An 8-year study was conducted on the island of Crete in order to identify airborne ascospores and to determine their seasonal pattern. A Burkard 7-day, volumetric spore-trap was continuously operated in the city of Irakleion – located in the center of the island – from 1994 through 2001. Relatively „high” ascospore counts (20 – 48 spores/m 3) were obtained from mid-spring through summer, while the rest of the year exhibited lower activity (8–16 spores/m3). The predominant ascospores identified were those of Leptosphaeria and Chaetomium; their concentrations varied from 1 or 2 spores up to a few dozens of spores/m3. Other spores encountered sporadically were: Ascobolus, Endophragmiella, Didymella, Diatrypaceae, Leptosphaerulina, Massaria, Pleospora, Sporormiella, Xylaria. The mean daily concentration of all identified ascospores was 30/m3 for the entire study period, corresponding to 13.9% of the total fungal load. Ascospores have been recognized as important inhalant allergens and have been implicated as contributing to symptoms of both rhinitis and asthma.  相似文献

We investigated the Botanophila (Diptera: Anthomyiidae)–Epichloë (Ascomycetes: Clavicipitaceae) interaction in cultivated Festuca spp. (fine fescue) in Oregon in western USA. Epichloë spp. are endophytic fungi of grasses in the subfamily Pooideae. They develop a felt‐like stroma on the surface of grass culms and a dense mycelium within the culms that typically prevents seed head emergence. As a result, seed yields are suppressed, and hence the disease is known as choke. Studies of Epichloë spp. on wild grasses indicate that the fly–fungus interaction is an obligatory mutualism. During oviposition, Botanophila transfers Epichloë spermatia between stromata of opposite mating types, and the perithecia that develop after fungal fertilization serve as food for Botanophila larvae. In the current study, we surveyed 19 cultivated fields of Festuca spp. in Oregon, and observed choke caused by Epichloë festucae Leuchtmann, Schardl and Siegl in 10 of these. However, perithecia were observed in only four fields, and on only 1.0–2.6% of stromata. Perithecial development was also low, and rarely covered 50% of the stroma surface. Despite the absence or low frequency of fertilized stromata, Botanophila lobata Collin larvae were present in all choke‐infested fields. Infestation levels ranged from 2.5 to 70.7%, based on an examination of 175–200 stromata from each field. Only eight (= 2%) of the 450 stromata with B. lobata had perithecia, and the greater majority of B. lobata larvae completed development and exited from unfertilized stromata. This is the first report of the B. lobata–E. festucae association in the USA, and of B. lobata larvae developing successfully on unfertilized Epichloë stromata. The average pupal weight (0.0032 g) did not differ significantly from pupae (0.0030 g) originating from larvae that had developed on fertilized stromata of E. typhina on Dactylis glomerata in a neighboring field. This result indicates that in cultivated fine fescue fields in Oregon, B. lobata forages on E. festucae, but fly development is not dependent on the fertilized stromata of Epichloë.  相似文献

Data on macrofungal diversity and distribution patterns were compiled for major geographical regions of the world. Macrofungi are defined here to include ascomycetes and basidiomycetes with large, easily observed spore-bearing structures that form above or below ground. Each coauthor either provided data on a particular taxonomic group of macrofungi or information on the macrofungi of a specific geographic area. We then employed a meta-analysis to investigate species overlaps between areas, levels of endemism, centers of diversity, and estimated percent of species known for each taxonomic group for each geographic area and for the combined macrofungal data set. Thus, the study provides both a meta-analysis of current data and a gap assessment to help identify research needs. In all, 21,679 names of macrofungi were compiled. The percentage of unique names for each region ranged from 37% for temperate Asia to 72% for Australasia. Approximately 35,000 macrofungal species were estimated to be “unknown” by the contributing authors. This would give an estimated total of 56,679 macrofungi. Our compiled species list does not include data from most of S.E. Europe, Africa, western Asia, or tropical eastern Asia. Even so, combining our list of names with the estimates from contributing authors is in line with our calculated estimate of between 53,000 and 110,000 macrofungal species derived using plant/macrofungal species ratio data. The estimates developed in this study are consistent with a hypothesis of high overall fungal species diversity.  相似文献

The chirality of plectaniaxanthin, a carotenoid vic. glycol from Plectania coccinea, could not be determined by the modified Horeau method. Chiroptical correlation of plectaniaxanthin acetonide and (2′S)-16′, 17′-dinorplectaniaxanthin acetonide was taken as proof of 2′R chirality for natural plectaniaxanthin and its mono- and diesters. The synthesis of the chiral model carotenoid was effected from d-mannitol via 2, 3-O-isopropylidene-d-glyceraldehyde as key synthon.  相似文献

Nearly 200 species of fungi of various orders has been assayed for presence of nitrate reductase by examining the presence of nitrite in the culture medium. This property seems to be useful for identification purposes in the same way as the widely used Bavendamm-test for extracellular oxidases. A literature survey has also been made of fungi assimilating nitrate-nitrogen and those unable to grow with nitrate as sole source of nitrogen. The data in this paper show that there is a good correlation between the ability to reduce nitrate and the assimilation of nitrate-nitrogen. Most of the Deuteromycetes (14 out of 17 investigated) reduce nitrate, whereas the Basidiomycetes (135 species investigated) generally lack this property, except for few taxa like Lepista (Tricholomataceae; Agaricales). A correlation between nitrate reduction and ecological requirements was shown only for Deuteromycetes, where the pathogenic Dermatophytes do not use nitrate-nitrogen and the nematode trapping Arthrobotrys dactyloides is unable to reduce nitrate.  相似文献

Fruiting phenology traits may have a large effect on the detection of fungal species. Detailed studies considering these biologically important traits are, however, surprisingly scarce. We conducted a rigorous fruit body monitoring of wood-inhabiting fungal occurrences over one fruiting season. Taxon-specific longevity of the fruiting was different between different morphological groups. This was mainly due to agaric fruiting being shorter than other groups. Different number and timing of surveys are needed to detect the majority of the fruiting taxa of different wood-inhabiting fungal groups.  相似文献

We studied the changes in the wood-inhabiting fungal communities on dead wood of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) under varying duration and intensity of cormorant nesting. The activities of the birds created large amounts of dead wood, changed wood chemistry and altered stand characteristics. Analyses based on records of fruiting structures of fungi showed that fungal communities in the cormorant colony differed from communities in unaffected forest. Ornithogenic factors impacted least on generalist species and promoted the occurrence of fungi uncharacteristic of coniferous wood or wood in general. The rate of ornithogenic change was rapid: a shift in fungal assemblages was evident by the third year of expansion of the bird colony into unaffected forest. It featured the disappearance of tremelloid fungi, a decline of corticioid fungi and an increase of hyphomycetoid fungi. The proportion of coniferous wood specialists decreased and that of generalists increased. It is expected that the changes in fungal communities will persist until the forest is fully regenerated.  相似文献

Apophlaea lyallii Hooker f. et Harvey and A. sinclairii Harvey in Hooker et Harvey, endemic Rhodophyta from New Zealand, were found to harbor a systemic fungus, Mycosphaerella apophlaeae Kohlmeyer. The algae occur on rocks in the upper intertidal zone and are resistant to desiccation and insolation. These suspected symbiotic associations which are similar to, but different from, lichens, are considered mycophycobioses. This is the first report of a supposed mycophycobiosis in members of the Rhodophyta.  相似文献
