This article compares limnological attributes of two of the world’s largest shallow lakes—Lake Okeechobee in Florida, USA and Lake Taihu in P.R. China. Both the systems support an array of ecological and societal values including fish and wildlife habitat, public water supply, flood protection, and recreation. Both have extensive research programs, largely because of concern regarding the lakes’ frequent cyanobacterial blooms. By evaluating these systems together, we compare and contrast properties that can generally advance the understanding and management of large shallow lowland lakes. Because of shallow depth, long fetch, and unconsolidated mud sediments, water chemistry, and transparency in both the lakes are strongly influenced by resuspended sediments that affect light and nutrient conditions. In the central region of both the lakes, where depth is the greatest, evaluation of limiting factors by a trophic state index approach indicates that light most often limits phytoplankton biomass. In contrast, the more sheltered shoreline areas of both the lakes display evidence of nitrogen (N) limitation, which also has been confirmed in nutrient assays conducted in earlier studies. This N limitation most likely is a result of excessive levels of phosphorus (P) that have developed in the lakes due to high external loads over recent decades and the currently high internal P recycling. Comparisons of these lakes show that Lake Taihu has higher N than, similar total phosphorus (TP) and similar light conditions to that of Lake Okeechobee, but less chlorophyll a (CHL). The latter may be as a result of lower winter temperatures in Lake Taihu (around 5°C) compared to Lake Okeechobee (around 15°C), which could reduce phytoplankton growth and abundance through the other seasons of the year. In these systems, the important role of light, temperature, and nutrients in algal bloom dynamics must be considered, especially due to possible adverse and unintended effects that might occur with projects such as sediment removal, and in the long term, in regard to buffering lake responses to external load reduction. The algal spore lytic fatty acid of heptadeca-5,8,11-trien (HpDTE: C17:3) was isolated from the crustose coralline seaweed Lithophyllum yessoense. HpDTE, an odd-numbered carbon fatty acid, showed more than 50% lysis at a concentration of 5 μg.mL−1 against the spores of three chlorophyte species, nine rhodophytes, four phaeophytes, and the cells of four phytoplankton species. Lysis activity increased with the number of double bonds and carbon atoms in the fatty acid increased. HpDTE showed a ten-fold stronger activity with a LC50 of 3.1 μg.mL−1 than α-linolenic acid (C18:3).  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, in particular their spores and other resistant propagules, play an important role in secondary succession processes that facilitate regeneration after disturbance events. In this study, the effects of high and low wildfire frequencies (respectively short and long fire return intervals) on the resistant propagules communities (RPCs) of a Mediterranean open pine forest were compared. Soil samples were collected in four mountain sites with different fire return intervals and used to test ectomycorrhiza development in two hosts, Pinus pinaster and Quercus suber. RPCs were characterized by direct sequencing of fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions from individual ECM root tips. Eighteen ECM species were detected in the bioassay. The most frequently found fungi were Cenococcum geophilum, Inocybe jacobi, Thelephora terrestris, Tomentella ellisii on both hosts and Rhizopogon luteolus and R. roseolus on maritime pine. A short fire return interval reduced the species richness of the ECM community found on Q. suber, promoted species like R. roseolus and reduced the abundance of other species (e.g. R. luteolus). The abundance of I. jacobi was positively affected by long fire return interval, but decreased significantly with recurrent fires. These results indicate that changes in fire frequency can alter the structure, composition and diversity of ECM communities, which could compromise the resilience of the ecosystem in highly disturbed areas.  相似文献

Marine algal toxins are an important cause of seafood-associated outbreaks. Some marine bacteria living in association with algae are able to produce channel-blocking substances similar to PSP and TTX toxins and a role of these bacteria in the toxicity of dinoflagellates has been hypothesized. The aim of this study was to monitor, over a period of 2 years, areas used in shellfish production in the northern Adriatic Sea, through the determination of phytoplankton and the characterization of bacteria isolated from algae. Toxicity tests on bacterial extracts were performed using in vivo (mouse) and in vitro (cell culture) tests and by HPLC. The Dinophysis genus was detected throughout the year, while the Alexandrium genus was present in winter and spring. Sixteen bacteria isolated from algae, out of 61 bacterial strains tested by in vitro assay, were found to be producers of toxic substances that could block sodium channels in cells. HPLC analysis for the detection of PSP and TTX toxins always gave negative results, but their presence in concentrations undetectable by HPLC, and/or the production of chemically different substances with similar biological action, could not be excluded.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative studies of atmospheric fungal spores at a chloralkali factory, Jayashree Chemicals. were made during 1993 employing culture plate and rotorod methods. A total of 57 sporulating fungal types, including three sterile mycelial forms, were recorded by the culture plate method and 51 spore types, including the hyphal fragments and unidentified spores, were recorded by the rotorod method. As to the seasonal variation, winter was found to be the greatest contributor of fungal spores as compared to the summer and rainy season. Instead, when considering the hour of the day, the peak number of fungal propagules was recorded at noon (12.00 h) followed by evening and morning values, an exception being recorded in winter months, when maximum CFUs ofCladosporium were monitored in the morning. The seasonal variation in fungal concentration and composition was found to be influenced by temperature, rainfall and relative humidity, whereas diurnal incidence was the effect of varying temperature and relative humidity during day time only. Moderate temperature and relative humidity favoured the maximum fungal spore load in the atmosphere.Cladosporium, Nigrospora, Alternaria, Lasiodiplodia, Drechslera, Pestalotia, Curvularia, Epicoccum, Aspergillus, Penicillium andChaetomium were the commonest fungal spores in the factory area.  相似文献

Controlling the input of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from dairies and other livestock operations into the surrounding air- and water-sheds poses both technical and economic challenges to the agricultural community. The purpose of this paper is to assess the economics of algal turf scrubber treatment technology at the farm-scale for a hypothetical 1000-cow dairy. Costs were developed for farms with and without anaerobic pretreatment. The majority of capital costs were due to land preparation, installation of liner material, and engineering fees. The majority of operational costs were due to energy requirements for biomass drying, pumping water, and repayment of capital investment. On farms using anaerobic pretreatment, waste heat from burning of biogas could be used to offset the energy requirements of biomass drying. In addition, biogas combustion exhaust gas could then be recycled back to the algal system to supply dissolved inorganic carbon for optimal algal production and pH control. Under the best case (algal system coupled with anaerobic digestion pretreatment), the yearly operational costs per cow, per kg N, per kg P, and per kg of dried biomass were $454, $6.20, $31.10, and $0.70, respectively. Without anaerobic digestion pretreatment, the yearly operational costs were 36% higher, amounting to $631 per cow, $8.70 per kg N, $43.20 per kg P, and $0.97 per kg of dried biomass. For perspective, a recent survey of 36 Maryland dairy farms found long-term annual profits of about $500 per cow. As no market currently exists for manure grown algal biomass, our cost analysis does not include any value of the biomass generated during manure treatment. In addition, there are a variety of potential uses for the algal biomass from manure treatment that could defray treatment costs. Future opportunities for dairies to participate in nutrient trading approaches to watershed nutrient management may also become important.  相似文献

Eighteen long-term competition experiments were performed on two freshwater algae, a blue-green alga, Anabaena flos-aquae, and a diatom, Cyclotella sp., under controlled light and temperature conditions and various nutrient limitations. As predicted, Anabaena displaced Cyclotella when nitrate was in short supply to both species, whereas Cyclotella became dominant when both species were phosphate-limited. The two species stably coexisted when phosphate and silicate were limited. Anabaena either displaced or coexisted with Cyclotella when nitrate and phosphate or nitrate, phosphate and silicate were limited, depending on their initial density ratios. This study revealed strong effects of initial population densities on the outcomes of algal competition for limiting nutrients.  相似文献

Lysogens were isolated after confluent lysis of the blue-green algaNostoc muscorum by N-1 virus and characterised. The spontaneous liberation of active virus particles in lysogens was not lost after treating them with viricidal concentration of EDTA and virus titre obtained in their cultures was >5×103 PFU/ml. The virus adsorbed on the lysogens with a slower rate than on parent alga, although it followed the pattern of a first order reaction.
