Abstract Hypochlora alba (Dodge) is a specialist grasshopper that lives and feeds almost exclusively on Artemisia ludoviciana Nutt., a sage plant mostly avoided as food by generalist or polyphagous grasshoppers, such as Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fabr.). Adaptations to feeding on the pubescent sage foliage containing high levels of allelochemics may involve behavioural as well as physiological specialization. Using an electronic device to monitor feeding activity, we compared feeding periodicity, bout length, bout frequency, and overall time spent feeding by H.alba on sage foliage and by M.sanguinipes on seedling ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.), the plants on which they had been reared. Although both species fed for about the same amount of time per day (c. 4–5%), they achieved this by two different feeding patterns. H. alba had feeding bouts averaging c. 10 min each, compared to c. 4–5 min for M.sanguinipes. Bout frequency was reversed, with M.sanguinipes feeding about once every hour and H.alba about half as often. Bout length for both species was unaffected by phase of the photoperiod while bout frequency, and consequently the rate of feeding in min/h, was typically reduced by two-thirds or more during the dark phase. Artemisinin, an anti-malarial drug isolated from the annual wormwood Artemisia annua L., has a marked activity against chloroquine-resistant and chloroquine-sensitive strains of Plasmodium falciparum, and is useful in treatment of cerebral malaria. Shoot cultures of Artemisia annua L. were established on Murashige and Skoog basal medium which contained (per litre) 30 g sucrose, 0.5 mg 6-benzyladenine and 0.05 mg naphthaleneacetic acid. Using an optimized combination of sucrose (30 g/l), nitrate (45 mM), inorganic phosphate (200 mg/l), gibberellic acid (7 mg/l) and the ratio of NH4
+-N to NO3
–-N of 1:3, artemisinin production reached 26.7 mg/l after 30 days. This procedure provides a potential alternative for production of artemisinin from in vitro tissue cultures. 相似文献

Abstract. The effect of soil drought on water-use efficiency (WUE) and water relations was examined for potted Artemisia tridentata Nutt. and Pinus ponderosa Laws., a dominant Great Basin desert shrub and a Sierran montane tree, respectively. Before the onset of drought, A. tridentata had slightly higher photosynthetic rates than P. ponderosa and A. tridentata maintained positive photosynthetic rates at substantially lower water potentials (Ψ). Complete stomatal closure and cessation of photosynthesis occurred at a Ψ of ca. −2.5 MPa for P. ponderosa and less than −5.0 MPa for A. tridentata. Repeated drought cycles caused a small increase in bulk modulus of elasticity for A. tridentata and neither species exhibited significant osmotic adjustment. WUE was similar at Ψ≥−1.0 MPa but as Ψ decreased P. ponderosa consistently maintained higher WUE than A. tridentata. The primary factor contributing to higher WUE for P. ponderosa was the rapid decrease in stomatal conductance with decreasing Ψ. Comparatively low WUE for A. tridentata , a drought tolerant species, suggests that efficient use of water is a conservative ecophysiological 'strategy' that can be detrimental in a competitive water-limited environment. The combination of profligate use of water and a high degree of drought tolerance may be a more successful combination of physiological characteristics in certain dry habitats. 相似文献

Questions: The formerly overgrazed Inner Mongolia steppe was subject to retrogressive succession. Today, Artemisia frigida and Potentilla acaulis are two dominant species in different phases of successive degradation. To investigate the impact of grazing intensity on spatial community structure, we investigated the small‐scale spatial association between A. frigida and P. acaulis at zero, light, medium and heavy sheep grazing, and proposed factors involved in the spatial associations between these two species along a grazing intensity gradient. Location: The Inner Mongolia Grassland Ecosystem Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Methods: Four grazing intensities were selected: zero, light (1.33 sheep/ha), medium (4.0 sheep/ha) and heavy (6.7 sheep/ha). After 13 years of grazing three 2 m × 2 m quadrats with 100 × 100 cells of size 2 cm × 2 cm were randomly selected in each treatment in July and August 2002. The presence of A. frigida and P. acaulis in each cell was recorded and the positions of the individuals were mapped using Cartesian coordinates in each quadrat. The small‐scale spatial associations between A. frigida or P. acaulis were quantified with the L12(d), J12(d) functions (both derived from K12(d), the former indicating the type of the spatial association, the latter indicating the strength of the spatial association), using Monte Carlo simulations. Results: A. frigida was negatively associated with P. acaulis at short distances (0–100 cm) under zero and light grazing, and negatively or independently under medium and heavy grazing. Increasing grazing intensities suppressed the peak negative associations. More intense grazing enhanced the tendency towards independent distribution of these two species. Conclusions: The small‐scale spatial associations between A. frigida and P. acaulis were significantly different at four different intensities of sheep grazing. Grazing disturbance, clonal growth habit of species, and interspecific competition are the main factors leading to a difference of spatial associations between these two species at different grazing intensities. 相似文献

The concentration of essential oils in big sagebrush foliage, Artemisia tridentata subsp. tridentata, subsp. vaseyana and subsp. wyomingensis collected from Oregon, differed significantly between individual shrubs with no correlation to geographic site, subspecies genotype, or plant age. Essential oil composition, measured by headspace analysis, was not affected by plant age, location of tissue within the crown, or geographic site. Six of 16 compounds differed quantitatively by subspecies, with wyomingensis and tridentata having nearly the same composition. Vaseyana could be recognized by its significantly lower concentration of acetone and methacrolein, two highly volatile, non-terpenoid, constituents. The implication of these results and those of recent studies are discussed in relation to herbivory. 相似文献
