We investigated the effect of short-term exposure to cadmium and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid on the digestive physiology of Daphnia magna and the consequences for the bioenergetics of the organism. In both cases, ingestion was more drastically reduced compared to digestive enzyme activity. Furthermore a differential shift in catabolism was noted: in general polysaccharidases were less affected than the enzymes responsible for protein and lipid digestion. Comparison of the ‘1 h in vivo fluorescence’ criterion (Janssen & Persoone, 1993) with the ingestion and digestive enzyme activity revealed that this rapid screening assay should be considered as a quantification of ingestion inhibition rather than a methodology assessing digestive enzyme inhibition. Understanding rules of resource allocation within individuals is helpful in explaining population dynamics. This is particularly the case under the conditions of resource limitation that are commonly experienced by zooplankton. Here, we evaluate assumptions underlying models of resource allocation in Daphnia and test the predictions of two models of response to starvation.
We also test the predictions of two simple models concerning the mechanisms of egg provisioning in Daphnia magna. Our results: (1) demonstrate that provisioning is discontinuous, occurring over a discrete period of the instar; (2) support the hypothesis that egg production occurs in a serial fashion; (3) show that Daphnia magna responds to starvation by ceasing egg production but that there is an increase in mean size of eggs provisioned during the instar, prior to starvation; and (4) broadly support predictions that the response of Daphnia to starvation is an instantaneous cessation of reproduction but that there is a time lag before death.  相似文献

Populations of Avena fatua were established in crops of spring barley and winter wheat, and relationships derived between yield and other crop parameters, and weed density. Competitive effects of A. fatua, which were similar to those found in other countries, were greatest at low crop densities. Crop head numbers were reduced proportionately less than crop yield, indicating that competition was affecting other yield components. Competition increased the proportion of thin grain of barley but not of wheat. Competition had little effect on the moisture content and the contamination of the harvested grain by A. fatua, suggesting that at threshold populations these factors are unlikely to be of economic significance. It was concluded that at average crop densities, low infestations of A. fatua are likely to result in cereal yield losses in the region of 1 % for each A. fatua plant m-2.  相似文献

Binding of the radio-iodinated 124-kDa oat ( Avena sativa L. cv. Garry) phytochrome to liposomes and chloroplasts was investigated as a model system in order to understand the molecular affinity of phytochrome toward cellular organelles in plants. The binding of intact (124 kDa) phytochrome to liposomes and chloroplasts is hydrophobic in nature, as in the case of the degraded (118/114 kDa) phytochrome, but electrostatic interactions play a greater role in the intact phytochrome. The physiologically active Pfr form of the intact phytochrome showed a binding preference over the inactive Pr form with neutral liposomes and chloroplasts. However, the Pfr form of intact phytochrome exhibits smaller binding preference than the Pfr form of degraded phytochrome over their respective Pr forms (see Kim, I.-S. and Song, P.-S. 1981, Biochemistry 20: 5482–5489, for degraded phytochrome binding). These results indicate that the 6/10 kDa N-terminus segment, which is lost in the degraded phytochrome, plays an important role in determining the protein surface properties of the intact phytochrome. A competitive binding study on phytochrome also suggested that the Pfr form had a greater binding affinity for chloroplasts than the Pr form. However, the physiological activity of the Pfr form may not be explained simply by the observed difference in binding affinity between the two forms of phytochrome.  相似文献

The growth and development of field-grown Avena fatua plants were studied for autumn and spring sowings in two consecutive years. The duration of various growth stages from sowing until anthesis was quantified in terms of thermal time (accumulated degree days) or photothermal time (degree days modified by photoperiod). Base temperatures and photoperiods for developmental phases were estimated as those which minimised the coefficient of variation among sowing dates. Relationships were derived between leaf emergence, canopy height, plant leaf area, and photothermal time. Stem extension and flowering occurred earlier in autumn-sown plants than spring-sown plants. Autumn-sown plants produced more leaves on the main stem, and had greater leaf area and above-ground biomass at anthesis than spring-sown plants.  相似文献

The Commelina yellow mottle virus (CoYMV) infects the monocot weed Commelina diffusa. The objective of this study was to investigate the transgene expression conferred by the CoYMV promoter in a monocot species. Friable, embryogenic oat (Avena sativa L.) tissue cultures were stably transformed with the CoYMV promoter fused to the coding region of E. coli β-glucuronidase (uidA, GUS). Developmental and tissue-specific expression of the CoYMV-GUS construct was investigated in regenerated plants and their progeny. Histochemical GUS staining was primarily localized in the vascular tissues of shoots, leaves, floral bracts and in roots. While ovaries stained intensely, no staining was detected in anthers or the endosperm in mature seed. The scutellum of mature and germinating seed exhibited GUS activity. Predation of annual grass weed seeds in arable field margins   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Seeds of three species of annual grass weeds (Alopecurus myosuroides, Avena fatua and Bromus sterilis) were placed in field margins around arable fields in a randomised block split-plot design experiment. The field margin vegetation was either sown or naturally regenerated and either cut or uncut. The seeds were either placed in cages designed to exclude small mammals and birds or were uncaged. The proportion of seeds removed was monitored on 10 occasions and mean seed loss was analysed. In general, a greater proportion of weed seeds was removed from uncaged trays in uncut swards, suggesting predation by small mammals, which inhabit tall grass. This effect was mainly due to removal of seeds of the two large-seeded species (A. fatua and B. sterilis), with A. fatua being especially favoured. It is therefore likely that small mammals play a role in the population dynamics of major crop weeds by feeding on their seeds in field margins, especially when these are dense and uncut.  相似文献

We have used a highly sensitive immunological tissue print technique to study cell- and tissue-specific expression of heterologous genes in transgenic plants. Primary polyclonal antibodies, raised against legumin of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and 12S globulin of oat (Avena sativa L.) were used to localize these proteins in transgenic tobacco seeds in a streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase assay in combination with biotinylated secondary antibodies producing a higher sensitivity (by several amplification steps) of the assay. Both storage protein genes were found to be expressed in a specific pattern. While legumin is preferentially accumulated in certain parts of the embryo, the oat legumin-type globulin is restricted to the endosperm. The applied technique is highly sensitive with a resolution power down to the singlecell level and allows rapid screening of large numbers of samples.  相似文献
