We identify and describe the distribution of 12 genetically distinct malaria parasite lineages over islands and hosts in four common passerine birds in the Lesser Antilles. Combined parasite prevalence demonstrates strong host effects, little or no island effect, and a significant host-times-island interaction, indicating independent outcomes of host-parasite infections among island populations of the same host species. Host- and/or island-specific parasite lineages do not explain these host-parasite associations; rather, individual lineages themselves demonstrate the same type of independent interactions. Unlike overall prevalence, individual parasite lineages show considerable geographic structure (i.e., island effects) as well as species effects indicating that parasite lineages are constrained in their ability to move between hosts and locations. Together, our results suggest an upper limit to the number of host individuals that malaria parasites, as a community, can infect. Within this limit, however, the relative frequency of the different lineages varies reflecting fine scale interactions between host and parasite populations. Patterns of host-parasite associations within this system suggest both historical co-evolution and ecologically dynamic and independent host-parasite interactions.  相似文献

The effects of oxygen exposure on pulmonary and blood non-enzymic antioxidant concentrations was evaluated in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Budgerigars were exposed to acute (3 h), repeated acute (3 exposures each of 3 h) or chronic (72 h) normobaric hyperoxic environments and the pulmonary and plasma concentrations of selected non-enzymic antioxidants, namely glutathione, uric acid, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and carotenoids were assayed. With increasing duration of oxygen exposure, the ratio of oxidised to reduced glutathione was significantly increased, while the concentrations of uric acid, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol and carotenoids were significantly reduced, especially following chronic oxygen exposure. Following acute and repeated acute exposure, alteration in glutathione concentrations and reduction in alpha-tocopherol concentrations indicated oxygen stress. Following chronic exposure, depletion of non-enzymic antioxidants indicated exhaustion of these protective mechanisms and progression from oxygen stress to oxygen toxicity.  相似文献

A review of existing records and the scientific literature was conducted for occurrences of avian diseases affecting free-ranging avifauna within the Salton Sea ecosystem. The period for evaluation was 1907 through 1999. Records of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Biological Survey and the scientific literature were the data sources for the period of 1907–1939. The narrative reports of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge Complex and the epizootic database of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center were the primary data sources for the remainder of the evaluation. The pattern of avian disease at the Salton Sea has changed greatly over time. Relative to past decades, there was a greater frequency of major outbreaks of avian disease at the Salton Sea during the 1990s than in previous decades, a greater variety of disease agents causing epizootics, and apparent chronic increases in the attrition of birds from disease. Avian mortality was high for about a decade beginning during the mid-1920s, diminished substantially by the 1940s and was at low to moderate levels until the 1990s when it reached the highest levels reported. Avian botulism (Clostridium botulinum type C) was the only major cause of avian disease until 1979 when the first major epizootic of avian cholera (Pasteurella multocidia) was documented. Waterfowl and shorebirds were the primary species affected by avian botulism. A broader spectrum of species have been killed by avian cholera but waterfowl have suffered the greatest losses. Avian cholera reappeared in 1983 and has joined avian botulism as a recurring cause of avian mortality. In 1989, avian salmonellosis (Salmonella typhimurium) was first diagnosed as a major cause of avian disease within the Salton Sea ecosystem and has since reappeared several times, primarily among cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis). The largest loss from a single epizootic occurred in 1992, when an estimated 155000 birds, primarily eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis), died from an undiagnosed cause. Reoccurrences of that unknown malady have continued to kill substantial numbers of eared grebes throughout the 1990s. The first major epizootic of type C avian botulism in fish-eating birds occurred in 1996 and killed large numbers of pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis & P. erythrorhynchos). Avian botulism has remained as a major annual cause of disease in pelicans. In contrast, the chronic on-Sea occurrence of avian botulism in waterfowl and shorebirds of previous decades was seldom seen during the 1990s. Newcastle disease became the first viral disease to cause major bird losses at the Salton Sea when it appeared in the Mullet Island cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) breeding colony during 1997 and again during 1998.  相似文献

The toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and related compounds in birds has been well-established in laboratory and field studies. Observed effects of TCDD and related chemicals in birds include developmental deformities, reproductive failure, liver damage, wasting syndrome and death. The mechanism of action of TCDD at the cellular level is primarily mediated through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). However, the mechanism of toxic action at the organism level is poorly understood. In this study, the role of radical oxygen species and mixed function oxidize (MFO; cytochrome P4501A) in the mechanism of TCDD-induced abnormalities and lethality were examined by co-injecting radical scavengers and an MFO inhibitor (piperonyl butoxide). Egg injection studies were conducted to determine if in ovo TCDD exposure can cause oxidative stress in white leghorn chicken eggs. Test agents were injected into the yolk prior to incubation. Treatments included TCDD (150 ng/kg), triolein (vehicle control), and various co-treatments including MnTBAP (a mimetic of superoxide dismutase), piperonyl butoxide, piroxicam, vitamin A acetate, and vitamin E succinate. Phenytoin, which is known to cause teratogenesis through oxidative stress was used as a positive control. Eggs were incubated until hatch and then the following parameters were assessed: mortality, hatching success, abnormalities, weights for whole body, liver, heart and brain, and biochemical endpoints for oxidative stress. As a measure of exposure, concentrations of TCDD and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities were measured in tissues of hatchlings. While greater mortality and abnormalities were observed in the TCDD treatment groups, the number of the replicates were not great enough to detect statistically significant differences in abnormality rates for the co-treatments. Some of the observed developmental abnormalities included edema, liver necrosis and bill, eye and limb deformities with TCDD treatments, bill and brain deformities with phenytoin treatments, eye abnormalities with Vitamin E treatments, and abnormal feather pigmentation with piperonyl butoxide treatments.  相似文献

Vertebrates exhibit a variety of sex determining mechanisms which fall broadly into two classes: environmental or genetic. In birds and mammals sex is determined by a genetic mechanism. In mammals males are the heterogametic sex (XY) with the Y chromosome acting as a dominant determiner of sex due to the action of the testis-determining factor, SRY. In birds females are the heterogametic sex (ZW); however, it is not known whether the W chromosome carries a dominant ovary-determining gene, or whether Z chromosome dosage determines sex. Using an experimental approach, which assumes only that the sex-determining event in birds is accompanied by sex-specific changes in gene expression, we have identified a novel gene, ASW (Avian Sex-specific W-linked). The putative protein for ASW is related to the HIT (histidine triad) family of proteins. ASW shows female-specific expression in genital ridges and maps to the chicken W chromosome. In addition, we show that, with the exception of ratites, ASW is linked to the W chromosome in each of 17 bird species from nine different families of the class Aves. We determined the role of bird dispersal in seed and seedling dynamics of the tree Kalopanax pictus from 7 years of observing seed rain and seedling emergence in a broad-leaved deciduous forest in central Japan. We also performed an experiment on the influence of seed pulp on germination of seeds of K. pictus. Seeds of this species can lie dormant for several years, and this causes rather constant yearly seedling emergence in spite of irregular seed production. The spatial distribution of the seedlings that emerged each year (maximum distance from nearest conspecific seed-bearing tree of 90 m) was wider than that of gravity-dispersed seeds (max. distance of 37 m), suggesting seed dispersal by birds in winter. Emerged seedling densities at sites over 20 m from the nearest conspecific seed-bearing tree were highest in the spring of 1991, about half a year after the largest seed fall of the observation period. However, emerged seedling densities within 20 m from seed-bearing trees were highest in 1992, 1.5 years after the largest seed fall. These field observations may be explained by the experimental results on the effects of seed pulp on germination. Intact seeds germinate slowly at low germination rates, while seeds without seed pulp germinate quickly at high germination rates. Fallen seeds with seed pulp thus appear to form a seed bank near seed sources (temporal dispersal), while seeds scattered by birds appear to increase the possibility of reaching the present safe sites in distant areas with quick germination (spatial dispersal).  相似文献

Although substantial information is available regarding the fatty acid composition of lipids of the yolk and of the developing tissues of the chicken embryo, there is little knowledge on this topic for other avian species. The aim of the present study was to compare the yolk and embryonic tissue fatty acid profiles for a species selecting its food in the wild (the lesser black backed gull) with one fed on a standard commercial diet (the commercially reared pheasant). The fatty acid compositions of the yolk lipids were determined, and major differences were observed between the two species. In particular, the phospholipid of the gull yolk was enriched in 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 (18.8 and 7.1%, respectively, by weight of total fatty acids) in comparison with the pheasant (4.0 and 4.1%, respectively). The fatty acid compositions of the embryonic tissues were determined using eggs incubated in the laboratory. For the liver and heart, the fatty acid composition of the lipids in the two species reflected the initial yolk composition, with the gull tissue lipids generally containing higher proportions of 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 than those of the pheasant. In contrast, the fatty acid profiles of the brain phospholipid were essentially identical in the two species, with 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 comprising approximately 9 and 17%, respectively, of total fatty acids in both cases.  相似文献

This study was conduced to assess the effects of a one time embryonic exposure to p,p'-DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene; DDE) on the reproductive development and function in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Embryos were exposed at day one of incubation to either 20 or 40 microg DDE or a sesame oil vehicle control (injection volume=20 microl). Onset of puberty, gonadal histopathology, sperm motility, cloacal gland size, and male copulatory behavior were assessed in adults. DDE accelerated onset of puberty in females and reduced male reproductive behaviors. Gonadal morphology and sperm motility appeared to be unaffected. Results from this study provide evidence that the neuroendocrine system may be more sensitive and less resilient to embryonic exposure to contaminants than traditional measures of reproductive success following contaminant exposure in adults. This study further supports the inclusion of behavioral assessments in toxicity tests.  相似文献

Holte O C C+ 。将重组毒株分别感染 Tn5 B1 细胞,并进行 S D S P A G E 与 Westernblot 检测。结果表明, Tn N P V( X3/4) S1 . Holte O C C+ 在感染的细胞中高效表达了 S1 蛋白, S D S P A G E 凝胶薄层色谱分析结果显示,感染病毒后72 h S1 蛋白的表达量占细胞内总蛋白量的35 .8 % ,而 Tn N P V( X3) S1 . Holte O C C+ 感染的细胞内检测不出 S1 蛋白。经分析认为这一差异主要来自 S1 基因翻译起始位点及其附近的周围环境。  相似文献
