Prehistoric sites testifying to human presence older than one million years in Europe are rare, and in the current state of knowledge, the oldest of them have been dated to around 1.4–1.5 Ma. The Vallonnet cave at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Mediterranean border, is one of the oldest sites in France to have yielded evidence of human activity: a lithic assemblage of about a hundred pieces and traces of butchery on bones of an Epivillafranchian fauna. The archaeological levels of this small cave were recently dated between 1.1 and 1.2 Ma by U-Pb correlated with paleomagnetic data. The site was occupied alternately by large carnivores that used it as a den or a lair, and by hominins that stayed there briefly in bivouac. The lithic remains are mainly percussion tools, shaped pebbles, flakes and cores, whose raw materials are local, or even semi-local, and on the whole not very diversified with mainly limestone, and to a lesser extent sandstone, quartzite, flint and quartz. This assemblage is attributed to a Mode 1 technology (Oldowayen), among which macro-tools (hammerstones, shaped and fractured pebbles) are found alongside rarer elements resulting from debitage operating chains aimed at producing sharp-edged flakes, very rarely retouched. The bipolar-on-anvil flaking technique could be identified from the characteristics of some artifacts. Several refitting flakes on shaped pebbles or percussion tools attest to knapping and percussion activities in the cave. Hominins consumed the remains of large herbivore carcasses, as attested by the presence of cutting and fracturing marks on some bones. The presence of a freshwater source in the immediate vicinity, and the knapping and butchering activities here therefore document the subsistence behavior of Lower Pleistocene human groups, certainly in competition with the carnivores present.  相似文献

Giardia duodenalis is a widespread parasite of mammalian species, including humans. Fecal samples from sporadic human clinical cases of giardiasis in Western Australia were analysed at two loci; 18S rRNA and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), and G. duodenalis assemblage B isolates were identified in 75% of isolates. Sequence analyses of 124 isolates at the 18S rRNA locus identified 93 isolates as assemblage B and 31 as assemblage A. Analyses of 109 isolates at the gdh locus identified 44 as B3, 38 as B4 and 27 were A2. Infection with Giardia was highest amongst children <5 years of age, with >56% of infections in this age group. The majority of the isolates were from rural areas (91/124) compared with urban areas (33/124). The assemblage A isolates were completely homogenous genetically at the gdh locus, while assemblage B isolates showed variability at the nucleotide but not at the amino acid level at this locus. Some of the assemblage B3 and B4 subtypes identified in humans were previously identified in marsupials in Australia and in a fox, indicating potential zoonotic transmission.  相似文献

For a two-way classification with rows (= genotypes) and columns (= environments) relationships between Kendall's coefficient of concordance W and a nonparametric measure of phenotypic stability S (= variance among the ranks over the environments) are presented. This provides an analogy between Wricke's ecovalence and the sum of squares of genotype-environment interactions on the parametric side and S and Kendall's W on the nonparametric side: S is a genotype's contribution to the discordance (1 — W) in the data set, while Wricke's ecovalence is a genotype's contribution to the genotype-environment interaction sum of squares. Genotype x environment interactions may lead, but must not necessarily lead to non-identical rank orders of the genotypes in different environments (crossover versus noncrossover interactions). When does interaction become rank interaction? The similarity of the rank orders (measured by W) can be approximately expressed by the ratio of the genotypic variance and sum of genotypic variance plus residual variance. For the consistency of rankings this relation leads to an approximate test of significance which is based on variance components. Finally, a numerical example is given using grain yield data of 20 genotypes (varieties) of winter wheat in 10 environments (locations) from German registration trials.  相似文献

A concordance analysis was used to study the simultaneous influence of several environmental data sets on chaetodontid (butterflyfish) distributions. This multivariate and multitable method enabled the correlation of three types of benthic characteristics (mineral substratum, coverage of structural species and large echinoderms) with butterflyfish abundances in two bays of the urban centre of Nouméa (New Caledonia). The first concordance axis was related to a gradient in the coverage of branching corals. This disturbance gradient compared damaged reef areas dominated by long‐spined sea urchins to areas with an extensive coverage of branching corals. The abundance of corallivorous chaetodontids was related to this gradient, supporting the view of corals as a food and shelter source for these fishes. The second concordance axis was interpreted as a gradient of heterogeneity in the coverage of benthic life‐forms. The abundance of omnivorous chaetodontids was related to this gradient. Thus, the concordance axes defined two key components of habitat structure that were related to the entire fish community structure.  相似文献

A preliminary comparative study of pinniped bone assemblages from Late Holocene archaeological sites and from present day deposits on the Atlantic coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is presented. The aim is to assess the properties distinguishing bone accumulations of these marine mammals formed by human activity and those formed by natural processes. The evidence suggests that anthropic assemblages differ from natural ones in a number of properties, such as anatomical composition and integrity and of the age profile of the individuals represented, and they look alike in other respects, such as bone specimen fragmentation.  相似文献

Some of the earliest studies of phylogenetic concordance involve native plants from the Pacific Northwest where many taxa showed clear genetic breaks between southern and northern populations. To test whether similar breaks also occur in invertebrate species with low dispersal capacities, genetic data from two mitochondrial genes are assembled for individuals of the arionid slug Prophysaon coeruleum throughout the species' range. Bayesian inference revealed three major clades and a total of eight subclades. It is argued that the demographic and genealogical past of P. coeruleum has resulted in a deep and shallow phylogeographical structure. The deep structure is at least 2.6-5.9 million years old and therefore clearly predates the Pleistocene period. Superimposed on this structure is a shallow structure that is most likely less than 2 million years old and probably the result of Pleistocene perturbations. Molecular analyses revealed that the three known colour traits in P. coeruleum do not represent monophyletic groups and that they do not match the patterns of genetic structure found. It is argued that the colour traits are perhaps a response to different levels of UV-radiation. The study adds to the increasing evidence that the phylogeographical structure of some taxa is more complex than previously thought. Moreover, it shows that genealogical concordance should not be deduced from phylogeographical patterns alone but should be based on an understanding of timing and causes of historical processes that lead to those patterns.  相似文献

The New Zealand fernPolystichum richardii is shown to comprise at least two evolutionary lineages. A narrow-scaled morphological form and a wide-scaled morphological form are recognised. Principal Component Analysis of a set of frond, soral and spore characters supports this morphological separation. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting shows that the two morphological forms are also genetically distinct. They are sympatric across a broad area of central New Zealand, and often grow together without apparent ecological separation at the local level. Both are known to form sterile hybrids withP. vestitum, suggesting that both morphological forms ofP. richardii are at least partially outcrossing. The morphological and genetic distinctiveness of these two morphological forms, combined with their sympatric distributions and their (at least partially) outcrossing mating systems, merits their recognition as separate species.  相似文献

The positive effects of biodiversity on the functioning of ecosystems are well demonstrated in laboratory microcosms but the precise mechanisms underlying higher ecosystem process rates in natural assemblages are less well understood. We investigated, under semi-natural conditions (field enclosures), the potentially interactive effects of species identity and trophic function (i.e., feeding guild) on consumer growth, using a fish assemblage in a tropical stream. We tested the relative importance of species identity and trophic function on consumer growth by placing 2 fish of either (i) the same species, (ii) different species but of similar trophic function, or (iii) different species of different trophic functions in each of 72 stream enclosures for 48 days and measuring biomass change, individual diet composition and behavior. We predicted that if functional diversity had a larger impact than species diversity, then fish growth would be highest for pairs of species from different functional groups (i.e., those with the highest diet complementarity), intermediate for different species within a guild, and lowest for the same species (those with the lowest complementarity and highest niche overlap), such that functional variation between species in different guilds would exceed functional differences within guilds. Our results show that functional heterogeneity rather than species diversity per se had the greatest impact on food resources used complementarily, leading to higher biomass accrual. Mechanistically, higher growth rates were driven by concomitant increases in resource intake and reductions in antagonistic interactions. Together, these results underscore the importance of functional diversity on macroconsumer production in natural assemblages.  相似文献
