea. In this
study, the occurrence of Scrippsiella/Woloszynskia complex in the entire Baltic Sea was investigated, by using monitoring data from 1997 to 2003. The species occurred in a
salinity range from 2 to 8 PSU. Highest concentrations were observed at salinity 4.5–6.5 PSU. Maximum cell densities of Scrippsiella/Woloszynskia complex in the water column were mainly obtained in April or in the beginning of May by the water temperature <3 °C prior
to stratification was formed. In the central Gulf of Finland, the second maximum was found in 1999 and 2002 by the temperature

The transformation of chlorophyll a by two benthic bivalves – Dreissena polymorpha and Mytilus edulis and, for comparison, by the chironomid Chironomus plumosus – was examined. D. polymorpha is a suspension-feeding, freshwater but very salinity-tolerant species, M. edulis a suspension-feeding marine species, and C.␣plumosus a typical detritivorous freshwater species. All three are common in the Odra Estuary. Specimens of the three species were
collected from this area in the period 1999–2003. The bivalves were transferred to a compartment on land and kept in tanks
filled with water (filtered and unfiltered) collected simultaneously with the organisms, under light and temperature conditions
similar to those obtaining in their natural environment. Pigments in the water samples, faeces and pseudofaeces from the tanks,
and in the gut content from C. plumosus, were determined with HPLC. The digestion products of the three species were mainly phaeophorbides a, generally thought to originate mainly from zooplankton grazing, and pyrophaeophytin a in minor quantities. The results indicate that the main chlorophyll a derivatives in faeces and pseudofaeces and gut content of the three species were the same as those in the sediments of the
Baltic Sea, including the Odra Estuary. Our previous studies have shown that the sediments in this area are richer in phaeophorbides
a than sediments from other parts of the southern Baltic Sea. All this suggests that the benthos may play an important role

The paper contains the results of natural film experiments carried out on inland and coastal waters in the Dead Vistula catchment
area and mouth during 2000–2002, using the integrated Langmuir trough–Wilhelmy plate system. The static film parameters result
from the generalized scaling procedures applied to the surface pressure–area isotherms. They appear to reflect in a quantitative
and sensitive way the film composition (Alim, Mw, Eisoth), film solubility and the miscibility of its components (via R, ΔSc and y factors), and surface concentration (πeq, Γeq). The adsorption kinetics parameters: effective diffusion coefficient Deff/D and activation energy barrier Ea/RT are derived from dynamic surface pressure. There is a reason to suggest that certain classes of film-forming components or

The prevalence of antigrazing defense induction and the cues triggering induction in marine macroalgae are generally not well understood. We examined the capacity of defense and the mechanisms of regulation in five common perennial macroalgal species from the Baltic Sea, Furcellaria lumbricalis (Huds.) J. V. Lamour., Delesseria sanguinea (Huds.) J. V. Lamour., Phyllophora pseudoceranoides (S. G. Gmel.) Newroth et A. R. A. Taylor, Fucus serratus L., and Fucus evanescens C. Agardh. Specifically, we investigated whether direct feeding and/or waterborne cues from feeding on neighboring conspecifics decreased the palatability of the tested algae. Direct feeding by the local isopod Idotea baltica triggered the induction of chemical defense in Fur. lumbricalis, D. sanguinea, P. pseudoceranoides, F. serratus, and F. evanescens. The specific metabolic rate (SMR) and haemolymph osmolality (HO) of the mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii Gould, 1841 from Baltic brackish waters were measured at a habitat salinity of 7 psu (T = 15 °C, full air saturation) and after step-wise acclimation to a salinity range of 3-27 psu. Values of SMR at 7 psu varied between 0.40 and 3.89 J g− 1 WW h− 1 (n = 25, wet weight range 0.051-1.142 g) and were significantly (p < 0.05) related to the specimen's wet weight (WW) according to the power regression SMR = 0.94 WW− 0.41 (R2 = 0.68). The SMR of females did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) from those of males. When exposed to higher salinities, the SMR of R. harrisii decreased significantly (p < 0.05) and reached a minimum value at 23 psu (0.55 ± 0.05 J g− 1 WW h− 1, n = 6). Mean haemolymph osmolality at 7 psu amounted to 581 ± 26 mOsm kg− 1 (n = 5) and was 2.9 times higher than that of the external medium. R. harrisii hyperosmoregulated its body fluids up to 24 psu (727 mOsm kg− 1) at which salinity the isosmotic point was reached. 相似文献

In the present study, 307 ovaries of eastern Baltic cod Gadus morhua callarias sampled during the prespawning and spawning season 2000 were analysed histologically to estimate the seasonal prevalence and intensity of atresia. The number of atretic oocytes per ovary was estimated using a combination of the physical disector method and volume fraction (Delesse principle). Atretic oocytes were observed in 32% of the ovaries. Prevalence of atresia was independent of female size, but increased significantly with declining female condition from prespawning and through the spawning stages. The relative intensity of atresia, i.e. number of atretic oocytes in relation to normally developed vitellogenic oocytes, was low amounting to 1·4% on average. Similar to prevalence, relative intensity of atresia differed significantly between maturity stages and increased with decreasing female condition. The population egg loss due to atresia amounted to 4·6% indicating that Baltic cod was performing close to maximum productivity, i.e. potential egg production. 相似文献

Bacterial communities associated with the brown alga Laminaria saccharina from the Baltic Sea and from the North Sea were investigated using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. The rhizoid, cauloid, meristem and phyloid revealed different 16S rRNA gene denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis banding patterns indicating a specific association of bacterial communities with different parts of the alga. Associations with cauloid and meristem were more specific, while less specific associations were obtained from the old phyloid. In addition, seasonal and geographical differences in the associated communities were observed. Results from 16S rRNA gene libraries supported these findings. Bacterial phylotypes associated with the alga were affiliated with the Alphaproteobacteria (nine phylotypes), Gammaproteobacteria (nine phylotypes) and the Bacteroidetes group (four phylotypes). A number of bacteria associated with other algae and other marine macroorganisms were among the closest relatives of phylotypes associated with L. saccharina. 相似文献
