In West Virginia, USA, there are 24 conservation easement program wetlands enrolled in the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP). These wetlands are located on private agricultural land and are passively managed. Due to their location within fragmented agricultural areas, wetlands enrolled in ACEP in West Virginia have the potential to add wetland ecosystem services in areas that are lacking these features. We evaluated ACEP wetlands compared to reference wetlands on public land in West Virginia by using surrounding land cover, vegetative cover, and wetland features and stressors such as the presence or absence of erosion, upland inclusion, algal mats, and evidence of impacts from the surrounding landscape as surrogate measurements of wetland function on 13 ACEP wetlands and 10 reference wetlands. ACEP wetlands had higher percentages of tree coverage and a higher proportion of agricultural land in the areas immediately surrounding the wetland. Reference wetlands had higher percent coverage of emergent vegetation and had a higher proportion of forest in the immediate landscape. Our findings suggest that ACEP wetlands provide valuable early successional and forested wetland cover in a state that is largely forested. Because of this, it is important to maintain and even expand ACEP in West Virginia to continue providing a valuable source of early successional wetland habitat.  相似文献

Summary The mycorrhizal associations of Rhododendron maximum in the southern Appalachian mountains were studied in relation to the supply and demand of phosphate at three altitudes. A variety of mycorrhizal associations are described together with the ability of the differing mycorrhizal types to produce phosphatase enzyme, which was inversely related to the availability of inorganic phosphate determined by a root bioassay, as Ectomycorrhizal associations were shown to have a higher phosphatase production potential than other mycorrhizas. The availability of inorganic phosphate at different altitudes is related to turnover of organic matter and fixation capacity of the mineral soil. It is speculated that the ability of R. maximum to associate with a range of mycorrhizal associates is likely to improve species' fitness and enhance its competitive ability.  相似文献

1. Understanding relationships between resource and consumer diversity is essential to predicting how changes in resource diversity might affect several trophic levels and overall ecosystem functioning. 2. We tested for the effects of leaf litter species diversity (i.e. litter mixing) on litter mass remaining and macroinvertebrate communities (taxon diversity, abundance and biomass) during breakdown in a detritus‐based headwater stream (North Carolina, U.S.A.). We used full‐factorial analyses of single‐ and mixed‐species litter from dominant riparian tree species with distinct leaf chemistries [red maple (Acer rubrum), tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), chestnut oak (Quercus prinus) and rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum)] to test for additivity (single‐species litter presence/absence effects) and non‐additivity (emergent effects of litter species interactions). 3. Significant non‐additive effects of litter mixing on litter mass remaining were explained by species composition, but not richness, and litter‐mixing effects were variable throughout breakdown. Specifically, small differences in observed versus expected litter mass remaining were measured on day 14; whereas observed litter mass remaining in mixed‐species leaf packs was significantly higher on day 70 and lower on day 118 than expected from data for single‐species leaf packs. 4. Litter mixing had non‐additive effects on macroinvertebrate community structure. The number of species in litter mixtures (two to four), but not litter species composition, was a significant predictor of the dominance of particular macroinvertebrates (i.e. indicator taxa) within mixed‐species packs. 5. In addition, the presence/absence of high‐ (L. tulipifera) and low‐quality (R. maximum) litter had additive effects on macroinvertebrate taxon richness, abundance and biomass. The presence of L. tulipifera litter had both positive (synergistic) and negative (antagonistic) effects on invertebrate taxon richness, that varied during breakdown but were not related to litter chemistry. In contrast, the presence/absence of L. tulipifera had a negative relationship with total macroinvertebrate biomass (due to low leaf mass remaining when L. tulipifera was present and higher condensed and hydrolysable tannins associated with leaf packs lacking L. tulipifera). Macroinvertebrate abundance was consistently lower when R. maximum was present, which was partially explained by litter chemistry [e.g., high concentrations of lignin, condensed tannins, hydrolysable tannins and total phenolics and high carbon to nutrient (N and P) ratios]. 6. The bottom‐up effects of litter species diversity on stream macroinvertebrates and litter breakdown are different, which suggests that structural attributes of macroinvertebrate communities may only partially explain the effects of litter‐mixing on organic matter processing in streams. In addition, stream macroinvertebrates colonising decomposing litter are influenced by resource diversity as well as resource availability. Broad‐scale shifts in riparian tree species composition will alter litter inputs to streams, and our results suggest that changes in the diversity and availability of terrestrial litter may alter stream food webs and organic matter processing.  相似文献

Traces interpreted as Skolithos sp. in a Glossifungites ichnofacies occur in the upper part of the Beans Gap Claystone paleosol, in association with a Late Ordovician marine erosional surface. Paleosol color and whole‐rock chemistry are distinctly different in the vicinity of burrows, which are enveloped by olive gray mottles, 1 to 10 cm in diameter, in which total iron (measured as Fe2O3) is 30% lower than in grayish red, “unaltered”; claystone.

Post‐pedogenic bioturbation increased permeability locally and permitted the introduction of marine fluids and coarser sediment into the top of the paleosol. Anaerobic microbial decay of organic matter in the burrows and surrounding claystone permitted reduction (and mobilization) of formerly oxidized iron, which then combined with marine‐derived sulfate to form pyrite, both within burrows and along oxidation‐reduction fronts in the claystone proximal to burrows. Pyrite was later converted to hematite as a result of outcrop‐related oxidation by meteoric water.

Paleosols formed in coastal marine settings are especially susceptible to early diagenetic alteration related to marine hydromorphism. Differentiating these ichnologic and diagenetic effects from true pedogenic ones is essential when interpreting paleosols in paralic sequences.  相似文献

In this study, we use 12 months of data from 11 ant assemblages to test whether seasonal variation in ant diversity is governed by either the structuring influences of interspecific competition or environmental conditions. Because the importance of competition might vary along environmental gradients, we also test whether the signature of competition depends on elevation. We find little evidence that competition structures the seasonal patterns of activity in the ant assemblages considered, but find support for the effects of temperature on seasonal patterns of diversity, especially at low-elevation sites. Although, in general, both competition and the environment interact to structure ant assemblages, our results suggest that environmental conditions are the primary force structuring the seasonal activity of the ant assemblages studied here.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 191–201.  相似文献

Little ecological information is available on small mammals inhabiting wetlands in the southern Appalachian mountains of the USA. These wetland systems are becoming rare features in southern landscapes due to human activities. We investigated the small mammal fauna and examined the microhabitat associations of the two most abundant species in a southern Appalachian fen. Four species of small mammals were captured: the meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius), short-tailed shrew ( Blarina brevicauda), white-footed mouse ( Peromyscus leucopus), and golden mouse ( Ochrotomys nuttalli). Peromyscus and Ochrotomys, which were caught in the largest numbers, preferred sites characterized by moderate herbaceous cover and substantial canopy closure. Peromyscus, however, selected areas with greater canopy closure and higher tree densities, suggesting that they are greater habitat specialists than Ochrotomys in this wetland community.  相似文献

ABSTRACT White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) browsing in forest regeneration sites can affect current and future stand structure and species composition. Removal of deer social units (localized management) has been proposed as a strategy to alleviate deer overbrowsing in forest systems. We conducted an experimental localized removal in a high-density deer population in the central Appalachians of West Virginia, USA, during winter 2002. We removed 51 deer within a 1.1-km2 area that encompassed 2 forest regeneration sites (14 ha). During the summer following removal, we detected decreases in distance from the removal area in 8 of 30 (26.7%) adult females having pretreatment mean telemetry locations <2.5 km from the center of the removal area. We measured browsing rates during the summers of 2001–2004 from forest regeneration sites to examine efficacy of localized management. Browsing rates declined annually in both removal and control areas, due in part to increased timber harvesting on the larger study site, suggesting that increasing forage availability may be more effective at reducing impacts on forest regeneration than localized reductions in deer populations. Three years after the initial removal, we removed an additional 31 deer from the original 1.1-km2 removal area. Home range shifts of adjacent deer coupled with the large number of animals collected in the second removal suggests that localized management only produces temporary voids within high-density deer herds. Localized management may not effectively reduce negative impacts of deer in areas of high deer density.  相似文献

Abstract: We compared the effects of 3 fuel reduction techniques and a control on breeding birds during 2001-2005 using 50-m point counts. Four experimental units, each >14 ha, were contained within each of 3 replicate blocks at the Green River Game Land, Polk County, North Carolina, USA. Treatments were 1) prescribed burn, 2) mechanical understory reduction (chainsaw-felling of shrubs and small trees), 3) mechanical + burn, and 4) controls. We conducted mechanical treatments in winter 2001-2002 and prescribed burns in spring 2003. Tall shrub cover was substantially reduced in all treatments compared to controls. Tree mortality and canopy openness was highest in the mechanical + burn treatment after burning, likely due to higher fuel loading and hotter burns; tree mortality increased with time. Many bird species did not detectably decrease or increase in response to treatments. Species richness, total bird density, and some species, including indigo buntings (Passerina cyanea) and eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis), increased in the mechanical + burn treatment after a 1-year to 2-year delay; eastern woodpewees (Contopus virens) increased immediately after treatment. Hooded warblers (Wilsonia citrina), black-and-white warblers (Mniotilta varia), and worm-eating warblers (Helmitheros vermivorus) declined temporarily in some or all treatments, likely in response to understory and (or) leaf litter depth reductions. Densities of most species affected by treatments varied with shrub cover, tree or snag density, or leaf litter depth. High snag availability, open conditions, and a higher density of flying insects in the mechanical + burn treatment likely contributed to increased bird density and species richness. In our study, fuel reduction treatments that left the canopy intact, such as low-intensity prescribed fire or mechanical understory removal, had few detectable effects on breeding birds compared to the mechanical + burn treatment. High-intensity burning with heavy tree-kill, as occurred in our mechanical + burn treatment, can be used as a management tool to increase densities of birds associated with open habitat while retaining many forest and generalist species, but may have short-term adverse effects on some species that are associated with the ground- or shrub-strata for nesting and foraging.  相似文献
