Islands are bounded ecosystems and serve as excellent laboratories for assessing changes in Biodiversity. Some oceanic islands, such as Madagascar, Bermuda and notably the islands in the Pacific (e.g. Hawaii), are home to unique forms of endemic plants and animals that have evolved in isolation over millions of years. The palaeoecological record indicates that such islands are characterized by waves of extinctions concomitant with colonization by humans. By way of contrast, the biota of the islands of the north Atlantic (Greenland, Iceland and Faroe) do not follow the expected pattern and the few extinctions recorded are very localized. This is not a result of the scale of human impact, which is as great as on other islands, but relates to the virtual lack of endemics. The dearth of endemic forms and the disharmonic nature of these island communities indicates a youthful biota and the operation of severe filters and sweepstakes during colonisation over the last 10,000 years. This paper draws upon an extensive invertebrate fossil record to contrast and examine these spatial and temporal patterns in island Biodiversity.  相似文献

Summary Population density in the lacertid lizardPodarcis lilfordi on the Mediterranean islet of Nitge, Menorca, Balearic Islands, was found to be 12 190 ind · ha-1 (SE, ±2135), exceeding densities reported for other island or mainland lizard populations. Field metabolic rates inP. lilfordi were measured by the doubly labeled water method, allowing estimation of a population metabolizable energy demand of 13.86 MJ · ha-1 · day-1-only 9.8% of that for a theoretical mammal population of the same body mass and density. Energy demand was considerably higher than that estimated for other lizard populations, primarily due to high population density but also because of high individual daily energy expenditure (1255 KJ · day-1; body mass=5.13 g). Field metabolic rates were partitioned into maintenance and activity components by respirometry of captive animals at field body temperatures. Activity metabolism formed the main component (77.4%) of total respiratory metabolism resulting from a combination of long daily activity periods (ca. 12 h), and greatly elevated metabolism during activity (5.7 times greater than resting levels). It is hypothesized that low food availability per individual constrains the time-energy budget of this species, obligating long periods of intense foraging.  相似文献

An alternative hypothesis for the origin of Amazonian bird diversity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aim To determine the origin of the high diversity of birds and other animals and plants in Amazonia. Previous hypotheses are: palaeogeography hypothesis, river hypothesis, river-refuge hypothesis, refuge hypothesis, disturbance-vicariance hypothesis, gradient hypothesis, pest-pressure hypothesis, intermediate disturbance hypothesis, riverine disturbance hypothesis, models of fine-scale habitat heterogeneity, lake hypothesis, and museum hypothesis. Methods At present there is agreement between areas of high species diversity and sites located over 100 m. As these sites would have been islands during a sea-level rise of this value, it was important to determine the probable distribution of these islands in Amazonia during a marine transgression. For that purpose, I traced the 100 m contour line from topographic maps. Results Two broad marine transgressions would have been produced from the Atlantic Ocean via the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. Two very large islands would have been formed to the north of the Amazon River, and other islands and archipelagos would have been formed along the coastal lowlands of Guiana, and at the periphery of the Amazon basin. The area located between the Solimoýes and Negro rivers and in the lower Branco would have been completely covered by the sea. Main conclusions A substantial part of the high diversity of forest and nonforest birds in lowland Amazonia can be hypothetysed to have originated during sea-level rises of about 100 m in the Quaternary and late Tertiary. These transgressions would have fragmented the Amazonian lowland into a large number of true islands and archipelagos, thus favouring active allopatric speciation. Values appreciably higher than 100 m above the present sea-level during previous periods of the Tertiary would have produced segregation of the biota earlier than the Tertiary–Quaternary boundary. Sea-level rises and vegetational changes (by aridity or cooling) would thus have driven the speciation pump, and local disturbances and other processes, would maintain the diversity.  相似文献

Microsatellite markers for the pollinator fig wasp Liporrhopalum tentacularis were developed using genomic libraries enriched for di‐, tri‐ and tetranucleotide repeats. A subset of 31 positive clones was sequenced and primers were designed. Eleven primer pairs produced polymorphic amplification products in L. tentacularis. Eight markers gave unambiguously scorable patterns and were further characterized on 29 individuals collected from different fruits of the dioecious host fig Ficus montana in Indonesia. Three to 19 alleles per locus were detected in this set of samples. The observed heterozygosity ranged between 0.10 and 0.55.  相似文献

Inter-island paleoecological comparisons have provided useful information concerning the role of humans vs. background-level disturbance in tropical ecosystems. Major ecological changes have occurred since human arrival in Madagascar, the West Indies, the Hawaiian Islands, and elsewhere. Prehuman vegetation changes and disturbances have also been documented for many islands. Instructive inter-island similarities and differences have been detected in the chronology, distribution, and extent of human activities, vegetation changes, and biotic extinctions. The earliest stratigraphic proxy evidence for initial human impacts (including increased charcoal particle influx to sediments, first appearance of exotic pollen, increase in ruderal pollen, and paleolimnological evidence for cultural eutrophication of lake waters) generally confirm but sometimes predate the earliest conventional archaeological evidence for human activity. Carefully chosen sites permitting the close integration of palynological, paleontological, and archaeological data from a variety of island settings with differing geographic and historical contingencies can enable investigators to more fully evaluate the importance of a range of human and ecological variables in determining the overall character and dynamics of ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract

The large holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske) was exploited by diverse invertebrate encrusters and borers during the Maastrichtian, both pre- and post-mortem. In life, the specimen described herein was perforated by multiple Oichnus simplex Bromley borings close to the apical system. Each engendered a growth reaction from the echinoid, a mound-like swelling on the external surface of the test with the boring at the centre. These would have been moved away from the apical system as the echinoid grew and inserted new plates apically. Whether this infestation was the product of numerous individual organisms or, less likely, just one organism (gastropod?) that relocated when discouraged by each mound-like swelling is uncertain. Similar growth reactions are known from other echinoderms, but associated with non-penetrative Oichnus paraboloides Bromley.  相似文献
