The Arctic and the Antarctic differ by age and isolation of the respective marine faunas. Antarctic fish are highly stenothermal, in response to stable water temperatures, whereas the Arctic ones are exposed to seasonal and latitudinal temperature variations. The knowledge of the mechanisms of phenotypic response to cold exposure in species of both polar habitats offers fundamental insights into the nature of environmental adaptation. In the process of cold adaptation, the evolutionary trend of Antarctic fish has led to unique specialisations, including modification of haematological characteristics, e.g. decreased amounts and multiplicity of haemoglobins.Unlike Antarctic Notothenioidei, Arctic teleosts have high haemoglobin multiplicity. Although the presence of functionally and structurally distinct haemoglobins is a plesiomorphic condition for many perciform-like fishes, it seems that the oxygen-transport system of teleost fish in the Arctic region has been adjusted to temperature differences and fluctuations of Arctic waters, much larger than in the Antarctic. The amino-acid sequences used to gain insight into the evolution history of α and β globins of polar fish have clearly shown that Antarctic and Arctic globins have different phylogenies, leading to the hypothesis that the selective pressure of environment stability allows the phylogenetic signal to be maintained in the Antarctic sequences, whereas environmental variability would tend to disrupt this signal in Arctic sequences. 相似文献

One hundred and three specimens of juvenile and mature one-tentacle, relatively small-sized hydromedusae of unclear systematic position were found in the zooplankton collections from the Arctic Ocean. Examination of the mature specimens led to the conclusion that their morphology fits with the last diagnoses of the genus Rhabdoon (Anthomedusae) and that they belong to the species named here as R. reesi. The study of the morphology and cnidome composition of immature medusae suggested them to be young stages of the same species. The comparative study of these juvenile forms with Yakovia polinae, the medusae described previously from the Arctic as a new genus and new species, suggested Y. polinae to be a junior synonym of R. reesi. The distribution of R. reesi in the Arctic Ocean is mapped according to recent and historical records. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the North China Plain

A monitoring network of nine sites was established to determine the spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in the North China Plain (NCP) over a two-year period. The annual bulk deposition of inorganic N in the North China Plain ranged from 18.4 to 38.5 kg/hm2 and averaged 28.0 kg/hm2. The concentration of NH4 -N and NO3--N in rainwater averaged 3.76 and 1.85 mg/L, respectively, which were significantly higher than the values at background sites in China (normally less than 0.5 mg/L). Annual bulk deposition of inorganic N in the Beijing area (32.5 kg/hm2) was higher than that in Shandong and Hebei provinces (21.2 kg/hm2 on an average). Also bulk N deposition was much greater in Dongbeiwang and Fangshan than in Yanqing and Shunyi counties. Significant spatial variation of bulk deposition was observed in the Beijing area because of variation of precipitation, and 60% of bulk deposition occurred from June to September. Bulk deposition of NH4 -N was 2.0 times that of NO3--N deposition at the rural monitoring sites. However, the situation was reversed at the Beijing Academy of Agricultural-Forestry Sciences (BAAFS), the unique urban monitoring site. The results suggest that reduced N in precipitation is dominant in rural regions, but oxidized N is the major form in urban regions. The positive relationship between inorganic N deposition and precipitation can be fitted by a power equation (r2= 0.67), showing an increase of NH4 -N and NO3--N inputs with increased precipitation. Wet deposition of N accounted for 73% of the bulk deposition, implying that dry deposition of N, particularly NH4 -N from dust, is important in the North China Plain. 相似文献

Until recently nothing indicated an unequal sex ratio in the widespread Greenland seed‐bug Nysius groenlandicus (Zetterstedt) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae). However, recently populations more or less devoid of males were discovered in high arctic Northeast Greenland. This initiated an inspection of the entire material of the species collected in Greenland and now preserved at the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. It was found that the sex ratio varied significantly among different locations. In most cases females were most abundant, but males were either scarce or absent only in samples from Northeast Greenland, indicating that here the species reproduces asexually. This paper demonstrates that the differing sex distributions can be explained by climatic factors (temperature, precipitation) and that the degree of continentality (distance from the open sea) promotes female‐biased sex ratios. 相似文献

The relationship between salinity, suspended particulate matter and water clarity in aquatic systems

This work presents and recommends 1) an empirically based new model quantifying the relationship between salinity, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and water clarity (as given by the Secchi depth) and (2) an empirical model for oxygen saturation in the deep-water zone for coastal areas (O2Sat in %). This paper also discusses the many and important roles that SPM plays in aquatic ecosystems and presents comparisons between SPM concentrations in lakes, rivers and coastal areas. Such comparative studies are very informative but not so common. The empirical O2Sat model explains (statistically) 80% of the variability in mean O2Sat values among 23 Baltic coastal areas. The model is based on data on sedimentation of SPM, the percentage of ET areas (areas where erosion and transportation of fine sediments occur), the theoretical deep-water retention time and the mean coastal depth. These two new models have been incorporated into an existing dynamic model for SPM in coastal areas that quantifies all important fluxes of SPM into, within and from coastal areas, such as river inflow, primary production, resuspension, sedimentation, mixing, mineralisation and the SPM exchange between the given coastal area and the sea (or adjacent coastal areas). The modified dynamic SPM model with these two new sub-models has been validated (blind tested) with very good results; the model predictions for Secchi depth, O2Sat and sedimentation are within the uncertainty bands of the empirical data. 相似文献

Question: How is tundra vegetation related to climatic, soil chemical, geological variables and grazing across a very large section of the Eurasian arctic area? We were particularly interested in broad‐scale vegetation‐environment relationships and how well do the patterns conform to climate‐vegetation schemes. Material and Methods: We sampled vegetation in 1132 plots from 16 sites from different parts of the Eurasian tundra. Clustering and ordination techniques were used for analysing compositional patterns. Vegetation‐environment relationships were analysed by fitting of environmental vectors and smooth surfaces onto non‐metric multidimensional scaling scattergrams. Results: Dominant vegetation differentiation was associated with a complex set of environmental variables. A general trend differentiated cold and continental areas from relatively warm and weakly continental areas, and several soil chemical and physical variables were associated with this broad‐scaled differentiation. Especially soil chemical variables related to soil acidity (pH, Ca) showed linear relationships with the dominant vegetation gradient. This was closely related to increasing cryoperturbation, decreasing precipitation and cooler conditions. Remarkable differences among relatively adjacent sites suggest that local factors such as geological properties and lemming grazing may strongly drive vegetation differentiation. Conclusions: Vegetation differentiation in tundra areas conforms to a major ecocline underlain by a complex set of environmental gradients, where precipitation, thermal conditions and soil chemical and physical processes are coupled. However, local factors such as bedrock conditions and lemming grazing may cause marked deviations from the general climate‐vegetation models. Bioremediation is increasingly viewed as an appropriate remediation technology for hydrocarbon-contaminated polar soils. As for all soils, the successful application of bioremediation depends on appropriate biodegradative microbes and environmental conditions in situ. Laboratory studies have confirmed that hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria typically assigned to the genera Rhodococcus, Sphingomonas or Pseudomonas are present in contaminated polar soils. However, as indicated by the persistence of spilled hydrocarbons, environmental conditions in situ are suboptimal for biodegradation in polar soils. Therefore, it is likely that ex situ bioremediation will be the method of choice for ameliorating and controlling the factors limiting microbial activity, i.e. low and fluctuating soil temperatures, low levels of nutrients, and possible alkalinity and low moisture. Care must be taken when adding nutrients to the coarse-textured, low-moisture soils prevalent in continental Antarctica and the high Arctic because excess levels can inhibit hydrocarbon biodegradation by decreasing soil water potentials. Bioremediation experiments conducted on site in the Arctic indicate that land farming and biopiles may be useful approaches for bioremediation of polar soils. 相似文献

The hydroxyl radical (OH·) plays an important role in the environmental chemistry and biogeochemistry of surface waters. OH·
acts as a strong oxidant within the irradiated water column, and affects the bioavailability, cycling, and mineralization
of dissolved organic matter (DOM), the speciation and redox state of important trace metals e.g., iron and copper, and the
fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The generation of this species from irradiated DOM may be especially important
in Arctic surface waters during the boreal summer, which contains high levels of DOM and experiences continual solar irradiance.
Here, we investigate the OH· produced from laser irradiated Arctic DOM isolated from Toolik Lake, AK (68°38′ N, 149°43′ W).
We measured the wavelength dependence of OH· production for aqueous solutions of DOM and report that the greatest OH· production
occurs at wavelengths less than 360 nm. OH· production rates ranged from 1.7 (±0.1)×10−7 M h−1 to 6.4 (±0.2)×10−7 M h−1, with the rate depending on both irradiation wavelength and to a lesser degree the method used to isolate the DOM matrix.
These findings lead to a better understanding of the potentially important photo-oxidation processes that may impact DOM cycling

An integrated field and laboratory study was conducted to quantify the effect of environmental determinants on the activity of sulfate reducers in a freshwater aquifer contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC). Within the contaminated zone, PHC-supported in␣situ sulfate reduction rates varied from 11.58±3.12 to 636±53 nmol cm−3 d−1 and a linear increase (R
2=0.98) in reduction rate was observed with increasing in situ sulfate concentrations suggesting sulfate limitation. Half-saturation concentration (K
s) for sulfate reduction coupled to PHC mineralization was determined for the first time. At two different sites within the␣aquifer, maximum sulfate reduction rate under␣non-limiting conditions (R
max) was 5,000 nmol cm−3 d−1, whereas the retrieved K
s values were 3.5 and 7.5 mM, respectively. The K
s values are the highest ever reported from a natural environment. Furthermore, the K
s values were significantly higher than in situ sulfate concentrations confirming sulfate limited growth. On addition of lactate and formate, sulfate reduction rate increased indicating that reactivity and bioavailability of organic substrate may also have played a role in rate inhibition in certain parts of the aquifer. Experiments with sulfide amendments show statistically minor decrease in sulfate reduction rates on addition of sulfide and analogous increase in sulfide toxicity with increasing sulfide concentrations (0.5–10 mM) was not apparent. 相似文献
