ObjectiveCancer may be a risk factor for worse outcomes in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infections. However, there is a significant variability across cancer types in the extent of disease burden and modalities of cancer treatment that may impact morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Therefore, we evaluated COVID-19 outcomes in patients with a differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) history.MethodsThis is a retrospective cohort study of patients with a history of DTC and SARS-CoV2 infection from 2 academic Los Angeles healthcare systems. Demographic, thyroid cancer, and treatment data were analyzed for associations with COVID-19 outcomes.ResultsOf 21 patients with DTC and COVID-19, 8 (38.1%) were hospitalized and 2 (9.5%) died from COVID-19. Thyroid cancer initial disease burden and extent, treatment, or current response to therapy (eg, excellent vs incomplete) were not associated with COVID-19 severity in DTC patients. However, older age and the presence of a comorbidity other than DTC were significantly associated with COVID-19 hospitalization (P = .047 and P = .024, respectively). COVID-19–attributed hospitalization and mortality in DTC patients was lower than that previously reported in cancer patients, although similar to patients with nonthyroid malignancies in these centers.ConclusionThese data suggest that among patients with DTC, advanced age and comorbid conditions are significant contributors to the risk of hospitalization from SARS-CoV2 infection, rather than factors associated with thyroid cancer diagnosis, treatment, or disease burden. This multicenter report of clinical outcomes provides additional data to providers to inform DTC patients regarding their risk of COVID-19.  相似文献

Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos colonized the northern California Channel Islands, an archipelago located off the coast of southern California, USA, in the early 1990s, owing in part to the presence of Feral Pigs Sus scrofa. Eagles preyed on piglets and on the endemic Island Fox Urocyon littoralis, driving three endemic subspecies of the Island Fox (Ulsantacruzae, Ulsantarosae and Ullittoralis) toward extirpation. Using stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) measured from feathers and blood of Golden Eagles and from meat and bone of their prey, along with the proportion of prey consumed estimated from nest excavations as informative priors, we show that shifts in Eagle isotopic signatures tracked community reorganization: when pigs and foxes were abundant, Eagles consumed them in higher proportions than other prey; when foxes became scarce owing to Eagle predation, Eagle diet shifted toward pigs, but also diversified to include Common Ravens Corvus corax and seabirds (Larus spp. and Phalacrocorax spp.); and finally, after pigs were eradicated and 35 Golden Eagles had been captured and removed from Santa Cruz Island, a lone remaining pair of Eagles reversed their diet to include more foxes. Our findings reveal that shifts in stable isotope signatures from tissues of an apex predator can be used as a general proxy to monitor changes in the prey community; however, if sample sizes are small, informative priors are both essential and overwhelmingly influential, and changes in abundance of preferred prey may mask or fail to reveal changes in less preferred prey. Given that apex predators are at the top of trophic hierarchies, that they are often important drivers of community structure and that they sample prey continuously from their community, isotopic signatures of their tissues may be useful for monitoring community change.  相似文献

The number eight is considered lucky in Chinese culture, e.g. the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 pm on 8/8/2008. Given the potential for discretion in selecting particular dates of labor induction or scheduled Cesarean section (C-section), we consider whether Chinese-American births in California occur disproportionately on the 8th, 18th, or 28th day of the month. We find 2.3% “too many” Chinese births on these auspicious birth dates, whereas Whites show no corresponding increase. The increase in Chinese births is driven by higher parity C-sections: the number of repeat C-sections is 6% “too high” on auspicious birth dates. Sons born to Chinese parents account for the entire increase; daughter deliveries do not seem to be timed to achieve “lucky” birth dates. We also find avoidance of repeat C-section deliveries on the 4th, 14th, and 24th of the month, considered unlucky in Chinese culture. Finally, we replicate earlier work finding that Friday the 13th delivery dates are avoided and document a particularly large decrease among Chinese. For Whites and Chinese in California, mothers with higher levels of education are particularly likely to avoid delivering on the 13th.  相似文献

The walnut twig beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), vectors a phytopathogenic fungus, Geosmithia morbida Kolařík et al. (Hypocreales), which causes thousand cankers disease (TCD) in walnut (Juglans sp.) and wingnut (Pterocarya sp., both Juglandaceae) trees. We investigated an early point in disease inception in two walnut species – Juglans californica S. Wats. and Juglans major (Torr. ex Sitsgr.) Heller – native to riparian forests of the western USA by comparing P. juglandis flight and landing responses to small-diameter branch sections. Twenty unbaited branch sections (10 each of J. californica and J. major) were presented in a completely randomized design to populations of P. juglandis at the USDA Agricultural Research Service, National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR) Juglans collection located at Wolfskill Experimental Orchards (Winters, CA, USA) and at the California State University, Chico, Agricultural Teaching and Research Center (ATRC, Chico, CA). These assays were carried out within a 4- to 6-year period when weekly flight surveys with aggregation pheromone-baited multiple funnel traps revealed that Pjuglandis flight activity–abundance was higher at the NCGR than at the ATRC. For the landing rate assays, adhesive-coated acetate sheets were wrapped around the branch sections and exchanged weekly. Three assays were completed at the NCGR (assays 1–3), whereas one assay was completed at the ATRC (assay 4). Landing rates on these traps were compared between J. californica and J. major. Two additional assays (5 and 6) were completed at the NCGR to compare responses to branch sections of J. californica and to similarly sized cardboard tubes (negative control). All six assays were completed over a 4-year span during the 4- to 6-year weekly flight survey period. Pooled landing rates of male and female P. juglandis (assays 1–4) demonstrated a preference by both sexes for J. californica over J. major. In assay 5 there was no preference by males or females for J. californica over the negative control, perhaps due to the low flight activity–abundance of P. juglandis during the assay. When repeated at a time of higher flight activity–abundance (assay 6), male and female landing rates on J. californica exceeded those on the negative control. Females of the invasive fruit-tree pinhole borer (an ambrosia beetle), Xyleborinus saxeseni (Ratzeburg), and an invasive bark beetle, Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood (both Coleoptera: Scolytidae), showed relatively higher flight responses than either sex of P. juglandis during most assays, suggesting higher population densities of these two other invasive species at the two orchards or a greater sensitivity to host volatiles. Xyleborinus saxeseni and H. eruditus preferred to land on J. major over J. californica and on J. californica over the negative control. Similarly, an invasive longhorned beetle, Nathrius brevipennis (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), showed a significant preference for J. major over Jcalifornica, but not for J. californica over the negative control. More male N. brevipennis were trapped than females at both study sites [sex ratio ranged from 5:1 (assay 6) to 39:1 (assay 4)], and flight occurred only in the spring and early summer months. Another ambrosia beetle trapped at the NCGR and ATRC, Xyleborus affinis Eichhoff, represented the first records of this species from western North America. In summary, flight responses recorded in some of our assays for P. juglandis and several other subcortical insects on Juglans indicate that host preference by these insects may be determined by long-range olfactory cues that do not involve pheromones.  相似文献

A theory of language is derived for complex systems by contrasting the difference between “hard” systems and “soft” systems. Complexity in a field system made up of atomistic entities is defined by the capability of the atomistic-like entities in soft systems to absorb energy internally into fluid-like, gel-like, dissipative processes rather than to equipartition energy rapidly among all degrees of atomistic freedom. Language then emerges as the “mechanistic” linkages that can catalytically switch or evoke changed atomistic states in such “soft” systems. A note on the source of syntax is also provided.  相似文献

An animal's movement is expected to be governed by an interplay between goals determined by its internal state and energetic costs associated with navigating through the external environment. Understanding this ecological process is challenging when an animal moves in two dimensions and even more difficult for birds that move in a third dimension. To understand the dynamic interaction between the internal state of an animal and the variable external environment, we evaluated hypotheses explaining association of different covariates of movement and the trade-offs birds face as they make behavioural decisions in a fluctuating landscape. We used ~870 000 GPS telemetry data points collected from 68 Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos to test demographic, diel, topographic and meteorological hypotheses to determine (1) the probability that these birds would be in motion and (2), once in motion, their flight speed. A complex and sometimes interacting set of potential internal and external factors determined movement behaviour. There was good evidence that reproductive state, manifested as age, sex and seasonal effects, had a significant influence on the probability of being in motion and, to a lesser extent, on speed of motion. Likewise, movement responses to the external environment were often unexpectedly strong. These responses, to northness of slope, strength of orographic updraft and intensity of solar radiation, were regionally and temporally variable. In contrast to previous work showing the role of a single environmental factor in determining movement decisions, our analyses support the hypothesis that multiple factors simultaneously interact to influence animal movement. In particular they highlighted how movement is influenced by the interaction between the individual's internal reproductive state and the external environment, and that, of the environmental factors, topographic influences are often more relevant than meteorological influences in determining patterns of flight behaviour. Further disentangling of how these internal and externals states jointly affect movement will provide additional insights into the energetic costs of movement and benefits associated with achieving process-driven goals.  相似文献

Understanding genetic structure and gene flow can elucidate the mechanisms of diversification and adaptation in seabirds and help define conservation and management units. From 2012 to 2016, we collected blood and feather samples from 156 Red-billed Tropicbirds (Phaethon aethereus) from seven colonies distributed along the Gulf of California and Mexican tropical Pacific to estimate genetic diversity, genetic structure, and gene flow using microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA; control region) sequences. Nuclear and mtDNA data revealed relatively low or null levels of genetic diversity, respectively, possibly the result of a founder effect in the eastern Pacific followed by a subsequent population expansion. Nuclear data revealed significant genetic structure among the colonies, but the differences were not associated with regional grouping (i.e., Gulf of California vs. Tropical Pacific). Greater gene flow was observed from the tropical Pacific toward the Gulf of California, possibly related to shared dispersal patterns during the non-breeding season (individuals traveling north to reach warm currents with abundant prey). With the exception of one colony in the Mexican tropical Pacific, we found no evidence of recent bottleneck events. Nonetheless, the overall reduced genetic diversity suggests a high intrinsic vulnerability and risk of extinction for this species.  相似文献

Two orders of saturable binding sites for L-T3 were detected on purified rat liver plasma membranes--a high affinity, low capacity binding site with a Kd of 3.2 ± 0.5 nM, and a lower affinity, higher capacity site with a Kd of 220 ± 50 nM. Competition-inhibition studies revealed that both D-T3 and L-T4 (two compounds with lower biological potencies than L-T3) were also less potent than L-T3 in competing for these binding sites. The present studies demonstrate, therefore, the presence of specific thyroid hormone binding sites on rat liver plasma membranes. In addition, they suggest that these sites may have a role both in mediating the known effects of thyroid hormones on membrane functions, and in regulating the entry of thyroid hormones into target cells.  相似文献
