In the presence of urea, type I collagen could form a gel with crosslinks with microbial transglutaminase (MTGase). Collagen self-assembly was accelerated with the addition of MTGase. The proportion of reconstructed collagen fibrils was raised with the addition of MTGase. MTGase-treated collagen gel remained gelled at high temperatures at which collagen denatured. By treatment with MTGase, collagen could form the gel under impossible condition to collagen self-assembly, and that denaturation temperature was raised.  相似文献

Study of plankton sample from the northeast Atlantic has revealed an exceptional specimen of Ceratolithus cristatus. This consists of a rostratus-type ceratolith surrounded by a collapsed coccosphere of delicate hoop-coccoliths and a partial outer collapsed coccosphere of nishidae-type planoliths. This provides the final direct evidence needed to support the earlier hypothesis that these three calcareous structures are all provided by the single species Ceratolithus cristatus. It appears likely that this species has a complex life-cycle.  相似文献

Reciprocal herkogamy is known to promote intermorph-pollination in distylous species, which are generally self- and intramorph-incompatible. Legitimate crossing rates are also influenced by pollinator foraging strategy, which determines most of the pollen flow in natural populations. This study reports on the floral morphology, compatibility relations and pollination biology of Psychotria nuda (Cham. and Schltdl.) Wawra in the Atlantic rain forest, southeastern Brazil, based on floral measurements, hand-pollination experiments and focal observation of floral visitors. It was found that P. nuda does not present an exactly reciprocal herkogamy, however, this morphological trait in P. nuda is as good as in most of Rubiaceae. Reproductive experiments showed compatibility relations similar to those frequently observed in distylous species. The hummingbirds Ramphodon naevius and females of Thalurania glaucopis were the main pollinators of P. nuda, presenting the traplining foraging strategy, which seems to maximize intermorph crosses in P. nuda flowers. These hummingbirds pollinated P. nuda flowers sequentially throughout the flowering period.  相似文献

Mycophagy is a relatively rare behavior in primates and has only been recorded in five callitrichid species. Here, we present data on the feeding ecology of a free‐ranging group of Callithrix flaviceps, which was studied in the Augusto Ruschi Biological Reserve, Southeastern Brazil, in 2008. In contrast with other marmosets, which are typically gummivorous, the study group was predominantly mycophagous–insectivorous, with fungi corresponding to 64.8% of total feeding records, and gum (6.1%) and fruit (3.3%) together providing only a minor part of the diet. Prey corresponded to 25.8% of the group's diet. The fungi (Mycocitrus spp.) consumed by the marmosets were found attached to the stems of Merostachys bamboo. As the animal component of the group's diet was similar to that recorded in studies of other marmosets, we propose that fungi were exploited primarily as a substitute for plant material, in particular exudates. This highly mycophagous diet may be determined by two principal factors: (1) the abundance of fungi within the study area, and (2) the avoidance of bark gouging, for which C. flaviceps may be less specialized than most other marmosets. These conclusions are supported by comparisons with other marmoset groups, which indicate an ecological specialization for mycophagy in C. flaviceps, and that the species will resort to gummivory in habitats where fungi are scarce. The Indo-West Pacific (IWP), from South Africa in the western Indian Ocean to the western Pacific Ocean, contains some of the most biologically diverse marine habitats on earth, including the greatest biodiversity of chondrichthyan fishes. The region encompasses various densities of human habitation leading to contrasts in the levels of exploitation experienced by chondrichthyans, which are targeted for local consumption and export. The demersal chondrichthyan, the zebra shark, Stegostoma fasciatum , is endemic to the IWP and has two current regional International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List classifications that reflect differing levels of exploitation: 'Least Concern' and 'Vulnerable'. In this study, we employed mitochondrial ND4 sequence data and 13 microsatellite loci to investigate the population genetic structure of 180 zebra sharks from 13 locations throughout the IWP to test the concordance of IUCN zones with demographic units that have conservation value. Mitochondrial and microsatellite data sets from samples collected throughout northern Australia and Southeast Asia concord with the regional IUCN classifications. However, we found evidence of genetic subdivision within these regions, including subdivision between locations connected by habitat suitable for migration. Furthermore, parametric F ST analyses and Bayesian clustering analyses indicated that the primary genetic break within the IWP is not represented by the IUCN classifications but rather is congruent with the Indonesian throughflow current. Our findings indicate that recruitment to areas of high exploitation from nearby healthy populations in zebra sharks is likely to be minimal, and that severe localized depletions are predicted to occur in zebra shark populations throughout the IWP region.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of a major QTL for resistance to IPN in salmon on performance and production traits. The traits studied were related to growth, fillet and gutted yields, and fat content. Two different analyses were performed: (1) regression of the phenotypic data of the production traits on the predicted number of resistant IPN‐QTL alleles in individuals and (2) a variance component analysis using the (co)variance matrix calculated at the putative location of the QTL. No significant effect of the QTL was detected on any of the traits investigated by either method. The result has important practical implications in that it encourages the use of MAS to reduce the risks and impact of IPN mortality.  相似文献

The distribution of NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate)-diaphorase in nerve cells in the gastrointestinal tract has been investigated and compared in three fish species representing different evolutionary branches. In mammals, NADPH-diphorase is identical to nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and can, in the presence of NADPH, reduce the dye nitroblue tetrazolium, resulting in a blue product. Using this method, we have found numerous NADPH-diaphorase-containing nerve cells in the myenteric plexus of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) but none in the hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). In the cod, nerve fibres were sparsely stained, whereas in the dogfish, they formed a dense pattern of fibre bundles. Double-staining for NADPH-diaphorase and the neuropolypeptides VIP (vasoactive intestinal polypeptide) and PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide) revealed three separate populations designated VIP/NADPH, VIP/- and NADPH/-. The majority but not all of the NADPH-diaphorase-positive cells also showed VIP or PACAP immunoreactivity and vice versa. The presence of NADPH-diaphorase in neurons and the distribution of these neurons in the gastrointestinal tract of the two species indicate a physiological role for nitric oxide in the control of gut motility.  相似文献

Summary We use contemporary life history theory to analyze parental decisions concerned with the defense of offspring, and with the provisioning of offspring in the presence of risk. In achieving the optimal level of parental investment, the parent faces a tradeoff between present and future reproductive success. Our models, which are based on stochastic dynamic programming, lead to predictions of the following kind: (i) offspring will be defended more vigorously as they grow older; (ii) long-lived species will accept fewer risks in caring for offspring than short-lived species; (iii) parents living in permanently riskier environments will defend their offspring more vigorously than parents in less risky environments; (iv) however, temporary increases in risk will result in temporarily less vigorous defense and provisioning of offspring. The models also show that parents and their offspring have different conceptions of the optimal level of parental investment. The flexibility of our modeling approach as a method of analyzing facultative behavior is also emphasized. Finally, we apply the methods of this paper to analyze fledging behavior of Atlantic puffins.  相似文献
