The tropical–temperate interface of the southern Neotropics harbours an interdigitating array of biomes (Puna, Monte, Chaco, Yungas). This topographic and climatically complex region needs urgent conservation efforts, as it is being transformed by human activities at an accelerating pace. We analyse georeferenced field records of mammal species in northwestern Argentina (provinces: Catamarca, Jujuy, Salta, Tucuman) in order to define biodiversity hotspots on the basis of 0.5°× 0.5° grid cells within northwestern Argentina according to total richness of mammal species, richness of megaspecies (species above 10 kg), and endemic species (species restricted to Argentina or neighbouring countries with shared biomes). The mammal fauna of northwestern Argentina is fairly well known (176 species). The biomes differ considerably in species richness (Puna low, Yungas high) and species composition. We found no significant difference between endemic and non-endemic species regarding cell occupancy or body size. Cell occupancy was not correlated to body size. Across grids, species richness, number of megaspecies as well as richness of endemics are all correlated to sampling effort. More than 50% of the species in the region are restricted to one or two biomes. Overall, the species turn-over between biomes in northwestern Argentina is high. Using a simple algorithm we identified 10 grid cells which covered 90% of the total number of recorded species, and contrast them with the protected areas. While the Puna and Yungas biomes are rather well protected, the arid and semiarid Monte and Chaco are in need of urgent attention in biodiversity conservation.  相似文献

Guanay cormorants Phalacrocorax bougainvilli aredistributed mostly on the Pacific coast of Peru and northern Chile. A smallpopulation of around 50 pairs was described on the Patagonian Atlantic coast inthe late 1960s. Further records have revealed a progressive decrease of thispopulation. During 1999 we looked for guanay cormorants at those Atlanticcolonies where the species was recorded in the past. Only four individuals weredetected in one colony (Punta Lobería), and all of them were mated withking cormorants P. albiventer. In addition, we recordedhybrids between guanay and king cormorants mated with pure king and imperialcormorants P. atriceps. Causes of the population declineare unknown. Since guanay cormorants inhabiting the Atlantic coast could be agenetically differentiated population, we emphasize the need for molecularstudies. If genetic polymorphism is detected, the capture of remnant individualsin order to constitute a genetic stock should be considered.  相似文献

This communication aims to describe an isolated sauropodomorph tooth (MPEF-PV 10860) from the Cañadón Asfalto Formation and test its phylogenetic relationships with other sauropodomophs. The novelty of this specimen implies a combination of features present in non-sauropod sauropodomorphs (coarse denticles at 45° with respect to the margin, absent marginal grooves and lingual concavity) and others previously referred to as synapomorphic of Sauropoda and subgroups of this lineage (D-shaped cross section, enamel-wrinkling). A comparison with formerly defined sauropod tooth morphotypes from Cañadón Asfalto highlights major differences in enamel-wrinkling, having a simpler and more homogeneous pattern. The crown proportions, compared with other sauropodomorph teeth, retrieve MPEF-PV 10860 within the morphospace of sauropods in two different age-ratio scatterplots, and the phylogenetic analysis depicts this specimen in multiple positions within Sauropodiforms but outside Eusauropoda, indicating the presence of both eusauropods and non-eusauropods in the Cañadón Asfalto Formation, and of a putative new species.  相似文献

We report on community structural, ecophysiological, phenological, and morphological measurements made on woody plant species in the high elevation pre-altiplano zone on the western slopes of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Notwithstanding extreme conditions of low rainfall, high atmospheric vapour demand and diurnal temperature fluctuation, a diversity of habitats (associated with drainage and slope aspect), appreciable local plant species richness (28 woody perennial plant species in a small area), and an array of adaptive morphological ecophysiological and phenological traits are present among woody species in these shrublands. Family diversity was low with four families accounted for 82% of the species. A range of gas exchange and watering use efficiency strategies was present ranging from highly efficient CAM species with a carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) of 3.7–7.5‰ through C3 species with varying stomatal and gas exchange characteristics with a Δ of 14.4 to 19.8‰. Drought-deciduous small-leaved amphistomatic species from arid slopes generally had high stomatal conductance and high carbon assimilation rates during the rainy season. These drought deciduous species were largely leafless and, with one exception had low water potentials, during the dry season. Wash and less xeric site species commonly had broader evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves, higher dry season water potentials, and relatively consistent and moderate rates of gas exchange throughout the year. For all species, intrinsic water use efficiency (as estimated from the inverse of c i :c a ratio) correlated positively with mean leaf width (broader leaves had a lower higher intrinsic WUE) and dry season water potential. The charismatic high altitude tree, Polylepis rugulosa (Roaceae), had a population structure that suggests highly episodic establishment of seedlings, likely in sequences of wet years. Little of the area of these significant shrublands is currently protected. It would be desirable to add areas of pre-altiplano shrublands to adjacent national parks to ensure the persistence of these important communities. The environmental relationships and ecophysiology of Azorella compacta, a giant cushion plant, were investigated in Parque Nacional Lauca, Chile (18°10'–18°25' S and 69°16' W, 4400 m asl). The diurnal temperature range can reach 42 °C on some days of the year. The surface temperature of A. compacta was 13 °C below that of the air temperature of −7 °C at dawn, but from midmorning to late afternoon, the plant surface temperature remained within a few degrees of the air temperature. Soil surface temperatures did not differ between north- and south-facing slopes, but a model showed an increase in radiation reception by north-facing slopes throughout most of the year. Gas exchange measurements of A. compacta measured at the onset of the wet season ranged from −0.6662 to 11.4 μmol·m−2·s−1, and maximum stomatal conductance (Gs) was 410 mmol·m−2·s−1. The estimated light compensation point was 89 μmol·m−2·s−1 and estimated light saturation occurred at about 1280 μmol·m−2·s−1. Diurnal water potential measurements for A. compacta ranged from −1.67 to −2.65 MPa. This is one of the first ecophysiological studies of a tropical alpine cushion plant.  相似文献

A new genus of broad‐nosed weevils belonging to the tribe Naupactini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is described, based on six species from the Páramo–Puna subregion (Andean region) of South America. Three species are new and three have been transferred from the genus Asymmathetes (Asymmathetes nigrans, Asymmathetes rugicollis, and Asymmathetes vulcanorum). The new genus is recognized by the black, denuded, and shiny tegument, the well‐developed pre‐epistome, the elytral base curved backwards on middle, the reduction of the hindwings, and the widely separated procoxae, closer to the anterior than to the posterior margin of the prosternum. A cladistic analysis of the six species of the new genus plus five out‐groups (Amitrus, Amphideritus, Asymmathetes, Melanocyphus, and Trichocyphus), using 49 morphological characters, resulted in a single cladogram. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 166 , 54–71.  相似文献

Rough scad Trachurus lathami is a key pelagic fish in the Argentinean continental shelf (ACS, south-west Atlantic Ocean), with recent increases in abundance. It is a main prey of fishes and marine mammals, and shares the environment with commercially relevant pelagic species (Engraulis anchoita and Scomber colias), playing an important role linking lower and upper trophic levels in the ecosystem. This study aims to determine the ontogenetic changes in the diet composition, feeding strategy, trophic niche breadth and trophic level of T. lathami in the North Patagonian Shelf (43°–45°30′S). The stomach contents of adult fish (n = 238) were analysed. The results suggest a clear ontogenetic shift in the diet at a size of ~190 mm. Smaller individuals (160–190 mm) were specialized on misidaceans, and showed the highest trophic level, while larger T. lathami (221–230 mm) consumed decapods (Peisos petrunkevitchi) and teleosts (eggs and larvae). Trophic niche breadth was higher at the medium-sized class (191–220 mm), which mainly preyed on copepods (Calanoides carinatus) and chaetognaths (Sagitta spp.), evidencing a more diverse diet and a rather generalist strategy. Updated information on the trophic ecology of T. lathami evidences its extremely plastic feeding behaviour, being able to adapt its trophic niche to the most readily available food items from the mesopelagic community.  相似文献

We studied the efficiency of thermoregulation in four high elevation Liolaemus species in the Andes of Salta, Argentina; Liolaemus irregularis, Liolaemus multicolor, Liolaemus albiceps and Liolaemus yanalcu. One of the species, L. irregularis, shows a broad distribution being in allopatry in some localities and in sympatry with L. albiceps, L. multicolor and L. yanalcu at different sites. Together with this variation in assemblages, the degree of phylogenetic relatedness is different with L. irregularis being most closely related to L. albiceps than to the other two species (L. multicolor and L. yanalcu). We measured body (Tb), microenvironmental (Ta, Ts), and operative temperatures (Te) in the field, and preferred body temperature (Tpref) in laboratory for each one of the species of assemblages. Three out of the four species showed a high thermoregulatory efficiency except for L. yanalcu, a moderate thermoregulator. The species studied here show high Tb in the field compared to most of the recorded Liolaemus species. However, the Tpref values were similar to other Liolaemus species. No evidence of thermal niche segregation between species in sympatry was observed. Our results suggest that the species studied here, despite living at high elevation and harsh climatic conditions are able to behaviorally or physiologically thermoregulate to achieve Tbs close to their Tpref, probably because of low predation risk and perhaps low levels of competition.  相似文献
