A chemically defined diet is a powerful tool for the study of nutritional physiology. We have developed a simple, standardized diet for Rhytidoponera ants to facilitate experiments on nutrititional regulation and nutrient balancing in these ants. Colonies of Rhytidoponera metallica were fed with a standardized diet, containing a 1:2 ratio of total proteins to digestible carbohydrates. After 8 weeks, colony performance (number of brood raised, the mass of pupae, and the mortality of workers) was superior to that of colonies fed with Bhatkar-Whitcomb diet and similar to colonies fed with Drosophila and honey-water. For classification of action potential shapes in multineuron recordings, we present a spike sorting system employing independent component analysis (ICA) and an unsupervised artificial neural network (Kohonen's self-organizing map, SOM). We focus on how ICA in the first stage of the spike sorting system can be used to address specific problems arising in recordings using multielectrode arrays in the CNS. Using real data recorded from the pontine nuclei in rats and simulated data, we evaluate the performance of several ICA algorithms to remove cross-talk between electrodes using data from continuous recording (or simulation). When using cut-out data, the standard format of extracellular spike recordings, new problems emerge and robust algorithms are needed. We demonstrate that several ICA algorithms show a good performance on cut-out data from multielectrode array recordings (simulated and real data). In tetrode recordings the same neuron is purposely recorded by several electrodes simultaneously and we show, how independent component analysis can be used in this case to identify redundant information and hence to compress relevant information, improving subsequent clustering of a SOM.  相似文献

A seed sowing experiment was conducted in a mixed secondary woodland on acidic soils in NE Germany with Melampyrum pratense, an annual ant-dispersed forest herb which lacks a natural population in the study area, but is abundant in similar habitats. Each set of 300 seeds was sown within one square metre at three sites in 1997, and the development of the populations was recorded from 1998 onward. Additionally, seed fall patterns were studied in a natural population by means of adhesive cardboard. All trials resulted in the recruitment of populations, which survived and increased in both individual number and area, up to the year 2001. Thus, local distribution of Melampyrum pratense is dispersal-limited. Total individual number increased from 105 to 3,390, and total population area from 2.07 to 109.04 m2. Migration occurred in all directions. Mean migration rate was 0.91 m per year, and the highest migration rate was 6.48 m. No individual was recorded beyond 7.63 m from the centres of the sawn squares after three years, suggesting exclusive short-distance dispersal. As primary dispersal enables only distances of up to 0.25 m, ants are presumed to be the main dispersal vectors. Despite differences in individual number and colonization patterns, migration rates did not differ significantly between the populations, but were significantly higher in 2001 due to an increased population size. Colonization patterns were characterized by a rapid, negative exponential decrease of population density with increasing distance from the sown plot, suggesting a colonization by establishment of more or less isolated outposts of individuals and a subsequent gradual infill of the gaps between. My results resemble myrmecochorous dispersal distances in temperate woodlands, and migration rates and patterns across ecotones from ancient to recent deciduous forests. They may function as a colonization model of Melampyrum pratense after accidental long-distance dispersal.  相似文献

Large amounts of DNA-enriched biomaterials, such as salmon milts and shellfish gonads, are discarded as industrial waste around the world. Therefore, the utilizations of DNA with the specific function are important for the biomaterial science and the curce technology. We could convert the discarded DNA to an enzymatic collapsible material by the addition of DNA to the artificial polymer material, such as nylon. Although these DNA-artificial polymer composite materials were stable in water, these materials indicated the collapsibility at the DNA-hydrolyzed enzyme, such as Micrococcal nuclease, condition. Additionally, these collapsibilities under enzyme condition were controlled by the number of imino groups in the components of the artificial polymer. Furthermore, these composite materials could create the fiber form with a highly ordered molecular orientation by the reaction at the liquid/liquid interface. The DNA-artificial polymer composite materials may have the potential utility as a novel bio-, medical-, and environmental materials with the enzymatic collapsibility and degradability.  相似文献

The ability of benthic macrofauna to disperse and colonize new habitats throughout their life may contribute substantially to small-scale patchiness in abundances in different habitats. Microgastropods in coralline turf on rocky shores in Australia are very patchy in abundance at different spatio-temporal scales. They therefore represent an ideal assemblage for testing hypotheses about processes of colonization. Patterns and rates of colonization of 10 species of microgastropods were investigated in one intertidal habitat (coralline turf) in Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, using artificial substrata, which are considered to be a good mimic of natural coralline turfs. The experiment was designed to test the hypotheses that (1) patterns (abundance of colonizing individuals) and mode (juveniles vs. adults) of colonization depends on the proximity of a patch to a potential source of dispersing colonists (i.e. patch of natural coralline turf), (2) different species show different rates of colonization, and (3) patterns of succession are not repeatable among different patches of natural algae. Seven different plots (natural patches of coralline turf) were randomly chosen in the area of study. Artificial units (called patches) were placed at different distances around each plot (within the plot and 0, 50 or 100 cm away from the edge). Samples were collected 6, 13, and 27 days after the experiment started. Colonization was rapid (i.e. within 6 days) for most species. Pattern (number of individuals) and mode of colonization (adults vs. juveniles) varied among algal plots. Most species responded differently across patches causing no consistent patterns of colonization. Furthermore, patterns of colonization of artificial units were not always synchronous with, or in the same direction as, changes in abundances in the nearest algal plots, which themselves showed no consistent spatio-temporal pattern.  相似文献

Abstract In many organisms, large offspring have improved fitness over small offspring, and thus their size is under strong selection. However, due to a trade-off between offspring size and number, females producing larger offspring necessarily must produce fewer unless the total amount of reproductive effort is unlimited. Because differential gene expression among environments may affect genetic covariances among traits, it is important to consider environmental effects on the genetic relationships among traits. We compared the genetic relationships among egg size, lifetime fecundity, and female adult body mass (a trait linked to reproductive effort) in the seed beetle, Stator limbatus , between two environments (host-plant species Acacia greggii and Cercidium floridum ). Genetic correlations among these traits were estimated through half-sib analysis, followed with artificial selection on egg size to observe the correlated responses of lifetime fecundity and female body mass. We found that the magnitude of the genetic trade-off between egg size and lifetime fecundity differed between environments–a strong trade-off was estimated when females laid eggs on C. floridum seeds, yet this trade-off was weak when females laid eggs on A. greggii seeds. Also differing between environments was the genetic correlation between egg size and female body mass–these traits were positively genetically correlated for egg size on A. greggii seeds, yet uncorrelated on C. floridum seeds. On A. greggii seeds, the evolution of egg size and traits linked to reproductive effort (such as female body mass) are not independent from each other as commonly assumed in life-history theory.  相似文献

目的:探讨人工骨表面覆盖口腔修复膜对颌骨囊性缺损人工骨植入术患者植入腔感染的预防作用。方法:将我院2012年4月~2016年2月收治的78例颌骨囊性缺损患者按治疗时间分为对照组38例与观察组40例,均行开窗人工骨植入术,其中对照组采取常规抗感染,观察组采取人工骨表面覆盖口腔修复膜。比较两组的囊腔体积、面积缩减率、人工骨植入量、骨厚度及植入腔感染率。结果:两组的囊腔体积、面积缩减率及人工骨植入量比较差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。但观察组的骨厚度明显大于对照组(P0.05),植入腔感染率明显低于对照组(P0.05)。结论:在开窗人工骨植入术的基础上使用口腔修复膜不仅能引导骨组织再生,而且能够显著降低植入腔的感染率。  相似文献

It is generally known that the water quality of shallow lakes can be influenced significantly by marginal wetlands. In order to study the efficacy of constructed littoral wetlands in the IJsselmeer area (The Netherlands) for water quality improvement, a field survey was carried out in 2003. Vegetation, soil, pore water and surface water characteristics were measured in spring and summer in two types of littoral zones: natural and constructed for 8–16 years. The study showed that constructed wetlands perform well and are suitable to enlarge the vegetated littoral zone in the IJsselmeer area. In both natural and constructed sites vegetation biomass varied between 2,200 g m−2 for helophyte vegetation and 1,300 g m−2 for low herbaceous vegetation. Nutrient concentrations in the pore water of constructed sites tended to be higher than in natural sites. and concentrations in pore water were much lower when vegetation was present, probably as a result of plant uptake. The N and P accumulation rate in the soil of constructed wetlands was 20 g N m−2 y−1 and 3 g P m−2 y−1 in vegetated plots; without vegetation the rate was much lower (8 g N m−2 y−1 and 1.8 g P m−2 y−1). We conclude that concerning their effect on water quality, constructed sites may replace natural sites, at least after 8–16 years. Principal component analysis showed a relationship between vegetation biomass and flooding, and nutrient concentrations in soil and pore water. Biomass was negatively correlated with extractable nutrients and positively with soil total N and P content. Flooding duration was negatively related to pore water salinity and positively to pore water nutrients. Due to their high biomass, helophyte stands retained significantly more nutrients than low pioneer vegetation and are therefore more suitable for improving water quality. Handling editor: S. Ecological realism is an important yet rarely reported feature of model ecosystems. In this case study, we assess the realism of four outdoor artificial stream mesocosms (4 m2) bordering a chalk river in southern England. Comparisons of physiochemical conditions and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were made between the mesocosm units and the parent water body, a side arm of the River Frome. Physicochemistry of the mesocosm replicates was similar to that of the source stream, with congruent temporal variation evident between the real system and each of the models. The high realism of the mesocosms was explained by the outdoor location and close physical proximity of the array to the source stream, and the short mesocosm residence time of water sourced from the parent feeder system. Mesocosms supported a diverse array of benthic macroinvertebrates (60 families from 14 taxonomic orders), including all macroinvertebrate families in the source stream. Individual mesocosms contained a mean of 89% of source stream biota. We conclude that once-through mesocosms can be satisfactory analogues of natural systems, particularly where model and natural scales overlap. Handling editor: D. Dudgeon  相似文献
