Aim Using a long‐term data set we investigated the response of semi‐desert grasslands to altered disturbance regimes in conjunction with climate patterns. Specifically, we were interested in the response of a non‐native grass (Eragrostis lehmanniana), mesquite (Prosopis velutina), and native species to the reintroduction of fire and removal of livestock. Location The study site is located on the 45,360‐ha Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (31°32′ N, 110°30′ W) in southern Arizona, USA. In 1985, livestock were removed and prescribed fires were reintroduced to this semi‐desert grassland dominated by non‐native grasses and encroaching mesquite trees. Methods Plant species cover was monitored along 38, 30‐m transects five times over a period of 15 years. Data were analysed using principal components analysis on the variance–covariance and correlation matrix, multivariate analysis of variance for changes over time in relation to environmental data, and analysis of variance for altered disturbance regimes. Results Reintroduction of fire and removal of livestock have not led to an increase in native species diversity or a decrease in non‐native grasses or mesquite. The cover of non‐native grass was influenced by soil type in 1993. Main conclusions Variability of plant community richness, diversity, and cover over time appear to be most closely linked to fluctuations in precipitation rather than human‐altered disturbance regimes. The effects of altered grazing and fire regimes are likely confounded by complex interactions with climatic factors in systems significantly altered from their original physiognomy.  相似文献

Amendments, such as woodchips or biochar, may improve success of arid and semi‐arid wildland revegetation limited by unpredictable and insufficient rainfall as well as low soil water holding capacity. In an 116‐day greenhouse experiment simulating a nearby savannah, response to four amendment treatments (no treatment, incorporated biochar, incorporated woodchips, and surface woodchips) was tested across two field soils (Chiricahua and Hathaway) and four simulated precipitation treatments (100, 80, 60, and 40% of average) in a replicated design. Soil type, amendment treatments, and simulated precipitation all had significant (p < 0.01) effects on aboveground biomass. The surface woodchip treatment averaged the highest biomass production of the amendment treatments (489 kg/ha) and the incorporated woodchips had the lowest (298 kg/ha). Aboveground biomass decreased with decreasing precipitation (533, 468, 350, and 216 kg/ha, respectively). Biochar amended soils averaged 5–10% higher volumetric water content than the woodchip amendments and controls through a 28‐day dry down. Microbial nitrogen and phosphorus acquiring activities were higher in Hathaway soils while carbon activities were higher in Chiricahua soils. The surface woodchip treatment resulted in a different species composition than the other amendment and control treatments (p < 0.01). None of the amendment treatments ameliorated low precipitation conditions for plants. Contrary to expectations, carbon and phosphorus exoenzyme activities were highest in the lower precipitation treatments (60 and 40%) and nitrogen exoenzyme activities remained high in Hathaway soils regardless of precipitation. Surface application of woodchips increased vegetation as well as carbon and phosphorus exoenzyme activities while incorporating woodchips suppressed vegetation.  相似文献

The expansion of road networks in desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) habitat in the Sonoran Desert has raised questions concerning appropriate mitigation to reduce impacts at the population level. Although some effects, namely road-kill and habitat loss, have been well documented, illegal tortoise collection has been insufficiently addressed. It has become increasingly important for wildlife and land-use managers to understand the cumulative impacts of roads on tortoises and the effect that those impacts have on population persistence. We estimated the probability of desert tortoise detection and collection along 2-lane paved, maintained gravel, and non-maintained gravel roads to evaluate whether collection probabilities were related to road type. Although collection probability did not vary by road type, the probability of desert tortoise detection by passing motorists was greatest on maintained gravel roads and fewest on non-maintained gravel and paved roads. These results have implications for effectively mitigating the impacts of roads on desert tortoises. Published 2011. In view of the reported high prevalence of otitis media and mastoiditis in the present-day Indian inhabitants of Arizona, when an opportunity arose to examine the skulls of prehistoric Indians in the collection of the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, it was thought that determining the prevalence of mastoiditis in them might be helpful in the treatment and prevention of mastoid infections in the present-day population. Our findings are compared with those of two other studies of mastoiditis in prehistoric Indians in another area of the United States.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In Arizona, USA, Allen's lappet-browed bat (Idionycteris phyllotis) forms maternity colonies in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) snags. There is little information on the roosting habitat of males. We used radiotelemetry to locate 16 maternity, 3 postlactating, and 2 bachelor roosts and combined data with unpublished data for maternity roosts (n = 11) located in 1993–1995. Most (96%) maternity roosts were in large-diameter ( ± SE: 64 ± 2.7 cm) ponderosa pine snags under sloughing bark. Models that best predicted the probability of a snag's use as a maternity roost indicated bats selected taller snags closer to forest roads than comparison snags. Maternity roosts averaged 11 bats per roost (SE = 2, n = 15; from exit counts) and were an average distance of 1.6 km from capture sites (SE = 0.3, n = 17). Bachelor roosts were in vertical sandstone cliff faces in pinyon-juniper (Pinus edulis-Juniperus spp.) woodlands approximately 12 km from capture sites; these and other capture records in Arizona indicated sexual segregation may have occurred during the maternity season. Of 11 maternity snag roosts located in 1993–1995, only one continued to function as a roost. Resource managers should maintain patches of large-diameter ponderosa pine snags with peeling bark to provide maternity roosting habitat for Allen's lappet-browed bat.  相似文献

This report describes the membrane binding properties of [3H]hemicholinium-3 ([3H]HC-3), a selective inhibitor of sodium-dependent high-affinity choline uptake (SDHACU) in cholinergic nerve terminals. Under the described assay conditions, [3H]HC-3 bind with a saturable population of high-affinity (apparent Kd = 1.9 nM) CNS membrane sites having the regional distribution: striatum much greater than hippocampus greater than cerebral cortex greater than cerebellum. High-affinity [3H]HC-3 binding is entirely dependent upon the presence of sodium chloride (EC50 = 35-50 mM) and is markedly reduced when other salts of sodium or monovalent ions are substituted. [3H]HC-3 binding is inhibited by choline (Ki = 6 microM) and acetylcholine (Ki = 35 microM) but markedly less sensitive to other cholinergic agents and metabolic inhibitors. In light of the similar ionic dependencies, regional distributions and pharmacological specificities of [3H]HC-3 binding and SDHACU, closely associated sites may be involved in both processes.  相似文献

Binding studies with the 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist [3H]nitrendipine [( 3H]NTD) were performed in uninephrectomized, deoxycorticosterone (DOCA)-NaCl hypertensive rats and vehicle treated normotensive control littermates. After 6 weeks of treatment, hypertensive (199 mmHg, systolic arterial pressure) DOCA rats showed significantly increased heart, left ventricle, and kidney weight in contrast to normotensive (135 mmHg) controls. [3H]NTD binding in the brainstem was significantly reduced (51 +/- 5 fmol/mg protein) in DOCA-NaCl rats, as compared to controls (116 +/- 24 fmol/mg protein). However, no significant differences were found in the [3H]NTD dissociation constants for DOCA-NaCl (0.43 +/- 0.03 nM) or control rats (0.62 +/- 0.06 nM). Cerebral cortical and left ventricular tissue showed no significant alterations in receptor binding density or affinity. Specific [3H]NTD binding was not significantly altered in other selected brain regions or the atria. These data suggest that alterations in the dihydropyridine binding sites associated with calcium channels in the brainstem may be involved in the etiology of DOCA-NaCl-induced hypertension.  相似文献
