Fleshy-fruited plants rely on animal frugivores to disperse their seeds, and seed removal by frugivores may leave an imprint on seedling recruitment. However, to what extent plant–frugivore interactions are related to seedling recruitment has rarely been quantified at the community level, especially in species-rich tropical forests. In this study, we tested the effect of different plant traits on fruit removal by frugivores and tested the relative importance of fruit removal, plant traits and abiotic factors for seedling recruitment. We quantified plant–frugivore interactions of 22 fleshy-fruited plant species consumed by 56 diurnal frugivore species, and counted the number of seedlings that emerged along an elevational gradient in the Colombian Andes. We measured a set of plant traits (i.e., crop size; fruit size; seed load and mass; fruit nutritional contents), estimated the density of adult plants and recorded relevant abiotic factors (light, temperature and humidity). We found that fruit removal by frugivores was positively associated with crop size, but negatively associated with fruit length and unrelated to seed load and fruit nutritional content. Seedling densities were positively related to the density of adult plants, seed mass and fruit removal by animals. We found no relationship between abiotic factors and seedling recruitment. Our results indicate that fruit abundance and morphology are important determinants of fruit removal and that fruit removal is positively associated with seedling recruitment accounting for effects of species abundance and plant traits. We conclude that plant traits shape fruit removal and seedling recruitment at the community level, while these two crucial processes of forest regeneration are directly linked by seed dispersal of animals.  相似文献

This study examines patterns of growth in height and weight among children (<60 months) of highland and coastal agricultural communities of Ecuador. Highland children are significantly shorter, but not significantly lighter than their coastal peers. Linear growth rates (cm/6 months) are comparable between the two samples. Growth rates for body weight (kg/6 m) are similar in highland and coastal boys, whereas highland girls display larger weight gains than their coastal counterparts. In both regions, linear growth is compromised to a much greater extent than growth in body weight, and growth faltering for both height and weight is most pronounced between birth and 24 months of age. The similarity in growth rates between the highland and coastal samples suggests that high altitude hypoxia plays a relatively small role in shaping growth during the first five years after birth. Rather, it appears that most of the disparity in height between the two samples can be attributed to differences established by 6 months of age. The pattern of growth retardation seen in both regions during the first 24 postnatal months is similar to that observed among impoverished populations throughout the world and is likely associated with the influence of nutritional and disease stressors. After 2 years of age, little or no “catch up” growth is seen in height, whereas improvements in weight gain are more pronounced, especially among highland girls. Phylogenetic relationships within the genus Muscisaxicola, a primarily Andean group of tyrant-flycatchers, were studied using complete sequences of the mitochondrial genes COII and ND3. Relationships among Muscisaxicola species were found to differ substantially from those of previous views, suggesting convergence in traditional avian taxonomic characters within the genus. The 11 species of large, gray, “typical” Muscisaxicola flycatchers (including M. grisea, newly restored to species status) formed a distinct clade, consisting of two major groups: a clade of 6 species breeding primarily in the central Andes and a clade of 5 species breeding primarily in the southern Andes. The other 2 species traditionally placed in this genus, M. fluviatilis, an Amazonian species, and M. maculirostris, were both rather divergent genetically from the typical species, although M. maculirostris may be the sister taxon to the typical clade. The patterns of sympatry exhibited by Muscisaxicola species in the high Andes appear to be the consequence of speciation and secondary contact within regions of the Andes, rather than a result of dispersal between regions. Diversification of the typical Muscisaxicola species appears to have occurred during the middle and late Pleistocene, suggesting generally that taxa of the high Andes and Patagonia may have been greatly influenced by mid-to-late Pleistocene events. There were likely several independent developments of migration within this genus, but migration is probably ancestral in the southern clade, with subsequent loss of migration in two taxa.  相似文献
