Rhynchosporium secalis is an important pathogen of barley globally. Fourteen polymorphic microsatellites were analyzed for 1664 R. secalis isolates sampled from 37 field populations to infer their demographic history. The results falsified the hypothesis that R. secalis co-evolved with its barley host in the Middle East. Populations from Scandinavia had significantly higher allelic diversities, the greatest number of private alleles and the highest genotypic diversities. All but three of the analyzed populations had an excess of gene diversity compared to the number of alleles, consistent with a recent population bottleneck. The remaining populations had a gene diversity deficit consistent with a population expansion following a recent population bottleneck in the last ±100 years. A coalescent analysis revealed that the effective population sizes based on θ, of the analyzed populations were small relative to their ancestral population sizes, indicating that only a fraction of the diversity present in the ancestral populations was transmitted into current populations. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the pathogen population on barley experienced a selection bottleneck imposed by the host and/or are founder populations. The mean estimate of migration rates was 2.2 (avg 90% confidence interval = 1.3–3.1). Major migration routes were identified among populations separated by long distances, eg between South Africa and Australia, as well as among North Africa, the Middle East and California, suggesting contemporary exchange of infected barley seed. In contrast with earlier findings, most populations exhibited significant gametic disequilibrium, probably as a result of genetic drift. We conclude that the majority of R. secalis populations have experienced human-mediated migration that led to numerous and relatively recent founder events around the world.  相似文献

Whereas previous studies have investigated correlates of extinction risk either at global or regional scales, our study explicitly models regional effects of anthropogenic threats and biological traits across the globe. Using phylogenetic comparative methods with a newly-updated supertree of 5020 extant mammals, we investigate the impact of species traits on extinction risk within each WWF ecoregion. Our analyses reveal strong geographical variation in the influence of traits on risk: notably, larger species are at higher risk only in tropical regions. We then relate these patterns to current and recent-historical human impacts across ecoregions using spatial modelling. The body–mass results apparently reflect historical declines of large species outside the tropics due to large-scale land conversion. Narrow-ranged and rare species tend to be at high risk in areas of high current human impacts. The interactions we describe between biological traits and anthropogenic threats increase understanding of the processes determining extinction risk.  相似文献

High-resolution macroscopic charcoal and pollen analyses were used to reconstruct the fire and vegetation history of the Willamette Valley for the last 1200 years. Presented in this paper are three new paleoecological reconstructions from Lake Oswego, Porter Lake, and Warner Lake, Oregon, and portions of previous reconstructions from Battle Ground Lake, Washington, and Beaver Lake, Oregon. The reconstructions show that prior to Euro-American settlement vegetation and fire regimes were influenced by a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. Battle Ground Lake shows a stronger influence from climate, while Lake Oswego, Beaver Lake, Porter Lake, and Warner Lake were more controlled by human activity. However, human-set fires were also modulated by regional climate variability during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age. Fire reconstructions from Battle Ground Lake, Lake Oswego, Beaver Lake, and Porter Lake imply that fires were infrequent in the Willamette Valley 200-300 years prior to Euro-American settlement. The decline of Native American populations due to introduced disease may have led to this reduction in fire activity. The prehistoric record from Warner Lake, however, indicates that fires in the foothills of the Cascade Range were more frequent than on the valley floor, at least until ca. AD 1800. The historic portions of the reconstructions indicate that Euro-American land clearance for agriculture and logging produced the most dramatic shifts in vegetation and fire regimes. All five records indicate that few fires in the Willamette Valley have occurred since ca. AD 1930, and fires today are predominantly grass fires.  相似文献

Anthropogenically induced global climate change has profound implications for marine ecosystems and the economic and social systems that depend upon them. The relationship between temperature and individual performance is reasonably well understood, and much climate-related research has focused on potential shifts in distribution and abundance driven directly by temperature. However, recent work has revealed that both abiotic changes and biological responses in the ocean will be substantially more complex. For example, changes in ocean chemistry may be more important than changes in temperature for the performance and survival of many organisms. Ocean circulation, which drives larval transport, will also change, with important consequences for population dynamics. Furthermore, climatic impacts on one or a few 'leverage species' may result in sweeping community-level changes. Finally, synergistic effects between climate and other anthropogenic variables, particularly fishing pressure, will likely exacerbate climate-induced changes. Efforts to manage and conserve living marine systems in the face of climate change will require improvements to the existing predictive framework. Key directions for future research include identifying key demographic transitions that influence population dynamics, predicting changes in the community-level impacts of ecologically dominant species, incorporating populations' ability to evolve (adapt), and understanding the scales over which climate will change and living systems will respond.  相似文献

Food supplementation studies demonstrate the importance of resources in the timing of reproduction. Studies of Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) found that supplemented jays bred earlier than unsupplemented jays and that protein may play a critical role. In this study, free-living scrub-jays were provided with supplemental diets high in fat and protein (HFHP) or high in fat and low in protein (HFLP). Jays in both treatments bred earlier than unsupplemented controls (CNT), but HFHP-supplemented jays bred earlier than HFLP jays. To assess possible mechanisms, we measured testosterone (T) in males, estradiol (E2) in females, and corticosterone (CORT) in both. HFHP males had higher T than HFLP and CNT males, but treatment did not affect E2 levels of females. Pilot studies of scrub-jays in suburban environments suggest that the spatial and temporal predictability of food may influence corticosterone (CORT) levels. Suburban jays have year-round access to human-provided foods and breed earlier than wildland jays; thus, we compared CORT in all treatments in the natural site (wildlands) with those of suburban jays. CORT levels of suburban jays were lower than HFLP, HFHP, and CNT jays. HFHP-supplemented jays had lower CORT levels than those of HFLP and CNT jays. The observed differences in the timing of breeding, both between suburban and wildland populations and between experimental groups in the wildlands, may result from differences in the spatial and temporal predictability of food, and the nutritional differences in diets. Because CORT can negatively affect the reproductive axis, we postulate that nutrient availability, the predictability of food, CORT levels, and initiation of reproduction are inextricably linked.  相似文献

Liana diversity was inventoried in four tropical dry evergreen forest sites that are characterized by numerous trees, of short stature and small diameter, and a varying degree of anthropogenic disturbance, on the Coromandel coast of south India. A 1-ha plot was established in each of the four sites and was subdivided into 100 quadrats of 10 m× 10 m. All lianas 1 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) rooted within the plot were enumerated. The species richness and density of lianas, with respect to site disturbance and forest stature, varied across the sites. Liana density totaled 3307 individuals (range 497–1163 individuals ha–1) and species richness totaled 39 species (range 24–29 species ha–1) representing 34 genera and 24 families. Combretaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Capparaceae and Vitaceae were the well-represented families. The top five species Strychnos minor, Combretum albidum, Derris ovalifolia, Jasminum angustifolium and Reissantia indica contributed 55% of total density. The slopes of the species–area curves were different for each of the four sites and the curve stabilized in only one site. Of the four climbing modes recognized among the total 39 species, 18 were twiners (56% of the total density). Eight species (24% of density) were tendril climbers and 12 species (16% of density) were scramblers. Hugonia mystax was the only hook climber. All the 39 species and 88% of liana density were encountered within a category of 6 cm dbh or less, and a similar pattern prevailed in the individual sites. Of the three diaspore dispersal modes found among the 39 liana species, animal (64%) and wind (23%) dispersal were predominant over the autochorous mode (13%). Liana diversity and distribution in dry forest communities appear to be influenced by forest stature and site disturbance levels. In the light of the extent of liana diversity and sacred grove status of the study sites, the need for forest conservation, involving local people, is emphasized.  相似文献

The reactions of Pd(II) and Pt(II) with 2-Acetyl Pyridine N(4)-Ethyl-Thiosemicarbazones, HAc4Et and 2-Acetyl Pyridine N(4)-1-(2-pyridyl)-piperazinyl Thiosemicarbazone, HAc4PiPiz and 2-Formyl Pyridine N(4)-1-(2-pyridyl)-piperazinyl Thiosemicarbazone, HFo4PiPiz afforded the complexes, [Pd(Ac4Et)], 1, [Pd(HAc4Et)2]Cl2, 2 and [Pd(Ac4Et)2], 3[Pt(Ac4Et)], 4, [Pt(HAc4Et)2]Cl2, 5, [Pt(Ac4Et)2], 6 and [Pd(Fo4PipePiz)Cl], 7, [Pd(Fo4PipePiz)2], 8, [Pd(Ac4PipePiz)Cl], 9 and [Pd(Ac4PipePiz)2], 10. The crystal structure of the complex [Pt(Ac4Et)2], 6 has been solved. The platinum(II) atom is in a square planar environment surrounded by two cis nitrogen atoms and two cis sulfur atoms. The ligands are not equivalent, one being tridentate with (N,N,S) donation, the other being monodentate using only the sulfur atom to coordinate to the metal. The tridentate ligand shows a Z, E, Z configuration while the monodentate ligand shows an E, E, Z. Inter-molecular hydrogen bonds stabilize the structure, while the crystal packing is determined by –, and Pt – C interactions. The antibacterial effect of Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes were studied in vitro. The complexes were found to have effect on Gram(+) bacteria, while the same complexes showed no bactericidal effect on Gram(–) bacteria. The effect of the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes on the in vitro DNA strand breakage was studied by agarose gel electrophoresis. The complexes 1-6 were found to exhibit a cytotoxic potency in a very low micromolar range and to be able to overcome the cisplatin resistance of A2780/Cp8 cells (Kovala-Demertzi et al. 2000).  相似文献

The step-wise accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in cancer development includes chromosome rearrangements and viral integration-mediated genetic alterations that frequently involve proto-oncogenes. Protooncogenes deregulation lead to unlimited, self-sufficient cell growth and ultimately generates invasive and destructive tumors. C-MYC gene, the cellular homologue of the avian myelocitic leukemia virus, is implicated in a large number of human solid tumors, leukemias and lymphomas as well as in a variety of animal neoplasias. Deregulated MYC expression is a common denominator in cancer. Chromosomal rearrangements and integration of oncogenic viruses frequently target MYC locus, causing structural or functional alterations of the gene. In this article, we illustrate how genomic rearrangements and viruses integration affect MYC locus in certain human lymphomas and solid tumors.  相似文献

Grazed and mown vegetation types in western Norway were investigated with the aim of describing their modern pollen/vegetation relationships as an aid to the interpretation of fossil pollen diagrams. Pollen surface samples and vegetation data were obtained from 186 square metre plots within 39 different sites of 10×10 m. Scatter plots that show the relationship between pollen percentages and vegetation percentages are presented forTrifolium pratense-type,Trifolium rcpens-type,Lotus, Campanula-type,Succisa, Ranunculus acris-type,Cirsium-type, Asteraceae Cichorioideae,Achillea-type,Potentilla-type, Apiaceae,Rumex sect.Acetosa, Galium-type, Cyperaceae,Calluna, Plantago lanceolata and Poaceae. Pollen representation factors relative to Poaceae (Rrel) are calculated for 54 pollen taxa. Differences in the values from different geographical areas were found in the case of some taxa, due to either different genera or species being included in the pollen taxa and/or to the different representation of high pollen producers in the different regional vegetation types. Background pollen influences the estimates for taxa such asR. sect.Acetosa, P. lanceolata, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, andCalluna, and an extended R-value (ERV) model was used to investigate the magnitude of this pollen component. Groups of roughly similar pollen representation were identified and factors to convert pollen percentages to vegetation abundances are suggested.  相似文献

The influence of dietary iron deficiency on acute nickel, lead or cadmium toxicity as reflected by the induction of hepatic, renal and intestinal metallothionein (MT), disposition of the metals, and alterations in hematological parameters was investigated in rats. The administration of cadmium induced the hepatic, renal and intestinal MT while that of nickel or lead induced hepatic MT only. However, dietary iron deficiency did not influence the cadmium induced tissue MT but enhanced the ability of nickel or lead to restore the normal synthesis of renal and intestinal MT lowered under the influence of reduced body iron status. The accumulation of lead in liver and kidney and that of cadmium enhanced in liver only, while tissue deposition of nickel remained unaffected by iron deficiency. The induction of hepatic MT by three metals appears related to the concomitant rise in the hepatic zinc, calcium and iron levels in normal rats. However, dietary iron deficiency increased the hepatic zinc in response to nickel or cadmium and that of heptic calcium in response to lead.  相似文献
