Quercetin and other flavonoids have been reported to exhibit both antioxidant and pro‐oxidant properties. Most studies about the pro‐oxidative ability were conducted in the presence of metal ions, and the essential functional moiety of quercetin responsible for the pro‐oxidative effect is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the pro‐oxidative abilities in the absence of metal ions of two quercetin derivatives, i.e., quercetin‐3′‐O‐β‐D ‐glucoside ( 1 ) and quercetin‐3‐O‐β‐D ‐glucoside ( 2 ), by assessing DNA cleavage and HO.‐radical production. The binding mode between these compounds and DNA was studied by fluorescence and viscometric titrations. The results showed that 1 can efficiently induce oxidative damage to plasmid DNA, while 2 shows poor activity. Both 1 and 2 bind to DNA via groove‐binding. These results proved that the α‐hydroxy‐β‐oxo‐α,β‐enone moiety contributes to the pro‐oxidative activity of quercetin. 相似文献

Male Corncrakes Crex crex extend their home ranges by visiting the territories of neighbouring males
Capsule Radiotracked male Corncrake often intruded on the territories of neighbouring males. Aims To test that intruders' visits are goal-directed, not just a by-product of extended spatial activity during daylight hours. Methods Using radiotelemetry, we sampled a total of 20 three-day home ranges from 11 tagged males. We recorded daily vocal activity and used a permutation test to see if the movements of tracked males were independent of the position of neighbouring males. Results The majority of males who had a neighbouring male, up to approximately 600 m from their night calling site, undertook goal-directed visits to the neighbour's territory. Males undertook these visits every day, or every other day, when the neighbours were close. Males undertook visits approximately once every three days when they were more distant. The time spent in the neighbour's territory was longest where the distance between night calling sites was about 200 m. Males tended to be silent in neighbour's territory, apparently to prevent confrontation. Otherwise the distance of neighbouring males did not significantly affect daytime vocal activity. Visiting males tended to sing more often in their home territories. Conclusions Daily movement of the majority of males was towards the neighbouring male's calling site. We suggest that the purpose of these visits was to seek females. These males may try to drive a female into their territory or gain extra-pair copulation. 相似文献

When kinetin was applied to the source organ (flag leaf) of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna), foliar senescence was delayed and grain yield per plant (as evidenced by grain weight, grain/straw weight ratio and 1,000 grain growth) was increased through the increase of sink activity (increase in dry weight of the grains/plant), duration of sink capacity as well as photosynthetic ability of the glumes (as determined by the chlorophyll content of the glumes of the developing grains). However, application of kinetin to the sink organs (fruits), promoted senescence of the source but increased the yield by increasing the sink capacity and 1,000 grain growth mostly at the earlier stage of reproductive development. Lower sterility percentage was associated with higher grain yield of the plant by kinetin treatments. ABA applied either to the source or the sink promoted leaf senescence and reduced the grain yield by reducing the sink activity, harvest index, sink capacity duration and increasing the sterility percentage. Thousand grain dry weight at harvest did not vary significantly amongst the treatments. It was concluded that nutrient drainage was associated with the correlative influence of fruit on the monocarpic senescence of rice plant and that a competetion for differential allocation of cytokinin and ABA in the source and sink organs initiates this senescence syndrome. 相似文献

Chemical compositions and antimicrobial activities of four different Anatolian propolis samples 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Propolis means a gum that is gathered by bees from various plants. It is known for its biological properties, having antibacterial, antifungal and healing properties. The aims of this study were to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of four different Anatolian propolis samples on different groups of microorganisms including some oral pathogens and comparison between their chemical compositions. Ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) were prepared from four different Anatolian propolis samples and examined whether EEP inhibit the growth of the test microorganisms or not. For the antimicrobial activity assays, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined by using macrodilution method. The MIC values of the most effective propolis (TB) were 2 microg/ml for Streptococcus sobrinus and Enterococcus faecalis, 4 microg/ml for Micrococcus luteus, Candida albicans and C. krusei, 8 microg/ml for Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterobacter aerogenes, 16 microg/ml for Escherichia coli and C. tropicalis and 32 microg/ml for Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The chemical compositions of EEP's were determined by high-temperature high-resolution gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The main compounds of four Anatolian propolis samples were flavonoids such as pinocembrin, pinostropin, isalpinin, pinobanksin, quercetin, naringenin, galangine and chrysin. Although propolis samples were collected from different regions of Anatolia all showed significant antimicrobial activity against the Gram positive bacteria and yeasts. Propolis can prevent dental caries since it demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and C. albicans, which involves in oral diseases. 相似文献

Seven 9,10-seco-9,19-cyclolanostane arabinosides, named podocarpasides A-G (1-7), were isolated from the roots of Actaea podocarpa DC., a species closely related to black cohosh (a well known dietary supplement). Their structures were determined with the help of spectroscopic data including extensive 2D NMR spectroscopy. The isolates were found inactive, when tested for cytotoxic, estrogenic, and antioxidant activities in cell based assays. They were also tested for anticomplement activity against the classical pathway of complement system and only podocarpaside C (3) inhibited modest complement activity with an IC50 value of 200 microM. 相似文献

为了研究红缘天牛成虫对寄主植物杏树衰弱树及木段挥发物的生理及行为反应,本文用6种挥发物,分别以不同浓度的单一组份对红缘天牛进行了电生理和行为测试;又在这6种单组份化合物对天牛行为选择表现为引诱活性的浓度范围内选择EAG值最高的浓度,以4-6种化合物等体积制成7种组合配方进行EAG和行为测试。结果表明:单一组份R-柠檬烯、反-2-己烯醛、丁酸丁酯、S-柠檬烯、异戊醇和3-蒈烯等6种单一化合物在预设的8个浓度梯度范围内,都能引起红缘天牛产生一定的生理反应,但行为选择实验的结果没有统计学意义。7种组合配方中,R4对红缘天牛成虫引诱活性最强(P0.01),引诱率达到76.67%,R1次之(P0.05),R4与R1的区别在于增加了丁酸丁酯;即丁酸丁酯在R4配方中具有明显的增效作用。 相似文献

We studied the diet, habitat use, and ranging behavior of 1 group of Callimico goeldii (callimicos) over 12 mo in northwestern Bolivia. The group’s diet was comprised of fungi (39%), fruits (31%), arthropods
(14%), exudates (14%), and other matter (2%). Callimicos concentrated their ranging activities in secondary forest (50%),
primary forest with dense understory (30%), and bamboo (17%) habitats. The group’s total home range was 114 ha; on average
they used 38.4 ha/ mo and had a day range of 925 m. Monthly average day ranges—but not monthly home ranges—increased as frugivory
declined, suggesting that subjects foraged on fungi and exudates by rechecking resources within a core area, making their
day ranges longer than during months when they concentrated on fruit resources. The callimicos formed polyspecific associations
with tamarins (Saguinus labiatus and S. fuscicollis) during 81% of observations. Day ranges increased in months with higher association rates which appears to result from the
callimicos using a broader set of habitats when with tamarins than when alone. The ranging pattern of callimicos appears to
be influenced primarily by 3 factors: their seasonal shift in diet requires that they forage in a variety of habitats across
the year; their depletion of resources causes them to shift their core area over time; and their lack of territorial behavior
eliminates the need to patrol boundaries as part of their daily movement. As a result, callimicos differ from many other callitrichids

Physical activity is one major positive factor with regard to enhancing life quality, as it can improve the whole psychological, social, and physical health conditions. Current measures such as social distancing are focused on preventing the viral spread. However, the consequences on other areas are yet to be investigated. Elderly, people with chronic diseases, obese, and others benefit largely from exercise from the perspective of improved health, and preventive measures can drastically improve daily living. Environmental conditions are known to affect the reproductive fitness of insects, as do host plants. Although the highly specialized bracts of Himalayan ‘glasshouse’ plants are thought to be an adaptive morphology that allows the plant to reproduce in harsh alpine environments, little information appears to exist concerning the benefit of these bracts for the pollinating insects. In this study, we examine whether the semi‐translucent bracts of Rheum alexandrae, a giant herb endemic to the alpine zone of the Hengduan Mountains in south‐western China, enhance the reproductive fitness of its pollinator. Rheum alexandrae depends mainly on mutualistic seed‐consuming Bradysia flies for pollination. Bracts increased interior temperature on sunny days, acted as a buffer against fluctuating air humidity, greatly decreased the intensities of ultraviolet B/C radiation and provided shelter from strong winds. Bract removal significantly decreased adult oviposition and offspring performance of pollinators during flowering and fruiting, respectively. Our results indicate that the bracts of R. alexandrae enhance the reproductive fitness of its pollinating seed‐consuming mutualist in alpine environments, which may be attributed to the positive effects of the bracts on the interior microenvironment. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 349–359. 相似文献
