Derelict ships are commonly deployed as artificial reefs in the United States, mainly for recreational fishers and divers.
Despite their popularity, few studies have rigorously examined fish assemblages on these structures and compared them to natural
reefs. Six vessel-reefs off the coast of southeast Florida were censused quarterly (two ships per month) to characterize their
associated fish assemblages. SCUBA divers used a non-destructive point-count method to visually assess the fish assemblages
over 13- and 12-month intervals (March 2000 to March 2001 and March 2002 to February 2003). During the same intervals, fish
assemblages at neighboring natural reefs were also censused. A total of 114,252 fishes of 177 species was counted on natural
and vessel-reefs combined. Mean fish abundance and biomass were significantly greater on vessel-reefs in comparison to surrounding
natural reef areas. Haemulidae was the most abundant family on vessel-reefs, where it represented 46% of total fish abundance.
The most abundant family on natural reefs was Labridae, where it accounted for 24% of total fish abundance. Mean species richness
was significantly greater on vessel-reefs than neighboring natural reefs and also differed among vessel-reefs. Both mean fish
abundance and mean species richness were not significantly different between natural reefs neighboring vessel-reefs and natural
reefs with no artificial structures nearby. This suggests the vessel-reefs are not, in general, attracting fish away from
neighboring natural reefs in our area. Additionally, economically important fish species seem to prefer vessel-reefs, as there
was a greater abundance of these species on vessel-reefs than surrounding natural reef areas. Fish assemblage structure on
natural versus artificial reefs exhibited a low similarity (25.8%). Although no one species was responsible for more than
6% of the total dissimilarity, fish assemblage trophic structure differed strikingly between the two reef types. Planktivores
dominated on vessel-reefs, accounting for 54% of the total abundance. Conversely, planktivores only made up 27% of total abundance
on natural reefs. The results of this study indicate vessel-reef fish assemblages are unique and that these fishes may be
utilizing food resources and habitat characteristics not accessible from or found at natural reefs in our area. Production
may also be occurring at vessel-reefs as the attraction of fish species from nearby natural reefs seems to be minimal.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term development of a hard bottom benthic assemblage over a period of 20 years
in an area off the mouth of a large river. The artificial reef of Fregene was selected because benthic assemblage data were
available for the period 1981–1992. This artificial reef is located in the mid Tyrrhenian Sea, 5 nautical miles north of the
two mouths of the Tevere River (Latium, Italy) and 1.5 nautical miles offshore from Fregene (Rome, Italy). The artificial
reef was deployed in March 1981 for fisheries enhancement in 10–14 m of water on a sandy-silty seabed. The Tevere River carries
suspended materials and a heavy load of organics since it transports Rome’s effluent, resulting in the eutrophic state of
area waters. Benthic sampling was conducted in 2001 by SCUBA diving; two standard surfaces of 400 cm2 were scraped from the vertical walls of the same uppermost block in four different periods. All organisms were identified
and counted. The methodology used is the same as that adopted in the previous periods, so that the 2001 data could be compared
with past collected data. The benthic assemblage was analysed by cluster analysis using the Bray-Curtis index and clustered
using the group average clustering algorithm. The SIMPER procedure was used to identify those taxa that characterize each
station group identified by cluster analysis. Changes in benthic assemblages and hydrological trends of the Tevere River were
investigated using the cumulative sum series method. The 20-year development of the benthic community, starting from the new
substratum, is composed of different phases characterised by different benthic assemblages. In particular five different phases
were distinguished: 1. Pioneer species recruitment (May 1981–June 1981); 2. Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussel) dominance (August 1981–November 1983); 3. M. galloprovincialis regression (July 1984–October 1985); 4. M. galloprovincialis absence (91–92); 5. Bryozoans bioconstruction dominance (2001). The dynamic succession of the observed benthic assemblages
exhibited a good relation with the Tevere River flow. The Tevere River flow, and the subsequent sedimentation process, seems
to have strongly influenced the benthic assemblage succession of the Fregene artificial reef.

The acidification behavior of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus for yoghurt production was investigated along temperature profiles within the optimal window of 38–44 °C. For the optimal
acidification temperature profile search, an optimization engine module built on a modular artificial neural network (ANN)
and genetic algorithm (GA) was used. Fourteen batches of yoghurt fermentations were evaluated using different temperature
profiles in order to train and validate the ANN sub-module. The ANN captured the nonlinear relationship between temperature
profiles and acidification patterns on training data after 150 epochs. This served as an evaluation function for the GA. The
acidification slope of the temperature profile was the performance index. The GA sub-module iteratively evolved better temperature
profiles across generations using GA operations. The stopping criterion was met after 11 generations. The optimal profile
showed an acidification slope of 0.06117 compared to an initial value of 0.0127 and at a set point sequence of 43, 38, 44,
43, and 39 °C. Laboratory evaluation of three replicates of the GA suggested optimum profile of 43, 38, 44, 43, and 39 °C
gave an average slope of 0.04132. The optimization engine used (to be published elsewhere) could effectively search for optimal
profiles of different physico-chemical parameters of fermentation processes. 相似文献

We examined the effect of inseminating mixed parity sows (n = 231) once with fewer sperm at different times relative to ovulation. Lactation length was 19 days and sows received an IM injection of 600 IU equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) 12 h before weaning. At 80 h after eCG injection, sows received an IM injection of 5 mg porcine luteinizing hormone (pLH). Predicted time of ovulation (PTO) was 38 h after pLH injection. Sows were assigned by parity to receive a single transcervical artificial insemination (AI) at either 6 or 24 h before PTO with semen doses containing either 2.5 or 1.25 × 109 sperm. A positive control group of sows (n = 49) was subject to conventional AI 24 and 6 h before PTO. Detection of estrus was performed in the presence of a boar and only sows exhibiting estrous behavior at the assigned time of AI were included in the study. Farrowing rate for sows receiving 2.5 × 109 sperm at 6 h before PTO was greater than that for sows receiving 1.25 × 109 sperm at 24 h before PTO (85% versus 61%, P < 0.05). All other groups were intermediate. There was no effect of time of AI or sperm numbers on subsequent litter size. These data indicate that single insemination of fewer sperm may compromise sow fertility, even when performed transcervically, if not appropriately timed relative to ovulation. 相似文献

The ability of weeds to form a seed bank is important for their population dynamics and management because it provides a refuge
enabling reinvasion after established target plants have died. However, knowledge of the differential seed behaviour of individual
species over multiple years and varying environmental conditions is surprisingly rare but necessary for effective control
of diverse weed populations. We established a seed burial experiment in alpine habitats differing in management regime (i.e.,
forest, hay meadow and pasture) to determine whether seeds of the unpalatable perennial weeds, Veratrum album (white hellebore) and Gentiana lutea (yellow gentian) were able to delay germination and remain viable over 3 years. Our study shows that both species formed
a short-term persistent seed bank; in the third-year, the soil seed banks of both species were nearly depleted, having declined
to <5% of their original size. Both species had strikingly different germination strategies: G. lutea seeds mainly germinated in their first-year, whilst the majority of V. album seeds germinated in their second-year. The fraction of dormant G. lutea seeds increased with seed age, indicating that seeds remained viable after forgoing germination in the previous year. Habitat-specific
differences in seed germination increased with seed age, with germination fractions being lowest in moist hay meadows. This
suggests that the negative effects of anoxic conditions became more pronounced as seeds aged in hay meadows. Conversely, seed
dormancy was equal among habitats. The absence of a long-term persistent seed bank has important implications for the management
of both nuisance and endangered-plant populations. In the case of V. album and G. lutea, re-colonization of habitats from the seed bank is unlikely after established plants have been removed. 相似文献

IntroductionCardiovascular dysautonomia comprising postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and orthostatic hypotension (OH) is one of the presentations in COVID-19 recovered subjects. We aim to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular dysautonomia in post COVID-19 patients and to evaluate an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to identify time domain heart rate variability (HRV) measures most suitable for short term ECG in these subjects.MethodsThis observational study enrolled 92 recently COVID-19 recovered subjects who underwent measurement of heart rate and blood pressure response to standing up from supine position and a 12-lead ECG recording for 60 s period during supine paced breathing. Using feature extraction, ECG features including those of HRV (RMSSD and SDNN) were obtained. An AI model was constructed with ShAP AI interpretability to determine time domain HRV features representing post COVID-19 recovered state. In addition, 120 healthy volunteers were enrolled as controls.ResultsCardiovascular dysautonomia was present in 15.21% (OH:13.04%; POTS:2.17%). Patients with OH had significantly lower HRV and higher inflammatory markers. HRV (RMSSD) was significantly lower in post COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls (13.9 ± 11.8 ms vs 19.9 ± 19.5 ms; P = 0.01) with inverse correlation between HRV and inflammatory markers. Multiple perceptron was best performing AI model with HRV(RMSSD) being the top time domain HRV feature distinguishing between COVID-19 recovered patients and healthy controls.ConclusionPresent study showed that cardiovascular dysautonomia is common in COVID-19 recovered subjects with a significantly lower HRV compared to healthy controls. Lysyl oxidases (LOXs) are a family of copper-dependent oxido-deaminases that can modify the side chain of lysyl residues in collagen and elastin, thereby leading to the spontaneous formation of non-reducible aldehyde-derived interpolypeptide chain cross-links. The consequences of LOX inhibition in producing lathyrism are well documented, but the consequences on collagen fibril formation are less clear. Here we used β-aminoproprionitrile (BAPN) to inhibit LOX in tendon-like constructs (prepared from human tenocytes), which are an experimental model of cell-mediated collagen fibril formation. The improvement in structure and strength seen with time in control constructs was absent in constructs treated with BAPN. As expected, BAPN inhibited the formation of aldimine-derived cross-links in collagen, and the constructs were mechanically weak. However, an unexpected finding was that BAPN treatment led to structurally abnormal collagen fibrils with irregular profiles and widely dispersed diameters. Of special interest, the abnormal fibril profiles resembled those seen in some Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome phenotypes. Importantly, the total collagen content developed normally, and there was no difference in COL1A1 gene expression. Collagen type V, decorin, fibromodulin, and tenascin-X proteins were unaffected by the cross-link inhibition, suggesting that LOX regulates fibrillogenesis independently of these molecules. Collectively, the data show the importance of LOX for the mechanical development of early collagenous tissues and that LOX is essential for correct collagen fibril shape formation. 相似文献

It has been estimated that the energy captured in one hour of sunlight that reaches our planet is equivalent to annual energy production by human population globally. To efficiently capture the practically inexhaustible solar energy and convert it into high energy density solar fuels provides an attractive ‘green’ alternative to running our present day economies on rapidly depleting fossil fuels, especially in the context of ever growing global energy demand. Natural photosynthesis represents one of the most fundamental processes that sustain life on Earth. It provides nearly all the oxygen we breathe, the food we consume and fossil fuels that we so much depend on. Imitating the reactions that occur at the early stages of photosynthesis represents the main challenge in the quest for construction of an efficient, robust, self-renewing and cost-effective ‘artificial leaf’. In this review we summarize the main molecular features of the natural solar energy converters, photosystem I and photosystem II, that allow them to operate at high quantum efficiencies, and thus inspire the smart matrix design of the artificial solar-to-fuel devices. We also discuss the main challenges that face the field and overview selected recent technological advances that have tremendously accelerated the race for a fully operational artificial leaf that could serve as a viable alternative to fossil fuels for energy production. 相似文献
