It is widely assumed that the presence of invasive exotic plants causes a negative impact on native biotas. Here, we analyse the correlational patterns between the presence of one of these invasive plants, the South African Hottentot fig, Carpobrotus acinaciformis (L.) L. Bolus (Aizoaceae), and the terrestrial invertebrate species composition of a Mediterranean rocky shore. Variations in invertebrate community were estimated by determining the presence–absence of 94 species in 30 plots along a 2.5 km shoreline. Canonical correspondence analyses revealed that three environmental variables showed significant correlation with the invertebrate presence–absence matrix. Namely, distance to the nearest urban area, soil type, and vegetation type. Presence–absence of the invasive plant was correlated with these environmental variables, but no additional effect on the invertebrate community specifically attributable to the presence of the invasive plant was detected. These facts exemplify the uncertainties in linking the presence of an invasive species with its putative outcomes because they are consistent with the hypothesis that a general gradient of anthropic influence affects the invertebrate species composition, and that the supposed effects of C. acinaciformis on the invertebrate species composition are correlated with (and therefore, indiscernible from) those derived from the existence of such general gradient of anthropic influence.  相似文献

Fungi and arthropods represent some of the most diverse organisms on our planet, yet the ecological relationships between them remain largely unknown. In animals, fungal growth on body surfaces is often hazardous and is known to cause mortality. In contrast, here we report the presence of an apparently non-harmful mycobiome on the cuticle of whip spiders (Arachnida: Amblypygi). The associations are not species-specific and involve a diversity of fungal species, including cosmopolitan and local decomposers as well as entomopathogens. We discuss the ecology of the detected fungal species and hypothesize that the thick epicuticular secretion coat of whip spiders (the cerotegument) promotes fungal growth. It is possible that this relationship is beneficial towards the host if it leads to parasite control or chemical camouflage. Our findings, which are the first from this arthropod lineage, indicate that non-pathogenic interactions between arthropods and fungi may be much more widespread than predicted and call for more studies in this area.  相似文献

In this study, immunohistochemistry on Vibracut sections is used to demonstrate anti-histamine immunoreactivity in the brain of the spider, Cupiennius salei (Keys.) (Ctenidae). We describe a system of histamine-immunoreactive neurons within the central nervous system that consists of six omnisegmental neurons. These histamine-immunoreactive neurons form two subgroups: a dorsal system with two cells per hemisphere and a ventral system with only one cell per hemisphere. The cells have extended arborizations in the motor and sensory areas of all neuromeres in the suboesophageal ganglionic mass. We have also found histamine immunoreactivity in the photoreceptors of C. salei and suggest that histamine is a neurotransmitter of photoreceptors in all arthropods, since it is also known to occur in the photoreceptors of the other main arthropod taxa (Merostomata, Crustacea, and Insecta).  相似文献

Skeletal muscles in the whipscorpion Mastigoproctus giganteus are surveyed and compared with those of several other to clarify the evolutionary morphology and phylogenetic relationships of arachnids. Representatives from 90 muscle groups are described and illustrated, and their possible functions are proposed. Principal results of this analysis include new proposed homologies for the anterior opisthosomal appendages and sclerites in tetrapulmonate arachnids (that is, Trigonotarbida, Araneae, Amblypygi, Uropygi), the discovery that muscular attachments in arthropods can shift from the mesodermal endosternite to the ectodermal exoskeleton, a reconstruction of the evolutionary transformations associated with the apparent uncoupling of pharyngeal and locomotor complexes in the prosoma of Pedipalpi (that is, Amblypygi and Uropygi), and an expanded list of unique synapomorphies supporting the sister-group status of Amblypygi and Uropygi.  相似文献

Heteropachylinae Kury, 1994 is currently considered an early lineage of Gonyleptidae Sundevall, 1833 and includes small harvestmen that occur in the Atlantic Forests, mainly in the Northeast Region of Brazil. The species of Heteropachylinae were spread in different subfamilies until the establishment of the group. As a result of that, until now there were no comparative works on the subfamily in the literature. In this study, the first systematic review for Heteropachylinae was carried out and the first phylogenetic hypothesis for their taxa is proposed, by means of a cladistic approach. A total of 102 morphological characters was coded for 21 terminal taxa: 11 species of Heteropachylinae, two species from the genus Mangaratiba Mello‐Leitão, 1940 (considered as Heteropachylinae before this paper), seven other gonyleptids, and one cosmetid. The data were analysed using heuristic search algorithms, resulting in one most parsimonious tree (280 steps, consistency index = 0.47, retention index = 0.63). A parsimony analysis under implied weights was also performed, resulting in three trees. According to the results, Heteropachylinae is a monophyletic and well‐supported group if Mangaratiba is excluded. This genus should be returned to where it was originally described – Pachylinae. The subfamily distribution is restricted from Ceará to Espírito Santo Brazilian states. Pseudopucrolia Roewer, 1912 is considered a senior synonym of Melloa Roewer, 1930, Thaumatoleptes Roewer, 1930, and Tribunosoma Roewer, 1943. Two species of Heteropachylus Roewer, 1913, Heteropachylus ramphonotus sp. nov. and Heteropachylus gracilis sp. nov. , from Bahia and Espírito Santo Brazilian states, are newly described. Heteropachylus is considered a senior synonym of Chavesincola Soares & Soares, 1946 and Aesotrinoma H. Soares, 1977. A new genus is also described for a new species from Bahia and Espírito Santo Brazilian states, Magnispina neptunus gen. et sp. nov. Gravid female phytoseiid mites, Amblyseius fallacis (Garman), were selected for resistance to permethrin using a table-top Petri dish (PD) technique. After 55 selections, the LC50 of the R population increased 964-fold to 12 241 p.p.m. (PD) and 3.6-fold to 167 p.p.m. by a slide-dip (SD) method. A genetic analysis was conducted to examine the mode of inheritance by a series of single-pair reciprocal interstrain crosses and backcrosses of female F1 progeny. Concentration-mortality regressions (PD) for parental populations showed a 69.4-fold difference between R and S strains. Regressions for F1 females resulting from both interstrain crosses were intermediate between parental strains and not significantly different, showing no obvious maternal effect. Resistance in the R strain was not completely dominant or recessive and the estimated dominance, D, for the F1 females from combined data of both reciprocal crosses was-0.18, for the female R x male S cross it was 0.24 and for the female S x male R cross it was-0.01. We concluded that more than one gene was responsible for the resistance in the selected R strain. No incompatibility was observed in any reciprocal interstrain crosses or backcrosses between the S strain and R strain.  相似文献

Abstract:  The first mygalomorph spiders from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Lagerstätte of Cearà Province, north-east Brazil, are described, from adult males and females, in two new genera and species: Cretadiplura ceara Selden, gen. et sp. nov. and Dinodiplura ambulacra Selden, gen. et sp. nov. They belong to the extant family Dipluridae, hitherto known as fossils only from Tertiary strata; thus this occurrence extends the family record by some 90 myr.  相似文献

The cuticle of arthropods is usually composed of layers of a chitin-protein-microcomposite, a proteinaceous epicuticle and a thin lipid coating. However, in some instances a thick cement layer (cerotegument) covers the cuticle and may produce elaborate microstructures. This has previously been described for millipedes and mites. Here we report the previously unknown presence of a superhydrophobic cerotegument in whip-spiders (Ambypygi) and reveal its variation in ultrastructure and water-repellence between species. We discuss the relevance of found micro-morphological and physical characters for taxonomy and phylogenetics of this group, and the potential biological functions.  相似文献
