When confronted with predators, animals are forced to take crucial decisions such as the timing and manner of escape. In the case of the crab Chasmagnathus, cumulative evidence suggests that the escape response to a visual danger stimulus (VDS) can be accounted for by the response of a group of lobula giant (LG) neurons. To further investigate this hypothesis, we examined the relationship between behavioral and neuronal activities within a variety of experimental conditions that affected the level of escape. The intensity of the escape response to VDS was influenced by seasonal variations, changes in stimulus features, and whether the crab perceived stimuli monocularly or binocularly. These experimental conditions consistently affected the response of LG neurons in a way that closely matched the effects observed at the behavioral level. In other words, the intensity of the stimulus-elicited spike activity of LG neurons faithfully reflected the intensity of the escape response. These results support the idea that the LG neurons from the lobula of crabs are deeply involved in the decision for escaping from VDS.  相似文献

The organization of the antennal muscles, nerves, and motor neurons has been investigated in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana. Antennal movements have been observed by video analysis, muscle actions have been determined by dissection and direct mechanical testing, and the motor neurons innervating each muscle have been defined with a recently developed selective backfill method. A model of the antennomotor system of Periplaneta has thus been established and compared with that of crickets. Five muscles located within the head capsule insert on the most proximal antennal segment, the scape. By their action, they allow the scape to move in essentially any direction within the dorsoventral and anteroposterior planes. An additional pair of muscles, one dorsal and one ventral, are found within the scape. They insert on the pedicel and move the pedicel in the dorsal-ventral plane. These seven muscles are controlled by at least 17 motor neurons with somata located in the deutocerebrum. By their action, these motor neurons enable cockroaches to move the long flagellum of each antenna through a wide range of positions in the frontal space, medio-laterally, and also allow depression toward the substrate and elevation well above the level of the head. The antennal motor neurons have been classified into five morphological types based on soma and axon location. Each morphological type has been correlated with a particular pattern of muscle innervation and control. The neurites of all motor neurons are located along the medial aspect of the dorsal lobe of the deutocerebrum. This research was supported by grant nos. To compare vaccine performances in a pig pneumonia vaccine trial it is necessary to account for two mechanisms by which lesion‐free lung lobes may occur in pigs that have been experimentally challenged. A challenge may not establish in a pig and therefore necessarily there will be no lobe lesions. On the other hand a challenge may be established but the vaccine may prevent lobe lesions from developing. Therefore a model is required that unravels the nexus between the two mechanisms of generating pigs without any lung lesions. Some models are proposed based on zero‐modified distributions. Vaccine performance may then be assessed using a number of criteria. Data from an actual pig pneumonia vaccine trial are used as an illustration.  相似文献

The olfactory and accessory lobes constitute prominent histological structures within the larval and mature lobster deutocerebrum, and both are associated with a dense innervation from paired serotonergic nerve cells, the dorsal giant neurons (DGNs). During development, the cell bodies of the DGNs are the first central somata to express serotonin (5-HT), and the onset of their 5-HT immunoreactivity coincides with the beginning of accessory lobe formation. In contrast, the olfactory lobe anlagen emerge much earlier and grow in the apparent absence of serotonin. The role of serotonergic input for the development of these brain structures was investigated in lobster embryos after serotonin had been depleted pharmacologically with the neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine. A ∼90% reduction of serotonin was confirmed in eggs using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Morphometric analyses suggested that serotonin depletion dramatically slowed the growth of olfactory and accessory lobes, although glomeruli differentiated at the normal time in both areas. The toxin exhibited a high degree of specificity for serotonergic neurons and associated target regions, and serotonin depletion persisted for at least 2 months following treatment. The goal of future experiments is to determine which of the cell types that innervate the olfactory and accessory lobes are affected by toxin treatment, thereby resulting in the retarded growth of these areas. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A sample of 1,600 unrelated individuals in Lagos (Nigeria) were examined for attached or free ear lobes. Pedigree data were obtained for 11 families by questionnaire. The corrected proportion of attached among the progeny of free X free was 0.27 compared to an expected value of 0.25. The observed frequencies of the three types of marriages were not significantly different from the expected values derived from the frequencies of the traits in the population. Males and females in the population were equally affected by the traits. Thus, the population frequency of attached is 25.37%, a value within the range for Caucasoids but lower than for Mongoloids.  相似文献

本研究通过形态解剖和原位末端标记法(TUNEL),对中华蜜蜂Apis cerana cerana视叶胚后发育过程中的细胞凋亡进行了研究,结果表明:视叶内的细胞程序性死亡开始出现在1龄幼虫末期,随后凋亡细胞数量逐渐增加;在视叶的胚后发育过程中,细胞凋亡经历了3个高峰期,即2龄幼虫、5龄幼虫和蛹发育的第2天;在视叶3个部分的发育中,视髓层中细胞凋亡的数量远远多于视小叶和视神经节层,而视神经节层最少,说明了细胞凋亡的数量和位置与各部分结构发育的时间以及神经投射有关。广泛的细胞凋亡是蜜蜂视叶发育过程中的一个显著特征。  相似文献

Glycoproteins produced by non‐engineered insects or insect cell lines characteristically bear truncated, paucimannose N‐glycans in place of the complex N‐glycans produced by mammalian cells. A key reason for this difference is the presence of a highly specific N‐glycan processing β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase in insect, but not in mammalian systems. Thus, reducing or abolishing this enzyme could enhance the ability of glycoengineered insects or insect cell lines to produce complex N‐glycans. Of the three insect species routinely used for recombinant glycoprotein production, the processing β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase gene has been isolated only from Spodoptera frugiperda. Thus, the purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize the genes encoding this important processing enzyme from the other two species, Bombyx mori and Trichoplusia ni. Bioinformatic analyses of putative processing β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase genes isolated from these two species indicated that each encoded a product that was, indeed, more similar to processing β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidases than degradative or chitinolytic β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidases. In addition, over‐expression of each of these genes induced an enzyme activity with the substrate specificity characteristic of processing, but not degradative or chitinolytic enzymes. Together, these results demonstrated that the processing β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase genes had been successfully isolated from Trichoplusia ni and Bombyx mori. The identification of these genes has the potential to facilitate further glycoengineering of baculovirus‐insect cell expression systems for the production of glycosylated proteins. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Lim Kinase (Limk) belongs to a phylogenetically conserved family of serine/threonine kinases, which have been shown to be potent regulators of the actin cytoskeleton. Despite accumulating evidence of its biochemical actions, its in vivo function has remained poorly understood. The association of the Limk1 gene with Williams Syndrome indicates that proteins of this family play a role in the nervous system. To unravel the cellular and molecular functions of Limk, we have either knocked out or activated the Limk gene in Drosophila. At the neuromuscular junction, loss of Limk leads to enlarged terminals, while increasing the activity of Limk leads to stunted terminals with fewer synaptic boutons. In the antennal lobe, loss of Limk abolishes the ability of p21-activated kinase (Pak) to alter glomerular development. In contrast, increase in Limk function leads to ectopic glomeruli, a phenotype suppressible by the coexpression of a hyperactive Cofilin gene. These results establish Limk as a critical regulator of Cofilin function and synapse development, and a downstream effector of Pak in vivo.  相似文献

The neurophysiology and antennal lobe projections of olfactory receptor neurons housed within short trichoid sensilla of female Heliothis virescens F. (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) were investigated using a combination of cut-sensillum recording and cobalt-lysine staining techniques. Behaviorally relevant odorants, including intra- and inter-sexual pheromonal compounds, plant and floral volatiles were selected for testing sensillar responses. A total of 184 sensilla were categorized into 25 possible sensillar types based on odor responses and sensitivity. Sensilla exhibited both narrow (responding to few odors) and broad (responding to many odors) response spectra. Sixty-six percent of the sensilla identified were stimulated by conspecific odors; in particular, major components of the male H. virescens hairpencil pheromone (hexadecanyl acetate and octadecanyl acetate) and a minor component of the female sex pheromone, (Z)-9-tetradecenal. Following characterization of the responses, olfactory receptor neurons within individual sensilla were stained with cobalt lysine (N=39) and traced to individual glomeruli in the antennal lobe. Olfactory receptor neurons with specific responses to (Z)-9-tetradecenal, a female H. virescens sex pheromone component, projected to the female-specific central large female glomerulus (cLFG) and other glomeruli. Terminal arborizations from sensillar types containing olfactory receptor neurons sensitive to male hairpencil components and plant volatiles were also localized to distinct glomerular locations. This information provides insight into the representation of behaviorally relevant odorants in the female moth olfactory system.
