ABSTRACT In sagebrush—steppe and other open habitats, power lines can provide perches for raptors and other birds in areas where few natural perches previously existed, with potential negative impacts for nearby prey species, such as greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Between September 2006 and August 2007, we used driving surveys, behavioral-observation surveys, and prey-remains surveys to assess the ability of perch-deterrent devices to minimize raptor and common raven (Corvus corax) activity on a recently constructed transmission line in southwestern Wyoming. All survey methods demonstrated that activity was significantly lower on the deterrent line compared with a nearby control line; however, deterrent devices did not entirely prevent perching. Considering use of cross-arms or pole-tops alone, we sighted 42 raptors and ravens on the deterrent line and 551 on the control line during 192 driving surveys of each line. Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and ravens were the species most commonly observed successfully overcoming deterrent devices. Smaller rough-legged hawks (Buteo lagopus) regularly avoided deterrents by perching on conductors (i.e., wires). We documented much off-line activity near both survey lines and suggest that fewer birds near the deterrent line likely reflected reduced availability of nearby alternate perches. There was a pronounced winter peak in on-line perch use, with the effect more evident on the control line. Behavior surveys corroborated our driving-survey results but were otherwise unproductive. During 549 prey-remains surveys of each line, we found 9 single and 60 grouped prey items near deterrent-line poles, compared with 277 single and 467 grouped items near control-line poles. We observed few sage-grouse in the study area but did witness a likely power line—related, raptor-caused sage-grouse mortality. Overall, our results suggest that perch-deterrent devices can reduce raptor and raven activity on power-line structures, but to determine their utility on entire power-line segments, we suggest managers consider 1) what level of reduction in perch activity is worth the cost, and 2) the availability of alternate perches in the surrounding landscape.  相似文献

Understanding the behavioral ecology of species of conservation concern can help to inform better management. During winters 2011 through 2017, we placed camera traps at stations baited with carrion to investigate characteristics of winter scavenging by golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in eastern Washington and Oregon, USA. Our objectives were to better understand exposure risk of individual eagles to lead contaminants and evaluate factors that affect eagle visitation to carrion to inform measures that reduce lead exposure. We studied photo sequences from 108 traps ( = 2,725 ± 306 [SE] images/trap) and used plumage and physical characteristics to track visitation of 183 individual golden eagles and 90 bald eagles at deer (Odocoileus spp.) carrion until it was totally consumed. At least 1 eagle visited 76% of traps ( = 2.5 ± 0.3 unique eagles/trap). On average, an eagle visited a trap 3.4 ± 0.2 times (range = 1–19 visits) over 1.9 ± 0.1 days (range = 1–9 days). We used general linear mixed models to identify influences on number of eagle visits and pooled visit duration. Individual golden eagles visited carrion about 25% more often and 50% longer than bald eagles, and individual juvenile eagles visited carrion more often and longer than immature and adult eagles. On average, an eagle made an additional visit to carrion for every golden eagle that came to the same trap. Eagles spent less time at offal ( = 26.2 ± 6.4 min) than at a whole carcass ( = 92.9 ± 7.5 min), and understory vegetation immediately surrounding carrion was associated with a 30% reduction in visitation time. In the Pacific Northwest during winter, adult and juvenile golden eagles, by virtue of their abundance and visitation to carrion compared to the immature age class and bald eagles of all ages, have the highest potential for exposure to anthropogenic effects from carrion visitation. Concealment of offal piles in vegetation may reduce, but not eliminate, eagle use because of competing scavengers that expose carrion locations. We found no evidence that carrion proximity to nearest known nests, topography, or snow cover affect visitation by eagles. Thus, short of using alternative ammunition to lead, we recommend burial or removal of offal from hunter-killed ungulates. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Land abandonment and afforestation are causing considerable forest expansion in the Alpine chain, with consequent loss of Alpine pastures, the main foraging habitat for Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos. A population of 46 pairs of Golden Eagles was systematically surveyed between 1984 and 1989 in the central-eastern Italian Alps. We measured the amount of woodland within the potential hunting range of 36 pairs. Nearest-neighbour distance was correlated positively with the extent of woodland within the potential hunting range. Productivity was not significantly affected by the amount of woodland within the potential for-aging range. At current rates of forest expansion, such data suggest a 5–9% density decline in the next 20 years. However, increasing food supply and decreasing human persecution could be masking current effects of habitat loss.  相似文献

Endometriosis can impair fertility by reducing ovarian reserve and the production of good-quality oocytes. The surgical removal of endometriotic lesions is generally recommended for women who wish to conceive. In this paper we studied whether ovarian cortex adjacent to excised small (diameter ≤ 4 cm) endometriotic cyst (here referred as Cortex Surrounding Endometriotic Cyst, CSEC) showed signs of tissue damages by evaluating the expression of proteins involved in DNA repair and apoptosis. To this end, phosphorylated H2A.X, Chk1 and 2, ATM and ATR, Bcl-2, Bid, phosphorylated and total p53, caspases (9, 8 and 3), XIAP, phosphorylated and total NFκB were analyzed by western blot. Results showed that caspase 8, XIAP, p53/p-p53 and NFκB were more abundantly expressed in all samples of CSEC group in comparison with ovarian cortex of controls. Conversely, the levels of the other proteins were comparable between the two groups. In conclusion, these results suggest that NFκB, caspase 8 and p53/p-p53 elevated expressions in samples of CSEC can be considered as an early sign of tissue injury, indicating that ovarian cortex is already sensitized to apoptosis and inflammation. Therefore, excision of EC should occur very early, to avoid further ovarian damages.  相似文献

Aims Different aspects of soaring‐bird migration are influenced by weather. However, the relationship between weather and the onset of soaring‐bird migration, particularly in autumn, is not clear. Although long‐term migration counts are often unavailable near the breeding areas of many soaring birds in the western Palaearctic, soaring‐bird migration has been systematically monitored in Israel, a region where populations from large geographical areas converge. This study tests several fundamental hypotheses regarding the onset of migration and explores the connection between weather, migration onset and arrival at a distant site. Location Globally gridded meteorological data from the breeding areas in north‐eastern Europe were used as predictive variables in relation to the arrival of soaring migrants in Israel. Methods Inverse modelling was used to study the temporal and spatial influence of weather on initiation of migration based on autumn soaring‐bird migration counts in Israel. Numerous combinations of migration duration and temporal influence of meteorological variables (temperature, sea‐level pressure and precipitable water) were tested with different models for meteorological sensitivity. Results The day of arrival in Israel of white storks, honey buzzards, Levant sparrowhawks and lesser spotted eagles was significantly and strongly related to meteorological conditions in the breeding area days or even weeks before arrival in Israel. The cumulative number of days or cumulative value above or below a meteorological threshold performed significantly better than other models tested. Models provided reliable estimates of migration duration for each species. Main conclusions The meteorological triggers of migration at the breeding grounds differed between species and were related to deteriorating living conditions and deteriorating migratory flight conditions. Soaring birds are sensitive to meteorological triggers at the same period every year and their temporal response to weather appears to be constrained by their annual routine.  相似文献

Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) are rare winter residents in eastern North America, with most found along the Appalachian Mountains and few reported on the coastal plain of the Carolinas. We used remote cameras baited with wild pig (Sus scrofa) and white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) carcasses to detect, age, and individually identify Golden Eagles on the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site on the coastal plain of South Carolina. We identified eight individual Golden Eagles during the winters of 2013–2014 and 2014–2015, with one detected during both winters. We detected eagles for 19 and 66 calendar days during the winters of 2013–2014 and 2014–2015, respectively, with two adult eagles detected for 30 and 31 calendar days in 2014–2015. Eagles typically scavenged on carcasses for a few days, left, and then returned when cameras were baited with another carcass, suggesting they had remained in the area. These observations suggest that large tracts of forests on the coastal plain may be important wintering areas for some Golden Eagles and, further, that other areas in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States may also harbor wintering eagles. Identification of wintering areas of Golden Eagles in the east will be an important step in the conservation of this protected species, and camera traps baited with carcasses can be an effective tool for such work.  相似文献

1. We report on a simulation study of increasing and stable populations working under two different hypotheses of density dependence of fecundity: the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis (HHH) and the individual adjustment hypothesis (IAH). Our aim is to find critical differences between the two regulatory hypotheses in natural populations. 2. Populations under HHH show a strong negative relationship between fecundity and the coefficient of variation of fecundity. We also found a strong negative relationship between fecundity and skewness, demonstrating that, as fecundity decreases, the form of the distribution of brood sizes changes, being more left-skewed due to more territories failing to produce any offspring. 3. This strong relationship was found only in the simulations of populations under HHH; whether increasing or stable, and under different ratios of good: poor territories and different population sizes. In contrast, no relationship between mean fecundity and skewness was found among simulations under IAH. 4. Populations under IAH also showed a significant relationship between mean fecundity and the coefficient of variation of fecundity, but with a lower slope than in populations under HHH. 5. In conclusion, skewness was found to be an adequate critical test that showed significant and strong relationships with mean fecundity only in populations under HHH, whether increasing or stable. This test is useful for species with a discrete distribution of offspring with a small number of integer categories, including most of the bird and mammal species.  相似文献
