Most studies aiming to determine the beneficial effect of ants on plants simply consider the effects of the presence or exclusion of ants on plant yield. This approach is often inadequate, however, as ants interact with both non-tended herbivores and tended Homoptera. Moreover, the interaction with these groups of organisms is dependent on ant density, and these functional relationships are likely to be non-linear. A model is presented here that segregates plant herbivores into two categories depending on the sign of their numerical response to ants (myrmecophiles increase with ants, non-tended herbivores decline). The changes in these two components of herbivores with increasing ant density and the resulting implications for ant-plant mutualisms are considered. It emerges that a wide range of ant densities needs to be considered as the interaction sign (mutualism or parasitism) and strength is likely to change with ant density. The model is used to interpret the results of an experimental study that varied levels of Aphis fabae infestation and Lasius niger ant attendance on Vicia faba bean plants. Increasing ant density consistently reduced plant fitness and thus, in this location, the interaction between the ants and the plant can be considered parasitic. In the Vicia faba system, these costs of ants are unlikely to be offset by other beneficial agents (e.g., parasitoids), which also visit extrafloral nectaries.  相似文献

Abstract:  The effects of sibling egg cannibalism on sex-dependent development and adult body weight were determined by rearing simultaneously two groups of sibling larvae of ladybirds, viz. Propylea dissecta and Coccinella transversalis individually. The first group included cannibals (i.e. neonates, which took a sibling egg as the first meal and later fed on aphids, Aphis craccivora ) and the other included non-cannibals (reared exclusively on aphids). The cannibal larvae developed faster with heavier adults than non-cannibals. This expedited development and nutritional advantage (increased body weight) was greater in first instars indicating maximum benefit of sibling cannibalism to them. Sibling cannibalism was relatively more advantageous to male than to female ladybirds. Laboratory data predict that the larger size of adults in the field could possibly be the result of sibling egg cannibalism at the neonate level.  相似文献

Nearly 5 000 aphid species damage crops, either by sucking plant sap or as disease‐transmitting vectors. Microsatellites are used for understanding molecular diversity and eco‐geographical relationships among aphid species. Expressed sequence tag (EST)‐microsatellite motifs were identified through an in silico approach using inbuilt simple sequence repeat mining tools in aphid EST dataset. Microsatellite mining revealed one in every five aphid genes as containing a repeat motif, and out of 9 290 EST microsatellites mined from Aphis gossypii Glover and Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (both Hemiptera: Aphididae), 80% were of A and/or T (AT, ATA, AAT, AATA, and ATTT) motifs, and the rest contained G and/or C motifs. All microsatellite sequences were annotated using BLAST. Primers for EST microsatellites were designed using the Primer 3.0 tool. 106 primer pairs of both dinucleotide repeats (DNRs) and trinucleotide repeats (TNRs), representing open reading frames (ORFs) and untranslated regions (UTRs), were synthesized to amplify 15 aphid species belonging to the subfamily Aphidinae, collected from diverse hosts. Four hundred forty‐five polymorphic alleles were amplified. Fifty TNR and 23 DNR microsatellites amplified across the species studied. Polymorphism information content values of microsatellites ranged from 0.23 to 0.91, amplifying 2–16 alleles. Genetic similarity indices were estimated using the ‘NTSYS‐pc’ software package. Unweighted pair group with arithmetic mean and principal component analysis resolved taxonomic relationships of the aphid species studied. The new aphid microsatellites developed will provide valuable information to researchers to study Indian aphid species diversity and genetic relationships.  相似文献

The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), poses a new threat to soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill (Fabaceae), production in the north central USA. As H. halys continues to spread and increase in abundance in the region, the interaction between H. halys and management tactics deployed for other pests must be determined. Currently, the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is the most abundant and damaging insect pest of soybean in the region. Aphid‐resistant soybean, mainly with the Rag1 gene, is commercially available for management of A. glycines. Here, experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of Rag1 aphid‐resistant soybean on the mortality, development, and preference of H. halys. In a no‐choice test, mortality of H. halys reared on Rag1 aphid‐resistant soybean pods was significantly lower than when reared on aphid‐susceptible soybean pods (28 vs. 53%). Development time, adult weight, and proportion females of surviving adults did not differ when reared on Rag1 aphid‐resistant or aphid‐susceptible soybean pods. In choice tests, H. halys exhibited a preference for Rag1 aphid‐resistant over aphid‐susceptible soybean pods after 4 h, but not after 24 h. Halyomorpha halys exhibited no preference when tested with vegetative‐stage or reproductive‐stage soybean plants. The preference by H. halys for Rag1 aphid‐resistant soybean pods and the decreased mortality when reared on these pods suggests that the use of Rag1 aphid‐resistant soybean may favor this emerging pest in the north central USA.  相似文献

The final second of the landing approach of black bean aphids, Aphis fabae, was analysed in three dimensions using video techniques. A yellow landing platform was placed upwind or downwind from aphids aggregating under a ceiling light in a laboratory wind tunnel with 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 cm s–1 wind speeds, and up-tunnel or down-tunnel in still air. As individual aphids flew to the platform, body orientation (assessed by direct observation) was predominantly into-wind whether the initial flight direction to the landing platform was upwind or downwind. A greater proportion showed into-wind body orientation as wind speed increased. Flight track parameters which differed significantly between wind speeds were the track length, linear start to finish distance, linearity index, horizontal ground speed, speed vertical to the ground, vertical turning rate, and horizontal turning rate. The position of the landing platform was important for track length, linear start to finish distance, horizontal ground speed, three-dimensional turning rate, horizontal turning rate, vertical turning rate, and sinuosity. As wind speed increased above 30 cm s–1 the ground speed became more consistent and indicated considerable variation in air speed to adjust for ground speed. For the majority of aphids there was a strong preference (88%) for into-wind landings with initial upwind directed flight, while for downwind flights a significant number (55%) of insects reversed initial flight direction and landed into-wind. Field recorded landings showed that 66% of aphids landed into-wind and there was a mean bearing to the wind of 71 ± 42°, a similar finding to wind-tunnel studies.  相似文献

1. Aphids show a range of associations with ants from nonattendance to obligate myrmecophily. Aphis fabae cirsiiacanthoides is facultatively associated with ants, while Symydobius oblongus is an obligate myrmecophile. The selection pressures that have shaped these associations are unknown. 2. The consequences for these aphids of their different degrees of associations with ants were determined, in terms of costs and benefits to individuals and colonies in laboratory and field experiments. In the laboratory, individuals of A. f. cirsiiacanthoides performed worse and those of Symydobius oblongus performed better when attended by the ant Lasius niger than when unattended. For example, when ant-attended, A. f. cirsiiacanthoides developed more slowly, were smaller, and invested less in gonads, whereas S. oblongus developed more quickly, were larger, and invested more in gonads. In addition, the ant regulated the population size of S. oblongus to an average of 50–70 individuals per birch sapling by removing aphids, but did not regulate the population size of A. f. cirsiiacanthoides. 3. Under field conditions, ant-attended colonies of both A. f. cirsiiacanthoides and S. oblongus achieved higher peak numbers and lasted longer, and ant-attended colonies of A. f. cirsiiacanthoides produced more alate dispersers than unattended colonies. 4. The implications of divergent selection pressures for the development of myrmecophily in aphids are discussed.  相似文献

用氧化乐果对室内敏感品系棉蚜Aphis gossypii (Glover)进行抗性选育,经24代筛选,抗性指数达到124.7倍。以α-乙酸萘酯(α-NA)为底物,比较了氧化乐果敏感和抗性品系棉蚜羧酸酯酶的比活力,发现抗性品系羧酸酯酶比活力明显小于敏感品系。对这两个品系的羧酸酯酶基因进行了克隆,通过对抗性和敏感品系羧酸酯酶基因核苷酸序列及推导的氨基酸序列比较,发现抗性品系有4个氨基酸残基发生了替代 (His104→Arg, Ala128→Val, Thr333→Asp, Lys484→Arg)。对其蛋白质三维结构分析推测只有His104→Arg的替代是位于其活性中心。棉蚜氧化乐果敏感和抗性品系羧酸酯酶基因cDNA全长的GenBank登录号分别为AY485216和AY485214。  相似文献

为明确转Bt基因抗虫棉对捕食性天敌的生态效应 ,比较了 2种转Bt基因抗虫棉 (GK-1 2和新棉99B)和 1种常规棉上的棉蚜Chrysopaformosa对丽草蛉Aphisgossypii发育和繁殖的影响。结果表明 ,(1 )与取食常规棉泗棉 3号上棉蚜的对照相比 ,取食转Bt基因抗虫棉GK- 1 2上棉蚜的第 1代和第 2代丽草蛉 ,其幼虫期和茧期的死亡率、幼虫和茧的发育历期、茧重及成虫性比等均与对照无显著差异 ;但第 1代成虫的产卵量减少了 2 88 0粒 ,与对照差异显著 (P <0 . 0 1 ) ;第 2代成虫所产卵的孵化率为 64. 0 % ,显著低于对照的 77. 7% (P <0 0 1 )。 (2 ) 2个品种的Bt棉对丽草蛉发育和繁殖的影响也略有差异。与取食GK 1 2上棉蚜的个体相比 ,取食新棉 99B上蚜虫的第 1代丽草蛉 ,其幼虫发育历期缩短了 0 . 6d(P <0 0 1 ) ,茧期缩短了 0 . 7d(P <0 . 0 1 ) ,茧重降低了 1 . 2mg(P <0 .0 1 ) ,幼虫期和茧期的死亡率、茧重以及成虫性比等则无显著差异 ;雌成虫产卵前期、产卵期、产卵量和寿命等繁殖学特性也无显著差异 ,但其成虫所产卵的孵化率为 65. 0 % ,显著低于取食GK- 1 2上棉蚜的处理 (72 . 7% ,P <0. 0 1 )。分别取食 2种Bt棉上的棉蚜 ,对第 2代丽草蛉的发育和繁殖的影响差异则较小。  相似文献

The degree to which resident biota can inhibit the ability of an introduced biological control agent to establish and be effective is termed biotic interference. Studying biotic interference prior to a release using the actual agent is logistically difficult, however, due to quarantine restrictions. An alternative solution is to study biotic interference against a surrogate species in the intended range of introduction, with the expectation that biotic interference against the actual agent will be similar. This study assessed how biotic interference, mostly by generalist predators, may affect establishment of classical biological control agents of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, in North America. The parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck was used as a surrogate for Asian aphidiine braconids such as Binodoxys communis (Gahan). We conducted a factorial field experiment that measured the effect of releasing A. colemani and of excluding resident natural enemies using field cages on soybean aphid populations. We also conducted molecular gut-contents analyses on predators collected in release plots to determine which species fed upon A. colemani. Releasing A. colemani in open field plots increased soybean aphid control beyond that observed in open field plots alone, despite indications that intraguild predation of A. colemani occurred. Thus, biotic interference was not sufficient to eliminate the contribution of A. colemani on soybean aphid suppression during the course of our experiment. Molecular gut-contents analysis revealed that at least two predators, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) and Chrysoperla carnea Stephens, engaged in intraguild predation against A. colemani. The prolonged effect of intraguild predation on parasitoid establishment remains to be determined.  相似文献

Habitat selection by dispersers is the focus of much theoretical models, most of which are based on the assumption of negative density dependence. The archetype of these models is the ideal free distribution, characterized by an evolutionary stable state where more competitors aggregate in better habitats, so that the fitness benefit of resource abundance is equally offset by the cost of competition in all habitats. In this study, we used parentage analysis on microsatellite genotypes to test the ideal free distribution in a natural population of aphid parasitoids. Parentage analysis was conducted on parasitoids emerging from aphid colonies. We inferred the number of foundress females which had reproduced in each colony, as well as the number of offspring for each foundress. As predicted by the ideal free distribution, the number of offspring per foundress per colony did not depend on the number of hosts per colony. However, contrary to ideal free distribution predictions, it was affected by the number of foundresses per colony. In surprising contrast with the basic assumption of negative density dependence, individual fitness increased with the number of foundresses. Moreover, parentage analysis revealed a very low number of offspring per foundress per colony (mean = 1.8). This observed distribution questions the validity of classical models of habitat choice based on competition. Indeed, our results provide a new illustration reinforcing a growing body of theory and data on positive density dependence. Our results also suggest that the avoidance of hyperparasitism and predation, although generally neglected, may shape the distribution of parasitoids in the field.  相似文献
