The site of action of the postemergence graminicide, diclofop-methyl (DM), in susceptible plants is possibly the plasmalemma. Indole-acetic acid (IAA)- and fusicoccin (FC)-induced net proton excretion in Avena coleoptiles was inhibited by the free acid, diclofop. However, net proton excretion recovered within 2 h when 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acid (2,4-D) was added simultaneously with diclofop. Diclofop depolarized the membrane potential (Em) within 12 min but the Em recovered within 30 min when diclofop was removed and replaced with either IAA or 2,4-D. The inhibition of IAA-induced coleoptile growth by DM and the membrane effects of its acid, diclofop, were partially reversed by 2,4-D if it was added shortly after treatment of the tissue. These results are consistent with the reversal of DM injury in whole plants with 2,4-D.  相似文献

Summary The objective of this study was to determine whether infection of Avena fatua L. plants by the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith could influence the vigor of the offspring generation. Two experiments demonstrated that mycorrhizal infection of the maternal generation had slight but persistent positive effects on offspring leaf expansion in the early stages of growth. In two other experiments, mycorrhizal infection of mother plants had several long lasting effects on their offspring. Offspring produced by mycorrhizal mother plants had greater leaf areas, shoot and root nutrient contents and root:shoot ratios compared to those produced by non-mycorrhizal mother plants. Moreover, mycorrhizal infection of mother plants significantly reduced the weight of individual seeds produced by offspring plants while it increased the P concentrations of the seeds and the number of seeds per spikelet produced by offspring plants. The effects of mycorrhizal infections of maternal plants on the vigor and performance of offspring plants were associated with higher seed phosphorus contents but generally lighter seeds. The results suggest that mycorrhizal infection may influence plant fitness by increasing offspring vigor and offspring reproductive success in addition to previously reported increases in maternal fecundity.  相似文献

Modeling of soil systems is an essential approach to discussions of the historical dimensions of soil sustainability, but as yet there has been no formal testing and application of such models. In this paper we first test the ability of the CENTURY agroecosystem model to predict soil organic carbon levels in anthropogenic plaggen soils from ethnographic and historical land management information of manuring practices on the Shetland island of Papa Stour. Observations suggest that the model makes accurate predictions and can be used to develop and test hypothetical land management scenarios. Results suggest that within historic time the arable areas of Papa Stour were manured at a level above that required to maintain soil organic carbon levels, and consequently the hill-land source of organic material was overexploited with no real apparent gain. Modeled evidence suggests that short-term observations of soil organic carbon levels would indicate a greater degree of manure application than was actually required over the longer term. Successful use of the CENTURY model in this historic context suggests that it may be applicable to questions of soil sustainability in other areas of the North Atlantic region.  相似文献

Abstract A series of fluence-response curves for the binding of phytochrome to membranes in the absence of divalent cations, as described by Watson & Smith (1982), were constructed to demonstrate that the response obeys the law of reciprocity. Analysis of the binding of Pfr (the far-red-absorbing form of phytochrome) showed that two Pfr molecules bind to the membrane for each Pr (the form with an absorption maximum in the red) photoconverted to Pfr in the intrinsic membrane-bound phytochrome pool. Using this stoichiometry we have been able to model the binding curve of Pr and match the binding data. Pr binding can be simulated if Pr binds only as a consequence of the binding of Pfr, i.e. when Pfr is part of a Pr: Pfr dimer. The enrichment of the membranes with Pfr as a result of the binding of Pfr was also accurately simulated. There is no binding cooperativity. Phytochrome binding is a low-fluence response and the possibility that it has physiological significance as a mediator of phytochrome action is discussed.  相似文献

Both ecological and molecular methods have been applied to the study of locally adapted populations. While Clausen et al . (1940) were the pioneers of field transplant studies, the work of Robert Allard et al . on the invasive species Avena barbata is a classic example of using molecular evidence to infer adaptation via correlation of particular alleles with environmental gradients. In a new study published in this issue of Molecular Ecology, Latta (2009) combines ecological methods (reciprocal environment studies) with quantitative genetic techniques (recombinant inbred lines and quantitative trait analysis) to provide new evidence for local adaptation within this well known system. The conclusions are orthogonal to the original hypothesis, and instead, provide evidence that factors other than local adaptation were likely responsible for the historically observed patterns. This new evidence suggests that one ecotype is generally more fit than the other in both a moist and a dry environment, and accordingly, it appears to be increasing in frequency in historically surveyed populations.  相似文献
