Abstract. Microscale variation of vegetation was studied in a Mediterranean oak savanna dominated by annual plants at Neve Ya'ar Experimental Station, in the lower Galilee of Israel. Species presence/absence data were recorded in 20 cm x 20 cm quadrats on a 500-quadrat transect. These data were ordinated with Detrended Correspondence Analysis. Soil nitrate, phosphorous, potassium, pH, soil moisture and salinity were determined at 2-m intervals on the 100-m transect, at monthly intervals from November 1981 to April 1982. Litter cover and canopy shade were surveyed in October 1981 and April 1982. A sharp rise in available nitrate occurred in November, following the first winter rains. Patterns in herbaceous vegetation, as expressed by sample ordination scores, correlated best with litter cover in October. This suggested that vegetation pattern in this community may be strongly influenced by environmental conditions at the time of seedling germination and establishment. 相似文献

Seasonal and regional variations in the speciation, sediment-water partitioning, and dynamics of mercury (Hg) were studied
at selected sites along the Hg-polluted Wabigoon River, and at unpolluted headwater and tributary sites, during April–September,
1979. ‘Dissolved’ and ‘particulate’ forms of Hg in the water were separated by continuous-flow centrifugation in the field.
The Hg and other pollutants such as wood chips and salt had been discharged from a chlor-alkali plant and paper mill at Dryden,
Ontario.
Concentrations and loadings of particulate methyl mercury (CH3Hg+) and total particulate Hg (and loadings of total ‘dissolved’ Hg) were greatest during the spring flood (April-May) owing
to accelerated resuspension and transport of sediments. Concentrations of ‘dissolved’ CH3Hg+, however, were highest in the summer (July–September), probably reflecting stimulation of microbial methylating activity
by elevated temperatures, together with factors such as reduced levels of metal-scavenging particulates and minimal dilution
by runoff. Total dissolved Hg concentrations were relatively high in September at polluted sites only, possibly because of
desorption from sediments due to elevated concentrations of Cl− ions. Loadings of dissolved CH3Hg+ tended to be high in the summer but were generally depressed (suggesting sorption by suspended particles) during the major
spring-flood episode in May.
During July–August dissolved CH3Hg+ was a function of total dissolved Hg, suggesting rapid biomethylation of desorbed inorganic Hg; but in general dissolved
and suspended CH3Hg+ levels depended on environmental variables and were unrelated to total Hg concentrations. In the summer only, total dissolved
Hg was a function of dissolved Cl−. Hg species in particulates were associated with sulfides, hydrated Fe and Mn oxides, organic matter (notably high molecular
weight humic and humic-Fe components), and selenium (Se); but CH3Hg+ and total Hg differed in their specific preferences for binding agents, implying that binding sites discriminate between
CH3Hg+ and Hg2+ ions. CH3Hg+ was associated with sulfide and (in the spring only) with Fe oxides, whereas total Hg was associated with organic matter
and Se and with DTPA- and NaOH-extractable Fe in the spring but with Mn oxide and NaOH-extractable organics in the summer.
Sulfides were most abundant in May, indicating that they were eroded from bottom sediments, but Fe and Mn oxides were most
abundant in the summer, probably owing to activities of filamentous iron bacteria and other micro-organisms.
Particulate Hg was 98–100% nonextractable by mild solvents such as Ca acetate, CaCl2, dilute acetic acid, and (at polluted sites only) DTPA solutions, suggesting that the particulate Hg mobilized in the spring
may not be readily available to organisms; association with Se and high molecular weight humic matter also supports this hypothesis.
Hg probably becomes more bio-available in the summer, as suggested by the upsurge in dissolved CH3Hg+ and total dissolved Hg levels, and by increases in the solubility of particulate Hg in acetic acid, DTPA, H2O2, and NaOH solutions, as well as an increase in the relative importance of lower molecular weight fractions of NaOH-extractable
Hg (in September).
Regional variations in Hg speciation and partitioning reflected a gradient in sediment composition from wood chips near Dryden
to silt-clay mud further downstream. Hg in silt-clay mud relatively far (> 35 km) downstream from the source of pollution
or in unpolluted areas appeared to be more readily solubilized by Cl− ions or chelators such as DTPA, more readily methylated (as indicated by downstream increases in dissolved CH3Hg+ levels and CH3Hg+/total Hg ratios), and was to a greater degree organically bound (H2O2-extractable), and thus was probably more bio-available, than Hg in wood-chip deposits. Possible explanations include weaker
binding of Hg by the mud, the more finely divided state of the mud, and improved microbial growth at lower concentrations
of toxic pollutants. Owing to enrichment in sulfides and Fe oxides, resuspended wood-chip sediments were especially efficient
scavengers of CH3Hg+.
The results indicate that in any pollution abatement plan aimed at lowering the Hg levels in the biota of lakes fed by the
Wabigoon River, immobilization, removal, or detoxification of dissolved as well as particulate forms of Hg in the river would
probably have to be considered. Possibly, Hg species could be ‘scrubbed’ from the river water by increasing the suspended
load and by sedimentation and treatment with Hg-binding agents in special receiving basins. 相似文献

We have shown that tellurite and tellurate require the interaction with reduced glutathione (GSH) to hemolyze human erythrocytes.
The study of the nature of this interaction is the main object of this paper. The degree of hemolysis was determined by the
method of Angelone. The addition of extracellular 1 mM GSH or cysteine increased the rate of hemolysis. Concanavalin A (0.3
mg/mL) and/or 4 mg/mL adenosine did not affect the hemolysis by 0.1 mM tellurite. One tenth to 1 mM 4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyanostilbene-2,2′-disulfonate
(SITS) inhibited this hemolysis by 60–100%. Millimolar GSH released this inhibition. Incubation of 0.1 mM tellurite with 1
mM GSH for 90 min at 37°C, produced a hemolytic agent when prepared and tested under nitrogen, but one that was not active
when prepared in air. The hemolysis byp-hydroxymercuribenzoate orp-hydroxymercuriphenylsulfonate did not involve GSH. Scanning electron micrographs showed a sphero-echinocyte transformation,
in the pre-hemolytic stage, with all the agents tested. The rate of penetration of tellurite plays a role in determining the
rate of hemolysis, as shown by the effect of SITS. The release by GSH of the inhibition by SITS poses questions concerning
the site of action and cell membrane penetration of the hemolytic agent. Telluride or some intermediate in the interaction
of GSH with tellurite is the actual hemolytic agent. 相似文献

The structure determination of yeast hexokinase has been extended to 3.5 Å resolution for the dimer and to 2.7 Å resolution for the monomer using multiple isomorphous replacement. The electron density maps of both the monomer and dimer crystal forms have been substantially improved by an averaging procedure. From these maps the course of the polypeptide backbone and some aspects of the dimer interaction have been established.The hexokinase subunit arrangement is contrary to a major tenet of the Monod et al. (1965) theory of allosteric proteins which postulated that only symmetric or isologous interactions of subunits would occur in oligomeric proteins. One subunit of the dimer is related to the other by a 156 ° rotation about and a 13.8 Å translation along a molecular screw axis. In the hexokinase dimer the set of residues in one subunit that is interacting with the other subunit is different from the set of residues in the second subunit that is interacting with the first subunit. This heterologous or non-symmetric interaction of subunits is associated with some small differences in the structure of the two subunits, particularly at the subunit interface, and accounts for some of this enzyme's non-symmetric interactions with substrates and activators. Indeed, the non-symmetric subunit association may play an important role in the control of this enzyme's activity.The overall structure of hexokinase is considerably different than the known structures of the other enzymes in the glycolytic pathway. Although there is a striking similarity between the domain of hexokinase that binds AMP and the domain of lactate dehydrogenase that binds NAD, the former structure contains both antiparallel and parallel β-pleated strands, while the latter contains only parallel β-structure. In an attempt to assess the significance of this structural similarity, the structure of the nucleotide binding domains of hexokinase and lactate dehydrogenase are compared to a portion of carboxypeptidase A. The observed similarities among these structures suggests that a central β-pleated sheet flanked by α-helices is a common supersecondary structure that probably arose by convergent as well as divergent evolution. Thus, there appears to be no compelling evidence at this time to support the hypothesis that a part of hexokinase has evolved from the same gene as the dinucleotide binding domain of lactate dehydrogenase. 相似文献

A key challenge in ecology is to understand the relationships between organismal traits and ecosystem processes. Here, with a novel dataset of leaf length and width for 10 480 woody dicots in China and 2374 in North America, we show that the variation in community mean leaf size is highly correlated with the variation in climate and ecosystem primary productivity, independent of plant life form. These relationships likely reflect how natural selection modifies leaf size across varying climates in conjunction with how climate influences canopy total leaf area. We find that the leaf size?primary productivity functions based on the Chinese dataset can predict productivity in North America and vice‐versa. In addition to advancing understanding of the relationship between a climate‐driven trait and ecosystem functioning, our findings suggest that leaf size can also be a promising tool in palaeoecology for scaling from fossil leaves to palaeo‐primary productivity of woody ecosystems. 相似文献

AbstractMercury is affected by the movement mechanisms in the environmental media and is normally present in dry and wet depositions and surface and water vapor, among other things. The rapid growth of mercury-related industries in the past two decades reflects the result of its increased use in water sources such as in the Shimen reservoir, northern Taiwan. Consequently, residents living nearby are exposed to mercury almost every day. In light of the effects of continued exposure to the deleterious properties of mercury, this study provides modeling results of the atmosphere, soil, and freshwater over a 30-year period (2016–2046). The associated influences in the media and mercury contamination during this period will be determined via sensitivity analysis. Finally, the results of this study facilitate the assessment of potential health hazards associated with mercury inhalation and the ingestion of MeHg-contaminated fish. The mean daily dose (mg/kg) and hazard quotient (HQ) in the children and adult were 3.52E-13 (HQ = 4.10E-09) and 1.19E-13 (HQ = 1.39E-09) for Hg inhalation and 6.38E-05 (HQ = 6.38E-01) and 4.47E-05 (HQ = 4.47E-01) for ingestion of MeHg+-contaminated fish. 相似文献

Thimerosal is ethyl mercury based compound which is being used as a preservative in vaccines since decades. Pharmaceutical products and vaccines that contain thimerosal are among the potential source of mercury exposure. Current research was intended to ascertain the reprotoxic effects of thimerosal on rat testes. Twenty-four adult male albino rats were sorted into four groups (n = 6). The first group was a control group. Rats of experimental Group 2, 3 and 4 were treated with various dosages of thimerosal (0.5, 10, 50 mg/kg) respectively. Rats were decapitated after thirty days of trial and different parameters were analyzed. Thimerosal exposure resulted in a significant decrease in antioxidant enzyme activities including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GSR) and increased levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Different doses of thimerosal significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the concentration of plasma testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Additionally, Daily sperm production (DSP) and efficiency of daily sperm production were significantly reduced followed by thimerosal exposure. Moreover, thimerosal significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, number of spermatogonia along with spermatids. Thimerosal induced adverse histopathological and morphological changes in testicular tissues such as decreased Leydig cells, diameter of seminiferous tubules, tunica albuginea height and epithelial height. On the other hand, the increase in tubular lumen and interstitial spaces was observed due to thimerosal. These outcomes indicated that thimerosal has potential reprotoxic effects in male albino rats. 相似文献

BackgroundWe investigated Se levels along the Tapajós River basin - which is an important tributary of the Amazon River - and the possible antagonistic effect of Se in Hg availability. This is the first study to investigate Se transfer from abiotic to biotic compartments and along the food chain in aquatic ecosystems of the Amazon basin.MethodsSe concentrations were measured in superficial sediment (n = 29), plankton (n = 28) and fishes (n = 121) along two stretches of the Tapajós River basin (Tapup/mi and Taplow), comprising approximately 500 km with different hydrological characteristics.ResultsSe concentrations in sediment were significantly higher in the Taplow (345−664 μg kg−1) than in the Tapup/mi (60−424 μg kg−1). The seasonal flooding of the Amazon River probably helps to carry selenium-rich sediment to the Tapajós mouth (Taplow stretch). We suggest that Se in sediment could decrease the bioavailability of Hg resulting in lower MeHg concentrations in fish, as observed in the Taplow (45−934 μg kg−1). Sediment and plankton were positively correlated in relation to their Se concentrations (r = 0.62; p = 0.001) suggesting that sediment can possibly be the main source of Se to plankton. Our data indicate Se uptake by primary consumers, as noted in phytoplankton levels. The decrease of Se concentrations along the food chain was also noteworthy.ConclusionThis work elucidates some aspects of Se biogeochemistry in the Amazon basin and shows its importance regarding Hg cycles in aquatic ecosystems. 相似文献
